[Bug 224845] Re: With dual monitors (TwinView), maximized windows start up in wrong screen

2008-12-14 Thread themuddler
Experiencing the same as revgazza above with Intrepid 8.10. Note I'm
still using version 173 of the Nvidia driver due to a problem with
screen resolution on xscreen 1 with the new driver. A summary of the
behaviour I'm experiencing:

Application launched from top panel in xscreen 1 opens in xscreen 0 - bad
Application launched by association with a file-type in nautilus does the same
- bad
Launching using the console or Alt-F2 on screen 1 does open the app on screen 1
- good

Nautilus started from places menu starts on wrong screen - bad
Nautilus started from link on desktop starts on correct screen - good

VLC and Flash fullscreen mode does stay on the correct screen - good

[Bug 289669] Re: gnome-panel needs pointer or click to hide

2008-12-14 Thread Martin Mai
I can not confirm this for launchers, but for preferences menus:
1) Tell gnome-panel to auto-hide
2) Right click on the clock applet
3) Choose Preferences
4) Move the mouse away from the panel
- The panel does not auto-hide, you have to hover and un-hover it again.

Btw: I have compiz deaktivated so this seems not to be a compiz bug

Thank you.

[Bug 307751] Re: support comicbook formats: cb7, cba, cbt...

2008-12-14 Thread David Prieto
Hi,

I am using Evince 2.24-1-1ubuntu2 on Jaunty. I just uncompressed a .cbr
file and re-compressed the resulting folder to a .7z file, which I then
renamed to .cb7, but Evince can't open it. It says it does not support
this unknown file type (application/octet-stream).

As for using brainstorm or a specification, I always thought those were
for system-wide issues. Being specific to one package (evince), I
thought this was the best place to do it.

[Bug 307689] Re: file in cd not opening

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
Hmmm, can you try another cd/dvd drive?

I searched in the Synaptic Package manager for Nokia and found a number
of native linux apps that work for a whole range of different handsets
so that you wouldn't have to struggle with exporting/importing data as
you change handsets over the years.

Another way might be to try downloading the Nokia Suite from their
website? A google search gave me a few sites worth try and the download
was only 31.7Mb so it'd be fairly quick. I tried

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-Phone-Tools/Nokia/Nokia-PC-
Suite.shtml

but there was also

http://www.downloadpipe.com/drivers/review-Nokia-6125-USB-
OBEX-1127190.html

As it turned out the Nokia (Europe) site was too slow and heavy for me,
i couldn't be bothered to wait for its animations to appear.

Anyway, good luck with trying those 3 different routes. I tend to
prefer native linux apps rather than running stuff through
Wine/DosBox/whatever, otherwise i just don't feel like i really have the
freedom i'm aiming for. Anyway, each to their own - good luck and have
fun :)

[Bug 307689] Re: file in cd not opening

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
I have 2 dvd drives, the one that's slightly older also happens to be a
slightly less reliable brand but was a lot cheaper when i bought it.
Its great mostly but occasionally has a bit of trouble.

I find that whichever drive has trouble reading something usually the
other one can cope with it. i tend to use my glasses cleaner cloth to
clean the bottom of a dvd that wont read although Rob had one that was
so scratched that he used a sanding-machine to smooth it down!! It
worked but i definitely wouldn't recommend it!!

lol

Good luck and have fun :)

[Bug 307786] Re: Synaptic crashes and will not boot after

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
ok. 2 different ways immediately spring to mind.

1st way.
  Open a terminal window
Apps - Accessories - Terminal (as you know)
  type in su
for super-user - this gives you 'root privileges'
  enter the root password,
if you can't remember this use the 2nd way
now type in dpkg --configure -a

2nd way
  Open a terminal window
Apps - Accessories - Terminal (as you know)
type in sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo cheats your way into running a command as
though you were the superuser, it turns a blind eye to
the fact that you arent. It's good for one-off commands
such as the one given. Also it means you don't need the
root password (at least not in Ubuntu but some other
 distros would require it.)
  enter your user password

I haven't got a clue what dpkg --configure -a did when i tested it on my
machine, i checked through which repositories it looks up but couldn't
see any change. I guess i should have looked first ;)

[Bug 307816] Re: Rhythmbox closes down while dragging and dropping songs to MP3 player

2008-12-14 Thread goto
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Please install also the debug
packages as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 307786] Re: Synaptic crashes and will not boot after

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
Errr, that cleared up when i used 'Ctrl -' a few times.

I looked up the dpkg help by typing dpkg --help and still don't kow what it
did, lol, but at least its updating happily so i'm not worried. The last line
in the help file said
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management.
which might be worth trying from the terminal window, if you have further
problems.

