Must have had this in my mind from the pre gub (lilo days), but as pointed out
by a previous email grub-install on the other disk should do it or I am
guessing dd in the mbr and dd out.

Most of my machines allow for boot from the first drive or from the second
drive.

that's not true yet. grub2 supposedly supports RAID booting, but
grub1 actually boots off one of the raid1 disks, not the raid1

but does require you to make sure your BIOS and grub configuration

well... I don't know what to tell you. Couple things you could
try. First, can you get to the net from this machine? I know its
basic, but sometimes...

Also, edit /etc/default/exim4 and put a QUEUERUNNEROPTION='-d' in
there, restart exim4 and look at all the pretty output and see if you
can see why its not routeing the address.

also look at man exim as there are a number of options for running
exim in various debugging modes that might help.

I've never had a problem with exim... it mostly just works for me in a
number of configurations, so without sitting down and seeing _exactly_
how its configured, I'm out of ideas.

okay, no you're right... the booting is fine so long as you have an
mbr... its the mbr that's the trick.

so to the OP, you have to get yourself into a bootloader somehow and
unless you actually install the bootloader onto each disk, then no,
you can't just boot up any one disk from a raid1 array. There are
other ways to get to a bootloader though: a grub floppy or cd for
example, or you can just manually install grub to each drive.

thanks mike!

If this is in roots personal crontab then you don't need to tell cron to

this was the case hasn't been the case for a while, I believe the new (?) etch
installer lets you install to raid boot/root.

My standard build setup now a days is 500m raid 1 parition on disk 1 and 2 for
/boot, the rest of the drive for raid ( 1 or 5 - depending on how many drives I
have) I then use this space and place lvm on top if it and go from there. a lv
for /, for /var/log, for /tmp

I don;t have to worry about dying controller cards and incompatibilities and I
am in the early stages of growing my raid5 from 200G drives to 500G drives live

You will have to type a few commands, 1 to add the drive to the array - I think
the module is the place you do the throttling.

Plus best to raid partitions and not whole drives

Typically I grub-install to each of the mirrors and then to

hmmm... my system boots from grub just fine with no magic. This is
using a raid1 /boot partition mirrored over 4 drives (for
convenience). I can manually edit the boot stanzas to boot from any of
the partitions in that array and it works fine.

my grub stanza

title Xen 3.0.3-1-i386 / Debian GNU/Linux, kernel
2.6.18-4-xen-686
root(hd0,0)
kernel /xen-3.0.3-1-i386.gz
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-4-xen-686 root=/dev/md1 ro
console=tty0 pciback.hide=(:02:08.0)
module /initrd.img-2.6.18-4-xen-686
savedefault

note the root line (hd0,0). that could just as easily be (hd1,0) or
(hd2,0) or (hd3,0). I know I tested it when I built the array, but now
you've got me worried that maybe it doesn't work. ack.

my pertinent array looks like this:

md0 : active raid1 hda1[0] hde1[3] hdg1[2] hdc1[1]
  248896 blocks [4/4] []

and is mounted on /boot.

Am I missing something?

With software RAID 1 yes. (But not with other RAID levels.)

Software RAID usually mirrors partitions rather than whole drives.

You'll need to partition the new drive and add the new partititions to
the RAIDs. A couple of minutes work. The mirrors will then rebuild.

Yes. You can change the speedlimits by echoing integers into
/proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_{min,max}

See http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/06/msg00379.html and the
entire thread. Very interesting. Besides, aptitude does not implement
some of apt-get's functions (source, build-depends, ...).

In my understanding, the devs (of APT and aptitude) are
going towards moving all advanced functions into APT so all
frontends (synaptic, adept, ...) can take advantage of them.

As said before in the original thread, this problem should be solved by
now. If you still encounter problems please do file a bug. Daniel
Burrows (the maintainer) is very responsive AFAICT.

how to bypass multimedia keys in xscreensavers-lock-mode?

2007-07-18 Thread Raphael Brunner
Hi all

Does anyone know a solution to bypass some keys at xscreensaver's
locked-mode? If the screen is locked, and I press the key volume-up,
then the password-box appears and the volume doesn't change.

Google show many users with the same problem in older times... is there
now a solution for this problem/feature?

Thanks a lot!

The rfc that details proxy's (if you trying to get through a corporate firewall
and they have a proxy), is to allow port 563 through as well as 443 (https).
563 is nntps - strangely a lot of proxies are by default configured to let this
through.

I guess its supposed to be, but how well that works is debatable. My
very rough understanding is that some of the stuff is _not_ platform
independent. just to refresh my memory, which JRE are you running?

