Yep, familiar story. Some can't get it through their thick heads that
you want support for the *internet connection* and not the computer
connected to it. If it isn't in their script, they don't know anything
about it and don't want to know.

True, as I said, this isn't L1 helpdesk material, I gave details of a
WHOIS look-up that gave an email address and telephone number you could
contact.

You'll probably note this is a different email address to your regular
helpdesk contact details, and for good reason. It is for a totally
different audience: a technical one who know how to work the `whois`
tool, know what an IP address is, and know that a serial port isn't a
place for sailors to eat breakfast.

Forward them the bounce emails you've been getting, then the ball is in
their court. I do know what it is like to deal with a clueless
helpdesk, spent many hours on the phone with a few here.

What you need is to down load ghostview at the same time. Use this gui
application to open the ps file. Have the program print the file. It can
use the default window drivers to print. I use to do this a lot but to
tell you the truth, it has been many years since getting it.

The ghostscrpt program will download 23 basic fonts for the different
printers. If you are using word, make sure the fonts embedded in the ps
files. You can print many different files with the full accuracy of the
ps file.

Their level 1 help desk isn't much help anyway, if you're a Linux user.
The last time I called their level 1 help desk for technical support, the
conversation went something like this:

Hi Petter,

thanks for tipp! It now works.

Printer: HP Officejet 7500a driver hp-officejet_7500_e910.ppd

1. start hp-setup
2. connect via usb
3. wait(!) until system has automatically installed printers
4. disconnect usb cable
5. use the
Network/Ethernet/Wireless network (direct connection or JetDirect )
6. give ip-address
7. type wifi-password in

Printing and scanning works fine...
Other "wireless" option printer works, scanner fails...

Almost every computer that isn't fully encrypted is toast if someone has

Simple, use full disk encryption with a very good pass phrase and/or key
files.

A little more work to setup, but it is worth it, particularly if the
computer is one that travels with you out and about.

ALSA mystery

2015-10-13 Thread Charles Kroeger
I have recently had to replace my old Nvidia graphics card so I got a:

GeForce GT730

soon as I did this and a few kernel upgrades later (currently)

Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64

my sound card listed in lspci:

Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio]

(that's the driver from my Xonar D1 sound card)

was replaced with these two entries in the alsa mixer:

IEC958 and IEC958 1

these two are not muted (green speakers) and IEC958 1 is the only one that
works in
the sense it can be muted and un-muted ALSA Mixer keyboard command but there's
no
keyboard volume slider control (up down) and no volume shown in IEC958 1

here's some info:

/proc/asound/cards

 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfbdfc000 irq 16

/etc/asound.conf

pcm.!default {
 type plug
 slave.pcm {
 type hw
 HDMI 0
 device 3
 }
}

(a script I found online and modified card 0 for HDMI 0)

# service alsa-utils start
Failed to start alsa-utils.service: Unit alsa-utils.service is masked.

don't know what this means

# alsactl init
alsactl: sysfs_init:48: sysfs path '/sys' is invalid

Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Nvidia GPU 51 HDMI/DP"
"HDA:10de0051,196e1119,00100100" "0x196e" "0x1119"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

not sure about this either

# aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

The mystery:

If I open the VLC media player and select the following audio device:

HDA Nvidia HDMI 1 HDMI Audio Output

among the list of 'available' audio devices I get sound from my GeForce GT730
using an HDMI cable connected to the back of a Sony TV. (my only HDMI input
monitor) So there's sound in VLC and that's good but no sound from the Spotify
client or web browsers.

why do you think there's no volume available in the operating device (IEC958 1)
in the ALSA Mixer? Normally the keyboard command (up down keys) would raise
or lower these sliders to indicate volume. This detail might indicate why
there's
no sound in the Spotify client or web browsers, but if that's so why is there
sound
in VLC?

although I am getting sound from the Audio side of my GeForce GT730 GPU why do
you think there is incomplete utilization of the options available in the ALSA
Mixer?

The VLC player lists the contents of #aplay -L for all audio devices found,
where
in ALSA can I list this one that works, because I thought it was already listed
in /etc/asound.conf (card 0 device 3) this corresponds to the listing in
#aplay -l
(HDMI 0 device 3)

Hi,

As a general rule: If someone with malicious intent has had access to
your box it ain't yours anymore.

