Hi Mirek, I and Jay agreed that the icons look much clearer without the candy-ish fill, especially the T and the omega. Currently, the icons bold, italic and underlined in master use the Gnome 2.20 style, with a rather flat gradient and highlights. Here's a SVG comparing the different versions: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12598822/bold%20icon.svg I didn't attend the last two hangouts, so we didn't make a decision regarding the text icon style, but I could attend next week. Regarding the icon size, is it really that bad if a few icons make use of the 1 px margin? E.g. the text lines in the bullets and numbering icons look too slim if one leaves the margin untouched. Since we want to get rid of tango-testing and remove it after rescuing all icons good enough for tango, I don't think it's a good idea to add another theme. Hi Mirek, agree that the duplication of functionality is rather confusing.Did you mean that the individual panes would appear as a pop-up like e.g. the Insert table button already does? [libreoffice-design] Better AppData screenshots
Hi, It's been a while since my last mail to this list, and I have to say that the improvements to the start center and the new icon set are impressive. Maybe you know about AppData ( http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/appdata/), a new format that allows to present applications in software centers like Gnome Software or KDE's Apper in a rather slick way. Is there a group of shape icons anybody would like to work on? For consistency reasons, it would be good if the SVGs were all created the same way. I use the pngs/svgs from other icon sets as stencil, draw a single shape and apply the gradient fill that all shape icons have. Then I duplicate the shape three times, move one copy aside and resize another one to be 1px smaller than the original. Then I create the boolean difference between both shapes that weren't moved. The inner border is done the same way. Both have 40% opacity and the gradients go from the bottom of the bottom pixel of a shape to the top of of the top one. What I noticed when using the conditional formatting dialog is that it might be helpful to add labels next to the UI elements. At least for me it'd make the UI more intuitive. What do you think? We should decide if we want to move button columns (cf.e Insert Object OLE Object) to the bottom and convert them to rows. Two clicks in Glade and we'd have more coherent dialogs. One thing that would be pretty nice and should take to long to be developed: - - Implementing those pop-ups that the color buttons have for bullets/numbering as well as masterpages I think they don't interrupt the workflow as much as a dialog, which pops up and maybe hides the content one is working on. Michel had made a mockup quite some time ago (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Michelr). I'd prefer to have small pictures like in the dialog instead, but I guess that's not a big issue. Do you think it's realistic that this could be implemented for the next release? I worked on most of the issues and will continue doing so. lc-outline icons, lc_incrementlevel, and lc_decrementlevel shouldn't use navigation icons What do you mean by 'navigation icons'? - lc_autosum seems too sharp/thin, which doesn't really fit well with Tango. What's wrong with the icon we have now? I made it a bit bolder. I used a sigma with serifs since most formulas are set with them. IMHO the icon thus looks more familiar. lc_paragraphdialog and lc_controlcodes both use the same Paragraph symbol, yet they have nothing to do with each other. Well, in one case the symbol stands for a paragraph and in the other one it is an example of a control code. Galaxy uses similar icons. What would you suggest? - lc_insertdraw uses a paintbrush symbol, which portrays painting rather than drawing. We might think about using a pencil or a pen instead. A pencil would be good. LibreOffice's human icon theme contains an icon for switching between editing and just viewing, which is also the icon for gedit in Ubuntu's and elementary's icon themes. IMHO it would be nice if we could use icons from the human/ elementary icon theme for better integration. Do you know whether I could simply copy icons from /icon-themes/human/cmd and add the authors to the credits file? On a related note: There are some Gnome icons which looks rather dull and have nice elementary (GNU GPL v3) equivalents. Would it be possible to include some of them? Crediting the author, of course? Anyway, I created the icon in Inkscape and I also watched that tutorial some time back. I knew that the Android guidelines recommended a tilted icon, but apparently I overdid it a bit. With less tilt it should look a bit better, too. @ Sveinn: The guidelines were the reason why I used perspective, to make it look similar to the system icons. I'll try green waves next. First, the Windows-specific theme for LibreOffice (look of the toolbars etc.) has been changed to make it fit better into a Metro environment. The icon theme used on Mac OS has been changed to Tango so that we use the same one on all desktop platforms, which makes is easier to make progress. Currently I'm working on replacing some of the non-tango icons with new versions. Also our branding will be revised for the next version. We aim for flat colors and overall a swiss style design. Michael suggested that if the conversion can be automated (apparently there's already some code), that we re-work each of the dialogs incrementally, which sounds great to me I think that's an awesome development, allowing us to actually work ourselves on the widget layout etc. We should keep this in mind for the options dialog. Strange, the icons are all aligned to the pixel grid where possible, so they should be sharp. What might be relevant is that this isn't an actual screenshot. I took a screenshot and used it in Inkscape. There I hid the old icons with rectangles colored like the background and then exported the whole drawing as png. If you want to check the SVG: http://ubuntuone.com/0UEhSYKYLrXrcMpbP1lTG9 Maybe you could try Abiword with the Gnome icons, to see whether that causes an issue, too. My LCD isn't color-managed, so I don't if that's somehow related to the issue. I started adapting Writer's Insert menu to the way I use it. I grouped the items actually inserting some kind of object and separate from these the items dealing with text, like footers, indexes etc. At the bottom are menu entries dealing with some sort of embedding ( I assume that relatively few people use that compared to the top items. ) That way the distance between the 'Insert' menu button and the (in my case) most used items was decreased. Additionally I enabled the icons in menus, which IMHO makes it much easier to find a certain function. Hi Klaus-Jürgen, I agree that we should get rid of the galleries we have right now. But I imagine that stuff people might use are the bullet points and maybe rulers. We already have dialogs dedicated to each, so if that's all we want to ship we could drop the gallery for good. Or do corporations make use of this? Hi Andrew, I'm Alex, not Mirek :) 1) During the last IRC meeting we decided that I'd do the tentative design for both whiteboards, which combines the proposals and will later be used during the development. Hi Mirek, these suggestions sound reasonable. I integrated them, if anybody has another opinion, please mention it. These things might be useful somehow in the future -- that's why we even keep an archive of finished whiteboards. We could still access the proposals after removing the !---- tags, and it would remove quite some clutter. [libreoffice-design] Profile picture for G+ page
Hi everyone, we now have a Google+ page which is probably going to be used to announce some of our designs or ask for user input. Facebook basically says 'piss off if you don't have an account' and Twitter might make it harder to follow a conversation between several people. I didn't find a way how to let people comment that aren't logged in, but we can at least present some information that way and link to our mailing list. https://plus.google.com/102673546895803839652/posts I created a preliminary profile picture, if anyone wants something else, please voice your critizism or come up with another design. Thanks for giving a heads up. Nice to see so much progress :) Since feature freeze is in roughly 3 weeks, some of the upcoming improvements (document themes, templates dialog) won't make it into 3.6, right? If we get a quick response from Jakub, will we be able to replace some old icons? We'd need some basic guidelines for that and some publicity. What do you think? How should we go about it? I think we should create a wiki page, list the new templates and some ideas for contributors. To keep the quality high, we should let the team (and contributors) vote on IRC and point e.g. to http://www.apple.com/iwork/ for inspiration purposes. BTW, Alex and Astron, I referred you as the people to go to for the Tango icon set, as I feel you two are most involved there. Nice to have some input from such a big user group. I agree, themes/styles/color, font schemes are really useful. I think the way MS Office displays these is very convenient, but we currently lack the option to style tables. An odf file contains a style.xml file, could that be used to store such a style?