[Bug 289918] Re: Regression: Connecting to FreeNX breaks keyboard layout in Intrepid

2008-12-14 Thread Sebastian Urban
NX 3.3.0 on the build queue on my PPA:
 https://edge.launchpad.net/~marceloshima/+archive

1 week of testing before going to freenx-team ppa.
 Needs FreeNX = 0.7.3+svn612-0freenxteam9.

 Let me know your experiences.

I tried the newest version from https://launchpad.net/~freenx-
team/+archive for Hardy.

The bug still exists but the keyboard is now broken in a different way.
For example the right arrow key does not work from Ubuntu 8.10 and Mac
OS X clients. I'm using a german keyboard. MS Windows as client works
fine.

I even tried gconftool-2 --recursive-unset
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd but it did not help.

[Bug 307888] [NEW] keyboard layout is ignored while composing Ctrl-modified keys

2008-12-14 Thread selkovjr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-vte

This bug emerged after upgrading to Intrepid. I did not see it in Hardy.

It manifests itself as incorrect Ctrl-key combinations sent to the shell
in TerminalScreenlet.py

For example, when I press Ctrl-K on my Dvorak keyboard, the shell
receives Ctrl-V.

Reporoducing the bug: run the terminal screenlet with non-US keyboard
layout and examine the Ctrl-modified keys where the layouts differ. The
composed key seen by the client will match the US layout.

Other python-vte apps may show the same bug, but I don't know of any, so
cannot verify. I do not know if it is a vte or python-vte bug either, so
I'm reporting it for python-vte because that's where it shows.

python-vte 1:0.17.4-0ubuntu1
xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu3

Kind of same problem here, I've got music on a Vista partition, I could

stopped working. I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras and it worked for

[Bug 307906] [NEW] Shift-F10 keybinding not in Keyboard Shortcuts preferences editor

2008-12-14 Thread MikeCalder
Public bug reported:

In Intrepid on AMD64 as delivered, the Shift-F10 key combination is bound under
Gnome desktop to bring up a popup menu.
All shortcut key bindings should be in the Keyboard Shortcuts editor under
System preferences, so they can be changed or disabled.
This key binding does not appear in the list so cannot be changed.
This means that this key binding cannot be used in applications which expect to
use it.

[Bug 307751] Re: support comicbook formats: cb7, cba, cbt...

2008-12-14 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I can't reproduce it with the latest evince. Could you please attach a
cb7 file ?

Launchpad is the place to report this kind of request, but support for
other formats in evince is an upstream issue, it would be great if you
could open a report on bugzilla.gnome.org too. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 292504] Re: Use embedded icons for executable files

2008-12-14 Thread Endolith
The original icon should always be displayed, whether Wine is installed
or not, and a dialog will explain that it cannot be run without Wine,
offering a button to install Wine.

If Wine has been installed, it would probably be beneficial to still pop
up something (notification area balloon) to explain that not everything
runs perfectly in Wine, so if your app does nothing on double-click,
you'll need to figure out what's wrong. Maybe the balloon should only
appear if Wine returns an error.

A possibility for emphasizing the use of Wine is to show the program's
icon superimposed on a Wine icon, or vice versa, like a Wine emblem on
top of the original program icon, to indicate that the program will be
launched through Wine.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

[Bug 198628] Re: Hardy Terminal 2.21.92 Unable to disable F10 Hotkey

2008-12-14 Thread Lukas Meier
I had the same issue as Václav:
When disable menu shortcut key (F10) is NOT checked then:
 - F10 activates the menuBAR.
 - Shift+F10 activates the popup menu at the mouse pointer.
When disable menu shortcut key (F10) IS checked then both F10 and Shift+F10
activate the popup menu at the mouse pointer.

I found the following workaround: create a file .gtkrc-2.0 in your
home directory containing:

binding TerminalNoMenu
{
  unbind shiftF10
}
class VteTerminal binding TerminalNoMenu

[Bug 156645] Re: Power button options should include Do Nothing

2008-12-14 Thread Mike Coleman
I also have this problem. In my case, for some reason the power button
is pressed (i.e., not by me) during wakeup from suspend. I could work
around this with a do nothing option, but instead my best alternative
is ask me. This almost works, except that for some reason the dialog
box is either buried or doesn't display until the timeout, at which
point it acts without allowing cancellation.

For me, this feature would be very useful. Barring that, I'd like to
know how to disable the power button completely...

everything(firefox, transmission, gedit, nautilus, etc, etc) is crashing all
the times when reach the open with, and so on dialog, on ro_RO.UTF-8 with the
amd64 architectureso @dread.knight do not waste our time without using

What is the meaning of that?If this bug is only a ro_RO.UTF-8 thing then is not
a bug??

