Bug#427514: linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64: System does not boot with 2.6.21-4
Subject: linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64: System does not boot with 2.6.21-4 Package: linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64 Version: 2.6.21-5~snapshot.8808 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system *** Please type your report below this line *** Hi there, since I have installed 2.6.21-4 from unstable I cannot boot my system anymore. First my configuration: an Asus A8N-E (nforce4) motherboard with two SATA disks. The disks are configured in a software RAID1 using mdadm: /dev/md0 is my / /dev/md1 is my swap /dev/md2 is my /home If I start the system with 2.6.20 it boots fine. Here's a picture of the end of the initramfs and the start of the normal boot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/530049031/ The system reaches /sbin/init and it boots just fine. Here is what happens with 2.6.21: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/530049047/ Something goes wrong in the initramfs, and despite /dev/md0 is started, it can't be mounted. At this point I have tried to toy around in the initramfs, read the /scripts directory but couldn't understand how to make the system move along. (btw, I could really use a pager in there... I hate vi :D) It should be noted that I can start my other two RAID arrays without problems! Please ignore the fact that my 2.6.21 is now a snapshot from the Debian Kernel Team (btw, I have tried also 2.6.22rc3 but the problem is still there) as the problem arised with the upgrade from 2.6.21-3 and -4 from unstable. I don't recall any udev or initramfs-tools upgrade that could have broken the system, especially since 2.6.20 works just fine. Additionally the changelog between -3 and -4 is extremely short so no luck there. Bug#427514: linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64: System does not boot with 2.6.21-4

Are there enough people who are planning to subscribe to the bug list anyway or is it just going to further reduce the number of people that see and deal with kernel BRs? Well, I would invert this; I would expect any members of the kernel team to subscribe to the bts for the kernel packages, and currently the easiest way to do that is by subscribing to debian-kernel, so moving the bug traffic to -maint seems like it's just an obstacle for the maintainers to get bug traffic they should (and want to) receive. If nothing else, I think moving the bug traffic to a separate list is going to give us a split-brain effect, since it's not uncommon for bugs to warrant group discussion, and the group it should be discussed with is this one, AFAIK. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Note that you'll probably lose me as someone who occasionally helps reply to bugs as I doubt I'll want to be subscribed to two separate kernel lists. I suspect this will be true for others as well. why? I mean, what's the overhead of subscribing to two separate lists? Just curious.. It will also mean that I will lose some sense of what is happening wrt the kernel. Are there enough people who are planning to subscribe to the bug list anyway or is it just going to further reduce the number of people that see and deal with kernel BRs? I for one would certainly subscribe to both. However, I've heard complaints from people that they are interested in higher level/lower traffic discussions (new upstream to be uploaded to experimental, kernel update in a stable release, should we drop kernel-package, etc), but they are not interested in individual bugs. The current model is suboptimal for them. Perhaps we can force these people to watch bug traffic go by so that they can't help but participate in triage at some level, but I suspect its more likely that these people will just unsubscribe altogether (or implement their own filter). imo, people should be able to select their level of involvement. However, since I personally want to see all of this mail, I'm not really going to push the issue. If there's no outcry from people who want to see only bugs or only non-bugs, then we're probably trying to solve a non-existant problem. In fact, of the people I remember complaning about this, I don't think either are active on the current list (and I don't know whether they would subscribe to either filtered one). I do however think that getting more people involved with triage is critical. I think the best way to do that would be for the kernel team to create some sort of work flow that establishes the rules for dealing with bugs, things like: * When and how to forward bugs upstream * How long to leave a bug open w/o a response from the submitter * Procedures for narrowing down a fix/breakage - e.g., determining if its debian-specific, using git-bisect, etc * Useful usertag procedures for reducing the problem into smaller sets - e.g., hardware, subsystem, etc. In short, get it down to where 80% of the work can be handled by monkeys, then start baiting traps with bananas and building automated poop-slingers where feasible. -- dann frazier -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
