[Bug 194982] [NEW] Option to disable creation of desktop icons for network shares accessed through nautilus

2008-02-24 Thread Ryan Haigh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hardy Alpha 5
nautilus 1:2.21.91-0ubuntu3

When accessing a network share via the Alt-F2 run dialog using
smb://server/share a desktop icon is created for the network share if
that share requires authentication.

When browsing after connecting via smb://server no icon is created.
After entering a shared folder that requires authentication a desktop
icon is created for the share, returning to smb://server and entering
another share that requires authentication creates another icon on the
desktop.

After creating two network shares that do not require authentication I
have confirmed that the desktop icon for the un-authenticated share is
also created for each share on the server.

A desktop icon is also created when accessing the same shares by IP
rather than the servers windows hostname.

I cannot confirm this behaviour when accessing sftp/ssh servers as this
functionality currently appears to be broken.

This feature may be useful for those who access a few shares regularly
however I access a large number of smb network servers on a daily basis
each with a significant number of shares and creating a desktop icon for
each share that I access quickly clutters the desktop often covering
other more important icons and is more of a hindrance than a help as
only a small number of these servers are accessed with any regularity
and 'unmounting' sledom accessed shares quickly becomes annoying. As
such I would like the option to disable the automatic creation of these
desktop icons for accessed shares. Perhaps this option could be
implemented through the use of an associated gconf key or the old
behaviour reimplemented such that these 'shortcut' icons are only
created when the connect to server option is used from the Places menu
or associated gnome panel applet rather than for every share accessed
via nautilus.

It seems, although I cannot be sure, that this functionality may have
introduced an additional delay when accessing authenticated shares as I
received the dialog Opening 'Share' you can cancel this operation...
Once again I cannot be sure that this is associated with the new default
behaviour of adding the desktop shortcut.

[Bug 194987] [NEW] Totem quits on startup due to X Window System error

2008-02-24 Thread n122103
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Obtained the following when attempting to run from the command line:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 42 error_code 8 request_code 140 minor_code 14)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 194987] Re: Totem quits on startup due to X Window System error

2008-02-24 Thread n122103
Hi

I should note that I'm actually running Xubuntu instead of ubuntu

Also, I tried running totem with the vesa drivers and those seemed to
work. I also tried the 'radeon' driver (open source one) and that
doesn't support cards past the X850 era (currently running on a Mobility
Radeon X1400) so X didn't get off the ground with that one.

I should also note that totem worked fine under the 'fglrx' driver until
a few days ago when I re-installed Xubuntu from scratch.

[Bug 194960] Re: [Hardy]Battery charge never updates, remaining time always unknown

2008-02-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for your bug report. However, it's not complete yet. We still need
some more information.
Could you please attach the output of the following commands in a file to the
bugreport:
gnome-power-bugreport.sh (Yes, it's a command.)
hal-find-by-capability --capability battery
lshal -m (This command isn't like normal commands, it is more like syslogd,
whenever an event happens while this command is running it is displayed in the
console where it was executed.)
gconftool --recursive-list /apps/gnome-power-manager

Thank you for your time,

[Bug 195035] [NEW] rhythmbox won't play a specific track if crossfading is activated

2008-02-24 Thread Creak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I've ripped the last White Stripes album (Icky Thump) in Ogg (quality=0.6).
The first track won't play in rhythmbox if crossfading is activated (0.0s, fade
between tracks of the same album, 256Ko). It works like a charm if it isn't.

I can give you the file if you ask me, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to
attach it here :)
I haven't tested on another computer, but the bug is reproducible at 100% here.
If someone can, at least, try at his place, that'd be great!

[Bug 136608] Re: [gusty Tribe5]Totem wrong subtitles synchronization

2008-02-24 Thread ubuntu4fun
Hi, Charles.

I've tested the subtitles problems on a final version of Gusty with all
the updates installed.

It seems that the bad synchronization of the subtitles (displayed too
late and not synchronized with audio and video) is still present in
Totem 2.20.0. However, it doesn't take place in every *.avi movie as
reported before.

Subtitles are displayed incorrectly in one of the five movies or so. The
same subtitles are displayed well in Windows and with SMplayer in
Ubuntu, though.

I'll test it in Hardy when the next Alpha version is out as I had some
verid problems with downloading repositories with Alpha 5 (the system
was in fact unusable).

[Bug 93602] [NEW] Amule completely disappears when auto-started iconized

2008-02-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: amule

I have Amule start automatically with the Gnome desktop. Amule has the
options start minimized and minimize to tray icon. With those
options turned on, Amule disappears completely after it is auto-started.
It still runs in the background, but it doesn't show in the task bar or
the system tray.

