[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

Interesting. Instead of fixing root cause (ALSA driver having problem
with suspend/resume handler), you add workaround by restarting one
application, and call it fix.

 Bug description:
 SRU information follows:

Impact: A portion of users with a default or updated (intrepid-
proposed) Ubuntu 8.10 install experience inaudible audio from
 PulseAudio after resuming from suspend-to-ram.

Resolution: Configure users' pulseaudio daemons to suspend prior to
suspending to ram and to resume after resuming. This sequence is
accomplished via a pm-utils sleep hook.

 SRU debdiff:
 http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20316781/pulseaudio_0.9.10-2ubuntu9.2.debdiff

TEST CASE: Boot into a default or updated (intrepid-proposed) Ubuntu
8.10 install (e.g., desktop image). Suspend to ram, then resume.
Note the inaudible audio from PulseAudio.

Regression potential: No regressions have been identified in
 production.

 Background information follows:

 Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Sonando Audio Sparc 'squish.au' : Mu-Law, Ratio 8000 Hz, Mono

 [Suspend to Ram/Resume]

 aplay squish.au
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:546: error al abrir audio: Dispositivo ó recurso ocupado

Then you need to killall pulseaudio for apps that use pcm starts
 working again.
(Question: How you can stop/start/restart pulseudio? In Ubuntu /etc/
 init.d/pulseaudio script is disabled)

If you need more information, please let me know.

 Thx.

[Bug 306656] Re: Internal/external disk icons are bogus

2008-12-10 Thread Chris Coulson
Alex - here is what I noted from your data:

The Storage icon is the same as the Filesystem icon when mounted because
the Gnome icon theme does not contain a drive-harddisk-usb icon. If
the theme contains one, then it will be used. I have a theme with that
icon, and my USB drives have a different icon to the Filesystem icon
(the Human theme is also ok). If you don't like it, you should report it
to the Gnome bugzilla.

When an external drive is connected via USB but unmounted, it will show
the drive-removable-media-usb icon. For the Gnome icon theme, that is
a picture of a drive with a slot. The Human theme uses a picture of a
drive with a USB icon. The theme I use shows a picture of a thumb drive
for this icon. If you don't like it, you should report this to the Gnome
bugzilla.

As for the Filesystem icon, I'm not sure what other type of icon would
be suitable. I don't agree with you that this one is wrong. Can you make
a better suggestion?

Your Macintosh icon uses the drive-removable-media icon when not
mounted. This is because it is removable in the sense that it can be
mounted/unmounted by a normal user via HAL. What other icon do you
suggest when the filesystem has been removed (ie, unmounted) from the
system? This icon will use the drive-harddisk icon when mounted, which
is correct.

I'm going to reassign this to the gnome-icon-theme, as most of your
problems really are theme-specific. Please could you forward this
upstream to the Gnome bugzilla?

If you think that displaying drive-removable-media for unmounted
internal volumes is a bug, please also feel free to report that to the
bugzilla too.

Thanks

[Bug 306837] Re: gnome terminal crashes when changing the profile

2008-12-10 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 306763] Re: encrypted DVD without libdvdcss - not installed and cant'

2008-12-10 Thread Tom
Blimey, seems complicated.

I simply used the Synaptic Package Manager (System menu - Administration
- (near the middle-ish)) and used the search tool in that to find
libdvdcss and installed that way so Synaptics could sort all the
dependencies for me ;)

[Bug 110899] Re: workspace-switcher needs to work with dualhead setup

Yes, its about the very annoying workspace switching bug. I have to
delete and recreate them every time computer is started. Must be some
very trivial bug..

Moving apps from one screen to other is something else entirely and
probably too hard anyhow as they run on separate X servers.

[Bug 306768] Re: Toetm DVD player doesn't work

2008-12-10 Thread Tom
Err, im using 8.10 with Totem 2.24.3 without the troubles you describe.
I changed my gstreamer-properties video output to '... (no Xv)' because
the ati drivers aren't completely sorted out yet. Ati didn't want non-
microsoft users using their products for some reason but finally
relented quite recently.

Features?!?!?! lol, did a linux media-player have features? I'm putting
up with a lack of features because i find Linux so much easier to work
with and such a refreshing break after years of agro using microsoft
'systems'. I'm learning a lot but still a noob really.

Good luck and have fun with the freedom linux brings :)

[Bug 110899] Re: workspace-switcher needs to work with dualhead setup

2008-12-10 Thread Peter Adolphs
@zurgutt: Ok, but reading it again, I think the original post here is
actually really only about this very feature request, namely, using the
Workspace Switcher to display both screens and use it to move
applications from one screen to another.

@Andruk: The number of workspaces is a general window manager setting. I
agree it's confusing (see also
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=441658), but I think it's a
separate issue for which you should open a separate Launchpad bug report
if there is none already.

