No podrías moverlas, minimizar, maximizar y demás. ¿Has mirado los HOWTOs? Re: Mouse, please help
Hi, Hello, I have a problem with the mouse. After the installation finished, and i startx there is no mouse. I see an x in the middle of the screen. snip I recently installed Debian too. What kind of mouse do you have? If you have a ps/2 mouse like I do then perhaps this will help: 1) When you go through the installation steps, make sure you install the psaux mouse driver under the misc menu when you are configuring drivers for the kernel. 2) When you run the XF86Setup you can use the tab key to bounce around the menus. Make sure you pick a PS/2 mouse and then you must use the /dev/psaux as your mouse device. Tab over to the apply button and hit enter. Your mouse should work then. 3) After installation I made sure my /dev/mouse symbolic link was pointing to /dev/psaux in case some application needs it. Good luck, Brian

Re-Partioning
Hi, I put my /var on it's own partion, but didn't realize it got used so much and made it too small. Several times it has almost filled up during apt-gets. I also have /usr/local on another partion which is pretty much empty. Can I tar off the contents of /var and /usr/local and put them on one of my bigger drives, then go back (using the rescue floppy) and combine my /var and /usr/local partions into one big /var without destroying my other partions and their data? Thanks, BN
Re: PLIP
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far way, someone said... I'd like to connect two computer ( on both debian 2.1 ) with paralel cable using PLIP. Fair enough. Should I give the command 'ifconfig ' 'route ...' on both or on one computer? 'ifconfig' and 'route' needs to be run on both computers. This is how I remember doing plip (I've graduated to ethernet since then): On one computer: load plip modules 'ifconfig plip0 192.168.0.1 pointopoint 192.168.0.2 dev plip0' 'route add -host 192.168.0.2 dev plip0' On the other computer: load plip modules 'ifconfig plip0 192.168.0.2 pointopoint 192.168.0.1 dev plip0' 'route add -host 192.168.0.1 dev plip0' Keep in mind, though, that it's been roughly two years since I've played around with this, and that I've probably gotten something wrong. If it possible I'd like to use two directional traffic. In that case, you'll be glad to hear that plip is bi-directional and only bi-directional. -- -- Phil Brutsche [EMAIL PROTECTED] There are two things that are infinite; Human stupidity and the universe. Re: trouble installing debian
I'm having trouble installing debian on my system. It's an IBM PS/1, 486sx33 w/ 8mb ram, and a 1.2gb quantum fireball hard drive, with 5 partitions. I put the rescue disk in my floppy drive, reboot, and press enter at the boot: prompt. There is some disk activity for a few seconds, and then the system freezes (the floppy drive light stays on, but there is no activity). I've tried several things to fix this problem, such as using different disks with the resc1440.bin disk image, all of them surface scanned before rawriting, using the resc1440-safe, resc1440-tecra, resc1440-safe-tecra disk images, and booting by typing linux floppy=thinkpad. Is there any other way that I can get linux to boot from my floppy drive? If not, would installing off of my HD's 5th partition, reformatting partitions 1-4, and then reformatting partition 5 once linux is up and running cause problems? DOS and OnTrack are on the 1st partition, and win95 is on the 2nd. You might want to look at Installing Debian GNU/Linux http://www.debian.org/releases/slink/i386/install.en.txt For example, it has a section on (5.3.1) Installing from a DOS partition.

Dual-ethernet
Hi, I'm wondering whether it's possible to load ne.o module for a dual ethernet machine. Can it be done? I have tried to load the same module twice (with different iobase's), but it wouldn't work. Do I have to recompile the kernel for including the support for NE2K in it? TIA, Oki
2nd Linux installation
I'm a relative newbie to linux with a working Red Hat 6.0 system, but I would like to migrate to Debian. To do so I would like to install to a second hd, and keep my Red Hat until I've felt out Debian, but I have a few questions. One of the things I use the linux box for is an FTP server for my LAN, and I was wondering if it is okay to share the /home/ftp/pub directory between the 2 distros so that as it gets modified in one distro the modifications will be updated in the other. For example if my partitions are: hda /dev/hda1 /boot /dev/hda2 / /dev/hda3 /usr /dev/hda4 swap hdb /dev/hdb1 /boot /dev/hdb2 / /dev/hdb3 /usr /dev/hdb4 swap /dev/hdb5 /home/ftp/pub shared between both distros will this work? I should be able to boot the second distro through the existing lilo file on my mbr of hda correct? I need to edit lilo.conf but then what is the rest of the proceedure for that? One other question for now. The second hd is a 15.2 gb Ibm which is autodetected in the bios, are there any problems with that, or are there boot parameters I should have in Lilo?