Steps to reproduce:
1) The amule package needs to be installed, obviously
2) Go to System - Preferences - Session and make a new entry for Amule
(/usr/bin/amule).
3) Start Amule.
4) In Amule, go to Preferences - General and check Start minimized, Enable
Tray Icon, and Minimize to Tray Icon.
5) Quit Amule, restart X
6) After Gnome initializes, Amule should be running (check with ps -A | grep
amule), but you won't see Amule anywhere on the screen.

There is a way to bring the Amule window back: Start Amule as you
manually would, i.e. Applications - Internet - Amule.

[Bug 95414] Re: gedit unable to open files on samba shares (7.04 Beta)

2008-02-24 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Tried this with Hardy Alpha 5 LiveCD; the bug is still there. In
Nautilus, I double-clicked on a .txt file that is located on a Samba
share; Gedit opened and displayed the same error as with Gutsy (Could
not open the file smb://myserver/myshare/somefolder/readme.txt.
Unexpected error: internal error). Also, the same warning message as
before appears in .xsession-errors (** (gedit:8307): WARNING **: Hit
unhandled case 3 (Internal error) in
gedit_io_loading_error_message_area_new.).

Again, it seems to depend on whether there is a Gedit instance running
or not. If Gedit is already running when doubleclicking on the file, it
opens correctly; if Gedit is not running, the error comes up.

Btw. running gedit smb://myserver/myshare/somefolder/readme.txt on
command line gives the same behavior.

[Bug 195063] [NEW] [hardy] file-roller silently omits files upon .tar(.gz, .bz2) creation

2008-02-24 Thread Christof Krüger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

The current version (GNOME file-roller 2.21.91) of file-roller omits
files when creating tar-archives out of folders containing many files.

This can cause data loss because the user thinks that (s)he has just
made a backup of the data, but the archive does not contain all files
without any warning or error message. This is especially serious since
file-roller is used for compression when encryping as one file is
requested through nautilus/seahorse. Users might destroy the original
files right after encryption, yielding complete data loss.

For the internals, please read my comment on
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487012. The patch applied to
fix this bug introduced this new serious bug.

I'm filing a separate bug here on LP as I consider this as a critical
bug which can be solved trivially (by dropping the patch from the above-
mentioned bug report).

[Bug 122208] Re: Mouse sensitivity acceleration settings reversed

2008-02-24 Thread A Kao
I believe these labels are simply wrong / misleading. Under Windows
there are two options called speed and acceleration. Speed dictates the
linear relationship between movement of mouse and cursor speed.
Acceleration makes the relationship non-linear. So rather than cursor
speed = mouse movement * speed setting, you have something like cursor
speed = mouse movement*speed setting + mouse movement^acceleration

However, the mouse preferences under Ubuntu correspond to something
different. If you look under gconf, theses two settings adjust
motion_threshold and motion_acceleration. Motion acceleration is
really speed, and Motion threshold is meant to disregard small
movements.

Therefore, it seems that the two fields in the mouse properties window
should be speed (replace acceleration) and sensitivity (keep the
same).

I'm using 8.04 Alpha 5.

[Bug 195083] [NEW] Cancel dialog buttons' wording is confusing

2008-02-24 Thread Gabriel Speckhahn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

When clicking the Cancel button to interrupt a burning session,
Brasero presents the following dialog:

Do you really want to quit?

Interrupting the process may make disc unusable.
 [*Cancel*] [Continue]

It may make users confused, as they may not know if clicking Cancel
will cancel the recording or their request, and Continue (the button
to actually stop it) may mistakingly lead them to believe Brasero will
continue burning, not cancel it, leading to possible data/media loss.

[Bug 195076] Re: The GIMP is named in hardy alpha 5 GNU Image Manipulation Program which is not explicit

2008-02-24 Thread James Westby
Hi,

In my opinion the current name is better. Firstly, it is more
obvious from the name what the program is for. Secondly,
you say it is known and famous as The GIMP, however
I assume this is only true within the people who have seen
the name and then found out what it was.

Thanks,

James

i must admit that i'm french therefore the sentence it is known and famous as
The GIMP was about my feeling considering my country.
Yet The GIMP is crossplatlform therefore its is *possible* to an ubuntu user to
have heard of it

Yet Firefox is explicitely named with its description (their is both
elements). Same for OpenOffice.org modules.

Maybe the same could be done with The GIMP (something like The GIMP
Image Manipulation) ?

[Bug 190413] Re: nautilus only able to open directories in text-based location bar

2008-02-24 Thread Christoffer Bördal
Open the nautilus filebrowser, press CTRL+L to get the text-based
location bar. Type the path of some file, then press ENTER. Nautilus
will present you with a error dialog, complaining that you typed the
path of a file instead of a folder.

