2009-09-27 Thread dl9sau
Terminal windows are one of developer's most important tool. It's a real pain
that the terminal program (and all it wonderful open windows with important
stuff) dies just because it should print binary data.
In a remote ssh session i did a wget for a program at sorceforge which resulted
in the file strace-4.5.18.tar.bz2?use_mirror=dfn.
Well, the usual question ist it a bz2 or just a referer? I did cat
strace-4.5.18.tar.bz2?use_mirror=dfn and gnome-terminal crashed.

System here ubuntu karmic 64bit.

[Bug 403130] Re: All my desktop icons were rearranged

2009-09-27 Thread Giovanni Bortolozzo
As you can see in the attached screenshots, the position of all the link
icons are resetted on a new login (I don't know if their positions
weren't saved on the log out). All but the video link (on the bottom
left) just because this is a broken link (it points to a directory in a
filesystem the must be manually mounted after the boot).

Instead all the normal files and directory keep their chosen position.

[Bug 376854] Re: Invest applet incorrectly displays 3y data

2009-09-27 Thread Martin Mai
Comment from upstream:

I have applied the patch to a local pre-2-29 branch. I'll keep this bug closed
and use 536224 as the tracker for this issue (since its open and this isn't).
I'll close that bug once I've published it in a public place closer to the 2.28
release.

I am updating the bugwatch to point to the mentioned bug so that we will easily
now when the fix is ready.

[Bug 388953] Re: bad file descriptor on .deb install

2009-09-27 Thread Juan Manuel

In my pc the same problem occurs.

My version of Karmic Koala is in Spanish. When I install both programs,
the end state that is not possible. At the terminal I get the following
text, but in Spanish:

Dpkg: can not read the properties of the descriptor file for
package `This progress and file descriptor ': Invalid file descriptor

My version of Karmic Koala is updated daily on September 26.

The same error happens to me on two different Pc. One in the 32bit version and
another with 64.
Once the installer indicates that you can complete the installation, you can
not close that window unless you log off.

I discover that a similar bug report has been filed to Launchpad already.
Apport does not give me a chance to add it here to this report. So please
improve Apport so that a user can attach the report sent earlier to an already
existing bug report. Otherwise bug-squatting is complicated.
Let me know what else tests should I pursue and report their results in order
to make it easier to squat this bug.

[Bug 437580] [NEW] [karmic] in videos embedded pictures are no longer used as thumbnails

2009-09-27 Thread anselm.reisner
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure whether gstreamer is the right package for this bug report but at
least ubuntu-bug thinks so. The problem is that the totem-video-thumbnailer no
longer uses in matroska files embedded artwork to create thumbnails. Normal
thumbnails are created fine but during the Jaunty release I added to all my
videos proper artwork and it looked really nice so I hope this can be fixed.

[Bug 287914] Re: Nautilus bookmarks deleted when computer runs out of memory

2009-09-27 Thread spade
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 222957 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222957

Hi,

I am running Nautilus 2.26.2 with Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and I had the same
behavior.
So I have 2 questions :

1/ The anaysis that Martijn made on 2009-05-18 looks fair enough but the
fix has not been included in any version between 2.22.5.1 and 2.26.2.
When will it be ?

2/ I have no ~/.gtk-bookmarks directory. Where are bookmarks stored ? If
I have this information, I'll be able to backup them manually at least,
or put them in a safer location.

This bug is about Nautilus safety, so it may be considerered as
important and with a high priority.

Regards.

