I am installing Debian 2.0 (hamm) from cd, but I don't see the
Enlightenment package on there... Am I just missing it, or was I
mistaken in thinking it was on there?

I've been _very_ busy...   Well, I have Adaptec Easy CD Pro which can
write ISO image files to CD, but I thought _that_ wouldn't work
either because it doesn't support the Rock Ridge Extensions (read
from a previous post to debian-users...)

So you're saying that the image files will be burned OK from an NT
box?  Excellent... I'm going to be
doing some serious Debian Installing!  :)

Forget trying to get the files themselves... It's not the burner or
software
that's the problem.  It's the OS.  WinXX doesn't support symbolic
links - of
which the Debian FTP trees are full of

Instead, get some software (Adaptec CD Creator Deluxe) that will
write ISO
images to disc and then either download the Official Debian CD Set
images
and burn them, or use mkisofs on a Linux box to create your own
images from
a local mirror.  (Then, move the image to your Winbloze box and burn
them
there.  This is what I do - seeing as (at work) I have a burner that
is
unsupported by Linux - and, for political reasons has to remain
with a
Winbloze box, anyways)

The last time I checked there was no such thing... Just curious if
there is now a program for an NT/95 machine which will correctly burn
the Debian 2.0 CD images (ISO-9660 + RRE, IIRC...).  I just got a
nice new box with some actual horsepower! (PII-300).

If so, then I'd be willing to make as many as I could...

FWIW, I went ahead and tried the loadlin deal from the DOS config.sys
multi-boot and it worked flawlessly.  I used the defaults from the
manual.txt as examples, and copied my linux kernel from my floppy boot
diskette for the boot image.  The line is:
shell=c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\linux root=/dev/hdd1 ro vga=ask

I'll try the loading from the NT boot menu directly after I Install NT5 beta
2 since I removed beta 1, as most of it doesn't work...

Now to upgrade to Debian 2.0 :)

I'm not sure if my plan will work, but hopefully I'll find out this
weekend.  Feel free to save me the trouble if someone else has
already tried this and it doesn't work...  Actually I just realized
that I may not have time this weekend... but anyway...

My first hard drive has DOS and Win98 on it.
My second drive had NT5 on it.
My third drive has the Debian.

NT must control the boot sector on the first drive, so I'm making
win98 the default startup and setting it to present menu always.
From there I can F4 or choose to boot to DOS which will prompt me
with the DOS multi-config menu where I will choose either DOS or to
run loadlin and boot linux.  With the exception of using the loadlin,
all the other parts have been done and work fine to let me into the
other 3 OS...

upgrading to hamm from pre-bo

I have one box that is still Debian 1.2, can I upgrade to hamm
directly, or should I go to bo first?  Unfortunately this is not a
test machine, so I can't afford to have it crashed.  What's the best
route for something like this?

Which brings me to another question... what do I use in dselect for
the locations of the hamm distro?  Apparently what I chose was
incorrect, and all my new packages were not found, then you can
imagine what happened to the system after it uninstalled the old
packages :(

I think I will start with just a base install of 1.3 on my box at
home... will that work with the update script on the website, or do I
need additional packages/libs/etc?

Hello :)
I've been off this list and out of the Debian loop for a while,
but I'm starting to get back into it now.  I'm getting a system set
up at the house and have just a few (hopefully quick) questions:

1) What are the best websites for info on how to do such-and-such
with Debian Linux?
2) Where do I get the Enlightenment X-Windows package that looks so
cool?
3) What do I need to use my 3Com Impact IQ ISDN TA for dialup PPP
access to my ISP?
4) How do I set up my Creative SB16 soundcard to work under Linux?

As these are pretty basic-sounding questions, a good answer to #1
may be all I need :)  I've been running Debian 1.3 for a while now,
and recently destroyed it trying to upgrade to the frozen code.  No
worries, though...  I'll just reinstall the base stuff from CD and
start over :)  Thanks in advance for any help!

Debian Security packages?

