Monitor vs X servers
After installing Debian 2.0 on my 100MHz Pentium system and then installing Netscape 4.52, I'm getting nowhere trying to figure out if I can get a colour depth of 8 out of my current card/monitor combination. Montior is a 1990 Mitsubishi XC-1429C, with specs of: Active display 240x180 dot pitch .28 bandwidth 30 MHz Hsync 31.5 KHz Vsync 60-70 Hz Max resolution 857x643 Video card is a Diamond Stealth 1MB DRAM, and strictly from possibly impaired memory, an ISA card with S3 Trio VESA something- or-other, probably new in 1996. I'm guessing my limitations are in the monitor, but is there an X server that will work with this setup to give me more than my current color depth of 4? The only server that would work when using XF86Setup was VGA16, nothing else would produce any output. A new monitor is not in the budget right now. Any suggestions are appreciated. dists/{bo,stable} temporarily unavailable
I have to temporarily remove dists/bo and dists/stable. The problem is that dists/stable is a directory instead of a symlink, and converting a directory to a symlink will break many ftp mirror programs. The only semi-reliable way is to remove the directory, wait a while for all ftp sites to get that change, and then create it as a symlink. I'd rather cause problems now than later when I want to make stable point to hamm. If you're accessing bo through dists/stable or dists/bo, you will have to use the top level stable, non-free, and contrib symlinks. Note that those symlinks will disappear when hamm is released. No, that's apparentally standard config. It was installed straight into a linux partition. Yes, but hda5 (and above) are the equivalent of DOS extended partitions (or to be more precise, DOS logical partitions). the fact it is a linux or linux native partiton is only refering to it's system ID (0x83). this ID helps linux recognise what type of partition it is. Linux/Swap/DOS etc... Even in linux, these partition's are called logical partition's. For a better explanation, take a look at the partition mini-HOWTO, under the section What is a partition anyway? Help with Netatalk
Hello all, I am trying to get netatalk working on my small home network (just my Linux box and a Mac 6115). I have all of the requisite parts, and it seems to start OK on the linux machine but won't show up in the chooser, and the AppleTalk control panel says now AppleTalk zones available. BTW I have TCP/IP working fine between the two over ethernet, as my linux box masquerades for the mac to the Internet via a PPP connection. Help with ddd!
Hello all, I've been trying to get ddd running on my machine. I have a good install of Debian 1.3, and am quite happy with it. I have been using gdb and XEmacs, but would like to give ddd a try. However when I try to start it up I get: Warning: Name: status_form Class: XmForm Layout algorithm bailing out after 200 iterations This message repeats 20-30 times in the window I started ddd from, and then nothing! It just sits there until I hit ^C and abort it. I don't see why this should be happening, and would greatly appreciate some help! Thanks in advance. Ben Benjamin T. Hi everyone, Thanks for the suggestion to look at GNUS and the other responses. My setup is similar to what Daniel Martin? described on his web page. I had to enter several lines in the frommap to correct what the different mail programs considered to be the from address: bradshaw [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lee Bradshaw) [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lee Bradshaw) [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lee Bradshaw) freefall is my host, and mindspring.com is my isp and is set in visible name. I'm still having a problem with local mail though. I can send mail to a username without problems, but replying to this mail generates an invalid address. For example, in elm a reply to a local message From: bradshaw, would be addressed To: [EMAIL PROTECTED](none). I could qualify all from addresses even in the local transport so that replies would be forced through the isp, but I'd rather keep the mail local. I saw a suggestion to use someething like @home.net for local users. The MUA's I've seen try to qualify the username and that dummy address might be the thing to use. Please send your suggestions, or I'll post if I get things improved a little more. As far as I can deduce from the directory structure at Debian, you CAN get new packages from the original release - minus all the updates - by taking them from the 'rex' directory. Unfortunately limited space on CDs required that obsolete packages be erased from rex. rex contains a subset of the packages in 1.2.0. (ie - no packages are added). So if you installed 1.2.0 you can still add new packages from there without upgrade incompatibilities. rex-fixed, aka, stable is nothing more than a tree of symlinks to everything in rex plus everything in rex-updates.