[Bug 307906] Re: Shift-F10 keybinding not in Keyboard Shortcuts preferences editor

2008-12-14 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for your bug report. However, Shift+F10 is configured to
activate the right-click context menu on a per-application basis in
Gnome HIG compliant applications. This doesn't stop non HIG-compliant
applications from using the Shift+F10 combination for other purposes, as
this combination is not actually configured as a global keybinding.

For example, if you press Shift+F10 with the mouse pointer on the
desktop, the Nautilus context menu will appear. If you press Shift+F10
with the mouse cursor in gnome-terminal, then the gnome-terminal context
menu will appear. If you press Shift+F10 in a non Gnome HIG-compliant
application, then it will respond however that application is configured
to respond when pressing this shortcut.

I'm going to close this bug report, as what you've described isn't a
bug. Please feel free to report any other bugs you find.

[Bug 208450] Re: gvfsd-sftp hangs at 100% cpu on sonnecting to some servers

2008-12-14 Thread jenom
I just stumbled across this bug myself and I found the cause. The gvfsd-
sftp uses sftp to connect to the server. I tried to connect directly
this sftp but with no success. The error reported was Received message
too long $NUMBER. Further investigations revealed it was a problem with
the severs shell configuration. For the sftp on ubuntu uses ssh to
connect to the server on some shells text is emitted to the console
(Something like Hello... or whatever even if it is a non-interactive
session). This causes the error above with sftp. In my case I had
screen -r in my shell option without checking if the session was
interactive. After correcting this, sftp worked fine and so did gvfsd-
sftp. No more 100% CPU after this correction. It's still a bug
obviously.

cheers

[Bug 307957] [NEW] brasero crashes when trying to burn a file with a # in its name

2008-12-14 Thread Charon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

This happens to me on:
Ubuntu 8.10

Package Version is:
0.8.2-0ubuntu1

I expected:
Brasero to burn a CD.

What happened:
When you try to burn a data-cd with a file on it which has a filename
containing a # brasero quits with a segmentation fault.

Steps to reproduce :
1. create a new data-project
2. add the file test #555.txt (i attached it to this bug-report. you may try
a different file with a # in its name since it originally crashed on me due
to a different file)
3. click on the burn-button in the lower right corner of brasero
4. you may either chose your cd-burner or an image-file as the destination. its
crashes with both (originally chrashed on me during burning a cd. can be
reproduced with an image-file though). makes no difference if you change any of
the other options here.
5. click the burn-button, it will crash immediately and you don't know where
during the burn process. if this was one file out of many you want to burn you
will see that it crashes during the creation of the checksum for the image-file.

A few of these guidelines to recreate the bug may be a bit off since i
am doing this in a german environment and don't know the proper english
terms.

Re: [Bug 307713] Re: BBC tree UI does not expand

2008-12-14 Thread hendry
Carefully avoided using it? Er, I was using an external mouse!

Ok now I made two further videos with the help of my girlfriend.

This video shows it kinda working. The workaround is pressing enter on
the keyboard:

The second video shows the bug in full force:

[Bug 307960] [NEW] F-Spot fails to update database

2008-12-14 Thread Andreas Sandberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

F-spot version 0.5.0.3-0ubuntu4 fails to import the database from an
earlier F-spot version. The database is renamed and a new empty database
is created instead of upgrading the old one, i.e. all photo tags are
lost.

The f-spot produces the following on stdout/stderr:

[Bug 34247] Re: Trash always empty.

2008-12-14 Thread Gonzo
Let me tell you something interesting...
Well, I can confirm I was also getting this bug on Ubuntu 8.04 and,
surprisingly, today on Ubuntu 8.10...
I did nothing to misconfigure my system actually. I just install NVidia driver
myself using their .run packages from the official site. After installing their
latest BETA 180.16 the gnome-panel trash applet stopped showing its actual
status (when I delete smth. the icon remains empty, but if I click on it - the
deleted stuff is there. Also, the 'Empty trash' link is active.
I decided to uninstall nvidia driver back to previous BETA 180.11 and now it's
ok with the trash applet.
Strange?
Yes.

[Bug 289592] Re: Unknown media types in /usr/share/mime/packages/kde.xml

2008-12-14 Thread Harald Sitter
The issue is really in shared-mime-info, which whines about KDE's fake
mimetypes (it has every right to do that), but should allow us
(distributions) to make it not do that.

Anyway, moving bug to shared-mime-info, adding debian bug and fdo bug.

** Changed in: shared-mime-info (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: kde4libs = shared-mime-info

** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #16816