I have looked but not found many Debian packages of popular security
programs such as crack, lsof, cops, iss, satan, swatch, etc.  I did find
tripwire on the debian site, though.

Are these kept somewhere else, or do they not exist?  Just wondering if I
should go ahead an install the non-package versions I already have... I'd
rather have the packages, of course :)

We have lsof, qcrack, courtney and tripwire... all in the main distribution
I think. As far as I know we don't have the others packaged up... It'd be
great if you could package a few of them for Debian, since you're
interested in them.

Gosh, this question almost belongs in rec.mud.admin, doesn't it? :)
I run a modified Rom2.4 on a Debian box and they are similar, as you
know :)
I'm not sure if tcsh is in the base package, but I'm thinking that it is.  
Your (and my) startup files are c-shell files and if you try to run it from
a bash shell it will not work.
Try typing tcsh from the prompt and see if you get a new shell.  If 
not, then you may want to get the csh-x.x.etc.deb file from the ftp site and
run it.  I'm pretty sure you don't have to, though.  Hell, let me check...
Ok, tcsh works.  So you want to tcsh, then go to where your startup
is and type ./startup   --- the ampersand runs the mud as a background
process, which is what you want to do.
A ps- ax will show you both the startup script and the envy  
running at all times.  Once began, the startup script actually controls
the mud environment, including reboots, shutdowns, etc.
Hope this helps :)  I might drop by your mud once you get it up...

Cant get kernel-package!

when I use dselect to try and get kernel-package, i get into an infinite
loop with dependencies on packages perl and libc5.  I + them and they get *,
but when I enter, I go back to dependencies and there they are again, still
showing *!

I X'd back and tried again from start, chose ftp, looked at packages,
kernel-package was STILL selected, and I STILL got into the same boat when i
tried to continue.  Trying to purge those two packages was the bright idea I
had, but I soon realized I would have to remove most of my system once the
dependencies were ruled out :(

I'm trying again to see if I can get kernel-package and it's 3 dependencies
(the source and that other thing...) then I Q'd on the perl...

*sigh* Now it's downloading all kinds of packages I didn't ask for, cron3.0,
perl5.003, dpkg1.4, etc...

What did I screw up, and is there some way to globally reset dselect, as I
believe I have done something to really confuse it :(

Just looking at you IP address and netmask, they look wrong. 130.226.145.156
is a Class B address, and you are using a Class C Netmask.  It looks like
that is a valid ip address since it belongs to the Danish Network for
Research and Education, and you are in  .dk domain, so check with your
system admin and see if your netmask is not supposed to be 255.255.0.0.  Or
some weird subnet :)
Looks like they are using the whole thing, though, from the address of your
main router being .1 as it is below...

Actually, on Debian it´s so much nicer to install the kernel-package
package.
Then you cd to the linux source, make mrproper and make config just
once, and then you can always rebuild your kernel by running
make-kpkg binary. This´ll give you a new kernel package that contains
all you need. dpkg --install it, and so even your Debian system knows 
which kernel you´re using.

Apache 1.1.1-9

I just tried to install the aforementioned version of Apache I found in /bo,
but it does not copy a file called /etc/apache/srm.conf  Apparently this
file is important, because the server cannot start.  It tried to open it and
fopen fails, then the service start fails.

Is there a newer version than this available, or a fix, perhaps?  TIA for
any help :)

Just wondering, did you set up your /etc/resolb.conf file for the DNS 
server of your ISP.  That should solve your problems.

I had the same problem when I installed 1.2 clean.  It tells you in
the install to separate your nameservers with a comma, but you MUST NOT do
this or it will generate a broken /etc/resolv.conf  Go into your
/etc/resolve.conf and make sure you have nameserver entries like:

nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 5.6.7.8 (should you have more than one nameserver they need to be
on separate lines like this)

the install program with commas actually generates:

nameserver 1.2.3.4,5.6.7.8 
*argh* this caused me all sorts of trouble when I installed :(

PPP and /contrib

Hi folks :) 2 quick questions...