[Bug 51043] Re: rightclick - paste missing in contextmenu when pointer is above files/folders

2009-09-27 Thread Joslyn
** Description changed:

  What I did:

  - Nautilus is configured to show listview, and the directory-tree on the left
( just checked, symbolview has the same issue )
- - right-click on a file/folder and clicking on copy
+ - right-click on a file/folder and clicking on copy
  - change to the folder where the file/foldershould be copied to
  - rightclick anywhere in the listview of the contents of that folder

  What happened:

  - When rightclicking on a folder, there is the option to insert into that
folder ( which is nice ) and cut and copy - no paste
- - When rightclicking on a file the only options are cut and copy - no paste
+ - When rightclicking on a file the only options are cut and copy - no paste
  - When actually rightclicking on the actual folder from the tree-view, paste
into that folder exists, but is inactive (!!!) - so no workaround available

  What I expected:

a past option that pasts the files/folders I've copied before into the
folder at whichs contents I'm looking.
and a paste into that folder option in the treeview

  What I found out :

when there are very few files/folders in a folder, and the list is
shorter than the nautilus window could show - the whitespace below the
list has this option. This should simply be added to the files and
  folders.

P.S: please do not remove paste into that folder - its nice actually,
  but not all I expected...

[Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-09-27 Thread Alex Murray
@Bryce: I am pretty sure the Ubuntu xorg-server is still missing one of
the fundamental upstream patches to fix this issue - as Ive said on a
number of other bug reports which report this issue still, the following
patch is still needed:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=c1d901d723c3bee523736eacc15b44a7dff484fe

And until this is applied I am pretty sure screen blanking will still
not work properly in karmic - which is why we keep getting bugs filed
against gnome-power-manager (such as the one anagor linked to above) but
I am pretty sure the problem is just that we still don't have this final
patch - I've checked the xorg-server package source at it is definitely
not in there. Please can you add this patch and fix this issue once and
for all - besides think of all the duplicates you're going to get once
the beta is out if it doesn't include this patch...

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Hi Folks:

Although I can set the keyboard shortcuts for most of the compiz plugins
with the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings manager, the settings I enter
for the Put plugin to not take effect. I am on a T61 laptop running the
latest updates of Gutsy and do not have the KP keys, so I'd really like
to remap so that I can place windows with the keyboard.

What happens is that I enter the new keyboard shortcut under the
Bindings heading in the Actions tab of the Put plugin and they show up
for a split second, then the Bindings hierarchical menu closes and the
setting is erased.

What is the actual file that holds these settings? Perhaps I can try
setting it manually there to see if it works.

Thanks for any help,

Re: [Bug 385445] Re: Monitor does not turn back on and computer hangs when laptop lid is closed

2009-09-27 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks for commenting on this bug.

1) It is marked for expiration because no one has replied with more
information after it was marked incomplete.
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status). It was marked incomplete
because there was not enough information for a developer to work on
the bug and it was not tested in Karmic (see comment #2).

2) To use apport to add information to an existing bug, type
'apport-collect BUG NUMBER' into the terminal ('apport-collect
385445' for this bug)

3) To debug gnome-power-manager, follow the instructions at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager.

4) The author of gnome-power-manager has removed the suspend and
hibernate actions from clicking on the icon in the tool bar. If
you'd like to comment on that, file a bug or discuss it on the mailing
list. Information is at:
http://projects.gnome.org/gnome-power-manager/. We should keep this
bug report on topic, which is: Monitor does not turn back on and
computer hangs when laptop lid is closed (this may need to be filed
under xorg-server)

[Bug 437682] [NEW] Missing Run Application entry in Keyboard Shortcuts customization dialog

2009-09-27 Thread karbak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The ability to customize the shortcut for the Run application dialog
(default: Alt-F2) used to exist in Jaunty - this seems to have gone
missing as of Karmic of Sep 27, 2009. The listing in the Keyboard
Shortcuts customization application does not list the shortcut at all
any more. It seems this functionality is not provided by a discreet
program, but instead is integrated into gnome-panel (please correct this
report if this is not the case). gnome-panel version is

[Bug 437691] [NEW] Shutdown button and Fitts' law

2009-09-27 Thread Nikola Kovacs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The shutdown button on Karmic's gdm is located in the lower right
corner. It is close to the screen corner, which is much easier to reach
with the mouse, but cannot be clicked by moving the mouse to the corner
because of some padding. Since the button is safe (it only opens a
menu), there's no reason not to allow this.

