hi christoph So I felt free to add some introduction, changed the formatting / numbering a bit, added a license recommendation, and changed the text a bit. Concerning the latter, my aim was to emphasize the personal contribution ... I hope that's fine for you. yes, of course :) and the formatting is way better now, thanks a lot! What's the next thing you'd like to improve? ;-) uhmm, i guess this is ok for now. it's not too long, which means new contributors can read through it in a few minutes, but it contains all the important things they should be aware of when making contributions. the only thing i'd add is a link to this page from the get started page (if there is one) or from the design kick off page. tobias 2011/10/29 Christoph Noack christ...@dogmatux.com Hi Tobias! Re: [libreoffice-design] New web banners. Feedback?
Aleksandar, You are welcome and like I said in a reply to one of your emails the Autumn Season banners did inspire me to do something that I'm not sure that we have done before. I am almost done with it, the problem is that I do not own the software that I am making it in and am making it at school. I know of an open source alternative, but to be honest I just found it and it NEEDS A LOT of work for me to even think about using it. I hope to have something that I can show the team by this Saturday, for that is the next time I will go to DeVry. Just wanted you to know that you did inspire someone to do something new and different. Andrew On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 2:28 PM, Aleksandar devaleksan...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, I want to thank you all for your support. I read all your emails and this was great experience so far. Tobias, I understand your point but please note one thing, my time is (and will probably be this year) very limited so I don't have time to create graphic in gimp/inkscape from start. I used gimp before and would like to use it again and I know about inkscape, it's always great to learn something new,new tool, new language etc. and it's not problem to work with these tools but as I said I am currently very busy and time doesn't allow me to do all that things. My idea was to inspire people to create better graphic, to motivate them. I was aware about problem you are talking about. As Christoph said: Why do I say that? Because Aleksandar told me about his tools preference in advance - and as long is able to read PSD files to a certain extend, we should aim for data exchange compatibility, not tools compatibility. I've heard many designers who simply prefer to stick with their tools ... I sent him email to see will this be a problem. I was happy to join Libreoffice project and tried to create something new and fresh but I also knew that using commercial software can be problem in opensource community. I wanted to see can I post my work here so other can see it and maybe create better graphic or get new ideas. This part of email I sent to Christoph (just my part that can be shown in public,I respect others privacy): I have one very important question. [bold] *I work with Photoshop and all graphic I created * *is done with Photoshop. *[/bold] Will that be a problem? and Also, it's not problem for me to upload and send you files but as I said all work is done in Photoshop and would like to hear from you will that be a problem. I showed that I am interested in this problem and that I wouldn't post any work that others can see as problem in opensource community. I just wanted to offer my time and experience. My idea was to post some new things on my wiki page and inspire people to create new graphic for LibreOffice project, to share it with friends and to have something cool to show them about LibreOffice. Just that. You don't need to use it,share it or do anything with it if you don't like it. I was inspired and wanted to share that ideas with others. David,Andrew,Sveinn i Felli,Christoph, thanks for your kind emails. These kind of email motivates me to work harder and to help opensource projects. Hi Aleksandar, On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 9:28 PM, Aleksandar devaleksan...@gmail.com wrote: Tobias, I understand your point but please note one thing, my time is (and will probably be this year) very limited so I don't have time to create graphic in gimp/inkscape from start. My idea was to inspire people to create better graphic, to motivate them. Aleksandar, speaking for myself, I'm perfectly happy for you to continue the great work you've been doing, using the tools you feel comfortable with. I understand that you don't have time at the moment to learn how to produce all the same effects with Gimp and Inkscape. It is possible to convert many things from Photoshop and Illustrator into Gimp and Inkscape formats. The most useful thing is for us to *have all the source files on the wiki*. That already makes an enormous difference. And the most important thing is that we don't want to discourage you from continuing the fantastic contributions you've been making. With an Open Source project like LibreOffice, you have to remember a few things and not be discouraged by them: * when you offer work, there are some people who are not shy of making opinionated statements even when they never/rarely do any actual useful work for the project. You don't need to pay too much attention to them. But do remember that the people who actually use your work and make the requests for graphics are extremely grateful for your work, and admire and respect your creativeness and skill. * There is absolutely *no* official TDF policy against the use of work from commercial programs. We just need the source files in a reasonably usable form. Photoshop and Illustrator are market standards in graphic design, and there are actually lots of people on this list who have and use those tools themselves. So don't feel shy about continuing to use them. * The fact that we give time and work to an Open Source project shows that we care about Open Source software. But sometimes people tend to be over-zealous about the subject. It would be very sad if you were to stop working for the project just because you use Adobe products and you get the feeling that. therefore, your work isn't welcome. We really need talented artists like you, who actually produce professional quality artwork and don't just spend their time writing to mailing lists. What you've been doing is really superb. I do hope we don't lose your interest because of the unproductive - even counter-productive - comments of people who don't actually *produce* very much themselves. This is all my own 2 cents, but I just can't sit here and say nothing when I see a reproduction of some of the silly and negative attitudes and behaviors that have been quite damaging to this project in the past. -- David Nelson -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-design] New web banners. Feedback?
