[Bug 309607] [NEW] seahorse shows up in Accessories menu instead of System

2008-12-19 Thread Tchalvak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

In Ubuntu intrepid 8.10, the seahorse keyring/password/private key
administrative tool (version 2.24.1-0ubuntu1) shows up under
Applications in the miscellaneous Accessories menu entry with other
random pieces of software, instead of being more logically located in
either SystemPreferences or SystemAdministration

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-12-19 Thread Filippo Argiolas
@everybody:

Please also note that libv4l 0.5.6 has got a nasty bug that prevents uvcvideo
webcams to correctly work.
So the kernel alone is not enough to make Cheese work again.
The new libv4l 0.5.7, with the fix, already went through a SRU and should enter
intrepid-proposed soon (if it didn't yet) (see bug #308890).

So, please, be sure to have an updated libv4l before to comment about
the kernel fix!

Wow, that was you in the video? Nicely done, i thought it had been

Ok, i'm not on a laptop and also have trouble navigating around with the
keyboard but the mouse does work for me. Ahah, it seems that + and -
expand the listed items in the tree-view (or shift arrow-keys) - seems
non-standard but there seems to be good reason. Ok, i can navigate with
my keyboard now but just have to remember how. Is this way working for
you too?

Good luck, have fun and happy christmas :)

[Bug 309674] [NEW] python-gobject in hardy-updates on sparc misbuilt only for python2.5

2008-12-19 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

The version of pygobject in hardy-updates on sparc is misbuilt to supply
only a python2.5 version. This causes ubiquity to fail to build since
python-gtk2 is uninstallable (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20576122
/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-sparc.ubiquity_1.8.13_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz).

The cause of this is timestamp skew in the build; although it currently
happens to apply only to sparc, it could affect any other architecture
in a future build, and therefore should be fixed before it bites us in a
more painful place.

Looking at the pygobject source package in hardy-updates, it includes
the following two patches:

cjwat...@sarantium ~/src/ubuntu/pygobject/pygobject-2.14.2$ diffstat
debian/patches/60_use-python-config-for-includes.patch
 aclocal.m4   |  843 ++-
 configure| 217 ---
 configure.ac |4
 3 files changed, 449 insertions(+), 615 deletions(-)
cjwat...@sarantium ~/src/ubuntu/pygobject/pygobject-2.14.2$ diffstat
debian/patches/61_dont_use_setwakeupfd.patch
 configure| 62 ---
 configure.ac | 20 ---
 2 files changed, 82 deletions(-)

If the second patch happens to be applied sufficiently later (in the
next second) than the first, the standard Automake rules to rebuild
autotools files when they change will note that aclocal.m4 is older than
configure.ac, and will therefore rerun aclocal and autoconf, and
subsequently run ./config.status --recheck. These are run as
subprocesses of make and therefore without the PYTHON environment
variable that debian/rules passes to configure; as a result,
./config.status picks up the default system python (2.5) rather than the
one forced by the PYTHON environment variable (which is 2.4 in the first
build pass). You can see the problem in action by comparing these two
build logs:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15910647/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.pygobject_2.14.2-0ubuntu1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15911262/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-sparc.pygobject_2.14.2-0ubuntu1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz

Possible fixes include: (a) regenerate aclocal.m4 in a later patch
rather than in 60_use-python-config-for-includes.patch; (b) touch
aclocal.m4 and configure after applying patches; (c) set PYTHON when
calling make so that even if ./config.status --recheck is run it will
produce correct results. The versions of pygobject in intrepid and
jaunty do (a) (they contain debian/patches/90_autofoo.patch) and
therefore do not suffer from this problem, although in principle they
might later if the autotools patch were removed.

I am inclined to recommend approach (c) in both hardy-updates and
jaunty, on the basis that it is a more permanent fix.

[Bug 118522] Re: Word wrap is too commonly changed to be in preferences, should be a menu

2008-12-19 Thread Dawid M.
It's great, thanks! :) The only thing it's missing now is to keep
wrapping state after saving changes in a file.

Currently when you save the file text-wrap sets itself to what is
selected in global preferences ignoring what you have chosen for the
file that you're working with.