A

My version is sun-java6-jre (apparently arch independent).

I was able to capture some error code when accessing the site. This is
the result of my attempt to call

javascript:parent.chat_applet_frame.document.chatapplet.openRoom1()

Error: node : TypeError: Value undefined (result of expression
parent.chat_applet_frame.document.chatapplet.openRoom1) is not an object.
Cannot be called.

I don't much about this kind of thing, but I'd say that this appears
quite obvious that the fault is on the site side rather than on my side
... except this is where I spoofed the user agent string, so don't know
if that confused things a bit.

Sebastien,

I feel like it's important that we at least discuss our ideas

I am wondering what our next action should be. Should we set up a

in a mailing list? I am able to host a mailing list so that we can
further discuss this idea if you think that would work out well. I'm
pretty psyched about getting this started.

So, what do you think about me creating a mailing list for us to flesh
out our ideas? This will also help us get this discussion off of

Re: which package can compress VCD file to a different format?

2007-07-18 Thread Avi Rozen
ffmpeg, mencoder, and transcode are obvious tools for this, but
getting nice enough results can be pretty tricky... lots of codecs,
lots of options... very little time...

avidemux is a very nice gui app that is meant to be "virtualdub for
linux" - but the first avi that I tried to compress from 2.1GB to
700MB, had playback problems due to bad handling of B-frames in the
original clip. YMMV.

I'm currently using ripmake - a perl script that generates a makefile
that runs transcode and other tools. It's rather easy to use, and it
can also generate a sample clip, so that you can tune the parameters
before running the complete job:

ripmake -c 1 clip.avi avi # "-c 1" selects one cd target size
make -f clip-avi.mak rip

All tools courtesy of the debian-mutimedia repo.

Have fun,
Avi.

No! Please don't recommend doing that. While aptitude and apt-get are both
front ends for dpkg, they are quite different in how they operate. Sure,
aptitude will accept many of the same paramaters as apt-get, but it's
dependency handling is quite different.

If one uses only aptitude, there is no problem, but if one mixes the two
commands, then aptitude will eventually get confused and want to remove vital
components.

What is worse, is that when running Sid, aptitude gets confused on packages
disappearing, or being renamed. It's recoverable, but a royal PITA when
having to deal with the problem. This point is of course irrelavent if one
is running Etch. With Lenny, it's somewhat relavent.

Joe

I second the bigness of the removal of deps benefit. I also like the
historical record in /var/log/aptitude, the integrated apt-cache
features, and the perhaps mistaken perception that aptitude seems to
be better able to resolve conflicts when they occur. I also like that
it has two UI's: both are often handy.

I've heard stories that cyclists in Münster ride with stretched elbows

Next, grep supports what most would now call a subset of full regular

when you put a backslash in front of the pipe symbol, 'grep' simply looks
for the literal string 'in|hill', which does not exist in the file. Add it
and you'll see it work.

Actually, grep will treat the pipe as alternation, if it's backslash
escaped:

Interesting, I was not aware of this. So I checked the man page and
found this:

---
grep understands three different versions of regular expression syntax:
“basic,” “extended,” and “perl.” In GNU grep, there is no difference
in available functionality using either of the first two syntaxes. In
other implementations, basic regular expressions are less powerful. The
following description applies to extended regular expressions;
differences for basic regular expressions are summarized afterwards.

and:
---
In basic regular expressions the metacharacters ?, +, {, |, (, and )
lose their special meaning; instead use the backslashed versions \?,
\+, \{, \|, \(, and \).

Just goes to show that reading the man page can often help ;)
particularly when portability is an issue.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo -e 'in the grey morning\nwe climbed the hill.' | grep
'in\|hill'
in the grey morning
we climbed the hill.

Note that I had to double-escape the pipe: once using single-quotes to
hide it from the shell, and once with a backslash to tell grep it was
special. I could have written:

grep in\\\|hill

but that would have been gross and nasty. :)

I guess its supposed to be, but how well that works is debatable. My
very rough understanding is that some of the stuff is _not_ platform
independent. just to refresh my memory, which JRE are you running?

we're talking about exim on the machine that is trying to send the
mail, correct? in that case, no this is not the problem. relaying is
taking mail from one server and sending it to another, and you are not
doing that, unless I misunderstand.

other than possibly the 127.0.0.1 above, i don't think so. how about
providing the relevant snips from /var/log/exim4/mainlog when trying

Not true. dnsmasq will read /etc/hosts (or another file with the
same format, if you prefer) and serve both forward and reverse
lookups from it. It'll lookup and cache anything it can't resolve
from local files. I use it all the time for providing local DNS
views on private networks. It's a nice, lightweight solution. It
also comes with an integrated DHCP server. It's a very handy thing
to run on a box that's serving as a NAT gateway.

