[Bug 318110] [NEW] gdm is not started
Public bug reported: I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till 2 days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started. I have checked in the forums and confirm that: dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.* The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time (around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were no [OK] for the hal daemon. Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof hal returns no pids. P.S: Also, my eth0 is not detected. I am not able to use internet to post the logs from there. If information is provided regarding how to enable network from text mode, it will be fine to give more details from linux system. Currently I have to reboot the system to post the bugs. [Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs
This may seem like a feeble accomplishment, but I managed to find out what AT-SPI means, and so might be able to figure out what AT-SPI Registry Wrapper means. According to http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/atk.php#coreclasses AT-SPI is Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface and there are also descriptions of the architecture etc. Funny that an accessibility / usability component would make the mistake of having a name which is completely undecipherable to the uninitiated, and no description (as of 8.10). /usr/lib/gnome-session/helpers/at-spi-registryd-wrapper and the corresponding /usr/share/gnome/autostart/at-spi-registryd- wrapper.desktop are in the gnome-session package, so marking as New for gnome-session (or should I Be Bold and mark as Confirmed?) My proposed fix would be to add the English description Framework for applications to interact with assistive technologies. I would be tempted to say Gnome applications or even GTK+ applications but ironically, the usability folks tend to shoot down anything which involves a technical acronym (but then the name field is barely anything but a technical acronym). ** Changed in: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- poor descriptions for some startup programs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs
There's a bunch of weird things in Startup Programs in Session Preferences in Intrepid. Should I post them here, or create a new bug? This bug report is rather unwieldy as it is, so perhaps it would be better to create a new one for Intrepid. I never got a reply, so at least I'm enumerating here what I think is wrong. (Format is Name[en] - Description[en] - my comments.) AT SPI Registry Wrapper - No description - noted above Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Manager applet - package bluez-gnome, adding New The description is completely redundant after you remove applet which as noted elsewhere in this bug report is not recommended. Please describe what it does for the user. Suggest Enable wireless connections to Bluetooth devices such as mobile phones or some such. (Too long, admittedly, but then maybe the UI should be changed to accommodate longer descriptions.) Evolution Alarm Notifier - Evolution Alarm Notifier - noted above GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - No description - package gnome- session, should have a description. Allow applications to access the keyring perhaps? GNOME Login Sound - No description - I guess we can live with this :-) Or should it say Boing bling thud ksh? GNOME Settings Daemon - No description - package gnome-settings- daemon, adding New. Manage your GNOME session's settings maybe? GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - No description - now this I think has a more fundamental problem. Are there situations where you would want to run the helper but not the daemon itself, or vice versa? Should that be expressed as a preference in the daemon's settings somewhere instead then? IMHO this is exposing an implementation boundary which should not be exposed to the user. GNOME Splash Screen - No description - gnome-session. As with the sound above I guess, not really crucial to describe. Network Manager - Network Manager applet - as per Gabor Kelemen's comment above, already fixed upstream PulseAudio Session Manager - Load module-x11-xsmp into PulseAudio - package pulseaudio-module-x11, adding New. Wayyy too technical description. Window Manager - No description - package gnome-session. I can't help but think this is also a detail which normal users would never want control over. ** Also affects: network-manager via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559636 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Also affects: bluez-gnome (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- poor descriptions for some startup programs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 312692] Re: Launching gnome-terminal on start up, no title bar appears
Actually it just happened when I set xclock to launch on start-up. Previously xclock appeared (near top of screen but nearer to the center) with no problems but then when it appeared in the top left corner, it's title bar was obscured and again could not move it. The problem seems to be where (and possibly in what order) gnome chooses to launch the applications. If the ui appears in the top left corner, then it's title bar can get obscured, although firefox launches ok. So a possible fix could be a matter of setting where the ui should appear e.g. in a script. I would appreciate it anyone has any info how why this is and possible fixes. [Bug 306363] [NEW] Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hello, I found a problem trying to change the brightness of my laptop Dell Inspiron 2200 on Intrepid Ibex using brightness hotkeys (all hotkeys seem to work properly except the brightness hotkeys). When I press these hotkeys, the screen brightness changes correctly, but the brightness dialog appears with a progress bar that goes to the maximum or minimum value, no matter how many times I press the corresponding hotkey. After that, the dialog stays visible for a long time (or it simply stays forever) and locks the keyboard until I change current terminal with ctrl-alt-FX and return to graphical terminal. These hotkeys were working properly on 8.04, and I upgraded to 8.10 from the Internet (not a fresh install, only upgraded). I have the latest BIOS for Inspiron 2200. I have read about related bugs in other models. In power manager options, I have unchecked the option dim screen when idle in ac configuration (this was a possible reason in other models having the same or a smilar problem). I tried also removing xorg.conf configuration file, the problem persists. Brightness hotkeys in Inspiron are Fn+UpArrow or Fn+DownArrow. This bug is still in issue in Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex) and with F-Spot (f-spot 0.5.0.3). I am not opening another bug report as it is basically the same issue as reported in this one. The temporary folder F-Spot creates (in /tmp in my case) disappears automatically after a short while. When Thunderbird comes to look for it to send the mail, it fails as it no longer exists. This makes it practically impossible to send an image as email via Thunderbird using this F-Spot feature. Further, using the Configuration Editor 2.24.1 for gconf shows that there is no '/apps/f-spot/export/email/delete_timeout_seconds' key present by default. Configuration Editor shows '/apps/f-spot/export/email' contains only the keys 'auto_rotate' and 'size'. [Bug 318189] [NEW] Add support for SPSS PSPP formats
