Amicalement, Antoine. For example, if you are trying to recover a file but are having problems, please see the Restoring When Things Go Wrong section of the Restore chapter of this manual. Normally, you will restore files by running a Restore Job from the Console program. However, bextract can be used to extract a single file or a list of files from a Bacula tape or file. In fact, bextract can be a useful tool to restore files to an empty system assuming you are able to boot, you have statically linked bextract and you have an appropriate bootstrap file. Please note that some of the current limitations of bextract are: It cannot restore access control lists (ACL) that have been backed up along with the file data. It cannot restore Win32 non-portable streams (typically default). It cannot restore encrypted files. The command line length is relatively limited, which means that you cannot enter a huge number of volumes. If you need to enter more volumes than the command line supports, please use a bootstrap file (see below). It is called: Usage: bextract [-d debug_level] device-name directory-to-store-files -b file specify a bootstrap file -dnnset debug level to nn -e file exclude list -i file include list -p proceed inspite of I/O errors -V specify Volume names (separated by |) -? print this message where device-name is the Archive Device (raw device name or full filename) of the device to be read, and directory-to-store-files is a path prefix to prepend to all the files restored. NOTE: On Windows systems, if you specify a prefix of say d:/tmp, any file that would have been restored to c:/My Documents will be restored to d:/tmp/My Documents. That is, the original drive specification will be stripped. If no prefix is specified, the file will be restored to the original drive. Extracting with Include or Exclude Lists Using the -e option, you can specify a file containing a list of files to be excluded. Wildcards can be used in the exclusion list. This option will normally be used in conjunction with the -i option (see below). Both the -e and the -i options may be specified at the same time as the - -b option. The bootstrap filters will be applied first, then the include list, then the exclude list. Likewise, and probably more importantly, with the -i option, you can specify a file that contains a list (one file per line) of files and directories to include to be restored. The list must contain the full filename with the path. If you specify a path name only, all files and subdirectories of that path will be restored. If you specify a line containing only the filename (e.g. my-file.txt) it probably will not be extracted because you have not specified the full path. For example, if the file include-list contains: /home/kern/bacula /usr/local/bin Then the command: ./bextract -i include-list -V Volume /dev/nst0 /tmp will restore from the Bacula archive /dev/nst0 all files and directories in the backup from /home/kern/bacula and from /usr/local/bin. The restored files will be placed in a file of the original name under the directory /tmp (i.e. /tmp/home/kern/bacula/... and /tmp/usr/local/bin/...).

Re: Using Files Without Mounting A Share From Another System
On 2011-04-25, Hal Vaughan h...@halblog.com wrote: --- SNIP --- A couple points here. I checked the source code for the Dynamic Tree Demo that is used as a JNLP demo. Now I will admit I haven't been using Java for a couple years and have some catching up to do (I think I was using Java 5, but know I've totally missed Java 6), but when I went over the source code for that demo, there was no main() method in the source. Or, more correctly, there was, but it was commented out. That, right there, is an indication that if you're writing an app in Java to be launched normally, there will be different preparations than if you're using JNLP. (I haven't used JNLP yet, but I did write some applets and even set up a couple Java apps to be both apps and applets.) I can only think that the main() method was commented out later on. A Java application deployed using JNLP has its entry point in the main method, just like any other Java application. See the third bullet point in the development tutorial[1]. I even looked at their more in depth tutorial on deploying a JNLP project, but didn't find any way to launch one, other than through a browser. (Which I don't want to do -- then I have to figure out the default browser from within a Java class on Windows, Linux, and OS X and launch it.) You don't need to do that. You simply need the relevant file association on the client. On a Debian system you have: $ grep jnlp /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache application/x-java-jnlp-file=sun-java6-javaws.desktop When the .jnlp file is accessed over HTTP using a web browser, the browser passes the file to the local javaws executable. Here the browser is simply arranging the transport. Equally, the user could access the .jnlp file using Windows Explorer or Nautilus, etc. You can even go directly to the file from the command line: javaws http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17746_01/tutorialJWS/deployment/webstart/ex6/webstart_ComponentArch_DynamicTreeDemo/dynamictree-webstart.jnlp (There is an