[Bug 318110] [NEW] gdm is not started

2009-01-17 Thread rajesh
Public bug reported:

I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till 2
days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started.
I have checked in the forums and confirm that:
dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.*

The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time
(around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were
no [OK] for the hal daemon.

Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof
hal returns no pids.

P.S: Also, my eth0 is not detected. I am not able to use internet to
post the logs from there. If information is provided regarding how to
enable network from text mode, it will be fine to give more details from
linux system. Currently I have to reboot the system to post the bugs.

Thanks,
Rajesh.S

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher

2009-01-17 Thread era
Lincoln: can you be a little bit more specific? If you disable the AT
stuff in the Session manager, does that cause the problem to go away?

(System - Preferences - Sessions - Startup Programs tab -- the ones
which seem relevant are the AT-SPI Registry Wrapper [no idea what it
does, but AT-SPI is the accessibility voodoo], and Visual Assistance. I
would place my bets on the first one.)

[Bug 295990] Re: Keyboard layout reset after attaching USB keyboard

2009-01-17 Thread Anders Olsson
That sound's related to my problem that I described above. I remember
messing around with keyboard settings in gconf-editor, and I think it
was something I changed in kbd.sysbackup that made a difference, just
use the search function in gconf-editor to find it. Now everything works
for me, external and internal keyboard. Maybe you can try it and post
your results.

[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs

2009-01-17 Thread era
This may seem like a feeble accomplishment, but I managed to find out
what AT-SPI means, and so might be able to figure out what AT-SPI
Registry Wrapper means.

According to http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/atk.php#coreclasses
AT-SPI is Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface and there
are also descriptions of the architecture etc.

Funny that an accessibility / usability component would make the mistake
of having a name which is completely undecipherable to the uninitiated,
and no description (as of 8.10).

/usr/lib/gnome-session/helpers/at-spi-registryd-wrapper and the
corresponding /usr/share/gnome/autostart/at-spi-registryd-
wrapper.desktop are in the gnome-session package, so marking as New
for gnome-session (or should I Be Bold and mark as Confirmed?)

My proposed fix would be to add the English description Framework for
applications to interact with assistive technologies. I would be
tempted to say Gnome applications or even GTK+ applications but
ironically, the usability folks tend to shoot down anything which
involves a technical acronym (but then the name field is barely anything
but a technical acronym).

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher

I can confirm this. If I go to
System - Preferences - Assistive technologies
and uncheck the Enabe assistive technologies button, My Emacs (snapshot-gtk)

The window switch is still perceptibly slower than for other apps
though.

[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs

2009-01-17 Thread era
There's a bunch of weird things in Startup Programs in Session Preferences
in Intrepid. Should I post them here, or create a new bug? This bug report is
rather unwieldy as it is, so perhaps it would be better to create a new one
 for Intrepid.

I never got a reply, so at least I'm enumerating here what I think is
wrong.

(Format is Name[en] - Description[en] - my comments.)

AT SPI Registry Wrapper - No description - noted above

Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Manager applet - package bluez-gnome, adding
New
The description is completely redundant after you remove applet which as
noted elsewhere in this bug report is not recommended. Please describe what it
does for the user. Suggest Enable wireless connections to Bluetooth devices
such as mobile phones or some such. (Too long, admittedly, but then maybe the
UI should be changed to accommodate longer descriptions.)

Evolution Alarm Notifier - Evolution Alarm Notifier - noted above

GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - No description - package gnome-
session, should have a description. Allow applications to access the
keyring perhaps?

GNOME Login Sound - No description - I guess we can live with this :-)
Or should it say Boing bling thud ksh?

GNOME Settings Daemon - No description - package gnome-settings-
daemon, adding New. Manage your GNOME session's settings maybe?

GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - No description - now this I think has
a more fundamental problem. Are there situations where you would want
to run the helper but not the daemon itself, or vice versa? Should that
be expressed as a preference in the daemon's settings somewhere instead
then? IMHO this is exposing an implementation boundary which should not
be exposed to the user.

