[Bug 473869] [NEW] Tracks play hyperspeed

2009-11-04 Thread Jeruvy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Sound seems broken from upgrade from Hardy - Karmic on a VMware vmx.

Sound worked fine in Hardy but now nothing comes out of the audio. When
attempting to playback music via rhythmbox it moves through the track at
hyperspeed (5 minute song scrolls through in about 15 seconds) but
nothing is heard through the audio device.

Re: [Sabily.team] [Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-04 Thread Saber OMRI
I've been sick seeing this mail updated every day with such purposes, kind
of humiliation of the man kind or big bug .. and this is really for
what?? for new GDM that lacks a config tool, 'im I wrong?
I really like the new way, the new colors theme and my favourite theme. And
who doesn't appreciate, can simply contact the GNOME team, since it's
related to that project not the ubuntu one. And PLEASE let's try to fix
Real Bugs
I appreciate to be not miss understood. Fanks all.

2009/11/4 Mark W jedimar...@gmail.com

Sebastian, please lighten up. I'm sorry to have to say this, but you
have created more negativity than others regarding this issue by pushing
 down legitimate complaints.

 * Rushing this version of GDM was a bad idea. *

GDM is an important package: It's (usually) the first user interactive
component a Ubuntu user is greeted with after BIOS/Grub. Take a look at
LinuxMint 7. They nailed it, the boot to login process is beautiful all
the way. New users can't wait to see what's next.. Even though it's
basically just Ubuntu with a (very) pretty desktop theme.

Anyway, the obvious lack of configurability with GDM noted here is just
 one problem...

 1. XDMCP - Some of us actually use thin-clients.
 2. Security: Let's face it, users are more likely to stuff it up when
 configuring manually.
 3. The default is just plain ugly and should never have been approved.
Sorry, but black on brown sucks.
 4. Being slowed down and forced to click on a name in an ugly userlist is
 counter-intuative to useability.

During the upgrade process, Insufficient migrationary stuff was done
with the config files.. It should have been automatic at least regarding
the settings that do have a counterpart in the new configuration.

Okay, individual bugs could be created for each of these issues and
perhaps more constructively dealt with, but the real problem here
appears to be a little inflexibility of the human kind..

Status in gdm in Ubuntu Karmic: Fix Released

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gdm

In Karmic the Login Window Preferences option from the GNOME System -
Preferences menu is missing. I'm no longer able to configure gdm
graphically. Something I was able to do until recently and in Jaunty.

 The new gdm :
 - discussion have started during the hardy uds 1.5 year ago
 - the new gdm has been accepted upstream by GNOME and used for over a year
 in several other distributions
 - the ubuntu team decided to wait on the change because of the known issues
 - the new version was available since jaunty in the ubuntu-desktop ppa and
call for testing have been made
 - the change has been decided this cycle because karmic had technologies
changes in view of the lts coming next cycle, it's better to use recent and
 maintainer codebases there
 - the canonical desktop team spent time this cycle writing a gdmsetup tool
and fixing several issues in the new gdm version
It's not perfect yet but is expected to be improved.
 Thanks for your patience!
 -
The changes are due to an upstream [Gnome] update , which was blocked in
 Ubuntu for 3 cycles .
Any further discussions regarding lack of features can be discussed
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587750 or users can open new
 bugs regarding the missing features.

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-11-04 Thread Alfredo Pironti
Actually, I can reproduce this bug even after I deleted my old
configuration (that is, when the default configuration is in place).

Steps to reproduce the bug on my system:
1) rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/panel/ # restore default configuration
2) killall gconfd-2 # make sure the new configuration is read
3) Then start gnome-panel; everything is fine.
4) Remove the notification area applet; the panel crashes, then reloads and
crashes continuously, until you do steps 1) and 2) again

Shall I open a new bug for this? Thank you for your very prompt support.

