fixed fonts in release-notes

2016-02-21 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi all,

now that the fonts in the release-notes are fixed - yeah! - there are
several bugs on that, most of which can be closed.

Package: texlive-xetex - can not be closed!
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=787759

Package: release-notes, blocked by 787759
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=789356

Package: release-notes
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=799383

The first of this bugs is against the texlive software itself, which
is still unsolved ATM, so it cannot be closed.
The second and third are blocked by the first one, which is why I would
propose to unblock them and close them.
The last three can simply be closed too.

On the other hand: Should one of those bugs be kept open as a reminder to
undo today's font changes, when texlive itself is fixed one day?

On lists.debian.org there is a link to the complete index, that's enough
IMO. We cannot make direct links from everywhere to everywhere.

Furthermore: not everyone is most probably happy with the complete index
list, there might be people, especially newcomers, who prefer a listing
sorted by categories or the like, instead of being overrun by a list with
269 entries.

Link to Debian on http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-lang-priorities

2016-03-30 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi Richard,

on your page http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-lang-priorities
there is a link to our Debian webpage "http://www.debian.org/intro/cn#mozilla;.

We have changed the relevant page, amongst other changes: sort browsers
alphabetically; see https://www.debian.org/intro/cn.en.html.
That means Mozilla is no longer at the top of the page.
Which is why I suggest you to change the link onto
https://www.debian.org/intro/cn#setting.

Best regards

Hi Osamu,

Most links work again, now. Good work! Many thanks!!

With the exception of the english text variants, they are still 404:

So re-opening the bug.

Seems fine now!
Manual for stable is the correct one, and the one for stretch is not yet
published on the website (except the development versions on
https://d-i.debian.org/manual/ which correctly document stretch).

So this is done for now, many thanks, Laura!

Since you propagate for keeping entries for old Firefox and Netscape
browsers, there is also no point in removing Galeon. So I left Galeon as is.

That's not the way how it works.
You don't need a sources.list entry specific for a special package,
you need one for a Debian release, like Jessie.

Under https://www.debian.org/mirror/ at the top you will find:

"If you don't know which mirror to use or your system moves around a lot,
you can use the mirror redirector service in your apt sources.list.
...
Use this address in your sources.list to use the mirror redirector:
http://httpredir.debian.org/debian "

See http://httpredir.debian.org/

So you can use a sources.list entry like

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main

for Debian Jessie.

While I think about, if recruting new people to the team wouldn't make

Hmm, this statement is correct for localized pages, yes. But not for
english. The english pages are all fine, newcomer tag is there everywhere.
I did not saw that yesterday.

So this boils down (again) to the (old) problem, that localized pages are
not rebuild, if only the value of a tag has changed.
See

I am not sure, since that Makefile seems to work fine for English.

Maybe it is more the Makefiles in the directories of other languages, to
look into...

Hmm, somehow I had the view, that some sort of "complete rebuild" can only

I have looked into applying this.

And a question came up: how did you manage to propose a git diff?
As far as I know, the webwml is still on cvs ...
Or did I miss something?

Nevertheless, I patched this to get the resulting wml files, and I have
implemented the corrections suggested by victory here:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2016/06/msg00086.html

Additionally there were some wrong codenames in the index.wml in the patch,
which means the index.wml currently in CVS is correct and needs no change.

The resulting cvs diff is attached.

debian-www people:
Any objections against me committing this?

Let's see if all builds fine tomorrow, fingers crossed :-)

I cooked a patch, to deal with all the suggestions made here:

- move ia64, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, s390 and sparc to the "unofficial
  ports" section
- set ia64 from "released" to "discontinued" and added a sentence to document

You are right, strictly spoken.
But there are several "old and removed" ports in the "unofficial ports" section,
like alpha or arm or hppa.
To solve this, we would need to create a third section like "Old/Removed ports",
or the like.

Ok, understood.
To deal with this, I propose to change
"List of unofficial ports" into "List of unofficial/old ports".

I have attached a new diff and the new resulting html file.
Again the changings as an overview:

- "List of unofficial ports" -> "List of unofficial/old ports"
- move ia64, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, s390 and sparc to the
"unofficial/old
  ports" section
- set ia64 from "released" to "discontinued" and added a sentence to document
  this change.
- kfreebsd-amd64: added a sentence to document the current, non-official status
- kfreebsd-i386: added a sentence to document the current, non-official status
- set m68k from "discontinued/being revived" to "in progress"
- set s390 from "released" to "replaced by s390x" and added a sentence to
  document this change.
- set sparc from "released" to "replaced by sparc64" and added a sentence to
  document this change.
- sh: changed port name from "sh" to "sh4". And added a sentence to mention
  the J-Core processor.

See

https://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/debian-installer/ for 7.11

or basically https://www.debian.org/releases/

They currently link to
https://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/synaptic.html

while omitting the ".html" at the end would just work:
https://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/synaptic

Adding such ".html" to the link provided by Paul makes that link
fail too.

