I hear historic dog Biff still barking. As Lee reported, it just worked, with no need to specify XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. I suspect that my ~/.config/pulse/default.pa is not really needed, but by installing it I cleaned up the default pulse mess left over by previous operating system installations (My user space ~rprice has been running since Sept 1994). To my surprise, when cron calls the Bash script bark.sh, command "pactl list short sinks" reports Connection failure: Connection refused and command "pacmd list-sinks" also reports: No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon. but if Biff barks, I won't worry. In this case, my guess would be that there's a session being set up when you log in which puts in place the necessary configuration, access permissions, or the like to make it possible for play to do what you need it to do - but for a command invoked from the crontab, no such session has been set up (or whatever session is set up doesn't supply the same configuration), so play can't produce any audible output. Another thing I don't do is run systemd, so I'm not in a position to even figure out what you'd do to verify that, never mind test possibilities for myself. Debian 9 cron = sounds are ok : Debian 11 cron no sound
People occasionally have a cron job emit some sound each hour. On my Debian 9 machine I hear Biff [1] barking. In /etc/crontab I have an entry to call a script bark.sh which does the barking. Typically 0,1 0,12 * * * rprice full-path-to/bark.sh 12 2>>&1 where bark.sh is a Bash script which calls /usr/bin/play to play a .au file. This ran for years with Debian 9. I upgrade to Debian 11 and hear nothing. The usual advice is (a) in /etc/crontab export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 (b) play the sound from a script. But that doesn't work with Debian 11. Does any reader of this list have sound coming from a Debian 11 cron job? If so, how is it done? Roger [1] Unix folklore. Disable knotify sounds using xfce
Hello all, I use Xfce, but I also like having a few KDE apps installed (namely, k3b, konquest and a few others, but the problem here pertains to knotify in general). I haven't the full KDE desktop and I don't want it. I'm on a up-to-date stretch/sid amd64. When playing konquest, for example, each time a dialog pops up, knotify plays a sound regardless of my sound volume settings (worse, it raises the sound volume). There used to be a systemsettings command I could run from terminal to adjust those KDE settings, but now the command is systemsettings5 and the window it shows does not include icons to manage sound settings anymore. It only contains three icons: shortcuts under Workspace section and Settings + Connectivity under Network section. Needless to say, they aren't what I need. How do I tell KDE apps to avoid playing sounds on notifications?

Re: Kaffeine and Amarok don't play any sounds and crash
Not sure if it is related, but I rebuilt my machine with Debian amd64 (sid) last weekend, and just installed Amarok last night. I noticed that it seemed like every 3 or 4 songs, it would crash with a signal 11. I'm going to dig into it tomorrow, but hearing that you are havning issues with it and (presumably) with Pulse may push me into nuking it off of the system. 2012/1/14 Grześ Andruszkiewicz > Hi, > > I am running (up to date) Debian Testing and recently I have issues > with Amarok, Kaffeine and all Xine based players - they fail to play > any sound. Kaffeine and Amarok don't play any sounds and crash
Hi, I am running (up to date) Debian Testing and recently I have issues with Amarok, Kaffeine and all Xine based players - they fail to play any sound. I found in /var/log/messages: Jan 14 14:53:52 grzes pulseaudio[1105]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to open cookie file '/etc/timidity/.pulse-cookie': No such file or directory Jan 14 14:53:52 grzes pulseaudio[1105]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to load authorization key '/etc/timidity/.pulse-cookie': No such file or directory Jan 14 14:53:52 grzes pulseaudio[1105]: [autospawn] lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock. How to let Alsa actually mix the PC speaker beep with other sounds?
Hello, I recently switched to playing music directly on my notebook instead of another computer somewhere else. This notebook runs Debian Testing with Xfce 4.8 and a self-compiled kernel 3.0. I can set the volume level of the system beep (which occurs, for example, if you open a terminal and press backspace) using alsamixer, as I have a control called ‘Beep’ there. If I set a volume level unequal zero and unmute that control, it will play a high-pitched, acceptable sound every time I press backspace. Disabling the control will play a lower-frequency, louder sound. I like both sounds and don’t mind which of them plays. However, I _do_ mind having no beep at all. My problem: Whenever any of the two sounds play, any other sound output is temporarily paused. I know that Alsa can do mixing quite well, as I can play multiple sound files at the same times (using mplayer, vlc, aplayer etc.) – but somehow it doesn’t want to mix that beep into the other sounds it outputs. Any ideas what I could do to improve this situation? Since I've installed esound, no more sound from music, videos, etc., but I can now hear system's sounds!