GNOME Splash Screen - No description - gnome-session. As with the
sound above I guess, not really crucial to describe.

Network Manager - Network Manager applet - as per Gabor Kelemen's
comment above, already fixed upstream

PulseAudio Session Manager - Load module-x11-xsmp into PulseAudio -
package pulseaudio-module-x11, adding New. Wayyy too technical
description.

Window Manager - No description - package gnome-session. I can't
help but think this is also a detail which normal users would never want
control over.

[Bug 318128] [NEW] copy file window is hanging with a FTP with limited number of connections per user

2009-01-17 Thread ktulu77
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hi.
I am on ubuntu 9.04 amd64. (but I remember this bug also happened on 8.10)

This is what I did : I connected Nautilus to a FTP (ftperso.free.fr)
I right click on a file and copy it on my desktop.

- the copy operation window stay opened and is hanging.

- If I click on the stop button, the button becomes disabled but
nothing happens, the transfert is not canceled.

For now, the file operation window is hanging for 10 minutes.

What I know is that on ftpperso.free.fr, only one or two connections are
allowed per user at the same time (I am not sure).

I think there is 2 thingst to investigate : Perhaps no timeout has been
configured on ftp operations ?
The thread which connect to the server cannot be interrupted by the Thread UI ?

I am not sure is this problem is from nautilus or gvfs. On which sources
should I take a look ?

[Bug 318130] [NEW] Horizontal lines appear on blue background on pdf

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

We have a pdf file exported from Open Office Impress. The background is blue
and there are horizontal lines through the image. The lines vary somewhat in
colour, going from white to the blue.
If the slide show is made in OO Impress, all is well (showing that this isn't a

[Bug 312692] Re: Launching gnome-terminal on start up, no title bar appears

2009-01-17 Thread lupv
Actually it just happened when I set xclock to launch on start-up.
Previously xclock appeared (near top of screen but nearer to the center)
with no problems but then when it appeared in the top left corner, it's
title bar was obscured and again could not move it.

The problem seems to be where (and possibly in what order) gnome chooses
to launch the applications. If the ui appears in the top left corner,
then it's title bar can get obscured, although firefox launches ok.

So a possible fix could be a matter of setting where the ui should
appear e.g. in a script. I would appreciate it anyone has any info how
why this is and possible fixes. Thanks.

[Bug 267828] Re: switch user does not work

2009-01-17 Thread stek79
Hi,
same problem here.

Here are the steps to reproduce it:

1) boot the system
2) login with user A
3) choose user B from the user switcher applet

Bang, the error comes out. Note that it happens only the first time
after boot, subsequent switch between users work correctly.

[Bug 270394] Re: Segfault when starting MMS stream

2009-01-17 Thread Chrescht

I just rebooted Ubuntu (8.04). Now my mms radio stream works flawlessly in
rhythmbox.

The first time I tried to run a mms stream rhythmbox asked to install the
following GStreamer package:
GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack (GStreamer plugins from
the bad set)

After the install, I did NOT reboot since I didn't think it to be
necessary...

So now I am free of this bug now.. :-)

[Bug 318150] [NEW] File-roller creates 2 subdirectories when 2 archives contain same root directory.

2009-01-17 Thread DGMcCloud
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

When you have 2 archives which contain the same root directory, file-roller
creates 2 sub-directories when choosing 'Extract Here'. Example: Say we have
got 2 archives, 'archive1.zip' and 'archive2.zip'. 'archive1.zip. contains:
- /archive/disk1/file1.txt

'archive2.zip' contains:
- /archive/disk2/file2.txt

Now, when selecting both files and clicking 'Extract Here' , one would expect
that the expanded archives would like this
/archive
 /disk1/file1.txt
 /disk2/file2.txt

File-roller creates the following structure:
/archiva/disk1/file1.txt
/archive (2)/disk2/file2.txt

This is rather annoying when you've got a number of archives, each
representing a separate installation disk, which reside in the same root
dir.