Hi All, I want to thank you all for your support. Thanks Where have I seen this before... http://www.internetnews.com/blog/skerner/happy-birthday-libreoffice.html ^_^ Thanks Daniel, it's always great to see LibreOffice in the news ;) I have also posted some new things and ideas on my wiki page: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:See I have so many things to say but this email is already way too long. Re: [libreoffice-design] New web banners. Feedback?
Totally agree with David. Aleksandar used the tools he had on hand - and was very productive doing so. Nothing wrong with that. We already had a similar situation for the Motif development; Nik used CS5 for initial layout which at the end was converted into an open SVG-format. It took some frustration though to get it right [*], there are issues with transparencies, groupings and Smart Objects ?? when exporting from the Adobe products. We should rather be ready to help Aleksandar if such problems arise when he produces the final vector graphics. If a design is supposed to be developed by multiple designers from the start, then of course the use of an initial open format like SVG would be more adequate. So if the final output is good (that is in an open format, editable for further development, translation etc.) I dont care about the initial tools - it could as well have been done with a Rotring pen on Canson paper. Best regards, Sveinn í Felli (who uses extensively FOSS software, is mostly Windows free since 10 years ago, and has never used Facebook - therefore I don't exist :-) ) [*] example: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/msg01444.html Þann þri 27.sep 2011 22:40, skrifaði David Nelson: Hi guys, Sorry, but I disagree with criticising Aleksandar like this. 1) We need creative people doing work for our project. guys this guy has payed a lot of money for the program he is using, and is very skilled with the tools he every one, has. though I think that we should use free and open source software, we can not force him to use it. why should he switch to the programs that we use if it is compatible that we use. we should not be insulting him for using adobe's produce we should be encouraging him to try out what we use. Im not sure but I think that he is new to open source and does not have the passion that we do for FOSS. but he does have some passion for our software. why else would he be makeing these freaking awesome banners for us. he decided to help us advertise LibreOffice. this is a big problem that we open source people have. I know that we are passionat for this software, but we are really bad at this. if you read some of my email responses you will know that I hate micro$ft, and would like every one to use Ubuntu or other GNU/Linux distro's. I think that every thing that Micro$ft does is stupid, but the person that uses micro$ft produces is not stupid. the user that uses Windo$ just does not know that they have any other choice besides Macinto$$h. Re: [libreoffice-design] New web banners. Feedback?
Hi Christoph, all, I have just uploaded two new files with an exclamation mark as David proposed (Thanks to David). I updated my wiki page with licence information, sorry about that. I hope that will be ok now, if I need to do anything else please feel free to tell me. Also, I want to say Thank you all. So please feel free to write, any feedback is welcome. Thanks, Aleksandar My opinion is that Spring 3 is very good, Spring 2 also but may benefit from a slight gradient inside the logo. The form factor of the other propositions is surely useful, Mercury 2 and 3 seem to fit with the design guidelines and could work. Personally I don't think The Winter and Autumn series are ready. Maybe we could develop a similar series of banners/ads for individual LO-components; I'd think we should be in touch with marketing for the slogans (same for all or each it's own ?). Some changes I made based on your feedback: -new banner: Spring Season 3 with better Logo version as suggested -I changed letter i to I (my idea was to create something that suggest : I love freedom like : I heart_image freedom),you are right about that i Autumn season, I think displaying apps icons can be a good idea, but the arrangement don't feel enough natural. -I tried to suggest L like Libre with that icons arrangement, new versions (Autumn Season 3 and 4) are available for review why did you not call Mercury summer? Summer series is coming ;) I'd think we should be in touch with marketing for the slogans (same for all or each it's own ? - I use resources I found on wiki ,for slogan ideas I use : http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Slogan -for fonts, logos and colors I use: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding but that is great idea if someone in marketing can help with ideas or slogans (I was not sure who I should contact for this) I tried to keep this reply as short as it can be so I didn't quote every message but I have all of them in mind while witting this and while working on design Thanks everyone, Aleksandar -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

So please feel free to write, any feedback is welcome. Great work, and welcome to the design team! I agree with others that Spring 3 is the most attractive proposal. I would suggest a subtle drop shadow on the Download Now text. For winter, I would suggest using the stylised LibreOffice logo (lighter outline with inner shadow effect, just like you have in the logo at the bottom-left) and having the text match the green in Winter 2 (i.e., it should be lighter) For the autumn series, I would suggest overlaying the top of each icon over the bottom of the other icons in the vertical segment of your 'L' shape; this would make it more consistent with the horizontal segment. For Mercury, I would use the version with the grey background, but with white text rather than green. I do like the green version too - it's just that the logo seems to lack depth; maybe we should work on a white version of the logo that has a similar inner shadow effect? Thanks. Of course, it won't be problem for me to upload psd files so you can edit and use them. 2011/9/22 David Nelson li...@traduction.biz Hi Aleksandar, Really nice graphics! :-) I see you posted .png files. RE: [libreoffice-design] New web banners. Feedback?
