Hi all, reading Keyboard-and-Console HOWTO I learned how to bind F12 key to string emacs in console: - Something else people like to change are the bindings of the function keys. Exim 3.35 + Mysql in Debian Potato

But I'm getting these errors that are correct using allow_mx_to_ip diretive all relevant MX records point to non-existent hosts: it appears that the DNS operator for this domain has installed an invalid MX record with an IP address instead of a domain name on the right hand side But this diretive is only at 3.14. And debian woody has 3.35 source that fails to compile. What is wrong? I've tried a bunch of different configurations and CUPS was the easiest to make work. CUPS has a web-based configuration engine which listens on localhost:631, and when you configure the printer, it includes the double-sided option. I set up one printer to print normally, and another printer with a different name which prints double-sided by default. I don't know what you'd need to do to make it work under other printing systems, but you will need the PPD from hp-ppd or and equivalent. Some versions of lpr have been hacked to allow passing additional Postscript options, which lets you set double-sided printing, but I thought setting up the extra printer under CUPS was easier. Imap + Outlook 2000 problems when creating folders

Ola, estou mandando alguns emails pra lista com perolas de advocacia pra usar a Debian coletados ao longo dos anos ja que pediram ;) Um abraço, PH === Why I chose Debian GNU/Linux by Ivan E. Moore II, [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://snowcrash.tdyc.com/articles/imoore2.html === Well, Debian doesn't typically install as easily as RedHat. Also, thanks to the branding of RedHat, many don't release binaries except as rpms, so you have to use alien to convert it. After switching from RedHat - Mandrake - Debian, I should be able to help you. So far my likes are the following: 1. Debian has no direct commercial interests. 2. Debian packages tend to be of much higher quality than the crap posted on rpmfind. 3. The Debian package management facilities, though a little confusing due to the layers, are far superior to rpm. It is only now that graphical rpm clients are providing some of the functionality of apt-get. 4. The organization of the file system in Debian is superior, IMHO. RedHat, for example, added a ton of complexity to the X initialization process in the name of useability. All it did was make things harder. With Debian, it's very straightforward. 5. Several bugs I found in RedHat/Mandrake are not present in Debian. Here's what I can currently remember: 5.1 The mount command works properly wrt /etc/filesystems 5.2 Power-downs have yet to damage my filesystem under Debian. They did every single time under RedHat/Mandrake. 6. Before a package appears even in the unstable section of a Debian ftp site, it must be fairly stable. This quality assurance of the site maintainers is something you simply don't find with rpmfind. After being bitten time and time again by bad rpms, this is very, very nice. 7. Thanks to apt-get and a good internet connection, I'll probably never have to buy another Linux CD-ROM. I'll never have to install one either, except for someone else. I can just do the following: 7.1 edit /etc/apt/sources.list 7.2 apt-get update 7.3 apt-get dist-upgrade and my system will be upgraded to the next release. That's what I like so far. ;-) Downside? Beyond the above, the documentation could use some work, and the whole bloody world seems to be in love with RedHat, so there could be a M$-like lack of support for other distros in the future. Debian still uses some of the basic install tools, so often autodetection is a nice fairy tale and you must learn more about your hardware than you _ever_ wanted to know. === Speaking of packages, I think this should be raised. In general, I find that the quality of Debian packages is better than most others. Why? With most distributions, managers are forced to make a compromise - spend more time packaging very popular software, and less time packaging less popular software, or spread out the available resources for all packages. For the former, you'll end up with some very good packages, but you'll also end up with lots more that are mediocre, at best. In the latter case, you'll end up with a bunch of mediocre packages. When you pay your packagers and rely on those packagers for your distribution, you have finite resources to work with. Debian is really a community - in essence, a community of packagers. While there are only a few dozen dedicated packagers(who will package anything and everything, and things that everyone uses, like libc and such), there are hundreds of packagers who only package the program(s) they want to. The ones they use, day to day. What you end up with is a nice, even quality to the packages. The less-popular packages are still packaged by someone who uses it - they'll give just as much attention to detail with their pet package as someone who's packaging 'util-linux' or 'file-utils' would. The best of both worlds - you have a good, solid, base system of well-packaged popular software, and you have hundreds(thousands!) of other less-popular software packaged to the same standards and quality. There is also the issue of updating. A distribution maker must expend enourmous resources into making the next version of their distribution. They also must expend resources to keep their most current distribution up-to-date with the rest of the world. Let's look at Red Hat for an example. Aside from security fixes, when was the last time you were able to update to the latest GNOME desktop, using packages specifically designed for your distribution's version, from you distribuion vendor? Not very often, I can tell you. And they can't be blamed for that, either. For some things, it can be a near-full-time job for twenty or thrity packages. Considering a modern Linux

