[Bug 184318] Re: Automatic encryption when replying to an encrypted email

Confirmed: Unencrypted replies are major security issue. It requires me
to remember to set encryption signature option every time when I reply
to encrypted message. Btw. It also happens with GPG not only S/MIME.

[Bug 393074] [NEW] Can not disable the laptop Lid

2009-06-28 Thread damas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have changed lid_ac and lid_battery in gconf-editor (under appsgnome-
power-managerbuttons) to nothing.

When i press my power button (wich is configured to suspend) or choose suspend
from the shutdown menu,
the laptop suspends, but if i then close the lid, the laptops wakes up again.

Seems that the close lid action is triggering to power on.

And I have not found were to disable wake up on lid open under
Systempreferencespower management or in gconf-editor.

I expect nothing to happen, when I open or close the lid at any time.

Realease: Ubuntu 9.04
Hardware: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo si 2636, Intel 965 GM.

[Bug 355281] [NEW] photo import from memory card is poor

2009-06-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

when you plug in a memory card into an ubuntu machine, it automatically
mounts the file system. And if it contains pictures taken with a
digicam, it automatically offers to launch f-spot for importing.

However, the import functions of f-spot are annoying, they are slow, get
into trouble if a file name already exists (i.e. runs into gnome error
messages instead of beeing able to deal with it), can't reliably detect
dupes, and for some reason I don't know puts imported pictures in my
home directory instead of the configured folder (as ~/Photos), while
destroying the folder structure by putting them as a flat file
collection in the home directory. This is poor and causes trouble.

I'd therefore propose to search for an alternative import program which
deals with all those special cases and does this as fast as cp -a .

Unfortunately, I did not yet find any better alternative to propose.

regards
Hadmut

[Bug 370541] Re: Jaunty's GDM Autologin doesn't work anymore

2009-06-28 Thread P-Baumgart
i have the exact same problem! autologin works for a few days after
ubuntu install, but then sporadically falls back to the login screen. it
helped to deaktivate and activate again the autologin in the config-
tool, but then some restarts later, it didnt take effect. so I changed
the autologin manually in the gdm.conf and gdm.conf-custom - no effect.
then i added the command sleep 3 to /etc/init.d/gdm to the place
before daemon starts - also no effect.

i have a 64bit system on ext4 and full-system-encryption. it was a
cllean install from the alternate cd. all patches are installed.

please can someone fix this bug? its taking me crazy! :-/

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2009-06-28 Thread Michael Nagel
i want to point out that this bug not only causes inconveniences because
some screensavers do not perform as good as they could, but some
screensavers are outright broken.

the screensaver to show pictures from the user directory must be
configured before it can work for non-english installs because the
folder name is hardcoded and incorrect for non-english installs. one
could of course improve the code to determine the correct folder but it
is still likely that the user puts his pictures elsewhere or does not
want to display all of them but just a subset.

so making screensavers not configurable is problematic for two reasons:
1. the settings chosen right now are broken under certain circumstances and
there needs to be a way to correct them
2. it is questionable if screensaver selection can ever be simplified so far
that no configuration is needed. people want to personalize their screensaver
just as they want to personalize their desktop. i do not see why this should be
technically restricted.

if our opinion is that much diverging from upstreams opinion maybe our
code should be diverging, too. however i cannot believe that they
neglect the need for configurability that vehemently. we should contact
them first.

[Bug 393103] Re: No feedback why the apply button in WPA2 Enterprise dialog is greyed out

2009-06-28 Thread Michael Helmling
Yes, that's what I mean - basically, the same filters should be applied to the
auto completion as to the folder view.
If you go to /usr/bin, the firefox isn't displayed, also if you do some
nonsense like echo foo test.cer, the folder view won't display this file as
it recognizes that it is not a valid certificate. The same holds true if the
file is not readable by the current user.
The solution that I would propose is just to use the same filter for the
possible paths that auto-completion considers as for the files that are
displayed inside the current folder.

[Bug 389419] Re: Totem finishes early with .rmvb files

2009-06-28 Thread Franz
Hello again,

The bug seems to not happen in Totem when you play the video entirely
(without pause and rewinds).