So every time I do CTRL+S I also have to do CTRL+R (assuming you work
with many text files, and the one you're working with right now has
different word-wrap than what is selected in global prefs).

Anyway, quite nice piece of work. Thanks again ;D

[Bug 72468] Re: Trash looks empty, isn't

2008-12-19 Thread apinunt
I seem to have stumbled across the cause AND solution to my icon problem. After
applying the current recommended updates I had to reboot the system, and at the
login screen I decided to look and see if the Options at login had changed from
7.04 ubuntu. Under Sessions I was offered to use the previous session or change
to another. Although I assumed that I had been using Gnome, I selected Gnome
anyway, and was then asked if I wished to make the change permanent as I had
previously been using Xclient. I was unaware I had been using Xclient and had
not been given a choice previously to select it, but once the Desktop came up I
immediately noticed the Trash icon was showing full, and is now displaying how
many items are contained in the trash when I point to it.
In my case this problem is now cleared, and perhaps some others may benefit
from what I found?

[Bug 309715] [NEW] IBEX desktop random appearance changes

2008-12-19 Thread Timpotten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have the latest (at 19 Dec 2008) updated IBEX 8.10 - kernel
linux2.6.27.9 generic gnome 2.24.1 but also with KDE (probably 4.4.1.3 -
which apps I run in Gnome) Nautilus is 1.2.24.1-0ubuntu

On startup, the desktop appearance is usually the (correct) standard
Ubuntu orange Gnome.

However sometimes it istarts in KDE which has slightly different toolbar
icons and blue folder Icons, but works fine.

Other times it starts Gnome but the desktop image is displayed but with
no folder or disk icons displayed (although both toolbar and apps bar
are displayed correctly and I can still find files using the 'places'
dropdown).

Rebooting usually results in the same wrong configuration. Switch off
and cool down generally works, but both take time.

I did find a post with a Linux command to fix this for the session
which was something like 'stop nautilus' but I can not now find it again
or remember what it was. (I am an experienced user, but no IT training
or skill)

The system has to be shut down every night, and this effect has been
occuring two or three times a week for about one month or so.

This is not a serious bug but quite annoying because Ubuntu does more
than a 'proper computer' that jeering colleagues urge me to buy
(although nobody seems to have a good word for Vista).

2008-12-19 Thread Martin Mai
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in nautilus.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at

libgnomeui/gnome-ditem-edit.h has been removed from libgnome-desktop-2,
this causes the FTBFS with quick-lounge-applet. Upstream bug:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559584

I attempted to resolve this by shipping gnome-ditem-edit.h as a patch
with quick-lounge-applet. I placed it in /src and changed the includes
in the files that call it from:

#include libgnomeui/gnome-ditem-edit.h

to:

#include gnome-ditem-edit.h

This allowed me get past the previous build error, but then I hit this:

[Bug 298188] Re: Cannot open out.pnm

2008-12-19 Thread pvdeynse
have exact same problem under Ubuntu 8.10
I'm using XSane 0.995 to scan a document and save it under the standard format
out.pnm
trying to open this document with eye of gnome (eog) 2.24.1 gives error
message:
PNM loader expected to find an integer, but didn't

the pnm format is supported by the package libimlib2
Ubuntu 8.10 uses the following package: 1.4.0-1.1ubuntu1.1

looking around I've found an updated version 1.4.0-1.2ubuntu1 available under
Ubuntu 9.04 development
installing above package did solve the problem.
package can be installed from here:

[Bug 309767] Re: Calendar entries created by Evolution on Exchange 2003 do not sync to Nokia handset

2008-12-19 Thread Nick Piggott
Created a calendar entry in Evolution, then checked it was visible in
Outlook and Webmail.

Have grabbed two debugs from the phone (attached)

According to the admin_log.txt file attached, the sync noticed that
something had changed in the Calendar, and initiated a sync - but no
changes were made on the phone.

The pdu.txt file seems to indicate a generic Conflict issue, but does
not give any detail.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2008-12-19 Thread Ulrich Lukas
I checked again, and I have to take back my previous statement.
pci=routeirq does not seem to speed up file transfers for my system.
(The KDE4 file transfer progress window seems to provide a not very
conclusive average speed value)

The reason I posted in this bug report is that I believe this actually
is a kernel issue.