But there are some things you can do in order to keep all but the most

* Set a boot password, either in BIOS or (U)EFI
* Set another boot password in GRUB2
* Encrypt your disk with LUKS and yet another password

In the end it's your decision where on the line between security and

This is making a lot more sense now. So 'wowway.com' is your ISPs
server, and 'thecoughingcanary' is another customer of theirs. Likely a
compromised one. Your ISP needs to know about this.

Why did it allow the email to be relayed? Well, the credentials were
correct, that's all that was needed. (Yes, SMTP is that basic.)

You'd probably find you can send email from *any* email address you
choose, provided that the email address domain permits that server to
send emails from that domain.

(e.g. my domain has SPF records that only permit a small handful of
servers to send emails with a 'longlandclan.id.au' domain. Anyone else
will trigger a "soft-failure".)

This isn't level 1 helpdesk material, you'll actually need a technical
contact there.

My first point of call would be that 'unixadm...@wideopenwest.com' as it
now appears you're seeing the bounce traffic from another customer's
compromised host. I'd forward them a sample of the bounce traffic.

Perhaps this business has an account on the mail server and they have
a configuration problem.

They /may/ also use this ISP.

Also, a cable Internet connection shares a network segment with a
bunch of people potentially. So, perhaps, just perhaps, they are on
your segment to get the creds. More likely they are using their own
creds if the business has their own account with your ISP.

Being a "cable TV company" ... perhaps, again perhaps, they haven't

SPF is only good if the receiving server does proper checks and you
don't have a soft fail in your setup. Too many servers don't seem to
care about SPF failing, which is why back scatter is [or was] a much
greater problem that it should ever have been.

Likely, no, but still possible. For example, when I update my web
pages, I use my ISP's FTP server. Suppose someone else on my ISP's subnet
has a network sniffer in promiscuous mode. The FTP server uses ordinary
unencrypted FTP. The userid and password are sent in clear text. I wish
they had an FTPS server, but the last time I checked, they didn't. I use
e-mail solely through a web-based e-mail client. When I login, I don't
know if the password is sent in clear text over the network or not.

That being said, if my password was obtained in this manner, I don't have
much of a defense against it. If I change my password, they can get the
new one the same way as they got the old one.

Another possibility is a malicious web site that I may have unknowingly
visited that managed to find a password in memory, a cookie, etc. So
despite all the precautions that I have taken, it is still possible for
a password to be "discovered".

Having said that, it looks like someone else's credentials may have been
used, based on some other posts to this thread. But I am not an expert
in these matters. That's why I asked for help.

Just put the .deb-file with containing .ucode (I assume it should be

Then plug that usb drive to your machine after being asked to load firmware

Adobe Reader is harder to get going without winding up with an unwanted

By the looks of things it has been nicely packaged as a .msi installer.

Not by a huge margin. Better than it used to be, but still miles behind
the competition. The fact that most Linux filesystem utility packages
lack a defragmentation tool is rather telling in my opinion. About the
only one that comes to mind is xfs_fsr.

That said, we can bash Windows all we like, the fact of the matter is
that the "imposter effect" is a very real phenomenon and plenty exist in

FWIW I still use dvi for the "local part" of my workflow. Much quicker
than the bloated PDF.

When sending to someone with a "challenged" operating system (or when
doing graphical tricks which transcend what dvi was designed for), then
PDF it is, of course.

And it does behave that way. The NM/resolvconf combo ought to work fine,
and only overwrite resolv.conf because you ask it to (for example, when
switching networks). I've been running it for several years now, and the
only trouble I've had is with the interface between resolvconf and the
local bind instance I run as caching nameserver and authoritative slave
for my VPN.

It looks like the mail was delivered directly through
smtp02.wow.cmh.synacor.com by a user who successfully authenticated

@Stephen: is that you? Who runs this mail service? If this is not your
username, you might want to contact the people who run the service and
have them reset the user's password.

I had a similar case on my self-administered mail host. A friend of mine

Hej!

Se man 8 tune2fs.

filsystemet. Se man 5 fstab.