Asap I confirm this behaviour I post here again.

PS: I don't know if this could happen in gst-launch and ffplay, because
I cannot pause nor rewind videos on them, but I'm sure that in MPlayer
(and SMPlayer) it doesn't happen.

[Bug 292585] Re: Evolution Mail Notification has no sound

2009-06-28 Thread Daz
1) I have just updated to Ubuntu 9.04 and Evolution 2.26.1.
2) I now find that I also can't get the mail notification sound to work.
3) I have set Edit/Preferences/General to Play a sound, When New Mail Arrives
In.
4) I have set Edit/Plugins/Mail Notification/Configuration/Mail Notification to
Play sound file, clicked on Specify filename and selected
usr/lib/openoffice/basic-link/share/gallery/sounds/apert.wav.
When I click on Play the sound plays OK but it doesn't play when I receive new
mail.

5) When I type gconftool-2 -g apps/evolution/mail/notify/sound it returns;
/usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery/sounds/apert.wav, which was where the sound
file used to be located, but this path no longer exists.

I wonder if it is possible to use gconftool-2 to set the new path to the
sound file that I want to use?

[Bug 393008] Re: [Karmic] power management icon says laptop is connected to power when it isn't

2009-06-28 Thread Scott Howard
From Bug #386778 reported by Patrick (patrick-voegeli):

Using Karmic, gnome-power-manager doesn't work fine. It won't detect
that the battery is discharging or even running on battery. Also, when
pluging in the AC to charged, it acts flacky.

When running on battery:
atr...@patrick-laptop:~$ acpi -ab --details
Battery 0: Unknown, 34%
Battery 0: design capacity 5200 mAh, last full capacity 4587 mAh = 88%
Adapter 0: off-line

When running on ac:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ acpi -ab --details
Battery 0: Charging, 34%, 01:12:51 until charged
Battery 0: design capacity 5200 mAh, last full capacity 4587 mAh = 88%
Adapter 0: on-line

Running on battery and plugging the AC:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-

battery.remaining_time = 1569 (0x621) (new)

battery.voltage.current = 10957 (0x2acd)
20:27:54.770: computer_power_supply_ac_adapter_ADP1 property ac_adapter.present

Running on ac and unplugging:
patr...@patrick-laptop:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
20:28:26.272: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.remaining_time = 4357 (0x1105)
20:28:26.279: computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0 property
battery.charge_level.current = 17504 (0x4460)

battery.voltage.current = 11658 (0x2d8a)
20:28:26.367: computer_power_supply_ac_adapter_ADP1 property ac_adapter.present
= false

Both acpi and hal will detect the change from battery to charging
IMMEDIATELY, but gnome-power-manager won't. It doesn't detect it's
running on battery at all: the icon is like when running only on AC
(only the plug icon), and if under preferences running on ac tab I
pull the brightness down, it will decrease the brightness. In the
general tab, the icon will only display if Display always is checked,
the other 3 options hide the power-manager icon. Also, as stated before,
when pluging the ac, it will first display discharging (even though it
acts as when on AC, icon displayed is a battery) and after half a minute
it will show the correct charging state (battery with the plug)

When unplugged:

r...@patrick-laptop:~# cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate: 3808 mA
remaining capacity: 2236 mAh
present voltage: 10717 mV
r...@patrick-laptop:~# cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: off-line

When plugged (just after plugging in, gnome-power-manager still has the battery
only icon)
r...@patrick-laptop:~# cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: on-line
r...@patrick-laptop:~# cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charging
present rate: 2488 mA
remaining capacity: 2187 mAh

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-28 Thread kikl
I thought about how this feature could be implemented without annoying
users. There is no apparent logic behind the second click for changing
the file name. Therefore, this doesn't make any sense and it's difficult
to learn and get used to, IMHO. I never got used to it after years of
working with MS windows.

Instead the file name should be a dedicated and visible field separate
from the icon but connected to the icon. The outlines of the name field
must be visible using a color or frame. So, if you single-click on the
file-name field, you edit the file name. If you click on the icon, well
the same behaviour as before, you open the folder or file. I think that
makes sense. This is essentially what cody suggested.

