Re: Wintel CD burner apps to create Debian CDs?
Thanks for the reply Sorry for the delay in response here, but I've been _very_ busy... Well, I have Adaptec Easy CD Pro which can write ISO image files to CD, but I thought _that_ wouldn't work either because it doesn't support the Rock Ridge Extensions (read from a previous post to debian-users...) So you're saying that the image files will be burned OK from an NT box? Excellent... I'm going to be doing some serious Debian Installing! :) Thanks! -Kendrick Forget trying to get the files themselves... It's not the burner or software that's the problem. It's the OS. WinXX doesn't support symbolic links - of which the Debian FTP trees are full of Instead, get some software (Adaptec CD Creator Deluxe) that will write ISO images to disc and then either download the Official Debian CD Set images and burn them, or use mkisofs on a Linux box to create your own images from a local mirror. (Then, move the image to your Winbloze box and burn them there. This is what I do - seeing as (at work) I have a burner that is unsupported by Linux - and, for political reasons has to remain with a Winbloze box, anyways)
Wintel CD burner apps to create Debian CDs?
The last time I checked there was no such thing... Just curious if there is now a program for an NT/95 machine which will correctly burn the Debian 2.0 CD images (ISO-9660 + RRE, IIRC...). I just got a nice new box with some actual horsepower! (PII-300). If so, then I'd be willing to make as many as I could... Follow-up: RE: Linux/WinNT dual booting (an idea...)
FWIW, I went ahead and tried the loadlin deal from the DOS config.sys multi-boot and it worked flawlessly. I used the defaults from the manual.txt as examples, and copied my linux kernel from my floppy boot diskette for the boot image. The line is: shell=c:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\linux root=/dev/hdd1 ro vga=ask I'll try the loading from the NT boot menu directly after I Install NT5 beta 2 since I removed beta 1, as most of it doesn't work... Re: Linux/WinNT dual booting (an idea...)
I'm not sure if my plan will work, but hopefully I'll find out this weekend. Feel free to save me the trouble if someone else has already tried this and it doesn't work... Actually I just realized that I may not have time this weekend... but anyway... My first hard drive has DOS and Win98 on it. My second drive had NT5 on it. My third drive has the Debian. NT must control the boot sector on the first drive, so I'm making win98 the default startup and setting it to present menu always. From there I can F4 or choose to boot to DOS which will prompt me with the DOS multi-config menu where I will choose either DOS or to run loadlin and boot linux. With the exception of using the loadlin, all the other parts have been done and work fine to let me into the other 3 OS... upgrading to hamm from pre-bo
I have one box that is still Debian 1.2, can I upgrade to hamm directly, or should I go to bo first? Unfortunately this is not a test machine, so I can't afford to have it crashed. What's the best route for something like this? Which brings me to another question... what do I use in dselect for the locations of the hamm distro? Apparently what I chose was incorrect, and all my new packages were not found, then you can imagine what happened to the system after it uninstalled the old packages :( I think I will start with just a base install of 1.3 on my box at home... will that work with the update script on the website, or do I need additional packages/libs/etc? TIA for any help as always! Regards, Kendrick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello :) I've been off this list and out of the Debian loop for a while, but I'm starting to get back into it now. I'm getting a system set up at the house and have just a few (hopefully quick) questions: 1) What are the best websites for info on how to do such-and-such with Debian Linux? 2) Where do I get the Enlightenment X-Windows package that looks so cool? 3) What do I need to use my 3Com Impact IQ ISDN TA for dialup PPP access to my ISP? 4) How do I set up my Creative SB16 soundcard to work under Linux? As these are pretty basic-sounding questions, a good answer to #1 may be all I need :) I've been running Debian 1.3 for a while now, and recently destroyed it trying to upgrade to the frozen code. Debian Security packages?