So one might argue that could also be an webserver config issue or
something like that on our site?

There is some room for improvement with the current debian-installer page for
Stretch: https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch/debian-installer/
contains the chapter for Stretch (stable) images
("To install Debian (stretch), download any of the following images "),
Documentation and Errata, all for Stretch, but they are not relevant at the
moment, of course.

Should we set that parts to
 ?
In the past, that respective chapter was just added when the new stable
release happened, so that was not needed in the past, but I think it would
be a fine improvement now.

Additionally, I would add a small sentence on how to install Stretch now
(basically a link to ../devel/debian-installer), which would be

A proposal patch is attached, and also two html files, how the page would
look like now (during Stable=Jessie) and after the next release (when
Stable=Stretch).

Re: New vendor

2017-02-09 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

Alexandre reminded you to add the needed legal information.

In detail: I cannot find info, for which architecture you are selling media.
"32bit" and "64bit" is no architecture naming, we have 32bit for x86 and arm,
for example, and also 64bit for x86 and arm.
So, "32bit" and "64bit" is no explicit architecture name!

So, add the labels "x86" and "x64" or similar to your webshop, to be
conform with the Debian rules for CD vendors, according to
https://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/info. Otherwise I have to remove the
entry again.

I have added your entry, should be visible in a few hours.

Ahh, maybe I was not clear enough:
even without applying the patch from #835610, I could not find out how
the generating of that website would work. So I saw no way to build it

For the second sentence, maybe better use something like:

For older archived CD releases you will probably have to use the
md5sum tool, since only MD5 checksums might have been
generated for that releases.

Norwegian handbook is not available via the new link.
I assume the website uses the Jessie version of the handbook, where
Norwegian Bokmål is not included?
(I could not find anything in the code, if unstable or stable version
is used, though.)

Hmm, this looks like debian-handbook from stable, however the debian package
from jessie does not contain nb-NO.
So I don't know what's this version ???

Nevertheless, it looks as if we cannot have nb-NO for debian-handbook on
the debian doc webpage for jessie, so I will revert my commit for now.
Probably you should file a bugreport as a reminder, that nb-NO can be added,
when Stretch is out.

Howto about: Setting up ssh so it doesn't ask you for a password.

2016-12-17 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

I had problems with setting up ssh, so that it uses ssh-agent.
I followed https://www.debian.org/devel/passwordleh but I failed.
The problem was, I simply used "ssh-add" as in the example at the bottom.
But my ssh key is ~/.ssh/id_alioth, and that way ssh-add without any
arguments does not find it. Why I named my key file like this? I followed
an howto somewhere here on d.o or on Alioth, I don't remember exactly.
Because of this, there is chance that more people stumble over this like me.

So I suggest this change:

- ssh-add
+ ssh-add

Comments?

This is due to the Makefile being developed for the addition of DLAs, but
there are no DLAs in 2017 directory.
I have reverted the Makefile back to the old variant before DLAs came up.
This fixes the website build (for now).
As long as DLAs are added to 2017, the today's commit has to be reverted.
Maybe the Makefile should be changed, so that it covers both situations?

New Debian Partners pages

2017-03-25 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

I noticed some dead links on the new partners pages:

the subpages for 2015, 2016 and 2017
https://www.debian.org/partners/2015/index.en.html
https://www.debian.org/partners/2016/index.en.html
https://www.debian.org/partners/2017/index.en.html

have a chapter
"201x Partners Program conditions"
which contains a link to non-existent subpages:
https://www.debian.org/english/partners/2015/partners
https://www.debian.org/english/partners/2016/partners
https://www.debian.org/english/partners/2017/partners

Maybe this is work in progress and the subpages are added later on?

I didn't check how it was for Squeeze, only checked Jessie. And there it
was also set "current_initial_release = 8".
Which seems correct since the versioning scheme was changed some day from
"x.0" to "x".
So the webpage code mentioned here might no longer work correctly now.

The "current_initial_release" entity is only used in that ../releases/index
file, to display the mentioned phrases.
So changing it from "9" to "9.0" should be safe.

This is not an error (at the moment).

You are trying to access the release-notes for Debian 10 'Buster'
which are currently not generated, since the release of Debian 10
is far far away.

If you wanted to read the release-notes for Debian 9 Stretch, which was
released 10 days ago, use
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes

Release info is not really correct

2017-06-27 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi all,

I noticed that release information at
https://www.debian.org/releases/index.en.html
has some glitch:

Quote:

"The current "stable" distribution of Debian is version 9, codenamed stretch.
It was initially released as version 9 on June 17th, 2017 and its latest
update,
version 9.0, was released on June 17th, 2017. "

The logic for above paragraph is not working correctly, when the current
release is 9.0 (say no point release has happen).
Today with 9.0 being the actual release version, it should display:

"The current "stable" distribution of Debian is version 9, codenamed stretch.
It was released on June 17th, 2017. "

It seems that the implemented logic has never worked correctly (for the time
between x.0 and x.1 release).
I have attached a patch which would work.

