Question marks instead of apostrophes
Can anyone explain why Netscape (4.78, running on Sid) displays some pages with question marks substituted for apostrophes (and maybe for one or two other characters)? E.g. You?ll want to start by assembling three rows of planks together. Since the flooring floats ? it?s attached only to itself, not to the subfloor ? having three rows of planks assembled gives you a wide section of flooring to move around and adjust until you have everything straight. Use 1/4 shims between the planks and the wall to provide an expansion and contraction joint ? the gap will be hidden by your base molding ? and also to wedge the first sections of planking in place while you get going. In 2.2, they are allocated only if they are found; lp0 is the first port found, lp1 the second. This is more like how the rest of the kernel devices work. Parallel printer no longer found
After upgrading to the 2.2.1 kernel on a Slink system my old NEC P6 printer is no longer found at boot or in /proc/devices. Second try--can someone interpret these install boot messages?
I'll make this as short as I can. I've been having a devil of a time trying to get the Hamm install kernel to read my hd at boot. I'm using the lowmem option to install on a 4mb PS/2 model 35. (By the way, this is one of the very few PS/2's that have an AT bus, so MCA is not the problem.) Both drives I tried are able to boot into DOS and Windows and check out okay on diagnostic checks. A newsgroup post suggested compiling a kernel with the old harddisk MFM/RLL/IDE driver. I did and wrote it to the lowmem bootdisk. The boot messages say a lot more now, but I'm unable to interpret them. Can someone on the list give them a shot? Here they are: hd: controller still busy hda: reset timed out: status=0xff { Busy DriveReady WriteFault SeekComplete DataRequest CorrectedError Index Error } hda: reset timed out: error=0xff { BadSector UncorrectableError SectorIdNotFound DriveStatusError TrackZeroNotFound AddrMarkNotFound }, CHS=65535/15/255, Sector=0 The weird thing: the CHS numbers don't match either what CMOS says (under MSD in DOS) or what I pass to the kernel at the boot prompt, i.e. hd=1010,12,55. (The drive is a WD Caviar 340 MB.) This may indicate the enhanced IDE driver is needed after all, but that gives the 'timed-out', 'status=0xff', and 'Busy' messages in any case. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to put this idle machine to use. Thanks. Curt Daugaard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I like the design of the Debian menu package, and I'm trying to follow the docs to get auto-updating of menus under X, but I seem to have hit a roadblock. I use Fvwm2, and according to the comments in system.fvwm2rc and the Fvwm2 docs--in the Debian package, compliant with the menu package--FvwmButtons (formerly Good Stuff) is set up so that the user can easily override the defaults. But it looks like the menudefs.hook, autogenerated by the menu-package, is determined to invoke DebianFvwmButtons, which stubbornly overrides any configuration the user attempts. I've tried specifiying my own FvwmButtons set up, specially named and called, but the menudefs.hook always gets its way. Is there some way to override it that won't screw up future updates? Thanks.