If you control the firewalls, the obvious answer would be to open the
port that OpenVPN is using. But I assume you'd have done that
already if that was the case.

Ideally, you could find a port the firewall doesn't block that you're
not using for other purposes. For example, many firewalls allow
HTTPS on TCP port 443, so you could try that one. UDP port 53 is
another possibility; it's usually left open for DNS purposes.

Mencoder will do it. If you look in the documentation for the

what you want. One nice thing about Mencoder is it doesn't

When the ISOs are updated, the Debian release number is incremented.
We will have a Debian Etch 4.0r1 with all security update at that time.

Since then, you must update after or during installation.
By doing a network installation, you will have less to update after
installation.

Perhaps you can build newer ISO with Jigdo ? I don't know.

fail2ban automatically bans ip's after a specified number of

to deter most... and still let you in if you make a mistake.

make sure you aren't running any services you don't need and keep your

openvpn in spite of firewalls

Seems that firewalls block successfully (sarcasm).
Nevertheless, http, ssh, ftp and a few other protocols

Is there any chance of using one of the open ports for
the tunnel between the two machines?  For example,
can the tunnel between 10.4.0.1 and 10.4.0.2 use port
22 while ssh uses it for other connections?

Can a proxy server solve this?

Is there any other way to connect the tunnel in spite

what exactly did you try here? I would try using dpkg directly to

Also, do you have a backup of /var to use?

hmmm... a little digging turns up this...

there are .list files in /var/lib/dpkg/info for each
installed package. Maybe you could check on the status of those .list
files for each damaged package and possibly you could either extract
them from the deb or get a copy from someone.

Security newbie?

2007-07-18 Thread Art Edwards
I've been running debian @ home and @ work, for years, had no indication
of attacks. Over the last few days, my iptables firewall seemed simply
to stop. I checked my auth log file to find many, many attempts to break
in. My firewall was very simple. I have since added rules to drop
packets from offending IP addresses. So, I have a couple of very basic
questions:

1. Are there repositories of offending IP addresses to block? Can/should
one contribute to these?

2. The attacks never use the same user name more than once. Is there a
way to block access, even temporarily, from an IP address after a set
number of attempts, even if the attempts use different user names?

3. Are there other obvious things I should be doing?

how is your mailer configured? looks to me like you need to re-run

dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config

and pick an option that allows outgoing mail.

what option did you pick in the reconfigure you mentioned previously?

After doing that, I still can't send email. Doing a "date | mail -s

Any idea what I'm going wrong?

Debian comes with exim4 by default. You will probably have had this
removed by installing sendmail. Unless you are already a sendmail guru,
I'd recommend reinstalling exim4.

You can reconfigure it using "dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config". Most of
the questions are straightforward.
There is additional information available at
.

Exim4 and most MTAs come with a "sendmail" binary that supports the same
options as the traditional sendmail does:
however, for command line mailing, "mail" or "mail x" are best.

Try:

date | mail -s "testing" your.address

And read /var/log/exim4/mainlog to see what happened.

More fun (not!) with JRE

2007-07-18 Thread andy

Dear Debianistas

A wee while ago, some of you were kind and patient in helping me out in
my efforts to access a website that relied on Java (JRE). Despite your
best efforts, I am still unable to access the site in the way the
developers (and the course administrators) expect me to. It is supposed
to be a chat window of some sort, and I tested it from work today, and
it still doesn't work using an XP machine with IE6. I don't know if I am
the only one with these issues, and I'd love to point you in the
direction of the site, but it is password protected and in good
conscience, I cannot give out the logon details here.

I am beginning to feel compelled to start an argument with the course
admin about their reliance on this piece of software for their distance
learning option, and I was wondering if there are any developers/people
in the know here who have any substantive arguments against the use of
JRE? On the target web-page, they have a long list of error codes, etc.
and ways of fixing these (allegedly) which amount to updating to the
latest JRE, and this suggests that others have also found this to be buggy.

It is bad enough that so many training courses and universities still
develop these distance learning courses with only Windows (or at most
with Mac) in mind, but then to get stuck and excluded because of some
crummy JRE applet not functioning as it should just really pisses me
off. I'd like to raise this issue to the course admins awareness, and
would appreciate any input if you feel you have a contribution to make.
Or, alternatively, is it just me and I'm merely being a trifle grumpy in
my old(er) age?