Hello,

I hava a laptop with encrytped FS, thus at boot I must enter the

caps-lock indication, so I am looking for a way to see it at this very

indication ?

The most "Debian-proper" way? I'm not really sure- I would edit the script
myself and just keep that as the local version. The only problem is that newer
versions of the package would probably overwrite it- but they may offer a
'local version of config' menu like GRUB and libpolkit do. Try it. The worst
that could happen is that you'll have to make the appropriate edits again after
an upgrade- but you'll probably be fine if you keep a backup.

Rolling your own package seems a bit overkill for what you're trying to do.

'built the iso'- what do you mean by this? I presume you meant 'wrote the iso'?

I'm not sure what you're referring to as 'the GUI'- if you're using the
netinstall CD with non-free firmware as recommended by Sven, you should have a
text-based ncurses-based interface, as opposed to the graphical installer.

Your second suggestion I think is probably what actually happened. During the
'hardware detection' phase of the installation process (where as you noted,
there are indeed no buttons), it can sometimes hang for a bit, usually for a few
seconds. It can take up to a few minutes on some machines, though. Be patient.

Sedan ett tag tillbaka initierar Linux hårdvaran
parallellt.

ecelerity is a mail platform owned by Message Systems. It attempted to
send a mail to zerrie...@aol.com which was rejected by AOL. It is now
informing you of the rejection. ecelerity does not run on your machine.

Standard ecelerity stuff. It can be seen in the headers of the two mails
you have contributed to this thread. ecelerity attempted contact with
AOL using an envelope From of .

ecelerity reckons someone from smtp02.wow.cmh.synacor.com has been
authenticated. Your mails to -user have

Looks genuine and probably is.

[Message body snipped. It is of no consequence as it plays no part in

Groet,

So what does 'standard system utilities' actually mean? What does it install? I
always install from netinstall, and prefer text-mode environments. I usually
install X and a window manager later so I don't have to deal with a login
manager. In the past, I was always unsure of what 'standard system utilities'
actually meant, but took it as a euphemism for a basic text-mode environment.
Is this the case?

What is the precise output of free?

Odds are a huge amount of what is in "use" is actually cached or in
buffers.

Furthermore, it's pretty normal for the OS to swap out memory pages
which aren't actively being changed to make room for more buffers and
cache.

The output of top or htop sorted by memory will also be informative.

Packages that developers think you will find useful to be on your system.
For a list:

  aptitude search ~pstandard

The package list is subject to alteration with each release.

Odds on it was open WiFi somewhere, people trust public WiFi ... I
cannot understand why. It is patently stupid [or ignorant at best] to
use public [or otherwise open] WiFi -- if you don't run it yourself or
you totally trust the person whom is running it, then leave it alone.

Linus had quite a fit over OpenSuSE handling of WiFi networks; it was
asking for root password to enable the WiFi (amongst other things) --
that I think is absolutely the right way to do this. Admins should
allow network access specifically, not ordinary users, let alone
Linus' daughter whom otherwise should never need to know the root
password.

Of course, using VPN for everything and I do mean everything on an
untrusted WiFi /may/ help, but you better not be running an insecure
VPN like PPTP.

Sorry, I can understand neither this nor the previous one to which you refer,
which I have only just seen. (It must have been held up somewhere.)

This CD normally Just Works.

Can you describe what you do, including any checks you do and how you burn
your CD?

Another way I have used in the past to get past a troublesome WiFi card or
too-new Ethernet card, is to install an old Ethernet card temporarily to do
the installation, sort the drivers out once it is installed, then remove the
old card.

no exista.

Tracking down memory leaks

2015-10-13 Thread Marc Shapiro
Is there a way to determine what is using up my memory? I have an 8GB
system and every few days the memory usage rises to over 7 GB and up to
a GB, or more of swap is used. Granted, I have 3 X sessions running,
along with 2 instances of Firefox and one of Chrome, not to mention up
to 3 instances of Libre Office, but... When I first added the 8 GB (I
used to do this on 2.25 GB!) I could run for months without having a
memory problem. Now it's every few days.

When this happens, I exit all programs and shut down all three X
sessions. I also log out the other two users. This leaves me with only
a single login and nothing but bash running. When I run 'free' it
usually shows over 2 GB in use! When I reboot, the memory usage is back
down at about 250 MB. Much more reasonable.