In list view there are several columns for different information. If you
have a dedicated column for the file name and the file itself, then it
is optically clear that these two things are not the same. Furthermore,
they are clearly and consistently separated, so chances of clicking in
the wrong column are slim. So clicking the file name - once! - should
give you the option to change the file name. If you click the
file/folder icon, then the usual things should happen. You could also
highlight the name field and not the icon field, when you move your
mouse across that field, so you have an additional optical confirmation
of what you are about to do...

One more suggestion: If you mistakenly click the file name, it's
difficult to get out of this mode, as far as I remember. You have to
turn to the keyboard and press escape or enter or click on some other
arbitrary item. That's just something you are not prepared to do, while
your clicking through folders. As a default behaviour, a second click on
the file-name field should deselect the file name. In this case, users
shouldn't be bothered so much.

A little off-topic: I actually prefer list view because it displays the
files in an orderly fashion and you can easily switch the order, in
which everything is displayed. You can open and close particular trees.
It's very powerful and easy to use. There is one drawback. You don't
have nice previews of photos or videos as in the icon-view. It would be
nice to have a preview (only) of the selected photo/video in list view -
only for multimedia files, where it makes sense. It seems that this is
what apple is doing - well sort of...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Finder.png

Looks snazzy, but is it really better?

Good day and good luck and keep up the great work!

[Bug 355970] [NEW] jaunty nautilus Segmentation fault (core dumped)

jaunty beta was running reasonably well on this IBM ThinkCentre A30 Celeron 2
gHz with 1 gb memory i845 VGA graphics.

terminal, Firefox, etc. work, however:

Updates as of April, the center of the screen is black. Top and bottom
lines still display and work except for anything involving nautilis,
like Places. Spins for a while then drops out, no task bar on bottom
line, center of display black.

Try:
nautilus --no-desktop /home
gets
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Where does the dump go?

Tried latest CD Live, 20090403, same result.

Anything I can try?

[Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems

2009-06-28 Thread mogliii
Hi,

my report here applies for Ubuntu Jaunty with HP Laserjet 4050 over JetDirect
(Network). I have the latest packages installed, as explained in this thread:
dpkg -l cups
cups 1.3.9-17ubuntu3.2Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
server
dpkg -l poppler-utils
poppler-utils0.10.5-1ubuntu2.2PDF utilitites (based on libpoppler)

Following problems:
(1) When I print something, lets assume only text from openoffice, it gets
printed fine, but a message appears on the printer's display: 40 EIO 1 FEHLERH
UBERTRAGUNG (I have german printer). I found Bug No 229981 that seems to be
similar.

(2) I printed the content of a website to .pdf
(http://www.tagesschau.de/schlusslicht/ubahnphilosophie100.html) using
the above mentioned versions of cups and poppler. The file is 900 kb
large. Printing it from Evince generates a 9 MB print job which takes
three minutes to print, but the font is being converted to bitmaps. So
it looks awful (see attached scan). This also happened with an EasyJet
travel itinerary. (no 40 EIO error)

(3) I printed the content of the website directly to the 4050 printer,
went much faster and the fonts are properly printed. (no 40 EIO error)

I still feel that the whole printing thing needs some tweaking. I can
not rely on my Ubuntu to print a scanned A4 page or a 80 page pdf
document. However I can with WinXP. I hope this will be fixed.

2009-06-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I know it's a little thing, but it really bugs me.
If I load nautilus up and I view the files and folders as a list I get the
following problem.

If I use the keyboard to quickly move to a folder that starts with 'S',
I press the 'S' key. In this case it takes me to a folder called
software. Which is great. But then if I use the mouse and double click
the software folder all the folders jump about and I end up opening a
random folder 3 or 4 items above or below the folder I clicked.

This may only occur if the list of folders is large enough to require
scrolling.

[Bug 385102] Re: Desktop is exposed from under screen lock after an Update Manager popup

In my case it's more than a few moments. For the last few releases my

don't click.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 317948 ***

having the same problem in 9.04

Ctrl+C doesn't work anymore. Have to use Ctrl+Alt+C instead of.

It worked in 8.10 fine.