Hi, Some days ago, I figured out (thanks to the ML) how to hear systems' sounds. I had to install esound, and I was using OSS. Now, System > Preferences > Sounds > Sounds tab plays correctly the sounds, but I can't hear any other type of sound (i.e. from music played with totem, VLC, videos on Youtube, etc.). The `Devices' tab gives, for, `Default Mixer Tracks,' `ALSA' as a default. I changed it to OSS, and still no sound from videos (even after GNOME session restart). Should I deinstall esound? What can I do to hear music again? I checked the volume control panel, and everything is okay (no `mute', etc., and volumes are sufficiently high). Lenny Skype - suddenly garbled mic sounds
Posted on skype board with no replies to date. Perhaps one of you can shed some insight. Skype worked fine for about 6 weeks since I first installed it. But from this last weekend, I get this darth vader mic sound problem. My voice is garbled and s-l-o-w-e-d down on playback from skype test call. Voice calls unusable. Skype call dialog window Error message something like "problem with audio capture." I hear the other end; other party hears nothing. No audio s/w updated nor installed recently. Mic on sound recorder still works fine. Debian Lenny (current updates), Skype Linux 2.1.0.81, backported 2.6.32 kernel, default XFCE debian installation for audio. So, everything was fine previously. Nothing new installed. No upgrades should impact audio. Packages updated recently: [UPGRADE] ghostscript 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny1 -> 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny4 [UPGRADE] gs-common 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny1 -> 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny4 [UPGRADE] libgs8 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny1 -> 8.62.dfsg.1-3.2lenny4 [UPGRADE] libldap-2.4-2 2.4.11-1+lenny1 -> 2.4.11-1+lenny2 [UPGRADE] google-chrome-stable 5.0.375.99-r51029 -> 5.0.375.125-r53311 [UPGRADE] libmozjs1d 1.9.0.19-2 -> 1.9.0.19-3 [UPGRADE] xulrunner-1.9 1.9.0.19-2 -> 1.9.0.19-3 Any ideas before I tinker with adding .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf files? Under Lenny, The ESD starts when GNOME starts, and the ESD terminates when GNOME terminates; so now that I think about it I shouldn't be surprised that there is no startup script for it in /etc/init.d/. But the fact that, under Squeeze, the ESD no longer starts when GNOME starts, even though the esound package is installed, leads me to believe that something *is* finally changing. From the circumstantial evidence, it appears that GNOME is now relying on sound mixing in ALSA (hardware or software, depending on the capabilities of the audio chipset) rather than a network-transparent audio daemon to mix sounds from multiple applications. That is a major transition, and bugs are likely. The suppression of startup and shutdown sounds is apparently a circumvention for a bug. The other possibility is that GNOME has switched to a different network transparent audio daemon, such as pulseaudio. And since I don't have pulseaudio installed, I'm not getting startup and shutdown sounds. But that appears unlikely. Why would they handle some system sounds (startup and shutdown) through an audio server, while sending other system sounds, such as alert, directly to ALSA? At this point, I'm assuming that the lack of startup and shutdown sounds is a known bug which will eventually be fixed. If someone more knowledgeable out there wishes to correct me, I'm all ears. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: Re: No GNOME system sounds in Squeeze
FYI, this is a copy of the "README" that comes with Esound in Etch, it's date on my computer is june 2005 : Esound is an audio mixing server that allows multiple applications to output sound to the same audio device. Development on Esound stopped several years ago, in the hope that someone would write a replacement. Esound is seriously lacking in features required for a modern desktop environment, particularly for multi-channel audio and audio/video synchronization. However, it is part of the GNOME platform (for a little while longer), so we slavishly continue to maintain it. Bugs should be reported at http://bugzilla.gnome.org. It's unlikely that they'll be fixed unless they're regressions from recent versions or accompanied by patches. --ds Something should change, but --Jasper. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". I've de-installed gnome-audio and installed freedesktop-sound-theme and gnome-session-canberra. I now have at least "alert" sounds working. Startup and shutdown sounds still don't work. The ESD still isn't running either. And I don't have pulseaudio installed. I wonder if GNOME now directs system sounds directly to ALSA. And I wonder if ALSA finally enables software sound mixing (again) by default on audio chipsets that don't support hardware sound mixing. Wouldn't that be nice! No GNOME system sounds in Squeeze
OK, now it's my turn to ask for help. I've finally gotten around to trying to enable system sounds in GNOME under Squeeze, and I can't seem to get it to work. I've been able to get it to work under Lenny (see my web page http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/tp600.htm for example), but under Squeeze it doesn't work. Basic sound works. (In other words, the "aplay" utility can be used to play .wav files just fine.) But the Squeeze version of GNOME (2.28.2) appears to be quite different from the Lenny version of GNOME (2.22.3) with respect to sound configuration. When I click on System -> Preferences -> Sound, I see something quite different than what I see in 2.22.3. I see a mixer-like window right off the bat, and there are no "test" buttons. When I click on the "Sound Theme" tab, everything is grayed-out. I can't select anything. Also, the Enlightened Sound Daemon is apparently not running, according to "ps aux", even though I have the esound, esound-clients, and esound-common packages installed. Nor does there appear to be any startup script in /etc/init.d/ that would start it. The gnome-audio package is also installed. And yes, I rebooted after installing those packages. I searched the built-in gnome help, but to no avail. I searched wiki.debian.org, but to no avail. I searched the internet, but found nothing promising on the first few pages. Surely there's someone out there who has gotten GNOME system sounds working under Squeeze. Any ideas? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Gnome System Sounds (again)