Wow! Great job! Spring Season 3 seems to be the most professionally done out of the Springs. I'm a big fan of the white/white with slight gradient background banners for LibreOffice. It makes the whole look appear cleaner. Sometimes less is more... Winter Season 1b seems to be the most professionally done out of the Winters. With this season, it really needs the heart; it makes the banner make a lot more sense to non-LibreOffice people. As stated before, the white background seems cleaner and more professional than the green. Autumn Season 2 and 3 seem to be the most professionally done out of the Autumns. Between the two, Autumn Season 3 seems more natural. My only critique is that perhaps the Math icon should be separated from the LibreOffice icon since they have the same color in Autumn Season 3. If the arrangement was similar to the Summer season ordering, then it should be fine. Summer Season 1 and 3 seems to be the most professionally done out of the Summers. Between the two, Summer Season 1 seems to align with the brand better. Summer Season 3 would be nice for high contrast situations (i.e. visual impaired individuals). My only critique is that Summer Season 8 should not have the cut-off edge. IMHO, the trimmed corner should be reserved for the paper icons; otherwise, we risk over-using it and making the motif a secondary look. In summary... You are awesome ^_^ Daniel Merker Computer Engineering Graduate Student Wayne State University -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I posted them on my new (and only) wiki page: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:See [...] Great work, and welcome to the design team! I agree with others that Spring 3 is the most attractive proposal. Yep, I do agree ... I think Spring 3 (looking at the Spring proposals) works best concerning our overall branding and has some nifty details. Although I (again) have to say that's a pleasure to look at all this work. How to continue with that? Present that to the marketing team ... wait a bit ... and derive the real banners? One thing I'm currently unsure about is whether we can say Windows or Macintosh without mentioning that these are registered / trademarks. I would suggest a subtle drop shadow on the Download Now text. For winter, I would suggest using the stylised LibreOffice logo (lighter outline with inner shadow effect, just like you have in the logo at the bottom-left) and having the text match the green in Winter 2 (i.e., it should be lighter) Concerning Winter Season - that reminds me of the very first LibreOffice download button I've made over a year ago. Does anybody remember that? It had a download arrow within the document logo that switched to a bright red heart :-) Unfortunately, people asked to use something more neutral ... but here it fits very well. Since we are at it ... I have been asked by Italo (Aleksandar: he is one of the TDF media contacts) whether we could provide a web banner for our first anniversary. It is just a few days from now ... Here is what he wrote: I would like to offer a banner to online media willing to help TDF. Something very simple, with TDF/LibreOffice, and a cake with one small candle. Is there any chance that you could come up with something like that? I don't want to mis-use any of you, but I think that's a great chance to get some more visibility for LibO and our team. I don't know what size fits best - Aleksander, Ivan, all - what's common for that? Some time ago, I collected some sizes on the donation challenge wiki page: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/FoundationChallenge For our website, I'd suggest 440x64 (the size of our current banners), but the sizes of the banners that Aleksandar has created on his wiki page are as good a size as any. I'd just suggest making them media friendly by making them look as little like ads as possible (e.g., by avoiding borders or overly strong colors other than green perhaps?). The media know how to resize images so we should just put a small selection on offer (preferably as SVG) and let them choose whichever one suits their formatting. Hi Aleksander, all! Wow, thanks for your mail ... don't know where to start. First, your designs look very professional, clean and LibreOffice like. Thats amazing for the first (and most presumably last) iteration :-) I assume that we need to check whether people also need smaller web banners, since many request came from people wanting to show their support. Like those Dowload Firefox buttons ... but here I am not an expert. Anybody with some experience? Next, using your personal wiki page an asking for feedback ... great working style. I already feel a bit sorry being unavailable today (full day workshop, plus evening event) ...hear you soon. Cheers, Christoph -- Sent via mobile...