I suggest to reopen one of the duplicates, e.g. bug #139676 or bug
#152091, for the issue that the workspace switcher on screen :1 is
displaying screen :0 because it's a different issue. I've also created a
new upstream bug for this:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563974 which should be linked
with the reopened bug #139676 or bug #152091. As mentioned above, I also
think the upstream bug gnome-bugs #552744 linked here is about something
else (I haven't seen an upstream bug for the feature request). And this
bug here could be closed, if noone has an interest in the feature
requested.

[Bug 306860] [NEW] evolution crashes upon changes in preferences

Public bug reported:

I saw similar bugs on Launchpad, but they are all old and say that the
problem is fixed... I think I am using the latest version of Evolution,
so may be it isn't fixed after all.

To reproduce this bug:
Go to Evolution. Edit Preferences Select an email account Edit
'Defaults' Tab Change, say, 'Drafts' Folder location Click 'OK' CRASH!

I have two computers with Evolution installed and I can reproduce this every
single time in both the computers. When I start evolution from command line,
this is what I see in the end:

[Bug 306870] [NEW] Keyboard accessibility options lost at bootup

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm using the keyboard accessibility option called bounce keys. I've
found that some times (not always) this option becomes disabled at
startup, but keeps the value I settled. Sometimes it get a total reset
of the option.

I still can put my finger on what is causing this. Seems random, but perhaps is
related to those actions:
- Use of suspend or hibernate or suspend + hibernate
- Edit a system file: xorg.conf or laptop-mode.conf are two of the files I was
editing last days. Please note that the problem was there BEFORE activation of

[Bug 306877] [NEW] Sound global shortcuts don't work while evince is running

2008-12-10 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

While running evince, the global shortcuts for sound control I have
configured in System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts (CTRL+ALT+
different keys) stop working until I close evince. I have tried this
with both Rhythmbox and Banshee, both exibiting the same behavior. This
does not happen with Adobe Reader 8 running.

** Affects: evince (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 306761] Re: rhytmbox stops responding when playing from mp3

2008-12-10 Thread goto

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 303536] Re: Brasero - wrongly reports insufficient space on media

2008-12-10 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think it has something to do with the write permissions in the folder used as
temp for the conversion of mp3s.
after having copied the album (mp3) i was trying to burn to my home folder,
brasero didn't repeat that behaviour.

the burning originally failed; at that point the files i was trying to
burn belonged to another user and i had no write permission in the
folder they were in.

the other issue with displaying no space on disk in the main window is
another problem, that maybe should be addressed in an extra bug
report...

what's clear, is that the error messages in these 2 bugs have to become
more distinct, if one should ever be able to ascertain what's actually
wrong while trying to burn a cd with brasero

Re: [Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-12-10 Thread Daniel T Chen
On 12/10/2008 12:20 AM, zdzichu wrote:
Interesting. Instead of fixing root cause (ALSA driver having problem
with suspend/resume handler), you add workaround by restarting one
 application, and call it fix.

Obviously there's a linux component, too, but fixing the drivers is much
more invasive and not an appropriate task for an _already-released_ (and
thus _frozen_ version). Please recognise that the definition of a
StableReleaseUpdate precludes invasive changes.

There is work in jaunty to fix the PM (including enabling many
non-PM-enabled drivers) as part of the greater improving PM in Ubuntu
spec.

Hello Tom,

information on forwarding bugs upstream can be found here at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage#Forwarding%20upstream .So for
the gnome bug tracker that would be
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME . Everyone can file bugs
upstream because this is how community works; If someone does wrong the
bug will be closed or corrected with a comment and everythings fine ;).

[Bug 306860] Re: evolution crashes upon changes in preferences

2008-12-10 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 306922] [NEW] Evolution new label dialog should pre-select an unused color

2008-12-10 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When applying a label to a message in Evolution, there's a menu option
to create a new label. Clicking this brings up a dialog that lets you
type a label name and select a color. This color selection is always a
drab shade of gray by default, meaning that the user must choose a
custom color every time.

Instead, this dialog should default to a reasonable unused color (like a
primary color) so the user doesn't need to choose one from the color
wheel every time.

[Bug 76934] Re: network-admin doesn't allow the specification of extra modem init strings for ppp (required to make GPRS work)

2008-12-10 Thread Martin Pool
If this is still in Intrepid/Jaunty, I'd presume it's in network-
manager, so I opened it there. I don't see a field in nm where you can
enter extra init strings.

[Bug 294032] Re: Nautilus crashes when mounting an ISO using mount archive

2008-12-10 Thread A. Walton
You need to make sure that nautilus is not running before you start it
in gdb. You can assure this by running nautilus -q or just killing
nautilus. This will make sure that the gdb nautilus will be able to
connect to the session manager correctly.