Thanks

Andy

I haven't seen any updates to the etch iso's yet. They are updated
periodically, maybe once or twice a year. It's only been three months since
etch was released so I think there will be a short wait for them but they
will be updated in time.

Actually, grep will treat the pipe as alternation, if it's backslash
escaped:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo -e 'in the grey morning\nwe climbed the hill.' | grep
'in\|hill'
in the grey morning
we climbed the hill.

Note that I had to double-escape the pipe: once using single-quotes to
hide it from the shell, and once with a backslash to tell grep it was
special. I could have written:

grep in\\\|hill

but that would have been gross and nasty. :)

Something else maybe equally as strange . If I run a file system
check while the partition is mounted but using the -n argument so no
changes will be made (the disk is mounted) I get all sorts of errors
being reported. But if I bootup sysrescuecd, and run the same check,
both partitions get a clean bill of health. The only difference is the
kernel...2.6.21 , but 2.6.20 under sysrescuecd.
Is it possible the latest Kernel has some file system bugs?

Cheers

I'll try but every attempt to do anything to the file so far has been

you can save few seconds during boot, and safely ignore those messages.

Logwatch's functionning

2007-07-18 Thread nawshad hoossanbuksh

hello everyone,

i am currently using logwatch to monitor different logfiles. Actually i
am trying to deal with a postfix logfile, but in vain. Logwatch does not
seem to get any line in input for treatment. I try to do the following for
debugging, but i get nothing in return:

in the file ../scripts/services/postfix i did

while (defined($ThisLine = )) {
print "\n$ThisLine"; ##line added for debugging
  if (
 ( $ThisLine =~ m/^$re_MsgID: client=([^ ]*\[[^ ]*\])\s*$/ ) or
 ( $ThisLine =~ m/^$re_MsgID: message-id/ ) or

but i get nothing in return, except that.
- postfix Begin

-- postfix End -

In my maillog, im sure i put the correct path to my logfile:

LogFile = /var/log/maya/postfix.log

It seems that the STDIN is empty, though for other services, such as qpopper
or httpd, i get the usual stats from logwatch.

I think iv missed something in logwatch functionning. Can anyone help me
please??

Thank you very much for any help.

Leave those as is.

then on the client do

$>sudo ifconfig

to get the ip address of the client; then log into the server and add
a line in
/etc/hosts with the client's ip address hostname and alias

http://www.faqs.org/docs/securing/chap9sec95.html

Also helps to check /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow to see if you
have blocked yourself somehow, e.g. if you do hosts.deny ALL then
nobody gets in without an entry in hosts.allow

Lots of documentation available on this as it's a security matter,
just google on /etc/hosts and hosts.allow

http://lartc.org/lartc.html#LARTC.RPDB.MULTIPLE-LINKS

Thanks for the link but it isn't clear to me how this is relevant to what I'm
attempting to do. I have two interfaces: eth1 172.16.100.101 and eth2
172.16.200.101.

My apologies, I assumed you had two ISP connections. I wrongly assumed
ping would behave the same as traceroute. I just checked on my desktop,
which has two interfaces on different networks, eth0 on a 10.0.x.x
network, and the eth1 being 192.168.0.1.

ping -I eth0 192.168.0.1 works

but

traceroute -i eth0 192.168.0.1 shows the traffic going out via my
default route on the 10.0.x.x network.

I was sure I've done this with two ISP connections before, but seeing
how ping behaves differently from traceroute, I'm now unsure. What I do
remember is doing a traceroute from the one interface to the other and
seeing that it does in fact go out the one interface, all the way
through the internet and back into the other.

I had an ML-1450 which worked brilliantly on CUPS (as an HP laserjet) straight
out of the box. I tried the Linux driver on the CD ("supported for Red Hat"). It
worked (after a little tweaking with symlinks, perhaps permissoins too) but was
not worth the effort.

I recently bought an ML-2570. The CD contains a ppd driver for CUPS. It works
well except for OOo, so I use the generic CUPS PostScript driver. I did report
this bug to Samsung, but I had no reply. The generic CUPS PostScript driver does
not provide a control for toner-save mode but otherwise works flawlessly. I
documented all this in the openprinting.org database [1].

I would suggest that you dig out the ppd driver from the Samsung CD (or CD
download from website) and try that with CUPS.

Given the specs of your battery (10.8V 4.8Ah, i.e. 51Wh), an autonomy of one

a laptop, unless you keep it constantly in stress test (with full CPU and
disk, and graphics card load).
So I'd guess that your battery's original lifetime is a good bit longer (at
least 2h), and that when it lasted an hour, it was already on its death bed.