Another approach would need one more entity which is probably not wanted,
since it makes the whole thing more and more complicated (entity-wise).

I can commit my proposal myself, if you want...

I had some problems with git handling, and thus I missed some more needed

Please find a corrected patch here.

I have played around a bit with pdf support for Debian Reference, and it
seems as if the involved tools have been improved significantly in the last
years, since I managed to get valid pdfs built for all languages without
big changings (except Portuguese, but that fails when building html variant
too, because of syntax errors in po files.

Tables are now integrated (Osamu wrote, there is some problems with tables,
but I cannot see any such problems now).

So, it looks to me, as adding pdf support could be possible :-)

Osamu, I have prepared a patch for this, could you take a look?
(The only required changes were the selection of fonts for the different
languages, the rest worked out of the box.)

Best Regards
Holger

Friendly ping :-)

This bug is still true, even for the new version of debian-handbook in
stable (stretch):

and
'https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-handbook/sect.dist-upgrade.de.html#idm139675552654432'
and
'https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-handbook/sect.dist-upgrade.de.html#idm139675552632176'
are still dead links, while they work, when you replace "de" by "it" for
example.

Could you take a look? Thanks

Now that Stretch is out, I have added Norwegian and Vietnamese.

The commit message says:
"Add UTF-8 charset for all .txt files on ftp.d.o"

This is not strictly true for the old dedication files (2.2 release).
They are not utf8, but old legacy encoding like ISO-8859-15 for German.
So those old files don't work anymore (at least here with Firefox). But
the new ones (5.0 and 9.0 releases) work fine now, yeah!
Probably the old files should be switched to utf8 encoding...

This seems to be a problem with some webbrowsers:
Firefox and derivatives assume the wrong character encoding for the file,
when I select UTF8 by hand, everything displays fine.
With Chromium all is fine out of the box.

So, maybe we can add encoding specification to the files, to make that
working more stable?

I will change that in the webwml for all announcement translations, that
have the dedication translated for their language.

I am not a dblatex crack, so my workflow was, to mostly copy the code from
other project (installation-guide).
The reason for the used fonts in installation-guide is probably historical
ones, nothing really intended.
If you have reasons to use other fonts, and you manage that to build, please
do. No objection from my side, of course :-)
With my font choice I got it to build successful, that was my main point.

This is likely to gain no success, because xmlroff has been orphaned.
So no maintainer :-(

Since the problem is with pdf variants for Squeeze (!), disabling the
pdf variants for those release-notes would be a way to work around this
problem? Squeeze is old for ages, so missing pdfs should be no problem there.

(PS: Is this really correct, that release-notes are still build for those old
releases on-the-fly? I would have thought that those documents are extracted
from the relevant existing packages, here: release-notes in squeeze.
Maybe I am missing something ... )

Proposed changing for releases pages

2017-09-23 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi Laura and debian-www,

recently you performed some changings regarding checksum files on several
releases pages like:

--- index.wml 2017/05/13 08:33:34 1.6
+++ index.wml   2017/09/19 13:35:57 1.7

+ For the netinst CD images, verification files (SHA256SUMS,

The above is for english/releases/jessie/debian-installer/index.wml, but
it's the same for wheezy, stretch, squeeze, etch, lenny and buster.

It talks only about netinst CD images, but this not completely true:
there are checksum files for CD or DVD images too.

And in times of iso hybrid images, CD images cannot be used for CDs only,
but also for USB sticks, as an example.

Long story short:
I would suggest to change this into

"For the installation images there are verification files (SHA256SUMS,
SHA512SUMS and other) available from the same directory as the
images."

The same also counts for devel/debian-installer/index.

What do you think? Do you want me to commit this?

But apparently that does not trigger a rebuild of the pages, sadly ...

Please note, that this is a longstanding issue.

I remembered there was a bugreport on this, but I couldn't find it.
Then I found it, it has been closed in August 2017. It's here:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=569136

So, this has been closed in error.
Thus, I'm reopening it.

Simon Paillard stated there, that the complicated Makefiles for Chinese
are the point ...

You are right.
We (installer team) already noticed this and are working
on it.

We had the same situation in 2016 with jessie/stretch manual.
I have already adapted the lessoften cron script in
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/cron/commit/f02a61c6d43c3b2f141ad64a837c33fbd0f56fb8

Today I found the relevant mailinglist entries, here:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2016/03/msg00200.html
where I read that some more action is needed.

Laura: could you help us again with this?
In above mailinglist entry you have posted the commands needed back
in 2016...

Many thanks!
Holger

Similar solutions have already been proposed, but sadly noone implemented
some.

For me, that sounds like a very good way.