Hello :) I have looked but not found many Debian packages of popular security programs such as crack, lsof, cops, iss, satan, swatch, etc. I did find tripwire on the debian site, though. Documentation Improvements (Was:Re: DEBIAN 1.2 DISKETTE PROBLEMS UPDATE)
I agree... Now that I am in love with my Debian box, I can tell that a LOT of work must have gone into this, and the benefits are great. In my case, all that I needed to do was NOT put commas between my nameservers. If this had been in my install.html file, then I never would have had confusing problem one that sparked so much traffic back and forth. Now, I'm also wondering if I am the first person to run into this, but I don't think so. I think it would be easy to simply update the install.html to tell first-timers (like myself) to NOT put the commas. Heck, I'll change the page myself if anybody wants me to :) I know that documentation is always the last phase of any project, though. I expect that it will all work out in time, especially with all the input from users. Hopefully I'll even be able to contribute somehow, maybe a package or such. Ok, so somehow I downloaded a lot of stuff I just don't want, like X, emacs, TeX, and a host of little things like the little calculator program... I fire up Dselect and go to remove, and then it comes back to the menu screen with Exit highlighted. Is this normal? I did a dpkg --list, and I have a LOT of packages installed, apparently. I know that one is not to use dpkg directly to install and remove, right? Is there some way that I can force dselect to work for me? I figure that way I will not accidentally delete a package that another package depends on :) Also, if I want I can ftp the packages that I want to a directory and then run dselect from there, right? I see things on the site I want, but going through that dselect ui is harder than doing it by hand, IMHO. I do, however, appreciate the idea of packages (love it in Solaris!) TIA for any help! Nobody understands what the problem is because everybody upgraded from a previous version, so they already had all the files they needed. Truely this is a fresh installation problem only. Upgrades will have no problems with this issue. ### So i discovered :) It seems that everyone except 2 people upgraded :) I didn't see any of this until I had already uploaded the 1997-01-06 disk set. It DOES have dpkg-ftp on it, but not netstd (with ftp and telnet). Something should be resolved for this by 1.2.2. ## Thanks :) I hate that my server has been down for nearly 2 weeks... I can sell you a 1.1.13 gold CD if you are really interested. ## I wish I had a CD on that box :( Unfortunately I don't, otherwise I would have bought the current disk. I am diskette only at this time... Thanks for the announce list info! :) Regards, Kendrick -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . DEBIAN 1.2 DISKETTE PROBLEMS UPDATE
Okay, here is what I have learned... The Debian 1.2 Disk release version is broken. There is no ftp or dpkg-ftp program installed to your machine if you get all the Disks and do a fresh install. Basically you are screwed :( Dselect will not work because there is no ftp. Nobody understands what the problem is because everybody upgraded from a previous version, so they already had all the files they needed. I post this in order to save others in the same boat all the frustration and headaches I have gone through in wanting to get Debian. Many thanks to everyone who wrote me personally and helped me figure all this out! :) I see that there is a Debian 1.2.1 on the site now, so I am going to give it a try. I assume that I griped enough, then :) If not, where can I get 1.1? Apparently it worked from disks on a clean install. Also, is there another list I need to be on to get announcements about new releases / fixes, etc? I would not have known about 1.2.1 if I hadn't noticed it while looking for 1.1 disks... -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Nevermind 1.2.1
Well, turns out that 1.2.1 is the same as 1.2-fixed, which I have already installed and it too is broken. So now the big question is, where can I get 1.1? Re: FTP problem when using dselect (fwd)
Yes! This is EXACTLY what happens to me when it tries to connect to the ftp site using dselect. At least I know now that I'm not the only one :) The only difference is that it DIDN'T work once for me... If so, then something is wrong with them, or for some ungodly reason they just didn't install. So, unless there is some way for me to get packages without being able to ftp to the site, I am stuck. The main reason I wanted to go to Debian is so I could do just that and not have to download a bunch of diskettes like Slackware. Maybe I should have downloaded 1.1? Re: ping reply without OS (was: Re: Unidentified subject!)
This could be the result of the ARP cache in your router (or on your machine if you are running some routed type thing...) not expiring before the other server happened to come back up. I can't remember how long this is, and it _may_ be vendor specific when it comes to the hardware side. No ftp? Have I missed something?
Um, how am I supposed to connect to the ftp site if I don't have ftp? Heck, I don't have any inet capabilities except for ping! Maybe I missed something in the documentation, but it appears that have a pretty useless system installed here. Is there someplace I can look that will actually tell me how to set Debian up? I swear, this is really annoying. I have installed many complicated OS in my life, but this takes the cake :( Does everyone go through this crap, or did I get defective files or something? *sigh* -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . LI???
When I boot my machine, I get LI and a blinking cursor, and it locks up. The machine boots fine from floppy, though. My system is set up with /dev/hdb1 as the / slice, booting from there. It gave me a warning when I did that, but I just ignored it, thinking it was nothing. Does it HAVE to boot from the first physical disk? My old version of slackware didn't... Just curious... I also just noticed there is 1.2 fixed at the Debian site, so I am about to re-install with those images... base diskette problems
Okay... I have made 3 different sets of diskettes with 3 different machines and 3 different copies of the .bin files, but I can't get past the base 1 diskette encountering an end of file at about 1.2MB. This is *really* starting to annoy me :( Anybody care to share a sure-fire way to get the base diskettes to work? I'd appreciate it :) TIA! Regards Happy New Year!