1)What is the best (easiest) way to get a PPP connection from my
debian box to my isp via a modem?  Ideally I'd like for it to be like my
Win95 box (stop throwing things!) and dial on demand when I need Internet,
and redial if disconnected.  Is this possible?
I remember years ago getting ppp with pppd, but it did not have
those features I would like, and I think it was hard to work with.  Surely
there is something better now... Thanks in advance for any info! :)

2)  The software in /contrib that is not guaranteed, just how unsafe
is it for use?  I'd really like to put on npasswd-boulder, for example, but
the warning kinda makes me wonder about what might happen (all passwords get
mailed to a newsgroup, etc..) :)  Maybe I'm just too paranoid, but I just
have to ask.

Documentation Improvements (Was:Re: DEBIAN 1.2 DISKETTE PROBLEMS UPDATE)

I agree...
Now that I am in love with my Debian box, I can tell that a LOT of
work must have gone into this, and the benefits are great.  In my case, all
that I needed to do was NOT put commas between my nameservers.  If this had
been in my install.html file, then I never would have had confusing problem
one that sparked so much traffic back and forth.
Now, I'm also wondering if I am the first person to run into this,
but I don't think so.  I think it would be easy to simply update the
install.html to tell first-timers (like myself) to NOT put the commas.
Heck, I'll change the page myself if anybody wants me to :)
I know that documentation is always the last phase of any project,
though.  I expect that it will all work out in time, especially with all the
input from users.  Hopefully I'll even be able to contribute somehow, maybe
a package or such.

Custom kernel and boot problems still...

Hmmm...
In my /etc/modules file I only have the following:
#auto
serial
lp
ne

However, each time I boot it is still going and polling for all the
nic cards and CD-ROMs, which effectively hoses my LAN.  I tried modconf and
according to it, nothing is loaded except the above.
How hard is it to compile a kernel on Debian?  I suppose I will have
to find out :)  TIA for any options or ideas!

Custom Boot Disk and Network Problems

Whenever I boot my Debian system now, it still goes through and polls for
devices I just don't have before it goes to INIT 2.  The BIG problem with
this is, for that time, my LAN is completely hammered with bad packets.  My
collision lights slam steady on, and all network activity is hosed.  This
is, needless to say, unacceptable.

I was never prompted to use the custom boot disk I was told to set aside and
use during the install process.  I'm thinking that's why my boot is still so
all-out wild and wooly.  It's still going out an looking for CDROMS,
scanners, the kitchen sink serial port, etc. :(

How do I make/use that custom boot disk and/or otherwise tune my kernel so
that I can take all the chaff out of the boot up and not hose my network.

I'm downloading packages still... I believe I screwed up when I interrupted
dselect's getting of some packages I didn't want.  Oh well.. If I have to
start from scratch again, at least I know not to use those silly commas :)

I am really in favor of this as well, if it would be possible.  The
way it is laid out now is more than a little muddy.  Right now I seem to be
getting the emacs package, which I do not want.  I was thinking the
interface of the packages would be more like above.   It is an *awful* lot
to scroll through once you get the list of packages, IMHO, and it was easy
for me to get lost.  
Mainly breaking it up a little more into categories would have let
me build the system I want better.  Like, I could go into a Utilities menu
and choose editors and then choose vi and pico, but not emacs.  Then go back
and under networking go to mail and get pine, then back up and go to news
and get tin, but not INN since I just want to read from another server, not
host news.
I know, it's easy for me to suggest all this when someone else would
have to do the work :)  But, it's just some ideas from a first-time Debian
user.  Mainly I expected the interface to make things LESS confusing instead
of MORE.  I really like the way Slackware does their install ( that's about
it) and I like being able to manipulate packages like I can in Solaris.  I
think that Debian is almost a best of both worlds system, but can still
use some work, especially in the initial setup area.  Example, why do I seem
to be getting the British ispell dictonary!!! *sigh*  Little things like that :)
I still think it's way cool all in all :)  I may re-do it from
scratch just for the experience :)

Too many packages!