Steps to reproduce:
On the login screen, move your mouse down and right. It should stop at the
corner pixel. Click the mouse. Nothing happens.
Expected result: The shutdown menu opens.

Fixing this is trivial:
22_shutdown_menu.patch adds a 6px padding around the button in this line:

gtk_box_pack_end (GTK_BOX (panel-priv-hbox), GTK_WIDGET
(shutdown_menu), FALSE, FALSE, 6);

This should be changed to 0.

The HumanLogin theme should have no menu shadow:

GtkMenuBar::shadow-type = GTK_SHADOW_NONE

[Bug 430435] Re: Evolution Contacts Category Mass Add/Remove

2009-09-27 Thread Finog
Apologies, I wasn't sure where to put this.

I imagine the right-click context menu having an Add/Remove Category
button which would bring up the Categories dialog from the Add Contact
menu. In Add-mode, selection of categories would add the selections to
the selected contact's category listings (if not already present)
whereas removal would remove the categories (if present).

[Bug 437684] Re: cannot access 2nd drive on desktop

2009-09-27 Thread Steven Harms
We do not have enough information to begin working on this bug.

For the 2nd drive, what method is it being connected with (USB?)

Can you attach the output of 'sudo fdisk -l' when the drive is attached?
Has it been formatted?

If you cannot answer all of these questions, you may have better luck on
http://www.ubuntuforums.org as we only fix bugs here, but do not provide
configuration support.

[Bug 34321] Re: should delete the saved session when unmarking automatic session saving option

2009-09-27 Thread Daniel Hollocher
ok, I think I fixed this, woo!

I'm happy that the fix is only 2.5 lines, 2 lines of which are somewhat
trivial. I think the fix integrates well.

I'm not really sure what happened with the original upstream bug report.
I suspect that this bug is not the same as the gnome bug. Plus I'm a
noob, so I don't really know what to do.

I will try and set this up on my ppa (a fun and profit kind of thing):
https://launchpad.net/~chogydan/+archive/gnome-session
This is my first attempt to fix a bug, and my second attempt to package
something, so please give me feedback!

I've only coded for jaunty, but it should be very simple to put into
karmic. Let me know if you would like that.

[Bug 34321] Re: should delete the saved session when unmarking automatic session saving option

2009-09-27 Thread Daniel Hollocher
hmm, I just found a regression with my proposed fix. I block session
loading if autosaving session is disabled, but what if there is another
way to save the session than through that option? Those would get
blocked too.

Now, I don't actually know what those other ways are, but if they exist
they will get blocked.

[Bug 437733] [NEW] set has-frame of option comboboxes to false

2009-09-27 Thread Nikola Kovacs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The option comboboxes on the bottom panel have a frame that prevents
their activation when clicked on the screen edge. It's easy to overshoot
with the mouse and reach the screen edge (Fitts' law), and clicking
there won't open the menu. In contrast, the button with the downward
arrow works when clicked on the screen edge.

Setting the has-frame property of the combobox fixes this. It does
change the appearance though.

I'll attach a simple patch that does this and a screenshot.

[Bug 437738] [NEW] [karmic] External display is turned off when laptop's lid is closed

2009-09-27 Thread Jaroslav Šmíd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I recently wanted to watch a movie on my TV connected to laptop over HDMI
output, but when I closed laptop's lid (I turned off laptop's screen with
xrandr before that), external output was turned off and laptop has suspended. I
then wanted to turn off suspend on lid closing, so I opened power manager
settings, but I could only choose to turn on the screensaver, suspend to
ram/disk and to turn off the computer. I chose to turn the screensaver, but
when I closed the lid again, external output was turned off, internal was
turned on and screensaver was activated.
There really should be an option to Do nothing when the lid is closed. In
current state it makes you to focus on laptop when it's lid is open when
watchig a movie. There is one workaround though - put the laptop under the
table - but I don't like that one much, especially in the night when one need
to __censored__ while watching the movie one cannot find the laptop and pause
the movie fast enought not to __censored__ himself.
