Re: Sending email(smail)

When mail is sent when you're offline, the mail daemon queues it, because it can't connect to the remote host. It retries every so often for a few days, then gives up. The easiest thing to do is to just let the daemon queue it, and then, when you're online, run the `runq' command to have it attempt delivery immediately. Of course there are other solutions but this is the simplest. If you use diald it won't work of course. Maybe the diald filters can be configured to not bring the connection up for packets sent to the smtp port? Sorry, but it doesn't. I use Pine, with the smtp host as localhost. Pine comes back as saying it can't be delivered. I believe this is because smail is trying to resolve with dns, can't, and gives up. Any other suggestions? Hi. I failed to configure my AWE64 sound card. By following all the instructions in the min-HOWTO I come up with very predictable result - system hangs solid on my attempt to insert sound module. I installed the latest OSS-Free driver, patched with AWE extentions, compiled the kernel (2.0.33), run pnpdump (ver 1.9), it failed to detect all three chanels of the wavetable- I inserted them manually, all data was availble from the card manual. dselect seg fault after dpkg upgrades
I have been working lately on upgrading to hamm. In an effort to fix a problem with dpkg-ftp, I upgraded to the following packages: dpkg_1.3.0.20.deb dpkg-ftp_1.4.9.deb But now when I try to run dselect I get a segmentation fault. This is perhaps not too surprising, considering that I havn't (to my knowledge) upgraded dselect since before making the jump to libc6, whereas the new dpkg (which mayby is called by exec* or something?) probably uses libc6. The next obvious thing to try was upgrading via dpkg to the latest version of dselect, but I couldn't find it. Does it go by an odd name or live somewhere other than the obvious /debian/hamm/hamm/binary-i386/base? Mayby you need diety with hamm? Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thus, you don't need a .forward file at all. You just have to make sure that procmail is installed and deliver is not when you install sendmail. Then sendmail will configure itself to use procmail for all local mail delivery. You can do the same with smail, using some changes to /etc/smail/transports. This is what I used to have (I think it was created by smailconfig): local: driver=appendfile, from, local, inet, return_path, unix_from_hack; append_as_user, check_user, file=/var/spool/mail/${lc:strip:user}, group=mail, mode=0660, notify_comsat, suffix=\n Change the above to this: local: driver=pipe, from, local, return_path, unix_from_hack; user=root, cmd=/usr/bin/procmail -f- -d $($user$) Now all locally delivered mail will be handled by procmail. Mail for users that don't have a .procmailrc will go into /var/spool/mail/username, just like it should. You don't need a .forward with this setup. Remco Thank you. Su and $XAUTHORITY environment variable == % echo $DISPLAY :0 % su - root type root password # export DISPLAY=:0 # export XAUTHORITY=~hessu/.Xauthority # xterm 2. Using ssh not su === % ssh -l root localhost type root password # xterm As you can see, ssh takes care of DISPLAY variable and setting the magic cookie for xauth based authorization. You can get ssh from the non-US debian mirrors. See README.non-US in any of the debian mirrors for more info about the non-US mirror site locations. I have also had problems with xman not seeing all the man pages. Here is a small wrapper script I made to get rid of the problem: #!/bin/sh MANPATH=`manpath` export MANPATH exec xman $* // Heikki -- Heikki Vatiainen * [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tampere University of Technology * Tampere, Finland -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Boot to disk one, and insert disk two when prompted. Eventually you'll reach a menu asking if you want to install NT or fix a previously installed NT setup. Take the fix or repair option. I don't remember the exact set of menu options, but when I did it all of the directions seemed to be pretty clear. The whole process takes about 10 minutes tops. Another alternative for fixing the NT boot sector is to get BootPart at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/bootpart.htm. This is a handy utility to have anyway. When I try to start it, it returns XEmacs: `getwd' failed: errno 0 The point is that it can only be started from root directory. I've read in getwd(3), that this can happen if the buffer is too small. What can I do? i no longer have this problem. a kind soul on #debian helped diagnose the problem. in my case, xemacs was trying to use libc5 libraries -- the fix was to change the order of directories in /etc/ld.so.conf -- /usr/X11R6/lib came after two libc5-compat directories, so i put it before them. A good mailreader like gnus can split it automaticaly in idividual messages (in a seperate folder) or you can use procmail to split it AFAIK. This can be set to queue all mail destined for non-local hosts, no matter how it entered the system. Smail would queue mail generated with the mail command, but if done through smtp, it would try to resolve dns before queueing. When offline, dns would fail, and pine would error out. Online, however, dns would work and smail would put the mail into the outgoing queue. This is broken, in my mind. For smail to queue outgoing smtp mail received through smtp, you must be online. What is the point in that? Smail 3.2.0.100-4 is from unstable. It has some new anti-spam features, which cause problems in a case like yours. On dialup-connections this can/will cause problems. How do I cut or removed the lines of a file starting from the EOF (end of the file) up to the 500th lines? If I am understanding you want to remove all lines after the 500th line? I would tend to use vi or pico and just highlight the unwanted text and delete it. Will tr, cut or sed be used? can someone point me to some web pages where there are tutorials or books about tr,cut, sed or awk? Otherwise assuming it was a text file I would most likely just do: head -500 testfilename newfilename.txt That will take the first 500 lines of testfilename and 'copy' them into a file called newfilename.txt Hope this helps, Adam. I now want to set it to