[Bug 66104] Re: scim: input freezes in various application under XIM mode

2007-10-11 Thread Ming Hua
** Summary changed:

- scim input freezes in various applications
+ scim: input freezes in various application under XIM mode

** Description changed:

- I filed a bug (#65489) against gnome-terminal. But since I've seen input
- freezing in firefox and gaim as well, I am opening a new bug against
- scim.
+ In gutsy, the default mode of scim (detemined by im-switch's settings
+ scim) uses XIM mode. This may cause problems in some applications and
+ make it impossible to input anything, even if you choose the
+ English/Keyboard input method. This happens most often in nautilus, but
+ is also seen in gedit, gnome-terminal, etc.

- I am using edgy, and scim under en_US.UTF-8 locale. Sometimes, I cannot
- type anything into applications, such as gnome-terminal, firefox and
- gaim.
+ This bug has been around for a long time, it only became more visible
+ because of the change in the default settings of scim and the Ubuntu
+ package.

- Steps to reproduce:
+ There are two work arounds for this problem:

- 1. Make sure you are using scim. If you are not already, type im-switch
- -s scim-pinyin in a gnome terminal. Log out Gnome and then log back in.
+ 1. If you do not use any programs linked to libstdc++5 (very few of the
+ Ubuntu official packages do, one know exception is the fglrx video
+ driver for ATi cards; but plenty of third-party programs do, such as
+ firefox downloaded from www.mozilla.com, and Adobe's PDF reader), you
+ can use the scim-immodule setting in im-switch. To change the im-switch
+ setting, just run im-switch -s scim-immodule command.

- 2. Open a gnome-terminal.
+ 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you dont' know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
+ (a) Set scim not to start automatically (because it's useless to change the
configuration file when scim is running) using the command im-switch -s none.
 Log out and re-login.
+ (b) Edit your ~/.scim/config configuration file, change the
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic option to true.
+ (c) Reset scim to start automatically with command im-switch -s scim. Log
out and re-login.

- 3. Press Ctrl-Shift-T for 5 times in very short intervals, to have 6
- tabs open in all.
-
- 4. If the gnome-terminal is still alive at this time. Type exit to
- close tabs one by one. You'll probably get a dead gnome-terminal when
- closing the second or third tab.
-
- For me, it's a show blocker, because it's very annoying and causes work
- loss.
+ If you are using programs linked to libstdc++5 as well as deadkeys,
+ there is no known workaround for you. You may try the scim-bridge
+ setting of im-switch (you need to install scim-bridge-* packages first),
+ but it's not clear whether it works or not.

[Bug 145278] Re: [gutsy] getting Error Printing: Too many failed attempts error when printing through GtkPrintOperation

2007-10-11 Thread Herbert V. Riedel
to sum it up:

printing to file (either pdf or ps) works, since it doesn't get sent via
IPP

I haven't found yet(? -- see below for gedit)an application, which uses the gtk
printing API and does not fail to print via cups;
applications which I have tried so far:

gtk-demo
evince
evolution
eog
gnumeric
epiphany

except for gedit, which seems to be able to print; but I'm not sure which
printing API it uses, since the printing dialogs looks/feels different from the
applications listed above; maybe it uses the gnome printing API?

[Bug 151523] evolution calendars disappeared

2007-10-11 Thread Carl-Erik Kopseng

Quitting evolution, restarting a couple of times, suddenly made it work. I then

[Bug 150877] Re: Can't extract to non-local directories

2007-10-11 Thread Mark Crutch
Just to clarify, I'm _not_ referring to an SMB share that has been
mounted to a local mount point (e.g. via an entry in fstab, or via the
mount command) - I'm only referring to remote directories accessed via
a path in Nautilus that starts with smb:// (or ssh://, or ftp://). The
following steps might be a better way to reproduce the problem -
provided you can ssh to your local machine:

* Open a Nautilus window and press ctrl-L to focus the path
* Enter a path of ssh://[EMAIL PROTECTED] - replacing username as
appropriate
* Enter your password when prompted, and tell it to remember the password until
you log out
* You should now be looking at the filesystem of your local machine, but
accessed via ssh
* Navigate to a directory in which you have full access rights (e.g.
/home/username)
* Right click, select an option from the Create Document menu, then edit the
document and save it - in other words, verify that you do have rights to create
and edit files via that window

* Now open a second Nautilus window and navigate to a directory containing an
archive of some sort
* Double-click on the archive to open Fileroller
* Drag a file from Fileroller into the first Nautilus window (the ssh window).
You will be prompted to allow access for Fileroller, which you should then
accept (Allow once or Always allow)
* The file is _not_ created at the destination

If you were already doing something along these lines, then please leave this
until someone else confirms the problem - but if you were extracting to a SMB
share that has a real local mount point, it might be worth trying these steps
instead to see if you can more easily reproduce the problem.