You are spot on. The original life was about 3:30 in "normal" use, but
the motherboard died and since I got it back from HP (actually, it was
the "HP certified partner" who fixed it), it's been about an hour. In
hindsight they probably swopped out the battery, since the notebook was
only two months old at the time. Anyway, after sending the original
mail I tried running it down a few times (used memtest86 so there's no
OS involved) and recharging it, and each time the recharge and discharge
times were shorter. After three times it died completely.

Get a new one, or try refilling this one.

New one on order...

Which sound card is this exactly? Please post the relevant part of your
"lspci" output; maybe somebody knows something about specific issues
with your card.

Maybe you simply need to upgrade to a newer kernel. You can check the
changelogs if there were any recent changes that might be important for
your card:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.22.y.git;a=tree;f=sound/pci/hda

(See the "history" links.)

www.backports.org has 2.6.21 kernel images for Etch.

It is also known that snd_hda_intel sometimes has to be loaded with
certain additional parameters set by the user; see here for a random
example:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Clevo_M38AW#Audio_with_ALSA

You might have to google around for your card, or post your problem on
the alsa forums.

I have summarised the result of that thread at the end of the NewbieDOC sound
article [1]. If your problem is a result of ALSA incorrectly loading/unloading
kernel modules, Florian Kulzer suggests running "udevtrigger --verbose
--subsystem-match=sound" [2].

However, I don't think that this is your problem.

The result for me is
numid=26,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Source'
numid=27,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Switch'
numid=28,iface=MIXER,name='Capture Volume'

I think that the problem may lie with amixer. If I run "amixer scontrols", it
reports almost all my settings at zero!
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Simple mixer control 'Master Mono',0
Simple mixer control 'Master Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Headphone Jack Sense',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
[...]

However, alsamixer, gnome etc all show that eg my master volume (Master) is set
at 77%.

Can you set a new sound level for Master in alsamixer? Is the new level
persistent?

To test out I use my another Unbuntu laptop and changed the /etc/
resolv.conf read aa below:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ more /etc/resolv.conf
search mxoffice.in
nameserver 192.168.1.55

nslookup google.com on the ubuntu laptop gives me the right result but
use nslookup to test mxoffice.in gives me the following error:
4Error---begin$$$
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nslookup mxoffice.in
Server: 192.168.1.55
Address:192.168.1.55#53

** server can't find mxoffice.in: SERVFAIL
$$$---errorend---

Did my LAN dns server set up correctly? Does the above nslookup right
way of testing that out? If any of you could give me some assistance,
I would really appreciate it?

Blessings,
Rocky

If you still have the broken server.cfg could you check what was
different. I'd like to find out if it was only one config value that
changed or if you were somehow given a default server.cfg.

The package install scripts for ntlmaps read your current configuration
and store values in debconf, so if there is a difference one of the
values may not be getting stored properly.

Mismatch between UCD-SNMP-MIB and free

2007-07-18 Thread George Chelidze

Hello,

I am using up2date Debian etch with 2.6.21.5 kernel and snmpd 5.2.3-7. I
am trying to monitor total free memory through snmp. Below is a simple
output:

 CUT HERE
# snmpwalk -c  -v 2c localhost memory && free
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memIndex.0 = INTEGER: 0
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memErrorName.0 = STRING: swap
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memTotalSwap.0 = INTEGER: 3903672
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memAvailSwap.0 = INTEGER: 3903624
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memTotalReal.0 = INTEGER: 2076132
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memAvailReal.0 = INTEGER: 91948
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memTotalFree.0 = INTEGER: 3995572
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memMinimumSwap.0 = INTEGER: 16000
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memShared.0 = INTEGER: 0
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memBuffer.0 = INTEGER: 207036
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memCached.0 = INTEGER: 1509916
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memSwapError.0 = INTEGER: 0
UCD-SNMP-MIB::memSwapErrorMsg.0 = STRING:
total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 20761321984184 91948 0 2070361509916
-/+ buffers/cache: 2672321808900
Swap: 3903672 483903624
 CUT HERE

As you can see UCD-SNMP-MIB::memTotalFree.0 is wrong. free reports
correct values. Is it a known issue and if yes is there any known
workaround? Is this _BUG_ related to snmpd or kernel? Any information is
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

George

thanks for the info! I just don't switch between apt-get and aptitude
after having experienced problems a few times, so it never occured to me
those problems could have been solved in the meantime :-)

Still, if you're used to apt-get, I don't really see a reason to switch.
I always recommend aptitude, but never tell users to switch from apt-get
on a running system. If I should, please let me know the reasons.

Cheers,

- Silke -