GMT so I don't have to change it when daylight savings kicks in. Look in /etc/init.d/boot. There should be a line setting the variable GMT which is later used in a call to clock. Just set that variable to -u instead of . Be certain to do a 'clock -u -w' before you shut your system down! (immediately after you make this change to /etc/init.d/boot, perhaps?) Also, what tool syncs the hardware clock to the system time? I set my system time using netdate, in my ip-up and would like to set my HW clock to that and keep it synced. Using clock -w works, but is a pain. I must look at adjtimex again, rather than just using netdate. clock -w is a pain? (and, if your hardware clock is now in universal time, you should use clock -u -w) Why can't you just put a clock -u -w statement in your ip-up script right after the call to netdate? Alternatively, I suppose that you could synchronize your hardware clock to your software clock by adding a clock -u -w statement to /etc/init.d/halt, preferably somewhere near the beginning. That way, your hardware clock would be written each time your machine rebooted or was shut down - since the value in the hardware clock is usually used only at boot time, this would seem to be enough. I'd still put the clock statement in the ip-up script too, though, to keep the hardware clock synched in case of unexpected power outages. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . I do not know for example how to produce text in Lyx like môre reën dit. Doing it using Emacs and Latex is easy and I know one is supposed to be able to do it in Lyx even using Latex functions, but so far I could not find clear explanations on how to do it or how to use Latex functions in Lyx. When I try to read the FAQ, it ends after a few pages with the remark: The remainder of the document is Incomplete. I was wandering whether anyone could use Lyx for anything serious. Are there proper documentation somewhere? As of a couple of months ago, the documentation was massively replaced. And failing that, I'd simply ask the questions first on the user mailing list, and, if that fails, on the developers list. For that matter, there's a couple of features in it that got added when I raised them on the developers list. Anyway, the documentation for accents is now there, and I think it uses dead keys. Re: mac linux
hello everyone, I have installed debian on 486, 586. was wondering if you can install debian or any linux for that matter on a mac ii si? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Isn't the IIsi one of the ones with no coprocessor? I used macbsd (www.macbsd.com) on a IIci for a few months (until the second 80mb drive stopped and there was a 486 on my desk anyway). Also, there is a 68k linux project out there. Roughly last summer, they got as far as machines attempting to allow logins. It may very well be running by now. However, if you have no coprocessor, fonts can become a nightmare. The 68030 with coprocessor will compare, roughly, to a 486 at 1.5x the clock rate--at least if there is a cache on the 030 (or none on the 486). I found the 486/33 and 030/25 painfully slow--measured in minutes--on fonts. And for a while it was thought that Mosaic hung macbsd without a coprocessor. RIght until someone started it and was interrupted, and came back to find that it had loaded. It just took 15 minutes to do the fonts. And since X is (at least was) single threaded, the whole interface hangs. Anyway, if you do put it on there, make sure that you use xfs. It won't speed things up, but it means that the display will come back to you, and you can do other things while it renders fonts. -- These opinions will not be those of ISU until it pays my retainer. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: Two Monitors
(Sorry for the delayed reply; I haven't been reading the Debian lists for a while.) There's a package in hamm called x2x which will take two separate X displays (e.g. :0 and :1) and allow you to move the mouse and keyboard focus between the two. You can either have a button to click which warps the pointer to the other display, or set it up so that pushing the mouse off the edge of one screen makes it reappear on the other. It won't allow you to move windows between displays, and you'll have to run two copies of your window manager, but it seems to work. Unless you have libc6 installed, you'll have to get the source code from hamm and recompile it. following hamm upgrade dselect can't find Packages file
Hi, I used the auto-upgrade script to upgrade to hamm, then used dselect | ftp to upgrade a couple hundred packages in /hamm/hamm, then after I was through I rebooted and life was good. Good work, Debian Team. :-) Then I restarted dselect and decided to upgrade /hamm/non-free and /hamm/contrib, but now dselect can't find the Packages files. Re: Which Linux distribution???
Debian Linux, of course, is the best distribution :). But I really do believe that or I wouldn't be using it. To determine whether your hardware is supported or not you should consult the HOWTOs. A HOWTO index is located at http://www.linux.org/help/howto.html. Look through there until you see the Hardware Compatibility HOWTO. Coincidentally I'm resarching this issue myself for a RD networking lab I'm building at work that will use PCs/Debian as hosts. As far as I know, I don't think there is anything on your list of hardware that will give you any trouble. I don't think your video card is supported by the current release of XFree86 (for X windows), but it is supported (pretty well to all reports) by the S.u.S.E. project -- visit http://www.suse.com. Of course any problems/questions you encounter along the way will be answered promptly by this list's membership. Another great reason to choose Debian. Are these CDs usefull to a debian user? I'd assume not. OK, so, what would be a good book to act as a secondary to Running Linux - Welsh Kaufman (O'Reilly Assc.). I like this book. The syntax and representations are pretty well thought out and I don't get lost in the terms. Are there ANY books that have debian distribs with them? Why does it seem that sometimes Debian is like the annoying brother to RH and SW? It doesn't get a lot of outward promotion and seems ignored. I never even heard of it until I saw the boot issue.