[Bug 306363] [NEW] Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello, I found a problem trying to change the brightness of my laptop
Dell Inspiron 2200 on Intrepid Ibex using brightness hotkeys (all
hotkeys seem to work properly except the brightness hotkeys).

When I press these hotkeys, the screen brightness changes correctly, but
the brightness dialog appears with a progress bar that goes to the
maximum or minimum value, no matter how many times I press the
corresponding hotkey. After that, the dialog stays visible for a long
time (or it simply stays forever) and locks the keyboard until I
change current terminal with ctrl-alt-FX and return to graphical
terminal.

These hotkeys were working properly on 8.04, and I upgraded to 8.10 from the
Internet (not a fresh install, only upgraded).
I have the latest BIOS for Inspiron 2200. I have read about related bugs in
other models. In power manager options, I have unchecked the option dim screen
when idle in ac configuration (this was a possible reason in other models
having the same or a smilar problem). I tried also removing xorg.conf
configuration file, the problem persists.

Brightness hotkeys in Inspiron are Fn+UpArrow or Fn+DownArrow.

Thank you for your help!

the symptoms:

1. When I press Fn+Home/End to increase/decrease brightness, the brightness

2. After changing the brightness, the screen progressively goes darker
3. Pressing the Fn+Home key to adjust brightness is very intermittent, sometime
it works, sometime it does not work

What I expect to happen:
   a) Brightness to be adjusted automatically to preset brightness when laptop
does not have AC power
   b) Fn+Home/End to adjust brightness to function in a stable fashion. It
worked well in 8.04
   c) brightness chaging applet to be responsive

[Bug 306363] Re: Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200

2009-01-17 Thread Marc_dm
Also affected on : Inspiron 9400

Problems :
The pop-up notification stays forever on top of all windows till ctrl-alt-FX
trick
The gnome interface is partly locked while the notification stays up : by this
i mean
- most mouse interaction with the gnome panels is blocked (no starting
paplication through buttons, highlight of menus but no display or acess to menu
context)
- keyboard is mainly locked : ctrl-alt-FX still works, but only reset the
display instead of going to the selected terminal

Whereas following functions work
- The brightness setting through Fn+Up or Fn+Down works (brightness setup +
progress bar displaying actual state)
- the mouse is free
- mouse interaction with desktop icons OK
- mouse interaction with already launched applications is OK

problem may be linked to gnome-power-manager as the brightness setting
is part of it -- bug linked

data on my system :
Linux 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

[Bug 112684] Re: F-Spot deletes temporary image files too early when sending mails

2009-01-17 Thread swulf
This bug is still in issue in Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex) and with F-Spot (f-spot
0.5.0.3). I am not opening another bug report as it is basically the
same issue as reported in this one.

The temporary folder F-Spot creates (in /tmp in my case) disappears
automatically after a short while. When Thunderbird comes to look for it
to send the mail, it fails as it no longer exists. This makes it
practically impossible to send an image as email via Thunderbird using
this F-Spot feature.

Further, using the Configuration Editor 2.24.1 for gconf shows that
there is no '/apps/f-spot/export/email/delete_timeout_seconds' key
present by default. Configuration Editor shows
'/apps/f-spot/export/email' contains only the keys 'auto_rotate' and
'size'. Should this key be created manually?

[Bug 306363] Re: Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200

2009-01-17 Thread Marc_dm
strongly related problem : from Bug #281651

and retested on my configuration :
while a menu from a gnome desktop bar is open, using the brightness hotkey will
:
- correctly modify the brightness setting
- but NOT show the notification and the progress bar

when closing the described menu afterwards, the brightness notification
bar shows up, and i end up in the same locked situation as described 2
posts up. -- for this reason i mark the Bug #281651 also as duplicate
of this one

The problem seems mainly to come from the way gnome-power-manager
handles this notification, and that it hangs on it afterwards..

[Bug 318189] [NEW] Add support for SPSS PSPP formats

2009-01-17 Thread bojo42
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

SPSS is a proprietary program to analyze statistical data, mostly used
by social sciences. Since version 16.0 this app finally gained linux
support. On the free side we have a clone called PSPP that aims for
compatibility and is in universe.