Hi all, I installed exim, wu-imapd-ssl and ipopd-ssl from woody in a Potato Debian GNU/Linux machine. All is working fine. I have a machine with 200 POP folders in Outlook that I cant get them I put them inside Imap folders. Any hints? Maybe you could use mozilla to convert the outlook mailboxes to imap mailboxes and then use the mail client you want (with imap support), for new mail. So if I have 20 folders I have to create them manually as imap folders and get folder by folder and move messages Outlook saves mail in a *strange* mbx format. :( Any hints? Qpopper, Exim and MySQL problems
Hi all, I got qpopper and exim MySQL patches to work in Debian GNU/Linux Potato 2.2 (kernel 2.2.19) on a PIII 800 Mhz and 320 Mb RAM. Exim version is 3.12 and qpopper version is 3.1.2-mysql-0.11.2. Yesterday, my machine (with many smtp and pop connectios) but memory and load low begin to fail I dont know if it is a kernel, mysql or exim problem. Any Hints? TIA,Paulo Henrique. Ola, nos da Linux Solutions usamos PostgreSQL ha quase 3 anos sem grandes problemas. O OLinux roda em PostgreSQL e outros projetos de clientes grandes que nao posso revelar tambem rodam em PostgreSQL. Uma dica use o 7.1 ou 7.2, tem muito mais recursos que o 7.0. O Potato caiu como uma luva, pois a versão de java era a necessária (não estamos utilizando o ibm-java) e a glibc é a 2.1. Entretanto DÁ pra botar essa versão 8.1.7 na glibc 2.2 (era assim que a gente tinha no suse), é só usar uma stubs libraries fornecidas pela oracle (é um procedimento previsto pela oracle) Se tu for usar ora 9 acho que vais ter que pegar o woody mesmo. Se tem alguma questão relacionada com o kernel 2.4, sei lá... não vimos nada sobre o assunto e já lemos bastante material... Mas de vez em quando surgem uns processos do oracle perdidos pelo banco, e eles começam a consumir toda CPU. Isso acontecia no suse tb, que utilizava um 2.4 mais antigo. Será ele o vilão? Aqui a gente tá fazendo as coisas na cara e na coragem, e tem dado certo... Agora, o que eu suei MESMO pra fazer foi pra recompilar os sources do php do debian com suporte a oci8, isso foi um parto. Mas agora que eu descobri como fazer tá uma brisa. Tem um roteiro para instalação do oracle no debian que um colega fez aqui faz pouco. Podemos trocar figurinhas. Strange System Hour
Hi all, I installed squirrelmail (from .tgz) in a Debian potato server and use Exim and IMAP servers. I use BRST (GMT -2) timezone in this machine. Exim is sending remote and local mail fine. All is good but when I send mail using squirrelmail the time comes at GMT time and two hours later. Lost My HD!?!?!?!
Hi everyone, I am having some problems with my root partition on my HardDisk. It is on /dev/hda2. When bootting the machine with this HD, a kernel panic occurs with the following error: ext2_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 224633558)! It started to happen without any change in the system. I have looked for help on google, but I couln't find any answer. I have already tried to run: e2fsck -b [value] /dev/hda2 where value is 8193, 16385, 32769 or 65537. It dind't work. Is this a problem with hdparm? How can I fix it? Hi all, I have two Debian Potato servers. I installed a firewall machine (real IP) and behind it instaled another machine (false IP - 10.0.0.*) with ftp service (proftpd). I redirect ftp port throught firewall and everything is working except that every ftp client have to access with passive directive. How to get ride of this? TIA,Paulo Henrique I found a solution to my problem which looks like the same: on your firewall, I opened ports 20, 21, and a few high ports (say, 5 to 50020) In proftpd.conf, I wrote this: PassivePorts 5 50020 MasqueradeAddress firewall's.external.ip.adress Now, passive and active mode are working fine for me and for the outside world. If you can burn out a flat file of the users and passwords etc you should be able to hack out awk script to set variables for then running adduser one by one relatively painlessly. Account Migration from Novell to Linux
Hi all, I have a Novell server with 6000 accounts and more than 100 Win98 clients. I want to migrate to Linux all the machines at phases. At first, I will start with 15 clients and 1 Linux server. The other 85 clients will remain Win98 accessing Novell server. I plan to make Linux mount Novell volumes and Linux clients access them by NFS and NIS. My question is how to migrate these 6000 accounts to Linux NIS? Is there a free tool for this? And a paid tool? Ola Andre, comece com a história da Debian (pegue o debian-history do debian-br), depois va para o why-debian. Coloque como figura um desktop com tema da Debian (enlightenment ou window maker). Coloque a figura dos developers da Debian. Explica a filosofia GNU e o DSFG. Enfim, da para encher rapidamente 2 ou 3 paginas. Gostaria de falar um pouco sobre a história do Debian GNU/Linux, os objetivos do projeto, a qualidade da distribuição e as principais diferenças e vantagens de utilizar Debian GNU/Linux. É claro, de forma abreviada, pois o editor disse que tem de 2 a 3 páginas reservadas para este artigo. Acho que seria uma boa chance de divulgarmos nosso projeto Debian-BR e de divulgar o uso do Debian GNU/Linux no Brasil, bem como conseguir mais possíveis colaboradores para o projeto :-) Estou aceitando indicação de documentação que possa consultar e ser usada como base para a escrita do artigo, bem como idéias adicionais do que poderíamos divulgar sobre nosso projeto.