I'm sorry for not providing more info.
Google Desktop Search, is google's equivalent to trackerd. see
http://desktop.google.com/linux
Pressing ctrl twice will make the search box popup, so the user can enter the
search query.

The login screen I mention, is the one of GDM, when a user locks is session,
either for security, or to change to another logged in user. just press,
ctrl+alt+L, and you will see what I mean.
will this be enough to reproduce it?

[Bug 148614] network tool goes into busy loop trying to read nonexistent /root/.gnome2/network-admin-locations file on IBM xSeries 255

2007-10-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Running the 7.10 beta desktop livecd on an IBM xSeries 255, I set the
sole ethernet interface to have a static IP. A status window popped up
advising me to wait, and when it went away after a long wait the network
configuration tool became unresponsive and had 15-30second delays
between repainting its contents.

I straced the tool's pid (thank you for including this on the livecd,
btw!) and saw that it is in a non-stop polling loop trying to read a
nonexistent /root/.gnome2/network-admin-locations file. I'm not
positive that this is the cause of the refresh lag, as the tool became a
little more responsive after the strace began, but it does seem like a
problem.

[Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login)

2007-10-11 Thread cabernet54
I have made one funny test, I have installed together with the compiz
integrated in gutsy (full update) this deb package of beryl 0.3 for
gutsy:

http://telperion.wordpress.com/2007/...kubuntu-gutsy/

after I have put beryl-manager in startup configuration in session propriety
and after reboot for the first time, I have the panel fixed and not hidden.
You can, by beryl icon in the panel, like usually, choose compiz - beryl or
metacity, all work great independently!!

Perhaps this behavior can suggest to the developers something to find
one safe expedient compiz-related!

Very strange indeed

P.S. Sorry for my bad, bad English!

[Bug 148606] Static network settings while in livecd do not take effect without complete restart of network setting tool and re-assertion of the device checkbox

2007-10-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

While testing the 7.10 beta desktop CD on a variety of i386 and amd64
systems, we detected a problem in the behavior of the manual network
configuration tool.

If in a liveCD session, one selects System-Administration-Network or
NetworkManagerIcon-ManualConfiguration (they appear equivalent) and
sets up a network interface as having a static IP, the interface does
not activate until one closes the network tool, restarts it, unchecks
the network device's checkbox and then re-checks it again. From that

Re: [Bug 133567] Re: nautilus hangs on accessing vfat drives - statfs() blocks for a long time

2007-10-11 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Daniel,

Daniel R. [2007-10-09 16:30 -]:
Expect for the next kernel releases (if everything goes well) a dramatic
decrease in statfs() time (without usefree option).

I have tested a patch from FAT maintainer (OGAWA Hirofumi) which reduces
the time to about 6-8 seconds, in a 15 GByte partition (before it was 60
 seconds)

Thank you for the heads-up! It's too late for Gutsy, so we'll leave
the current workaround, but good to know that this will be fixed
properly in Hardy. Then we can revert the 'usefree by default' change
in gnome-mount.

[Bug 148606] Re: Static network settings while in livecd do not take effect without complete restart of network setting tool and re-assertion of the device checkbox

2007-10-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
upstream comment

gnome-system-tools just modifies the interface configuration file(s) and runs
ifup immediately on it in this case. I faced myself this problem a few times
some time ago when testing gnome-system-tools/NetworkManager cooperation code,
I found out I could reproduce it through command line too, and that everything
worked as expected if NM wasn't active.

My conclusion was that NM is not releasing properly the interface, so I'm
moving this bug there.

[Bug 151482] Re: hpdeskjet 3550 stops printing reports error other

2007-10-11 Thread rainmaker
Dear Sebastien,
Am a layman at this, took a shot at trying the beta version as I saw that label
on the site saying could help by installing. I was printing from a doc
attachment file in mail downloaded by thunderbird. It was the printer icon that
showed an error message saying other. I looked at what details I could throug
the icon and saw the printer status as 'processin' for the print job.
The one other thing is that I was on another workspace (isn't that the term for
another desktop?) since the other one was working on add and remove programmes
which had not completed. After the error I went and looked whether that had
completed - it had not. The icon showed an X mark and there was nothing else I
could do put try and put off the flashing light which never goes off on an
error whatever the opearting system.
If it repeats I could probably report it - don't know how to provide you a
screen shot!

[Bug 150231] Re: [gutsy] gedit ctrl+s triggers goto line not save file action

2007-10-11 Thread Jörn Dreyer
I read about customizable menus, but I don't know where to de-/activate
the feature.

AFAICT I have not activated it.

I will post the german labels, as that is what is Displayed:
Gedit - _Datei - _Speichern = Strg+S
Gedit - _Suchen - Gehe zu _Zeile = Strg+I

I tried highlighting a menu item and use Strg+something to change the
hotkey. As expecte, It did not work, as I assume the feature is not
enabled.