Sadly the formats used by those apps are not correctly detected by
Ubuntu, means there seems to be no mime types for them. So you can work
with SPSS or PSPP, but you can't associate the produced file types to
them. Therefore we should fix that for a overall better support for
those files important to many social scientists. This would ease
migration from Windoze for this kind of people.

The files are:
.sav - native data format
.por - portable data format
.sps - syntax format
.spv - output format (new introduced with SPSS 16.0, the old format was .spo)

[Bug 312511] [NEW] Master channel fails in Ubuntu 8.10

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Ubuntu 8.10 just installed in HP Compaq nx6110, audio card Intel
Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller
(rev 03).

Setting master channel to 0% does not completely silence (very low
sound, but not silence) unless PCM is also set to 0% (or muted). In the
same way, setting 0% on PCM does not completely silence unless Master is
also at 0% or muted. Muting on both channels is working.

Tried mostly with Device Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer), but also happens with
the others.

This did not happen in a previous installation of Kubuntu 8.10 in this
same laptop.

This is the only issue with sound I have detected in my installation up

2009-01-17 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 301744] [NEW] [intrepid] screen brightness keys act very slowly

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I press Fn+Home on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61, I expect the brightness
to go up a step, and I expect the OSD to show that change.

What actually happens, is that the brightness goes up a step, the OSD
pops up, and then there's a pause of exactly 1 second, after which the
brightness goes up another step and the OSD hides. If I hit Fn-Home a
few times, there's a 1 second pause between each step, which makes it
rather irritating when you want to go up from 50% to 100% or back. Fn-
End, which reduces the brightness, has the same delay.

This is a regression since Hardy, where the volume keys worked fine with
no pauses.

It could be a duplicate of #286102, except that I don't see the OSD
reverting to a previous brightness level, and I haven't seen this bug in
Hardy.

Here's the other information requested in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch:

m...@platonas:~ $ sudo dmidecode -s system-manufacturer
LENOVO
m...@platonas:~ $ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
646655G
m...@platonas:~ $ sudo dmidecode -s system-version
ThinkPad T61

The key that Fn-Home sends is XF86MonBrightnessUp, according to GNOME
key bindings preferences, and it appears after that 1 second pause.
(Fn-End sends XF86MonBrightnessDown). /var/log/acpid doesn't show any
ACPI events being sent when I press those keys.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid on my Sony Vaio VGN T250P and am
experiencing the following serious problems:

1) The screen brightness dims by itself and gets progressively darker and

2)Then I try to use the Fn + F6 key combination to increase screen brightness

[Bug 318150] Re: File-roller creates 2 subdirectories when 2 archives contain same root directory.

2009-01-17 Thread DGMcCloud
Well, the behavior is different from when opening the files with Archive
Manager (File-Roller) and choosing Extract - Extract (in the default
directory, i.e. where the archive is located). In that case, the directory
structure created is the one expected, i.e.:
/archive
/disk1/file1.txt
/disk2/file2.txt

So the behavior differs whether one uses Extract Here in Nautilus or
opens the archives with File-Roller.

I'm opening a bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org .

The bug is reproducible everytime.
There's another bug concerning gnome-volume-control already being run by

Also you might notice Exaile is running. The bug also occurs when no

[Bug 315922] Re: 2.6.27-11 makes brightness not work

2009-01-17 Thread Dana Goyette
I'm on Jaunty, and the latest 2.6.28-4.10 generic x86-64 kernel entirely
removes my ability to change brightness levels; the previous kernel
works perfectly.

Under the old kernel, /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness returns this:
levels: 100 51 30 37 44 51 58 65 72 79 86 93 100
current: 100

Under the new kernel, it returns this:
not supported

Under the old kernel, HAL uses /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 to
control brightness; under the new kernel, the /sys/class/backlight
directory is completely empty.

I believe the fix for the reversed brightness bug (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/311716 ) is most
likely what broke my brightness control. Also note this comment in that
bug description: Risks: as we are supressing ACPI brightness support we
may suppress it where it is required
