Suerte!
Re: Guide / Tools
It depends on your uses as others have said. In my case, I am a developer, which sadly does not uses linux at work (hopefully that'll change someday). I prefer command-line to graphical file explorer, and have a tiling window manager (command-line without that kind of wm is a little less comfortable IMHO). So, here are my favorite commands: xdg-open cd (there are some tricks, like no args, using '/' or '~' to start the arg) cp mv ls -lh find -iname '*.foo' grep -lri regex (find files containing the regex) less cat cat file | grep regex (find all regex occurrences in file) echo du --max-depth=1 -h df -h mpc (for mpd control, mpd is a music player daemon) cmake make gcc / g++ xrandr syncclient ifup ifdown ifconfig some scripts (binded by keys in my window manager or not) I have in ~/.config/scripts, like one for rotating the screen of my netbook and opening a pdf (wide screen are not nice for reading novels) and software with some gui (ncurses or gtk is the same for me, anyway I often start them with commandline): aptitude ncmpcpp vim codeblocks meld galculator gftp uzbl wesnoth :D I think that on linux, everyone have his own real world, so you will have to learn by yourself depending on your favorite tools and uses. That's why I sometimes think that maybe linux is hard to use, unlike windows. Here, we can choose, and choosing wisely needs learning. An idea for that is to build a list of tools you use, by using zim, for example (a desktop wiki, very good to take notes). PS: I am only using debian for a day to day basis since 2 years, so I still have many things to learn, and many tools that lacks me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As I said, I still consider myself as a newbie (or a very novice, take your favorite) :) 2 years can help learn a lot, but learning could be implementing with something like: learn(){ read(); understand(); memorize(); learn(); } cd (there are some tricks, like no args, using '/' or '~' to start the arg) cp To read about globbing is very important. Simply using wildcards could cause serious issues. What is globbing, and which issues can cause wildcards? Symbolic links problems? grep regex file Ho, I did not know about that... interesting :) (I am just starting to use some grep features other than find a single word in a single file...) make ifup Please don't write newbies such commands, that are completely useless for a newbie. For make, if he is a newbie only with linux, but not with development, you are wrong. Else, you are true, but we have no clue. I did not speak about using make to install softwares without packages. For ifup/down: I have no other choice for ifup with my eeepc, because when I change wifi network (actually, I change my /etc/network/interface each time, have not find/searched a good solution, without using graphical tools, which I do not need), or just enable/disable wifi, the network does not adapt itself to change, and so I must down/up it. The numpad is not a problem for me, honestly, I tend to use it very rarely... Re: Thunderbird not working with Dovecot
David Guntner: Watching the syslog, I can see what's happening when I move to another message is that a *new* login connection is being established (without closing the old one) with the IMAP server. After I've moved around enough times, the server logs a note saying that I've exceeded the number of open connections that I can have and it just stops talking to me any further until I close Thunderbird (at which point the log shows all the connections being closed. Dovecot limits both the total number of parallel connections and the number of connections per user (or per client IP address, don't remember). Either increase that or reduce the number of connections Thunderbird uses. My mail reader in my smart phone works just fine with it, BTW. :-) It probably uses fewer connections. I googled a bit and found a note about setting a Thunderbird work-around in the dovecot.conf file and applied that, but it didn't make any difference. General hint: please try to be more informative. You *are* waiting for the cached data to be flushed to the drive before unplugging it, right? hmm, I now I have tried several different USB-sticks, and I still have the problem (It perhaps isn't quite as serious as I believed though)... If having copied a big file, unmounting through Thunar pretty much always results in the following error message: Failed unmounting 'Devicename' Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. - after a short while (way before the actual writing is done) - But, if I keep waiting for some time _after_ this, the data is still written to the device as it should. However, it doesn't give any clue whatsoever to when it actually is finished writing the files to the device, so it is easy to (by mistake) physically take the USB-stick before the data is actually written. However, I do have one USB-stick, that actually lights up a LED during copying, making it pretty easy to spot when it is safe to remove it and not, but I kind of wish that that sort of feature wouldn't be necessary to safely use an USB-stick... If I don't copy any files, or just copy small files, I get that standard It's now safe to remove the device when unmounting - This is what I expect in the scenario with bigger files described above too after copying is done, but no... I do not know how slow is your USB stick but running sync in terminal should write disk cache to USB stick for sure. Re: Mail client, threads, etc... [Was: Sources.list Question]
François, a good idea to open a new subject, but keeping the id. Others might think, this is bad too. I say, use a client that enables to select, as you want the selection, even if people use the id in different ways. But it has powerfull possibilities, and is customisable using Lisp. May emacs be with you. Too funny, since somebody for the subject about tools does mention Emacs. We should be aware that newbies never ever will use (e)lisp to set up preferences for their MUAs, newsgroup thingies etc., they will use a GUI, with a menu for preferences and theay don't know about email headers and ids. Any selection on an open users list by something averaged non-experts can't know is stupid. It's completely impossible that this ever will work on an open users list. The experts and the software they use should be smarter by being more flexible. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Thunderbird not working with Dovecot
One other thing to add here - Upon initial connection, TB has no problems getting the list of messages. That pops up right away. It's only when selecting an unread message that it hangs as described below. It flags the message as read but never gets off downloading message until I click another message and then click the one I was just trying to access, at which point it displays fine. Clicking another message (already read) does cause it to open a new connection to the IMAP server though. I've been using TB forever (note: this is on a different computer, not local to the Debian box) and it never behaved this way prior to the switch to Debian and Dovecot. So if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them... :-) David Guntner grabbed a keyboard and wrote: Well, at least not completely. I've got Dovecot up and running, but for some reason, Thunderbird won't work with it quite right. I'll select an unread message, and the header will change in the display, but the body doesn't appear - the status bar just says Downloading message... and it sits there until I select another message and then go back to the one I wanted to read, at which point it displays the message. Watching the syslog, I can see what's happening when I move to another message is that a *new* login connection is being established (without closing the old one) with the IMAP server. After I've moved around enough times, the server logs a note saying that I've exceeded the number of open connections that I can have and it just stops talking to me any further until I close Thunderbird (at which point the log shows all the connections being closed. It never did this with the IMAP server that I was using on my old system My mail reader in my smart phone works just fine with it, BTW. :-) I googled a bit and found a note about setting a Thunderbird work-around in the dovecot.conf file and applied that, but it didn't make any difference.
