Visor Pilot-xfer - Not synching up regularly

2004-04-03 Thread Jon Hughes
I'm attempting to get my Handspring Visor to work with
Debian stable and I'm running into some errors that
for the life of me I can't figure out.
(somewhat lengthy post but I want to make sure I give
as much data as possible)

Some info:
Kernel: 2.4.25
Debian 3.0 (stable)
All kernel configurations according to the HOWTO at
Linuxpda.com have been completed. The USB devices work
(I can verify if via 'usbview').

My issue is strange in that the visor works once in a
while, but when it does and how and why seem to be
completly random. For example, this morning I pushed
the hotsynch button and typed in pilot-xfer -p
/dev/ttyUSB1 -l and I got a listing of the files. A
few minutes later, I repeated it and got the same
result. I then managed to do a KPilot backup, no
problem.

However, about ten minutes after that, I attempted to
synch up again and it failed. I had made no changes
whatsoever to the system. I double checked to make
sure I'd killed the Kpilot daemon in case it was
confusing things. No go. I rebooted the computer to
get to the 'clean' state that I had the first time I
tried to synch up. No go.

The system recognizes the visor as seen in 'usbview'
(shows my scanner, printer, and visor). It doesnt see
it until I press the hotsynch button and it 'creates'
the device, but I understand that's normal.

When I do a pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -l I get the
following responses:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -l

   Listening to port: /dev/ttyUSB1

Please press the HotSync button now...
   Error accepting data on /dev/ttyUSB1

Here's a confusing thing to throw in: I have attempted
this on two computers with the same kernel. I get the
same issues on both machines. That partially leads me
to think that something is up with the Visor itself,
but it HAS synched on a handful of occasions, and it
always synchs on my Windows OS, so I'm hesitant to say
that somethings up with the Visor itself.

For the record I have used /dev/ttyUSB0, /dev/pilot,
/dev/visor, etc.

I'm sort of lost as to where to go from here, thus any
advice people can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
H

Problem pinging gateway

2002-02-09 Thread Jon Hughes
I have a new system that I'm setting up Debian 2.2 on.
It's a dual boot and i have windows on the other
side which at the moment recognizes the NIC, and can
surf the net without a problem.

The linux side appears to recognize the NIC, assigns
the IP and so forth. Netstat looks right. THe problem
is I can't even ping the gateway. I'm unsure what I'm
missing (may be something simple) so I'm fishing for
ideas. (note: I'm behind a router, the other two
machines I have run debian and both are able to get
out).

ifconfig

0.0.0.0 192.168.0.0.1 0.0.0.0 YG 0 0 0 eth0

(sorry about the formating there)
This netstat -rn looks similar to the netstat -rn on
another machine.

The computer does seem to recognize the network card
on bootup, and I can ping myself. I am unable to ping
outside anything else.

Any help would be much appreciated, this is pretty
much the last step before I can get this computer into
production and it's annoying as heck:)

Thanks

in.telnetd

2001-05-16 Thread Jon Hughes
In order to allow a friend to use a program on my
machine, I wish to let her telnet in (I dislike
telnet, but she's not allowed to install SSH :( ).

Anyhow, I tried to setup the telnet damian and when I
attempt to start it by hand I get:

$/usr/sbin/in.telnetd
in.telnetd: getpeername: Socket operation on
non-socket

The lines in /etc/inetd.conf for this are:
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/in.telnetd -a
valid

And lastly, if osmeone attempts to telnet in (to let
inetd.conf start it up) the error log shows:

May 25 13:35:05 c606733-b inetd[4608]: getpwnam:

Suggestions? Thanks muchly :)

QT2.x and woody?

Re: ssh from nt?

2000-09-03 Thread Jon Hughes
I'm gonna toss in my two cents since I use this from
work:) I use a progrm called 'PenguiNet', you can
grab it from Downloads.com. It's not exactly free,
thefree version has little ads at the top, but you
ignore them after a while, but the registration is
something like only 20 bucks.

Anyhow, features I like: it can simulate linux
consoles (I can get linuxconf to appear very nicely
and other things with graphics in teh consoles),
supports the new SSH, and it'll let you open up
multiple windows inside the program (Ie, you wont have
three seperate applications for each window), very
nice at my work place.

What sort of Disk Defragmenters are there out there

DHCPCD Errors

2000-07-02 Thread Jon Hughes
I ahve downloaded and installed the DEB package for
the DHCP client, as per according to the howto. The
howto isn't very helpful as it states It should fill
all the information in automaticly.

However when I reboot I get empty IP Addreses (as if
it looked and didnt' find anything), and when i run
the dhcpcd client manually I get the following error:

I can't locate this dhcpcd-eth0.info file anywhere,
nor do I find mention of it on newsgroups/howtos.