understandable but unfortunate tendency to confuse Java Web Start with applet technology. An applet runs in isolation within a web browser (at least we hope it does). In the case of JWS, once the resources are delivered to the client then the browser or file manager is out of the picture.) You need some sort of xml file defining the app to launch and while java does not (want to) understand the smb:// protocol we are stuck. I can indeed play JNLP based java applications that are hosted online but I cannot run the java application I want to run while is on samba share. At least not directly ;-( Try using a UNC path in the JNLP descriptor, e.g., file:server/share/app.jar. Windows clients will understand that. This works on Windows, with SMB, but that brings us back to the original point: Accessing a file on a network share without mounting the share. On Windows, since SMB is built in, you can easily do that. On Linux, you can't. You can use smbclient and copy the file over to your system if it's on an SMB share, but nobody yet has provided a way to access a file on a network share from Linux without either mounting the share or copying the file over to the local computer first. Yes, that is a problem. I'm looking at Java RMI, but that involves certificates and so on and I'm still not sure if I will easily be able to put that much on a client system that is trying to run the program. And you would still have the problem of deploying Java software to each client machine. Are you in a position to put a web server on the machine which offers the network share? That would allow you to serve up a .jnlp file and its associated JAR file in a simple, standard and platform-neutral way. I'll stop evangelising now :-) [1] http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/deployment/webstart/developing.html -- Liam O'Toole Cork, Ireland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. If I have two cables connecting to both ports I think it will definitely help, but here I only be using one cable/one port and two nics bonded to one virtual nic. Your board has Realtek 8111Es for NICs. I won't sugar-coat it: that stuff cannot be called good gigabit ethernet NICs in any way. Its only saving grace is that it is dirty cheap. Try to get jumbo frames working on your network, it should help you get better throughput _if it works right_. You just have to set the MTU to the *same jumbo frame size* on *every host on your network* to enable that. But make sure your switch can handle jumbo frames first, and that such support is enabled. Example jumbo MTU sizes: 9000, 7200, 4000. Which one you can reliably use depends on the least capable device in your network and their bugs. I would expect bonding to actually make things worse with r8169-based NICs, but maybe it would distribute the interrupts better and give you better performance at the cost of wasting even more CPU resources. This is only cost-effective if you happen to have a gigabit managed switch capable of link bonding (LACP) already, or when directly connecting two computers. Bonding with just one cable simply doesn't help performance. Either the devices notice the missing link and disable the offending ports (and you'll be slightly worse off than you'd be without any bonding in the first place), or you will have the packet loss from hell. -- One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. This may be happening to other subscribers ot debian-user. If one of them, more knowledgeable than me, could look at my request for help with a procmail recipe, we might both benefit. The reason for my request was/is that a noticed these apparently well-form emails from you being caught by this complicated, and to me, unintelligible recipe. Can I unset one of apt.conf settings by -o option of apt-get?

I want to keep other settings untouched rather than unset all of them (by using an empty apt.conf instead.) Is this feasible on the current implementation? Instead I invite you to download the sample .jnlp file in the link I provided earlier and modify it to suit your LAN. Okay, I just have tried to create a JNLP file to launch the JAR file that is stored on a samba share but I'm still facing the same problem that we are encountering from the beginning: smb:// protocol is not detected ;-( If I place the test.jnlp file locally it can be run (it fails because it looks for a signature file that seems to be missed from the original jar but anyway it recognizes the JAR and tries to launch it), but when I put the same test.jnlp file over a samba share and run the app from a linux client it does not work (java.io.FileNotFoundException: smb:/host/ share/test.jnlp (No such file or directory). Needless to say the same test.jnlp that is located on the network share runs fine when it's launched from a windows client ;-( That's a pity. I suspect that smb:// it is not supported by Java because, like sftp://, it is not an official scheme[1]. So, you would have to serve the .jnlp file and its resources from an HTTP or FTP server to make the solution truly portable. Will this do much help to the throughput/speed? Looking at this, I think I am better off disabling the realtec nic and use intel® 82579 Gigabit LAN controller on the board instead.