Hey there, I am on SID and have the same problem with both my machines. Sound works fine in general, only the gnome system sounds don't. I can't enable them in system -> preferences -> sound because all the checkboxes are greyed out and unclickable. gnome-audio and ESD is installed. I read on some forums to try pulseaudio instead, so I did, and the pulseaudio sound server was running, I was able to play sounds through it, but the gnome-system-sound situation did not change at all. I appreciate any suggestions :) Thanks you guys! -- Cheers, Max GNU/Linux - User #477672 PGP: 0x6C29B594 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Simultaneous sounds, again (solved, probably)
I am pleased to say that I now managed to get simultaneous sound working in Debian, almost perfectly. My "sound compatibility matrix" is now: mp/s xmmsyoutube skype mp/s OKOK OKOK xmms OKXOKOK youtubeOKOK OKOK skype OKOK OKN/A mp/s means mplayer with sdl audio output, as before. I had to set this *both* by a line in ~/.mplayer/config: ao=sdl and through the GUI (gmplayer, preferences, audio). It appears both are necessary. The X in the combination xmms-xmms should probably be N/A, because xmms just does not allow running 2 instances of itself simultaneously. Several reactions (on-list and off-list) suggested using a sound daemon, but according to the 31 August 2007 entry on the "buglandia" blog (http://buglandia.blogspot.com), sound daemons (like esd and arts) are now *outdated*, and even somewhat *evil* ("fundamentally wrong"). The solution is software sound mixing. Apparently, sounds can be mixed by the hardware (the sound card) or by software. Windows always uses software sound mixing by default. So sound mixing always works on Windows, no matter what hardware you have. Linux, developed by and for tech types, tries to use hardware mixing if the sound card can support it (but by no means all of them do), because this is more efficient. Software mixing became something of a stepchild. But it appears that in the more modern versions (of Linux and alsa; certainly in Sid) software mixing works now. The flightgear wiki (http://tinyurl.com/38smlf) explains this better than I can. To make it work, I followed a recipe on the alsa wiki (http://tinyurl.com/2vhoqt), because the recipe on buglandia did not work for me. What did was: -- make sure there is NO /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc files present on the system. -- export two environment variables: export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa export AUDIODEV=plug:dmix (you can put both commands in ~/.bash_profile). -- make sure that mplayer uses sdl for audio output. -- make sure there are no sound daemons running (jack, esd, arts, whatever). It will now work after you log out/log in, and perhaps after restarting alsa (/etc/init.d/alsasound restart). Well, I hope it does. It now does for me. how to get k3b back in testing (yes, this sounds familiar)
Hi, So, while Testing is going through this whole lot of transition to newer packages (KDE 3.4 and Gcc 4.0), I am holding off dist-upgrading it. But yesterday, to experiment to see what happens to held back packages if k3b is not present, I removed k3b. Saw nothing much has changed so did not upgrade at all. So, to get k3b back, what do I do? I know it is not there anymore in Testing. Where can I find it's last deb package for Testing? ->HS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Gnome desktop sounds not playing, all other sound works fine
All sound works fine on my sarge desktop -- realplayer, music player etc. The only exception is the Gnome desktop sounds -- login, logout, error etc. These do not play at all, even when 'play' is selected for the various wav files indicated in gnome-sound-properties (all of which exist, and can be played from other apps.) KDE desktop sounds work fine (I am considering a move to KDE, but I've not yet gotten all my apps working properly there, so different topic.) I've tried manually editing $HOME/.gnome2/sound/events/gnome-2.soundlist. gnome-sound-properties picks up the changes, but the sounds still don't play. Thanks in advance for any info... ___ Yahoo! 2 sounds cards in GNOME
Hi all, I have succesfully installed 2 sound cards on my PC. The problem is that I do not know how to tell gnome to use the one I want. In fact the desktop sounds effects are played in one sound card but the sounds from gnome applications sound are played in the other one. How can I configure gnome in order the sounds were played in the sound card I want? Apparently, _David Roguin_, on 23/06/05 09:47,typed: > i have the same deal, i believe the GStreamer is still buggy. > maybe has something to be with lack of RAM? The desktop I mentioned earlier running Sarge has 256MB and the laptop I had mentioned earlier has 512MB. With the sound distortion the same in both, looks like RAM may not be the problem. ->HS -- Please remove the underscores ( the '_' symbols) from my email address to obtain the correct one.