Anyway, I have a public ftp server, and I need to create a special account for ftp administering (ftpadmin). This account can only be to accessed via ftp, to put files and take files off. The user can not acces via anything else, only ftp access. if your using potato this is easy to setup with pam, I add: auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/deny.shell onerr=succeed to all interactive shell services and any other service i do not want such a user to access. this way he is allowed into FTP but all other access attempts fail. if you do not use potato probably the best bet is using falselogin add it to /etc/shells and make it the login shell for that user, he will still be able to login to things like telnet and ssh, but instead of getting a shell he just gets a message saying go away and is logged out. (I actually do both for good measure) the other thing you could do that you may prefer is add /usr/bin/passwd to /etc/shells and set his login shell to that, then he can ssh (or *bleak* telnet) in and he immediately gets a prompt to change his passwd as soon as he does the connection is closed. you probably want him to change his passwd very often anyway since ftp has this annoying tendency to send passwords flying across the network in clear. I also need to find out how to create the incoming directory in such a manner that users can place files there, but not delete. I also want to create a directory called private, where only a ftpadmin can access it to modify and place things. Do I ask for much ? I 'm not sure, but I sure am stuck. . . .Thanks in advance for the help !!! just add the sticky bit to the incoming directory chmod +t incoming should do it, this will let him only delete files that he owns (just like /tmp) if you want to allow him to upload but not see what is in the directory then make the permissions he falls under (either group or world) mode 3 (write and execute only) if you use wu-ftpd (probably not a good idea unfortunately since its so good at giving out root accounts) you get quite a bit more control over what who and do what on incoming directories such as forbidding the upload of directories (common way ftpd root exploits must be performed) and configuring so that files uploaded have the owners and permissions changed so the uploader no longer has access. and other such niceties. if you use the plain ftpd with debian add your user to the /etc/ftpchroot file. create a bin, etc and lib directories in his home directory copy /bin/ls to ~ftpadmin/bin/ then chmod -R 111 ~ftpadmin/bin/ copy /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (may be different number of your system) to ~ftpadmin/lib/ and chmod 555 ~ftpadmin/lib/ld-linux.so.2 copy /lib/libc.so.6, /lib/libnss_files-X-X-X.so to there as well (where X.X.X is the version number on your system), chmod 444 them cd ~ftpadmin/lib ; ln -s libnss_files-X.X.X.so libnss_files.so.1 and ln -s libnss_files-X.X.X.so libnss_files.so.2. chmod 111 ~ftpadmin/lib now create a group file in ~ftpadmin/etc in the format root:*:0: just like the real /etc/group except do not show the members, this file is only used by ls to show real group names instead of gids, so only add groups to this file that you want to show up as a real name (you could make a fake name if you wanted too.) do the same for ~ftpadmin/etc/passwd make sure there are no real passwords in that file, it should look like: root:*:0:0::: only add users to this file that you want to show up properly in the listings, its probably best to only add a couple rather then your entire system's /etc/passwd so you do not give away all the account names on your system. you do not have to use the same names as the real accounts, just the same ids, and any name you want, this file is only used by ls nothing else. do not add the gecos feild or home directorys to this file as it gives to much information about your system away. after you do that chmod 444 ~ftpadmin/etc/* and chmod 111 ~ftpadmin/etc mkdir ~ftpadmin/pub and do a chmod 555 ~ftpadmin and add the incoming directory. that should do it, if you use wu-ftpd and want to take advantage of some of its guest user features read the ftpaccess man page as its pretty good, but well test it as its a little buggy in its config parsing... A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far way, someone said... From what I can tell from the LILO documentation, LILO can't boot from the slave drive on the primary IDE controller. Is this correct? Nope. I don't want to try the linear option because I may need to boot from a floppy in the future. Specifying disk = /dev/hdb bios = 0x81 did not make the HD bootable. boot.b, vmlinuz, and everything else is properly located in /boot on hdb1 my bios supports a D drive boot, and the LI error says it's geometry or you haven't written a new boot.b and I've tried both. from what i saw in beta 2 it was a VERY stripped version of slink. At their site I read something about their KDE version being an enhanced one of 1.1.2, but from the looks of things, it's 1.1.2 enhanced with KDE2 features (the panel shortcut icons and taskbar are on one row a lot like how Gnome has things except the screenshot I looked at looked exactly like how they did it in KDE2). it had less then 150 packages(that were selectable during install at least) i just checked the beta 2 install i ahve going and it has about 295 packages total(that is a full install) its a far cry from a 2000+ package slink or