[Bug 51043] Re: rightclick - paste missing in contextmenu when pointer is above files/folders

2009-06-28 Thread Christian A. Reiter
This would be just another bad workaround.
Fix it once and for all times by having free space clickable - context menu,
and as drop target.
paste in context menu of files is completely against all usability concerns.
I wether want to paste a file into another nor create a folder inside a file,
so I don't agree with you, sorry.

This has been discussed many times before.

[Bug 296030] Re: Brasero don't burn DVD DL (double layer) in Ubuntu Intrepid

2009-06-28 Thread Nicola Jelmorini
Recently I have purchased a new Laptop and I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 64bit
on it.
I have tried to burn a DVD-DL with Brasero, and this time all has worked well.
So I guess that my old Laptop has some problem with his CD/DVD writer and
Brasero actually function well.
From my part this bug can be closed now.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-28 Thread Flo Ebnet
@kikl:
One more suggestion: If you mistakenly click the file name, it's difficult to
get out of this mode, as far as I remember. You have to turn to the keyboard
and press escape or enter or click on some other arbitrary item. That's just
something you are not prepared to do, while your clicking through folders. As a
default behaviour, a second click on the file-name field should deselect the
file name. In this case, users shouldn't be bothered so much.

I disagree. If this feature is to be implemented, it should behave the
same as it does elsewhere - bringing Nautilus' behaviour in line with
that of other file managers is the whole point of this bug/feature
request in the first place. Besides, this would break expected
behaviour: In any text input field you assume that clicking into the
text allows you to position the cursor, not to trigger any action
outside of it.

And I do think this functionality should be implemented. Not because it
makes much sense in itself - what in UI design really does? - but
because some people find it useful. Personally I think this function
sucks and I prefer F2. But I know people who use and love it and who
miss it whenever they have to use my Ubuntu laptop. And since, if
selectable as an option, it does not break current behaviour, I am all
for it.

Regarding the default setting I am not really sure what would be better.
Michael Dittmann makes a very valid point in 4.1.1: People who come to
Linux from another system have enough work on their hands just getting
to know that shiny new OS some nerdy friend set up for them; we should
not assume that they would know or easily find out how to change this
setting. If it's not there from the start, they may well assume it is
not available at all. So I would argue for making the rename
functionality the default.

On the other hand I know I'd be very angry if my beloved and well-
configured and adapted desktop would start to behave weird after an
update. So if this is going to be pushed onto people, they'd better be
well informed about what is going on. And I am not talking about one
line in the release notes. Would it be possible to display a notice on
first activation that explains why the rename mode was entered, how to
leave it and where to configure it? Or even better: one that even offers
the direct option to disable this feature?

(That is one of my biggest gripes with OpenOffice: When AutoCorrect
kicks in it helpfully offers an icon that opens the relevant entry in
the manual which explains where in the settings you can configure this
behaviour, instead of simply opening the relevant settings page.
Aggravating, really.)

[Bug 39328] Re: Disable scrolling on window list to flip through windows

2009-06-28 Thread Marcus Carlson
xtknight, I wrote a similar patch to disable scrolling in the workspace
switcher, maybe we should use the same gconf key name?
Se bug #150443 for the patch.

I don't think it's necessary to add a GUI option to enable the
scrolling, this just clutter the gui, better let it rest in gconf for
the geeks who want it (like me).

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-28 Thread kikl
@flo

What makes sense in UI? For example, a trashbin for deleted files. An
envelope for an e-mail program. A places folder for the file browser,...

Oh, by the way, you can use the arrows for navigating the cursor and
that actually makes more sense than using the mouse, since you've got
your fingers on the keyboard anyway, when editing the file-name.

I don't think it's a good idea to merely copy a feature because windows
is using it, In particular if many many users complain about it. If it's
going to be copied, it should be done in such a way that it doesn't
bother a whole lot of users. It should be better than what windows has
to offer.

Following your argument, ubuntu should merely copy the windows interface
including all of it's bugs just because users are used to it. That's no
good and it wont make ubuntu No. 1 in terms of usability. So maybe you
have a suggestion, how the annoying problem can be overcome that many
users very often mistakenly start editing file names when this feature
is implemented? It really annoyed me a lot!
