[Bug 309674] [NEW] python-gobject in hardy-updates on sparc misbuilt only for python2.5
Public bug reported: The version of pygobject in hardy-updates on sparc is misbuilt to supply only a python2.5 version. This causes ubiquity to fail to build since python-gtk2 is uninstallable (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20576122 /buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-sparc.ubiquity_1.8.13_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz). The cause of this is timestamp skew in the build; although it currently happens to apply only to sparc, it could affect any other architecture in a future build, and therefore should be fixed before it bites us in a more painful place. Looking at the pygobject source package in hardy-updates, it includes the following two patches: cjwat...@sarantium ~/src/ubuntu/pygobject/pygobject-2.14.2$ diffstat debian/patches/60_use-python-config-for-includes.patch aclocal.m4 | 843 ++- configure| 217 --- configure.ac |4 3 files changed, 449 insertions(+), 615 deletions(-) cjwat...@sarantium ~/src/ubuntu/pygobject/pygobject-2.14.2$ diffstat debian/patches/61_dont_use_setwakeupfd.patch configure| 62 --- configure.ac | 20 --- 2 files changed, 82 deletions(-) If the second patch happens to be applied sufficiently later (in the next second) than the first, the standard Automake rules to rebuild autotools files when they change will note that aclocal.m4 is older than configure.ac, and will therefore rerun aclocal and autoconf, and subsequently run ./config.status --recheck. These are run as subprocesses of make and therefore without the PYTHON environment variable that debian/rules passes to configure; as a result, ./config.status picks up the default system python (2.5) rather than the one forced by the PYTHON environment variable (which is 2.4 in the first build pass). You can see the problem in action by comparing these two build logs: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15910647/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.pygobject_2.14.2-0ubuntu1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15911262/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-sparc.pygobject_2.14.2-0ubuntu1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz Possible fixes include: (a) regenerate aclocal.m4 in a later patch rather than in 60_use-python-config-for-includes.patch; (b) touch aclocal.m4 and configure after applying patches; (c) set PYTHON when calling make so that even if ./config.status --recheck is run it will produce correct results. The versions of pygobject in intrepid and jaunty do (a) (they contain debian/patches/90_autofoo.patch) and therefore do not suffer from this problem, although in principle they might later if the autotools patch were removed. I am inclined to recommend approach (c) in both hardy-updates and jaunty, on the basis that it is a more permanent fix. ** Affects: pygobject (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: New ** Affects: pygobject (Ubuntu Hardy) Importance: Critical Status: New ** Changed in: pygobject (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Critical ** Changed in: pygobject (Ubuntu Hardy) Importance: Undecided = Critical ** Changed in: pygobject (Ubuntu) Importance: Critical = High -- python-gobject in hardy-updates on sparc misbuilt only for python2.5 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to pygobject in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 118522] Re: Word wrap is too commonly changed to be in preferences, should be a menu
It's great, thanks! :) The only thing it's missing now is to keep wrapping state after saving changes in a file. Currently when you save the file text-wrap sets itself to what is selected in global preferences ignoring what you have chosen for the file that you're working with. So every time I do CTRL+S I also have to do CTRL+R (assuming you work with many text files, and the one you're working with right now has different word-wrap than what is selected in global prefs). [Bug 309715] [NEW] IBEX desktop random appearance changes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I have the latest (at 19 Dec 2008) updated IBEX 8.10 - kernel linux2.6.27.9 generic gnome 2.24.1 but also with KDE (probably 4.4.1.3 - which apps I run in Gnome) Nautilus is 1.2.24.1-0ubuntu On startup, the desktop appearance is usually the (correct) standard Ubuntu orange Gnome. However sometimes it istarts in KDE which has slightly different toolbar icons and blue folder Icons, but works fine. Other times it starts Gnome but the desktop image is displayed but with no folder or disk icons displayed (although both toolbar and apps bar are displayed correctly and I can still find files using the 'places' dropdown). Rebooting usually results in the same wrong configuration. Switch off and cool down generally works, but both take time. I did find a post with a Linux command to fix this for the session which was something like 'stop nautilus' but I can not now find it again or remember what it was. (I am an experienced user, but no IT training or skill) The system has to be shut down every night, and this effect has been occuring two or three times a week for about one month or so. This is not a serious bug but quite annoying because Ubuntu does more than a 'proper computer' that jeering colleagues urge me to buy (although nobody seems to have a good word for Vista). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- IBEX desktop random appearance changes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309715 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in nautilus. For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. [Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
I checked again, and I have to take back my previous statement. pci=routeirq does not seem to speed up file transfers for my system. (The KDE4 file transfer progress window seems to provide a not very conclusive average speed value) The reason I posted in this bug report is that I believe this actually is a kernel issue. I did several measurements copying big files (1.4 GiB Video) with Dolphin, Konqueror, on the command line using dd and using cp like follows: time (cp 1.4GiB-testfile.mkv /media/disk; sync). The speed varies between 3MiB/sec and 8 MiB/s. On another PC with OpenSuse installed, I actually get much higher average transfer rates, between 12 MiB/s and 15 MiB/s. Please follow Martin Pitt's directions in comment #114 and file a new bug. One of the problems with this bug report is that its title describes a generic symptom, that can result from a wide array of different completely unrelated bugs. So everyone thinks they have this same bug when really they just have a similar symptom. This is why we always ask people to file bugs separately, and not me too onto another bug, since you may not have the same bug, and when it gets fixed your issue will not get investigated. -- Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259385 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to yelp in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This is conformed and should be a high priority! The cups 12/17/08 updates broke printing broke for me too. Using two different printers, a HP 4345MFP, and a HP Color Laserjet 3700. Both printers are connected via Directjet tcp 9100. I tested printing in Evince, Okular, Acrobat Reader, Firefox, Gimp, gedit. [Bug 299653] [NEW] automatically mirror displays to the larger resolution when connecting an external monitor