I did several measurements copying big files (1.4 GiB Video) with Dolphin,
Konqueror, on the command line using dd and using cp like follows: time (cp
1.4GiB-testfile.mkv /media/disk; sync).
The speed varies between 3MiB/sec and 8 MiB/s.

On another PC with OpenSuse installed, I actually get much higher
average transfer rates, between 12 MiB/s and 15 MiB/s.

On the same PC booting MS Windows, I also get around 14 MiB/s.

[Bug 118522] Re: Word wrap is too commonly changed to be in preferences, should be a menu

2008-12-19 Thread Karl Ostmo
Thanks, Dawid. I tried to reproduce the bug you mention, but for me it
did preserve the wrap settings on my machine after saving.

The sequence of events I tried was:
1) Load a file with long lines. Text wrapping was disabled in my Preferences,
so the initial state was NOWRAP.
2) Pressed CTRL+R. Wrapping state was changed to WRAP.
3) Made a change to the file. Saved with CTRL+S. Wrapping state remained as
WRAP.
4) Pressed CTRL+R again. Wrapping state was changed back to NOWRAP.
5) Made another change to the file. Saved with CTRL+S. Wrapping state
remained as NOWRAP.

Is this not what happens on your machine? If not, maybe you can provide
more details.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-12-19 Thread Guglielmo Cola
after proposed kernel update cheese almost works on my DELL INSPIRON 1520.
- It does not crash anymore
- I can select any resolution but...
If I select 640*480, which should be the webcam native resolution, I just get a
black screen in the cheese window. It does not crash, but it does not work too.
With different resolutions everything is fine.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards

2008-12-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
To those still commenting on this bug, please note that it's marked 'Fix
Released'. No one is tracking this bug report any longer, so any
comments you make here will not be read. Please follow Martin Pitt's
directions in comment #114 and file a new bug.

One of the problems with this bug report is that its title describes a
generic symptom, that can result from a wide array of different
completely unrelated bugs. So everyone thinks they have this same bug
when really they just have a similar symptom. This is why we always ask
people to file bugs separately, and not me too onto another bug, since
you may not have the same bug, and when it gets fixed your issue will
not get investigated.

[Bug 309336] Re: cannot print to network printer in evince

2008-12-19 Thread mia1dolfan
This is conformed and should be a high priority! The cups 12/17/08
updates broke printing broke for me too. Using two different printers,
a HP 4345MFP, and a HP Color Laserjet 3700. Both printers are connected
via Directjet tcp 9100. I tested printing in Evince, Okular, Acrobat
Reader, Firefox, Gimp, gedit. The only thing that would print is the
test page sent to it from 'system-config-printer' applet. I sniffed the
traffic and saw that a complete postscript document from header to
footer was being successfully sent to the printers (by rebuilding TCP
conversation in Wireshark), however no job was processed by the printer.
Creating a new printer did not help. I downgraded the *cups* packages
to the ones installed on 11/28/08 and then I was able to print again.

11/28/08 libcups2-dev_1.3.9-2ubuntu4_i386.deb
11/28/08 libcups2_1.3.9-2ubuntu4_i386.deb

11/28/08 libcupsys2-dev_1.3.9-2ubuntu4_all.deb
11/28/08 cupsys-bsd_1.3.9-2ubuntu4_all.deb

This is the set of commands I ran to downgrade...

cd /var/cache/apt/archives
sudo apt-get remove cups-bsd # Dependency problem if not removed first
find -name '*cups*\.deb' -printf '%AD %f\n' | grep 11/28/08 | cut -d\ -f2 |
sudo xargs -i{} dpkg -i {}
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

[Bug 252253] Re: Cannot set a custom Mail Reader in Preferred Applications capplet

2008-12-19 Thread NoOp
Perhaps this is an update-manager issue, but seems related:

In hardy I have the following set for Custom Browser:

/usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey -remote openURL(%s,new-tab)
[note] this is so that I can open the update manager URL's in a new SeaMonkey
tab]

and for Custom Email

/usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey -compose

Both work just fine in hardy.

However, if I do the same in Intrepid, (clicking on the bug report in
Update Manager) Firefox opens instead.