a 4000+ package potato. I think xdselect (if there's any such thing) would be a lot neater than dselect. I do not upgrade my boxes via ftp, I allways (more or less :-)) ) wait till the new release is assembled in CD images. Why would I switch to apt? Apt is better at package ordering - sometimes, depending on what you've selected, dselect takes a couple of passes to get everything in. Apt is smarter and faster - most dselect methods work through the entire package list (skipping kernel-header-2.0.33\nskipping etc. etc.), apt works through only those packages that will be installed or removed. Apt is more flexible - with apt you can use CDs, FTP sites and local package repositories as sources in a single operation, and apt will seamlessly get the packages you select from wherever is most convenient (based on the order in which the sources appear in /etc/apt/sources.list). Dselect can do apt, but apt can't do dselect - Apt provides a dselect access method, so you can do all your source configuration with apt and then get the benefit of both the unified, screen-oriented dselect interface you're used to and the convenience of just going (e.g.) # apt-get install xemacs20 when you want to install a new package. One of the things I use the linux box for is an FTP server for my LAN, and I was wondering if it is okay to share the /home/ftp/pub directory between the 2 distros so that as it gets modified in one distro the modifications will be updated in the other. Sure, should be no problem. I should be able to boot the second distro through the existing lilo file on my mbr of hda correct? I need to edit lilo.conf but then what is the rest of the proceedure for that? When you install Debian, make a boot floppy (just in case) but do *not* ask Debian to make your hard disk bootable. After you've installed Debian, add a section for the Debian system to RH's lilo.conf, like maybe: image=/mnt/vmlinuz-2.0.36 label=Debian read-only root=/dev/hdb2 Then mount /dev/hdb1 on /mnt so that Lilo can see the kernel you want to boot: # mount -t ext2 -o defaults,ro /dev/hdb1 /mnt and run Lilo. The 'image=' line must point to the kernel you want to boot Debian with; it doesn't matter if it doesn't have the same path as when the Debian system boots - Lilo just needs to find out what sectors to load. At boot time, you should be able to tap the shift key at the LILO prompt to get a 'boot:' prompt, and then type 'Debian' to select the Debian system. One other question for now. The second hd is a 15.2 gb Ibm which is autodetected in the bios, are there any problems with that, or are there boot parameters I should have in Lilo? Many people have reported difficulty getting the screen-based cfdisk that the Debian install uses to recognise hard disks over 8Gb. To avoid using cfdisk, either create all your partitions under RH before installing, or swap to an alternate vt when you get to the Partition a hard disk step by pressing (e.g.) Alt-F2 and then press enter; you will get a root prompt, and you can run the line-oriented fdisk program here which is a little less friendly, but should work OK. Press Alt-F1 when you're done to return to the installer, and select your partitions just as you would if you'd used cfdisk. Re: [ftp] ftpadmin user, private directories, incoming and notmuch more. . .
Hi Ethan; Thanks for the help. . . I use proftpd under slink, but I'll try and apply this to it :) Ethan Benson wrote: On 18/11/99 Neil D. Roberts wrote: This is my first mail here, so hi to all. . .I have a little problem, lack of knowledge is what I call it. Anyway, I have a public ftp server, and I need to create a special account for ftp administering (ftpadmin). This account can only be to accessed via ftp, to put files and take files off. The user can not acces via anything else, only ftp access. if your using potato this is easy to setup with pam, I add: authrequiredpam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/deny.shell onerr=succeed to all interactive shell services and any other service i do not want such a user to access. this way he is allowed into FTP but all other access attempts fail. if you do not use potato probably the best bet is using falselogin add it to /etc/shells and make it the login shell for that user, he will still be able to login to things like telnet and ssh, but instead of getting a shell he just gets a message saying go away and is logged out. (and i cannot recommend wu-ftpd or proftpd anymore as they have just too many security problems) Best Regards, Ethan Benson To obtain my PGP key: http://www.alaska.net/~erbenson/pgp/ -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null -- * Neil David John Roberts -

Re: Netscape 4.71 Is Rock Solid Fast! (solution... sort of)
Here's a solution to the netscape bus error problems: http://members.ping.at/theofilu/netscape.html I had _all_ the problems several people on the debian-user list mentioned last month. I'm trying to follow the latest potato releases. Even got communicator 4.7 installed from there - it's not in the packages list yet but the debs are there. Still lots of netscape bus errors. I installed the 'solution' from the above URL (with minor modifications to the included script) and netscape became much more stable. Major point: it's not (only) a problem with glibc 2.0 or 2.1 but (also) with libXpm. I found another reference to libXpm and the netscape bus errors on the SuSe website (with a search on AltaVista [+netscape +bus error]).