So how do I tell what is using up the memory and not freeing it up? Is
there a way to free that memory without having to reboot?

My usual first stop is top. Launch it, then press 'M' (capitalized) to
sort by memory usage; that will tell you what process(es) is(/are) using
up the largest share(s) of the RAM.

What the next steps are depends on what those processes are. In my case,
with the last significant memory leak I found, the process was X, and
further digging revealed that the X heap size was growing without limit;
it turned out to be a problem with fglrx, and went away when I switched
to the radeon drivers.

In your case, since it apparently happens without X running, the only
candidates I can think of are background (daemon-like) processes or the
kernel itself.

> Is there a way to free that memory without having to reboot?

Depends what process(es) is/are using it.

If it's a background daemon, restart that daemon.

If it's the kernel, probably not, but it would be worth reporting the
problem as a bug against the kernel.

I had tried inserting the stick (before I read your post), but did not know to
check VC4. Now when I check it, it is streaming errors continuously, each
incrementing time.

I get an error about the mirror being bad. I have tried several and it is the
same error. I think it is because I have not actually loaded iwlwifi and it is
not finding any.

So I pulled the plug on that installation to follow your direction. I get a
new error window:
GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-26

When anything is selected for installation:

error: invalid sector size 0.
error: module 'gfxmenu' isn't loaded.

I am guessing this is due to the installation formating being incomplete. At
least Windows isn't popping up.

Not sure where to go from here.

I don't think so. Just make sure you don't accidentally turn on caps lock when

-
# ~/.ssh/config
Host *
ProtocolKeepAlives 30
ProxyCommand /usr/bin/proxytunnel -p PPP.16.128.205:8080 -P
mi_usuario_proxy:mi_clave -d %h:%p -v
-

mi_usuario_proxy:mi_clave -> usuario y contraseña asignadas.

ibase=8 voulait

php|java|ruby|python|etc.).

Please use "reply to all" so you are replying to the mailing list as
well, and others could help you.

To test if Debian supports your hardware, I personally would "burn" a
live CD

and boot with it, and see if everything works fine.

You can also "burn" a live usb using that CD image. You can ask me if
you don't know how to do it.

As a rule of thumb, if your hardware is not too new, Debian should support it.

Ghostscript is one of the first solutions which occurred to me. I found a
HOWTO, but it was too complex to give to my associate to follow.

And I found an article written about ten years ago which discussed the
problem of getting high-quality output when converting Postscript; much
depends upon the fonts used (scalable versus bit-mapped). The discussion
was a bit deep, and, all things considered, it appeared to me that PDF
might be a better solution for my associate. Also, most people know how
to read a PDF document, but may have difficulty sending a Postscript
document to the virtual Ghostscript printer; I myself am not sure how it
is done in Windows.

Graphical tools for traffic analysis

Any recommendations will be well received.

That happens for conffiles which are files under /etc or are listed in
debian/conffiles in the deb archive. So that would again mean I'd have to
modify the package

It wouldn't be an overkill if there was a simple way to manage a local
repository and packages with custom modifications. I have looked around and
it didn't seem that straight-forward. Is there some helper tool perhaps?

$ aplay -D sysdefault:CARD=PCH /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Lecture WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit
Little Endian, Fréquence 48000 Hz, Mono

pouvait m'aider Merci d'avance.

Re: unlisted mirrors & non-gui installation

Yes, the last time you looked was probably Debian7. I was fully
expecting to see it on Debian8.

Previously during install, when selecting which Mirror to use, one could
press the up arrow and get a line to input a custom mirror location, such as
one kept locally. This feature seems to have been removed from Debian8
installer.

The last time I looked you go to the top of the list for this.

$ aplay -l

Analog]
   Sous-périphériques: 1/1
   Sous-périphérique #0: subdevice #0
carte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], périphérique 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
   Sous-périphériques: 1/1
   Sous-périphérique #0: subdevice #0

snd_hda_codec_hdmi 45118 1

Christophe.

I like the virus touch. It's aways good to make people sit up and take
interest. Makes everything more believable.

The three headers you quote are in the body of the email. You can put
anything you want there. Even forgeries.