Kernel Compile problems

2000-06-13 Thread Jon Hughes
Posting from my brother, I also gave him directions
that I used, so I'm not sure why this isn't working:)

I am attempting to upgrade P100 system from 2.0.36 to
2.2.14. These are all the steps that I have followed:

1 - gzip -cd linux-2.2.14.tar.gz | tar xfv -
2 - cd linux
3 - make mrproper (I have attempted the same process
without the make
mrproper)
4 - make menuconfig
5 - Complete configuration of Linux Kernel (483KB in
size)
6 - make dep
7 - make clean
8 - make zlilo
9 - make modules
10 - make modules_install

Reboot. The system will reboot and get part way
through the boot up
seuqence before all of a sudden displaying this error
message
repeatedly over and over at a fast speed :
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k
binfmt-464c, errno = 8
request_module[binfmt-464c]: fork failed, errono 11

At the suggestion of a friend, I've updated my
modprobe (using
modutils_2_1_121-18.deb) with no success. I've
attempted doing this
via 'make zimage' and 'make zdisk' with no success.
Am I missing
something somewhere? The steps I've followed have
been straight out of
Running Linux and my notes when I did it on another PC
successfully.

Hosts.allow confusion

2000-06-03 Thread Jon Hughes
I am attempting to let machiens from a certain domain
(mydomain.com we'll call it) telnet into my machine.
The IP Address will change each time so I know I can't
do the simple ALL: xx.xxx.xx.x method. I've looked in
hosts_access but the characters it indicates aren't
showing up correctly (in Console it says type
xxx.xxx(some character here) but that character is
different in a terminal in X).

Can anyone give me some advice on this? Thank you

kernel building errors

2000-04-24 Thread Jon Hughes
I am attempting to build kernal 2.2.12 onto a machine
that currentlyhas 2.0.36. I downloaded the proper
kernel from kernel.org and then
began the proper steps. When I get to running make
menuconfig (I don't
have KDE on this machine since my 'net connection for
downloading it is
worse than a 2400 baud modem), I recieve this error:

rm -f include/asm
( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm)
make -C scripts/lxdialog all
make[1]: Entering directory
`/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer

lxdialog.o
In file included from lxdialog.c:22:

make[1]: *** [lxdialog.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
make: *** [menuconfig] Error 2

It sorta drops out after that. I can run make config
but that's a pain
in the rear and I'd like to know why this isn't
working.

Strange Modules Error

1999-12-24 Thread Jon Hughes
I'm encountering a strange module error when i boot
up. It states that it cant' find my Network card
module (tulip.o) and therefore doesn't start my
network stuff.

But right after the computer boots p, I log on as root
in a consoel and type the following:

insmod tulip
/etc/init.d/network start

And it loads the module and starts the network (I
actually do it in a little script). My question is,
why will it find the module with a insmod, but not on
bootup?

The tulip.o module is located in four places
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.o
/usr/src/linux/modules/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/net/tulip.o

Anyhelp?:) Thanks

Disk error! ACK!

1999-11-02 Thread Jon Hughes
I ran into this problem tonight and I'm trying to be very cautious
so if anyone can give me (a semi newbie) some advice I'd appreciate it.

Here's what happened. I used CFDISK to re-designate a extra partition on
my hard drive from BeOS type (it wasn't being used at all) to Windows95 Fat
32
so that I could expand some room for my win95 (games ya know). Rebooted and
went
directly to windows, formatted, ect.

When I rebooted to Linux I received a number of errors regarding the
/dev/hda5
drive (my /usr directory) that is 2 gigs in size. The errors went something

like this:

EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,5): ext2_check_blocks_bitmap: Block #227 of the

inode table group 57 is group. (I think this is the correct error)

It recommends I run fsck manually. After altering the fstab so that /usr
wasn't
mounted right away i tried to run fsck /dev/hda5 and received a message that
stated
/dev/hda5 has illegal blocks (a number here), clear? y

I'm cautious about clearing some illegal block for fearing I'll lose data or
what not.

Can anyone fill me in on what's happening or will I lose data or what not?
I have
too much there to not be concerned :)

Thanks
Jon

offending site in the /etc/apt/sources.list, but I'm not sure if that's the
best/permanent fix. But it did work for the time being

X for Win95

1999-09-28 Thread Jon Hughes
I've been working on my Linux box here at work from my windows computer
(easier to telnet into rather then move around and stuff). This is fine and
dandy, but I've been told there is a way you can actually get the X
server/KDE stuff to work remotly, through a Xwindow on Win95 or something
like that.

Ring a bell to anyone?

Thanks
Jon

I've seen that kde.tdyc.com has the potato stuff for the latest KDE, does
anyone know if it has the stuff for slink? (Can't upgrade to

@home connection

1999-09-14 Thread Jon Hughes
Has anyone managed to get Debian connected with the @home cable modem
service? My brother is going to soon be another Debian user and he's
wondering how he will be able to connect. Technically, @home doesn't
support windows, but they are sending him the information they said should
be able to get him connected.

Any advice? Thanks
Jon

Hmm...my mistake, I meant @home doesn't support Linux. They of course
support windows :b

Sure they do. They support windows by having highly trained
support
staff who can say have you tried rebooting? Oh, then you
need to
reinstall your network card driver.

FWIW, Linux works fine with @home in some parts of the
country. In others
they do mean firewalling things which, although you can
still connect,
prevent you from doing useful linuxy things like httpd and
telnetd and so
on.