I'm saying, it would be nice if nautilus was able to open files this
way, rather than just open directories. So instead of displaying an
error, nautilus could simply open the file with the preferred program,
same as if I had dubble-clicked an icon.

[Bug 136608] Re: [gusty Tribe5]Totem wrong subtitles synchronization

2008-02-24 Thread Charles
I will be glad to hear your results in the next Hardy Alpha release. Is
there anything you can find in common with the subs that work or the
ones that don't? Language, type of sub file, length of movie, codec
(audio or video), etc? Maybe there is a way to narrow it down more which
could help, if it seems fixed most of the time, such as it just has
problems with a specific video codec or something.

[Bug 195002] Re: [Hardy] Ktorrent KDE4 doesn't accept torrent url as argument

2008-02-24 Thread hyperair
I believe the source of the problem is the wrapper found in /usr/bin
/ktorrent-kde4. It was originally:

#!/bin/sh
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/kde4/lib
export KDEHOME=~/.kde4
export KDEDIRS=/usr/lib/kde4
export PATH=/usr/lib/kde4/bin:$PATH
/usr/lib/kde4/bin/ktorrent

I changed it to:

#!/bin/sh
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/kde4/lib
export KDEHOME=~/.kde4

Now it passes on the torrent URL perfectly.

[Bug 151536] Re: Hangs on login and uses 100% cpu

2008-02-24 Thread Caroline Ford
This is from gdb but it stopped using 100% cpu after I startred gbd.

The versions of syndbg packages were too out of date to install so not
sure how useful this is.

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-02-24 Thread ThomasNovin
I've written in my duplicate bug that the workaround with
use_time_for_policy did not work for me. This was only true before I had
rebooted. Now I got notification about low power, critical power and
then also a automatic suspend. Wow! :)

[Bug 195116] [NEW] gvfs: file transfers from remote server fail

2008-02-24 Thread nanog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Attempts to transfer large files die. This occurs with sftp, ftp, and
http connections. I confirmed that this problem is ubuntu specific
because file transfers from the above ports worked flawlessly using
winscp.

This is a regression from alpha4.

[Bug 76449] Re: Cannot sort static playlists

2008-02-24 Thread Charles
I can confirm this still exists in Hardy Alpha 5, with Rhythmbox 0.11.4,
which I assume will be the final version in Hardy. The bugzilla bug
seems active and there have been a recent patch or two proposed so that
is promising at least. I will try to work with them to see what can come
of it, and push to get this resolved for Hardy+1.

[Bug 186186] Re: web page background render errors

2008-02-24 Thread Stephen Cradock
This bug makes it difficult for me (and others, I'm sure) to use Firefox
3.0 beta 3 in Hardy. But there seems to be no acknowledgment that it
affects Firefox 3 - can that be added to the list of affected packages?
I confirmed a report of the bug as affecting Firefox, but it was marked
a duplicate of this bug and doesn't seem to connect from bugs affecting
Firefox.

[Bug 195118] [NEW] Battery stays at 100% when discharging

2008-02-24 Thread xerosis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

After charging my battery to 100%, it remains there when discharging.
This is pretty serious as I've assumed I had ample battery and my
computer shut off on reaching 0%. It seems to display the right value
after plugging in the power cable.

gnome-power-bugreport and /proc/apci attached.

[Bug 195119] [NEW] [hardy]GDM segfaults after settings are changed in Language Support

2008-02-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to repeat:
1. In System-Administration-Language Support, change the settings, ie switch
default language or turn complex character support on or off.
2. Log out.
Expected result: GDM-greeter
Actual result: GDM segfaults

If I manually restart gdm with /etc/init.d/gdm start after the segfault
and try it again, it works as expected.

/var/log/messages attached, this appears on the last line:

[Bug 195125] [NEW] accessability enhancement: 5 min fix?

2008-02-24 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

I just accidentally maximized gcalctool. Slightly suprisingly that I
could maximize it. Then I noticed the buttons all got bigger to fill
the space. Also cool. Surprising again, but actually perhaps handy.
What if I'm (partially) blind? Then I noticed that the font size of the
buttons was still the same (size 12?) as when the calculator was a
normal size window.

It would be helpful, I think, that since the buttons already scale to
fill the container size, why not also have the character font scale to
fill the button size? If this is /not/ a desirable action, this could
be added as an accessibility option.

Merits:
 - this should be an easy fix, perhaps 30 minutes for someone new to the code,
or 5 minutes for a regular maintainer.
 - another bonus for gcalctool. (Accessibility)
 - if done properly, should not bloat the binaries since font information is
already compiled in or shared.

Cool.

P.S. Sorry if there's extra information attached to this bug. I'm a
lazy snit and clicked the Help-Report a Problem link to get here . . .