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: shared-mime-info SPSS is a proprietary program to analyze statistical data, mostly used by social sciences. Since version 16.0 this app finally gained linux support. On the free side we have a clone called PSPP that aims for compatibility and is in universe. Sadly the formats used by those apps are not correctly detected by Ubuntu, means there seems to be no mime types for them. So you can work with SPSS or PSPP, but you can't associate the produced file types to them. Therefore we should fix that for a overall better support for those files important to many social scientists. This would ease migration from Windoze for this kind of people. [Bug 312511] [NEW] Master channel fails in Ubuntu 8.10
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager Ubuntu 8.10 just installed in HP Compaq nx6110, audio card Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03). Setting master channel to 0% does not completely silence (very low sound, but not silence) unless PCM is also set to 0% (or muted). In the same way, setting 0% on PCM does not completely silence unless Master is also at 0% or muted. Muting on both channels is working. Tried mostly with Device Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer), but also happens with the others. This did not happen in a previous installation of Kubuntu 8.10 in this same laptop. [Bug 301744] [NEW] [intrepid] screen brightness keys act very slowly
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I press Fn+Home on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61, I expect the brightness to go up a step, and I expect the OSD to show that change. What actually happens, is that the brightness goes up a step, the OSD pops up, and then there's a pause of exactly 1 second, after which the brightness goes up another step and the OSD hides. If I hit Fn-Home a few times, there's a 1 second pause between each step, which makes it rather irritating when you want to go up from 50% to 100% or back. Fn- End, which reduces the brightness, has the same delay. This is a regression since Hardy, where the volume keys worked fine with no pauses. It could be a duplicate of #286102, except that I don't see the OSD reverting to a previous brightness level, and I haven't seen this bug in Hardy. Running the app from terminal yields the following output $ gnome-volume-control ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=2 name='XSMP Session on gnome-session as 10506aee31bfef11612321918885873130042690039' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=67 name='exaile.py' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=68 name='GNOME Volume Control' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating sink: index=0 name='alsa_output.pci_8086_284b_sound_card_0_alsa_playback_0' description='HDA Intel - ALC660-VD Analog' map='front-left,front-right' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating source: index=0 name='alsa_output.pci_8086_284b_sound_card_0_alsa_playback_0.monitor' description='Monitor of HDA Intel - ALC660-VD Analog' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating source: index=1 name='alsa_input.pci_8086_284b_sound_card_0_alsa_capture_0' description='HDA Intel - ALC660-VD Analog' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Failed to initialized stream_restore extension: No such extension ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Removing event role [The app stalls here for 2-3 minutes] ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=69 name='Native client (UNIX socket client)' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: setting theme __no_sounds ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Create monitor for 1 ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating output settings ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=70 name='exaile.py' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating client: index=70 name='exaile.py' ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: Updating source output: index=1 name='Peak detect' client=68 source=1 ** (gnome-volume-control:29590): DEBUG: setting theme __no_sounds And then the window appear. The bug is reproducible everytime. There's another bug concerning gnome-volume-control already being run by bootup/session, but I checked and that's not an issue in this case. Also you might notice Exaile is running. The bug also occurs when no audio stream is playing. ** Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-volume-control takes several minutes to show GUI https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318229 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-media in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 312337] Re: Totems ply screen flickers while playing a video or music
Hey, Same here. Ubuntu 8.10, Totem 2.24.2 using GStreamer 0.10.21 with ATI Radeon HD 3470. I Don't know how to check wether Compiz is enabled. But when selecting the Compiz application in the Gnome Menu (Applications Other Compiz), the screen flickers and window manager returns to a normal desktop view. If info is needed, please let me know. Kind regards. -- Totems ply screen flickers while playing a video or music https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 27109] Re: nautilus uses 100% cpu after closing a ssh session
I have similar problem but with samba-mounts. Unfortunately I can not reproduce, but I had two samba mounts via nautilus, one of them caused nautilus to use 100% CPU, as unmounting reduced the cpu-usage immediately. -- nautilus uses 100% cpu after closing a ssh session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27109 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 315922] Re: 2.6.27-11 makes brightness not work
I'm on Jaunty, and the latest 2.6.28-4.10 generic x86-64 kernel entirely removes my ability to change brightness levels; the previous kernel works perfectly. Under the old kernel, /proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness returns this: levels: 100 51 30 37 44 51 58 65 72 79 86 93 100 current: 100 Under the new kernel, it returns this: not supported Under the old kernel, HAL uses /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 to control brightness; under the new kernel, the /sys/class/backlight directory is completely empty. I believe the fix for the reversed brightness bug ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/311716 ) is most likely what broke my brightness control. Also note this comment in that bug description: Risks: as we are supressing ACPI brightness support we may suppress it where it is required Laptop is a customized-to-order HP EliteBook 8530w. ** Attachment added: dmidecode.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21291635/dmidecode.log -- 2.6.27-11 makes brightness not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/315922 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