Ok, so somehow I downloaded a lot of stuff I just don't want, like X, emacs,
TeX, and a host of little things like the little calculator program... I
fire up Dselect and go to remove, and then it comes back to the menu screen
with Exit highlighted.  Is this normal?

I did a dpkg --list, and I have a LOT of packages installed, apparently.  I
know that one is not to use dpkg directly to install and remove, right?  Is
there some way that I can force dselect to work for me?  I figure that way I
will not accidentally delete a package that another package depends on :)

Also, if I want I can ftp the packages that I want to a directory and then
run dselect from there, right?  I see things on the site I want, but going
through that dselect ui is harder than doing it by hand, IMHO.  I do,
however, appreciate the idea of packages (love it in Solaris!)

Ah-ha!  I darn sure did comma separate my nameservers, and a quick 
glance at my /etc/resolv.conf shows me why it's not working!  Heh heh.. I assume
that the commas not parsing OR the install telling you to do them that way is
on its way to being fixed...
As I write this, I am connected to a Debian mirror site and getting all
my packages! *cheer*  This is very cool. :)
Thanks to _everyone_ who wrote in with help and ideas about what might
be causing the troubles!  Leave it to me to start installing a new OS exactly 
when the support list decides to go down.  Do I have perfect timing or what :)
I was told that this list was VERY good for help and questions, and
that is true.  People offered to mail me the 1.1 disks and everything :)  Turns
out a comma was the culprit -- go figure!
Everything seems ok now, so this thread will retire and I'll start a new
one with my next question :)  Thanks again to all!

It may have gotten lost when the list went down last week, but I
posted about the dselect pseudo-ftp not working either.  So since I have no
ftp binary, or way to get the netstd package, I am still out of luck.
When I run dselect and attempt to connect this is what I get...

Someone from this list forwarded me this, and it is the EXACT same
thing that happens to me.  I tried it with that host, other hosts, etc.. no
good.  It bombs out just like that :(
So, until I can find some 1.1 disks, or this gets fixed my server is
still down...

Either that or make dpkg-ftp work :)  After receiving a flood of
email from people on the list I understand how it's supposed to work, why it
is that way, but not why it's not working for me.  I like the idea of having
very small of boot disks for an install.. that is one of the things that
attracted me to Debian in the first place.

 Nobody understands what the problem is because everybody upgraded from a
 previous version, so they already had all the files they needed.
 
Truely this is a fresh installation problem only. Upgrades will have no
problems with this issue.

So i discovered :)  It seems that everyone except 2 people upgraded :)

I didn't see any of this until I had already uploaded the 1997-01-06 disk
set. It DOES have dpkg-ftp on it, but not netstd (with ftp and telnet).
Something should be resolved for this by 1.2.2.

DEBIAN 1.2 DISKETTE PROBLEMS UPDATE

Okay, here is what I have learned...

The Debian 1.2 Disk release version is broken.
There is no ftp or dpkg-ftp program installed to your machine if you get all
the Disks and do a fresh install.  Basically you are screwed :(
Dselect will not work because there is no ftp.
Nobody understands what the problem is because everybody upgraded from a
previous version, so they already had all the files they needed.

I post this in order to save others in the same boat all the frustration and
headaches I have gone through in wanting to get Debian.  Many thanks to
everyone who wrote me personally and helped me figure all this out! :)

I see that there is a Debian 1.2.1 on the site now, so I am going to give it
a try.  I assume that I griped enough, then :)

If not, where can I get 1.1?  Apparently it worked from disks on a clean
install.

Also, is there another list I need to be on to get announcements about new
releases / fixes, etc?  I would not have known about 1.2.1 if I hadn't
noticed it while looking for 1.1 disks...

installed and it too is broken.  

So now the big question is, where can I get 1.1?

Yes!

This is EXACTLY what happens to me when it tries to connect to the ftp site
using dselect.  At least I know now that I'm not the only one :)  The only
difference is that it DIDN'T work once for me...