RE: SB16 pnp

1999-09-10 Thread Jon Hughes
While the others probably have more sound advice (no pun
intended) one thing I just dealt with was the devices. It said that it
would create the necessary ones (/dev/sndstat, /dev/audio, etc) but my
installation did not for some reason. Had to use the script at the end of
the readme.Linux in (I believe) /usr/src/2.0.36/drivers/sound in order to
create them. After having the support in the kernel, worked just fine

Apt Firewall variable

1999-09-02 Thread Jon Hughes
I'm reading a Debian Installation Guide to use book and it states that I
can put in a variable to let apt know that you have a firewall/proxy between
you and the outside world.

The variable (# export http_proxy=http://gateway:1234/) is to be typed into
the command line...but is there a file where I can put that into so I don't
have to type it whenever I want to apt-get something?

something?

Well, there are a couple places. If you'd like the
http_proxy
environment variable to apply to your execution of Apt
alone, then you
can rename apt-get to apt-get.real and write a wrapper
script called
apt-get.

The script would look something like this:

#!/bin/sh

##
## Apt-get wrapper script: to set environment variables
before
## executing apt-get.
## Last update: /xx/xx

# Set proxy env. var.
HTTP_PROXY=http://my.proxy:port ; export HTTP_PROXY

# Call apt-get.real and pass any parameters
/usr/bin/apt-get.real $@

## End script

If you want the environment variable to apply to your login
shell, and
therefore all programs, put the HTTP_PROXY line in your
.bash_profile. Case is important, so if the variable is
supposed to
be http_proxy, use that.

Later!

Thanks and more questions:)

1999-09-01 Thread Jon Hughes
First off, thanks to all of you who helped me with sound card and modules
and stuff. Appreciate it :-)

Secondly, does Debian have a utility that will let me repartition my drive
without data lost? I set up my paritions in a bit of a haze and have
something like

Root: 4 gigs
/usr: 5 gigs
Windows (for games, honest...) 3 gigs,
Swap...400 megs I think
And other 2.5 gigs
(I think that's right, I can't do math...)

Anyhow, after reading a few posts about making root a bit smaller for less
corruption and the like, I thought it might be nice to do that, but I don't
want to go through the work of repartitioning, formatting, installing etc.

Any advice?

Thanks again

ZIp drive problems

1999-08-27 Thread Jon Hughes

When I was moving to my new computer, I backed up all my linux data onto
a ZIP disk, since I had that working with my old computer. I figured it
wouldn't be too hard to set this up for my new computer (formatted the ZIP
disk to linux format).

Anyhow, I've compiled the Kernel 2.2.5 verision (identical to before) and
selected the options necessary for ZIP disk support (SCSI support, scsi disk
support, Iomega zip support, and printer support. Kernel compile goes fine,
lalalla.

I reboot, and then try to connect the ZIP drive. Here's the error messages
I get:

if I type mount -t ext2 /dev/sda4 /Zip I get:
The kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device (I think
that's correct...)

if i type insmod ppa (other modules load just fine or are built into the
kernel) I get:
ppa: Version 2.04 (for linux 2.2.x)
  ppa: parport reports no devices
scsi: 0 hosts
/lib/modules/2.2.5/scsi/ppa.0 init_module: Device or resource busy

I get these error messages no matter what order I toss them in, weither the
ZIP drive is conencted on boot, or what not. Being the linux newbie that I
am, I'm sort of at a lost. Can anyone help me, so I can get back to a
working os?:)

Jon

modules loading (possibly zip driver quesiton too...)

1999-08-27 Thread Jon Hughes
I just posted a question last night about some problems with a ZIP drive.
One thing I read that could be a possible solution is the module lp is
loading before ppa (at least, that's what the book says...). I haven't yet
figured out in Debian where to set up which modules load when in what
filecan anyone point me in the right direction?

RE: Riva TNT

1999-08-27 Thread Jon Hughes
I managed to get my Velocity 4400 working with the 3.3.3.1 as SVGA, so you
may want to grab that.

On the other hand, as a public service announcement, after STB was bought
out by 3DFX their customer service for that product went down the tubes.
Four email attempts and a phone call later (on which I was on hold for an
hour) I dropped that card and bought another one. But it worked fine for
basic Linux stuff.

I have a Velocity 4400 which uses the Riva TNT.

I thought this was built in the SVGA X server, but if it is,
XF86Setup
doesn't see it.

I think I have the most current XF86Setup and SVGA server
offered in stable.
They are both 3.3.2.3a-11.

Help! =(

want a new machine that will be suited for Debian (weither it comes
installed or not I'm just fine...just a bonus :b)

Switching to KDM...

1999-08-09 Thread Jon Hughes
Hi, Debian newbie asking his normal stupid question :-)

I have KDE on my computer, works just fine, etc etc. When the computer
boots up it goes straight into XDM. I can log in and kill xdm from a text
window and start up kdm, no problems there. I would, however, like to
change it so KDM starts instead of XDM. I haven't tried this in a while so
I can't recall what steps I've taken, but any advice would be much
appreciated :-)