You have been subscribed to a public bug: In Ubuntu 8.04, after attaching an external monitor and pressing the detect displays special key sequence (fn-F7) on my Lenovo X61s, the external monitor would immediately display a mirror of the laptop's monitor, at the native resolution of the external monitor. While Ubuntu 8.10 offers more flexibility in its configuration, it has eliminated this sensible default. Now, when connecting an external monitor, I must manually go to System - Preferences - Screen Resolution and manually enable and choose a resolution for the external monitor. Additionally, Ubuntu 8.10 now restricts mirrored external resolution to the internal monitor's resolution. I am limited to the smaller of the two resolutions, so to use the external monitor at native resolution with a non-extended desktop, I must manually enable the external monitor in non-mirroring mode, select its appropriate resolution, and disable the laptop's internal screen. Before unplugging the external monitor, I must re-enable the internal display, or I will be left without a display (8.10 does not automatically turn the internal monitor back on when unplugging a display). While keeping the new flexibility in extended desktops, Ubuntu should return to the default behavior from 8.04 of automatically mirroring displays to the larger resolution when connecting an external monitor, and automatically returning to the normal laptop screen resolution when the monitor is unplugged. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- automatically mirror displays to the larger resolution when connecting an external monitor https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/299653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 299653] Re: Hotkey fn+f7 on Lenovo X61 does not enable external monitor
It sounds like you have two separate issues. One, that the hotkey sequence no longer works. Two, the behavior of the Screen Resolution applet with mirroring has changed. The first issue I think is fairly widely known and plans are afoot to solve it (see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys), so let's focus your bug report to the second issue. It sounds like it is logic in the Screen Resolution tool that is selecting improper values for the two screens. Is there any way to configure g-p-m to use the former value, or is this something set in the code? -- g-p-m doesn't save charge and discharge profiles https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/302570 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 301517] Re: solitaire game will not permit legal moves
Hi there. I understand what you mean; it is impossible to recreate this exact scenario; solitaire is built not to be the same every time. However, after playing five games, this bug is still not confirmed. Each time I had enough cards in a stack, I moved them across and had no problems. The hint system seems to rely on luck a bit ('Deal a new card from the deck' three times in a row means you will still probably lose. Please run the following command; sudo apt-get remove gnome-games sudo apt-get install gnome-games This will do a clean reinstall of the gnome-games package. Please try this, and try to recreate the problem again, and then notify us of the result. Thanks Joseph -- solitaire game will not permit legal moves https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301517 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 309884] [NEW] deleting a module that is in use locks up terminal
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal I tried to delete a module but forgot to rmmod it first. The instance of gnome-terminal I was using became unresponsive. I opened up another terminal and tried to kill -9 the frozen bash process; this caused the second terminal to freeze as well. Then I used xkill to kill both terminals--it seemed to work, but I could not open a new terminal after that. Also, I could no longer switch to a tty shell using Ctrl-Alt- Fkey. I tried to reboot at this point, and it reported that Terminal was not responding. The reboot process froze before X could be shut down. Now, I know what you're thinking; I shouldn't try to delete a module that's in use. It was an accident, but it should have resulted in an error message rather than rendering bash useless and requiring a hard reboot. Ubuntu 8.10 gnome-terminal 2.24.1.1-0ubuntu1 The module I tried to delete was gspca_ov511.ko. ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- deleting a module that is in use locks up terminal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 309888] [NEW] Power management causes stuck mouse pointer on certain SDL games with Intel GPU
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager On my Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c), the mouse pointer gets stuck in the middle of the screen and can't be moved when playing certain SDL games like Kobo Deluxe, Heroes, Secret Maryo Chronicles in full screen. The only way to fix the problem is to disable power management (via the inhibitor panel applet) or killing the daemon. The bug mainly seems to affect SDL games that don't use the mouse. I am using Ubuntu Intrepid with GNOME 2.24 as the desktop. The package version I'm using is 2.24.0-0ubuntu8.1 ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Power management causes stuck mouse pointer on certain SDL games with Intel GPU https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309888 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 158292] Re: Bottom task bar moves up an inch when I connect to external video/projector
[This is an automatic notice.] We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires that you first test it against their newer driver code. To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built packages for the driver and its new dependencies. So you have a couple options: 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from: https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive -or- 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD, (which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well). See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your findings. P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow these directions to do so: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Incomplete -- Bottom task bar moves up an inch when I connect to external video/projector https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