Using dselect and its ftp worked OK for one download. I tried dselect
ftp again and was unable to log on. Has anyone had this problem and been
able to correct it? I have tried purging and reinstalling dpkg-ftp and
libnet. The messages I received follow:

That *is* the specific problem.. I don't have ftp, telnet, tin,
lynx... anything BUT ping in /bin, oh and netstat :(  That's why I can't
connect to get more packages.  Am I SUPPOSED to get these on the 4 base
diskettes?  If so, then something is wrong with them, or for some ungodly
reason they just didn't install. 
So, unless there is some way for me to get packages without being
able to ftp to the site, I am stuck.  The main reason I wanted to go to
Debian is so I could do just that and not have to download a bunch of
diskettes like Slackware.  Maybe I should have downloaded 1.1?  I was under
the assumption, from the docs, that 1.2 was the current release...

That's what I was thinking.  No, didn't get it... Do I have to
download the 4 base diskettes for a third time to get it, or is there
another disk that fixes this problem.  I have installed Debian with base
diskettes from the main site and a mirror.
Path is fine, but I have no ftp in /usr/bin... or anywhere for that
matter.  I did a find / -name ftp -print and only came up with the entry in 
/usr/lib/dpkg/methods/ftp which is a dir with some files and an executable
(setup?) that tries to run dpkg with ftp, but fails...
I'm really starting to consider loading up 1.1 and NOT 1.2

This could be the result of the ARP cache in your router (or on your machine
if you are running some routed type thing...) not expiring before the other
server happened to come back up.  I can't remember how long this is, and it
_may_ be vendor specific when it comes to the hardware side.

Yes, but I've seen it quite often. The symptoms are you can't connect with
anything, rlogin, telnet or such programs; however the machine gladly replies
to ping.

I think the situation arises when an OS _has_ been running on the machine 
and then crashes or hangs; in this state the ethernet card has been assigned
an IP address, and then it just answers any ping requests that comes its way,
without any intervention of the OS.

Yeah, yeah, I know how to configure the network on many an OS, what
I am having a problem with is figuring out why I don't have the ftp program
when it supposedly comes in the base diskette series.  So, if I need this
netstd package, then how do I get it?  Can I ftp it from another machine and
stick it on a floppy?  Do I have to rawrite it or can I just ftp the .deb
file directly to the floppy?  
See where I am confused?  The documentation says nothing about how
to do all that, I should be able to connect via ftp in deselect right after
I install the base disks and kernel, but it's just not there :(
Did you have to get the netstd package, or were you able to connect
to the ftp site during the install?  Which version did you install?  Sorry
for all the questions, but I am trying to figure out what I need to do :)

Um, how am I supposed to connect to the ftp site if I don't have ftp?  Heck,
I don't have any inet capabilities except for ping!  Maybe I missed
something in the documentation, but it appears that have a pretty useless
system installed here.  Is there someplace I can look that will actually
tell me how to set Debian up?  I swear, this is really annoying.  I have
installed many complicated OS in my life, but this takes the cake :(  Does
everyone go through this crap, or did I get defective files or something? *sigh*

When I boot my machine, I get LI and a blinking cursor, and it locks up.
The machine boots fine from floppy, though.  My system is set up with
/dev/hdb1 as the / slice, booting from there.  It gave me a warning when I
did that, but I just ignored it, thinking it was nothing.  Does it HAVE to
boot from the first physical disk?  My old version of slackware didn't...

Just curious... I also just noticed there is 1.2 fixed at the Debian site,
so I am about to re-install with those images...

base diskette problems

Okay...
I have made 3 different sets of diskettes with 3 different machines
and 3 different copies of the .bin files, but I can't get past the base 1
diskette encountering an end of file at about 1.2MB.  This is *really*
starting to annoy me :(  Anybody care to share a sure-fire way to get the
base diskettes to work?
I'd appreciate it :)  TIA!