In Intrepid, clicking a URL in OpenOffice does open a new tab in
SeaMonkey. Sending as an email in OpenOffice does open the SeaMonkey
email compose window.

It seems that some applications can/do override the Preferred
Application settngs.

[Bug 299653] [NEW] automatically mirror displays to the larger resolution when connecting an external monitor

2008-12-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In Ubuntu 8.04, after attaching an external monitor and pressing the
detect displays special key sequence (fn-F7) on my Lenovo X61s, the
external monitor would immediately display a mirror of the laptop's
monitor, at the native resolution of the external monitor.

While Ubuntu 8.10 offers more flexibility in its configuration, it has
eliminated this sensible default. Now, when connecting an external
monitor, I must manually go to System - Preferences - Screen
Resolution and manually enable and choose a resolution for the external
monitor.

Additionally, Ubuntu 8.10 now restricts mirrored external resolution to
the internal monitor's resolution. I am limited to the smaller of the
two resolutions, so to use the external monitor at native resolution
with a non-extended desktop, I must manually enable the external monitor
in non-mirroring mode, select its appropriate resolution, and disable
the laptop's internal screen. Before unplugging the external monitor, I
must re-enable the internal display, or I will be left without a display
(8.10 does not automatically turn the internal monitor back on when
unplugging a display).

While keeping the new flexibility in extended desktops, Ubuntu should
return to the default behavior from 8.04 of automatically mirroring
displays to the larger resolution when connecting an external monitor,
and automatically returning to the normal laptop screen resolution when
the monitor is unplugged.

[Bug 299653] Re: Hotkey fn+f7 on Lenovo X61 does not enable external monitor

2008-12-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
It sounds like you have two separate issues. One, that the hotkey
sequence no longer works. Two, the behavior of the Screen Resolution
applet with mirroring has changed. The first issue I think is fairly
widely known and plans are afoot to solve it (see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys), so let's focus your bug report to the
second issue. It sounds like it is logic in the Screen Resolution tool
that is selecting improper values for the two screens. I'll reassign to
g-c-c for further analysis.

- external monitor defaults regression in Ubuntu 8.10 (Lenovo X61s)

[Bug 301517] Re: solitaire game will not permit legal moves

2008-12-19 Thread black_whispers
Hi there.

I understand what you mean; it is impossible to recreate this exact
scenario; solitaire is built not to be the same every time.

However, after playing five games, this bug is still not confirmed. Each
time I had enough cards in a stack, I moved them across and had no
problems.

The hint system seems to rely on luck a bit ('Deal a new card from the
deck' three times in a row means you will still probably lose.

Please run the following command;
sudo apt-get remove gnome-games sudo apt-get install gnome-games

This will do a clean reinstall of the gnome-games package. Please try
this, and try to recreate the problem again, and then notify us of the
result.

Thanks

Joseph

[Bug 309884] [NEW] deleting a module that is in use locks up terminal

2008-12-19 Thread duffrecords
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I tried to delete a module but forgot to rmmod it first. The instance
of gnome-terminal I was using became unresponsive. I opened up another
terminal and tried to kill -9 the frozen bash process; this caused the
second terminal to freeze as well. Then I used xkill to kill both
terminals--it seemed to work, but I could not open a new terminal after
that. Also, I could no longer switch to a tty shell using Ctrl-Alt-
Fkey. I tried to reboot at this point, and it reported that Terminal
was not responding. The reboot process froze before X could be shut
down.

Now, I know what you're thinking; I shouldn't try to delete a module
that's in use. It was an accident, but it should have resulted in an
error message rather than rendering bash useless and requiring a hard
reboot.

Ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 309888] [NEW] Power management causes stuck mouse pointer on certain SDL games with Intel GPU

2008-12-19 Thread Amy Brodzik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On my Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 0c), the mouse pointer gets stuck in the middle of the
screen and can't be moved when playing certain SDL games like Kobo
Deluxe, Heroes, Secret Maryo Chronicles in full screen. The only way to
fix the problem is to disable power management (via the inhibitor panel
applet) or killing the daemon.

The bug mainly seems to affect SDL games that don't use the mouse.

[Bug 158292] Re: Bottom task bar moves up an inch when I connect to external video/projector

2008-12-19 Thread Bryce Harrington

[This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
 https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
 See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:
