I'm using the en_GB locale and the Human theme. I just tried switching to en_US, and lo and behold, the problem went away! A friend of mine using fr_BE couldn't reproduce the bug either... So I guess it's an issue with the en_GB locale. [Bug 24970] Re: evince crashes when highlighting text at line end
From Kristian Høgsberg (upstream): The only ABI/API guarantees provided by poppler are for the glib and qt bindings. We can not guarantee any kind of stabilty for the core xpdf API, since any bugfix or security fix will touch some class and add or remove member variables. The problem is that xpdf was never designed with a library / app split, so we're basically exposing the entire implementation. This is why we've chosen to write the wrappers - they provide a minimal, opaque API that we can control and audit easily. The xpdf headers are only installed as an option, and are provided under use-at-your-own-risk terms. What I'll commit to CVS, though, is a change to the poppler-glib.pc file that will list poppler as a Requires.private dependency so that evince and other apps using the glib bindings wont be linking directly to a library that break ABI. With that it should be possible to bump the libpoppler.so soname without affecting poppler-glib users, but I'm reluctant to commit to even that. Basically any change in the poppler core will affect ABI, so we'd be bumping the soname with almost every commit. Oh one more reason for not bumping soname on libpoppler.so abi breakages: since libtool is braindead and actively defeats clever linking (it expands all dependencies of a library) I don't want to break poppler-glib user because of an ABI change in a library they don't use directly. -- evince crashes when highlighting text at line end https://launchpad.net/bugs/24970 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

If you hit ctrl-L while in Nautilus, it adds an address bar to the GUI where you can type a path in. This is like the address in in Windows Explorer. I thought it would be a good idea to add an option to enable this bar under the view settings in Nautilus. I accidently figured out how to add the bar while messing around in the File managment utility. If you use the ctrl-L shortcut, the bar is only there while you have Nautilus up. When you enable it in the File managment utility, it stays there permanently. Hope I was able to explain it correctly ;) Anyway, Dennis Kaarsemaker responded and said that it was a native feature of Gnome 2.15 and that it would be in Edgy. Thanks for emailing me. [Bug 38198] Re: Garbled using open source Radeon driver
Emmanuel - changing the icon set to Tangerine does seem to clear up the problem for me. After I saw your last comment, I started checking for artifacting/corruption in menus and scrollbars and switching between Human and Tangerine icon sets. On one occasion, in gFTP, I saw what might have been some very minor corruption in one of the horizontal scrollbars. However, I've been unable to duplicate it. [Bug 47506] RE: [Bug 47506] Re: OpenOffice files not openable in Places-RecentDocuments
Out of 377 items in .recently-used, Mime-Typeapplication/octet-stream/Mime-Type appears 6 times - with *odp twice, with *ods twice, and with *odg twice. On the other hand, 3 presentations, 17 graphics, 5 spreadsheets and 1 text opendocument files have the correct mime type. I think I might have found another clue. Some presentations have caused OpenOffice to collapse on startup - they begin to load, and then ooffice shuts down and gives me the document recovery error message. One file in particular was causing a lot of troubles back in March on Suse. At the time, I seemed to correct this problem by reinstalling the sun java jre (1.5) and the reinstalling openoffice. The problematic file was not in my .recently-used in Dapper, so I tried to open it conventially (double-clicking in Nautilus). OpenOffice crashed again, and the resulting entry in .recently used shows Mime-Typeapplication/octet-stream/Mime-Type. I'm led to believe that all OpenOffice files open at the time of such a crash will result in the faulty mime-type entry in .recenty-used. Mime-Typeapplication/octet-stream/Mime-Type, that is the issue. [Bug 40314] Re: Themable logout dialog
Sadly I did not have time to look into ubuntu stuff during the last few weeks. Updated my Dapper insallation now and don't understand why my hack to replace the icons (directly replacing the gnome-session-* icons in gnome/48x48/) doesn't work anymore... seems like the icons are compiled in now? why? this only makes the executable bigger... To be more specific, before that, gnome-session used the gnome-session-* icons in /usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/, so I could replace those. [Bug 47717] Should provide welcome/test sip:number on startup
Public bug reported: Ekiga is an Internet/VoIP softphone. After signing up with the ekiga.net SIP service on startup, there are no hints about how to use this and no way to test that the SIP connection is currently working. The sip: URI bar at the top of the screen could do with being populated with an example, such as: sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (hello is likely to be understood in many languages). The portion of this URI afte the 'sip:' can be highlighted so it is automatically overwritten if the user begins to type or paste a number in. The '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' could say 'Welcome' or 'Hello' in multiple languages followed by the useful 4-second loopback test. This would ensure the user was comforted, even if their microphone was not working and would check for a working SIP connection. Currently there is no clue as to how to start using Ekiga or ekiga.net after installation. I can finally report some good news. Now every time I try (using the latest CD), I get the attached error dialog. The dialog is blank and doesn't have any GUI buttons, but if I close it from the title bar, ubiquity takes me back to the manual partition screen *and* my hard disk isn't hosed. Hooray! I suggest that a simple message and Ok button be put in the error dialog -- maybe something about the operation failed, perhaps you need to run checkdisk on existing partitions before attempting manual partitioning. But honestly, as long as it doesn't erase data I couldn't care less about the error dialog :-D Thanks again for your diligence on this. [Bug 47746] Important emblem is too big
Public bug reported: The Human theme seems to use the default GNOME emblems for all categories except for 'Important', where the Tango emblem is used. However, when the 'Important' emblem is chosen for a folder, it is a lot bigger than the default GNOME ones, and it is in fact just as big as the folder icon itself. This seems to be related to a bug either in Nautilus or Tango (see https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/47001). This same bug seemed to affect the 'symlink' emblem, also from Tango (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/tango-icon- theme/+bug/36833), and there the solution adopted was to patch the theme in order to specifically use a smaller 'symlink' emblem. [Bug 47619] Re: nautilus sometimes crashes when opening new window
There really is no sure way to trigger this bug; clicking on a partition on the desktop might work now, but in five minutes it might trigger a crash. Admittedly what seems to trigger it most often is calling a partition directly from the 'removable media' menu under 'Places' , though it's certainly not exclusive to this procedure; I've had nautilus crash when calling the downloads folder from the Firefox download manager. I have uploaded a screenshot of the nautilus window that appears after I simply click on the 'Home Folder' option under the 'Places' menu: http://img303.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nautilus24no.png I think I've tried the spatial mode before but I'm not sure if I was using the Konqueror file manager since I can't figure out now how to activate it in Nautilus. And as you can see, there are a bunch of duplicate buttons for opening the current folder on a terminal (from the nautilus-open-terminal package) that don't happen to work most times (they open a terminal on my home folder). They started appearing like this only after the last few times I updated this box about a week ago. Before there was there an option for opening the current folder with Konqueror. After purging and reinstalling the nautilus-open-terminal package, the duplicate buttons remain, but at least sellecting the option from the right click menu now works again. I've had other issues towards the end of the beta fase that other people were describing on the official ubuntu irc support channel, such as having my username removed from the sudoers (admin) group, and X getting it's configuration messed up. I guess using a development beta always involves these kind of issues, that's why it's called a development release, no matter how careful the developers are, there are always incompatabilities or specific cases which cannot be predicted, and which should be reported by the users. I think I will really prefer to reinstall eventually in a few days when the final version comes out. -- nautilus sometimes crashes when opening new window https://launchpad.net/bugs/47619 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 47619] Re: nautilus sometimes crashes when opening new window
Forgot to mention I'm using a Ubuntu installation which was dist- upgraded from a fresh Breezy install to Dapper Beta, and I have been using it regularly for about a month. Just thought I'd mention this since some of the bugs I've been experiencing have been reported as being related to performing the upgrade from Breezy to Dapper. -- nautilus sometimes crashes when opening new window https://launchpad.net/bugs/47619 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 43951] Re: Background displays, but gnome panel doesn't start
I had the same problem where I did a fresh dapper RC install and gnome did not start. The problem was solved by removing the user from audio group. If you add the user to the audio group again and the log out and try to log in again, it will fail again. If there is a solution for this please let me know.