The relevant section of .xsessions-error follows:

The program 'gnome-panel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 3389 error_code 8 request_code 1 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 473910] [NEW] Evolution Mail does not allow secondary email selection

2009-11-04 Thread Joris Goudriaan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When sending an email to contact's second (or more) email address (as
displayed in the drop down while entering the address), after pressing
return or clicking with mouse it automatically defaults to the primary
email address of the contact. It does so with all contacts and has only
been an issue since 4/11/2009, even before updating with latest update

This bug means I cannot send emails to secondary emails of contacts any

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Stating over and over that the update was rushed will not make it be
true see previous comments, you would have prefered the switch to happen
during the lts cycle so there was no room for comments and changes?
Letting the lts on non maintained technologies was not an option

Quick reply to your point though and I will stop there: xdmcp is a known
issue and will be worked, security is a false argument you don't have to
tweak settings or describe specific need, we plan to add option to
change sound, theme and user list during the next cycle, default theme
and color is a matter of taste and the userlist being counter-intuitive
should be easy to fix, if those are you only complain we are in good
shape to get things on track for the lts which was the plan there, you
can keep using jaunty if you prefer, karmic has been meant to be a
technology changes versions before the lts coming in lucid

[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2009-11-04 Thread ktulu77
Still here on karmic too on my computer.

I don't understand why this bug is not fixed. There is already a
workaround : enable just one checkbox in the keyboard preferences
(SytèmePréférencesClavierOptions de l'agencement then under Utiliser
la barre d'espacement pour insérer un espace insécable check La barre
d'espacement renvoie un espace ordinaire à tous les niveaux). Why is
this not done by default ?

This bug is here for more than a year, with a solution. I use ubuntu
with this workaround for a long time, and I never had any problems. It
is clear that no one knows how to fix the source of this bug but the
workaround works well, and is just on the french keyboard layout (so it
is not dangerous and the risk of regressions is very small).

Rhythmbox is one of the main app of Ubuntu and the french community of
ubuntu is important. Could someone just enable this checkbox by default
please.

 * Rushing this version of GDM was a bad idea. *

As already mentioned there was *no* rushing! this has been *not* used

As you previously said : distro-junkies (like me:) are bound to face
new changes.
If such users want to use the latest version there are bound to face
such side-effects...
If they wanted to use the older version, they could might as well stick
with 9.04 which has all the features they want.

 2. Security: Let's face it, users are more likely to stuff it up when

What security? either way these are separate bugs about any missing
features.

 3. The default is just plain ugly and should never have been approved. Sorry,

 4. Being slowed down and forced to click on a name in an ugly userlist is

Beauty is subjective , and such comments are really not constructive.

BTW , what does a user really do at the login screen? If it is ugly why
do you keep staying at the login screen ;) ... just start your session
and move on... :)

If you had such strong sentiments you could have participated in the

[Bug 473675] Re: Dragging email attachment file icon to desktop crashes Evolution

2009-11-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-11-04 Thread rom85
I have tried several PCs. They were based upon Intel chipsets such as G33/31,
i865, i915, i945 all with integrated video used. All of them had Celeron
proccessors on board, 512MM of RAM and SATA 80GB drives. Tested versions of
Ubuntu were 8.10, 9.04 and 9.10. None of them worked good, talking about USB
speeds. I've tried different combinations, playing with enabling/disabling Usb
Legacy Support in BIOS, setting pci=noapc pci=routeirq and elevator
parameters in grub's configuration. These were some tricks discussed on
forums. None of these experiments helped on any of the machines. The symptoms
were: when copying files to flash drive the speed decreases from about 24BMps
at start (according to speed indicator either in Nautilus or MC) to almost
1MBps-200-300kbps, than the progress freezes (doesn't answer for escape key or
Cancel) as long as system starts hanging also, while CPU load isn't high at
all. When you copy small files up to 50-150MB it's all right, written quite
fast, but films are impossible to write as 1,4GB is a hard task. When you watch
the copy-progress bar it's either moving fast or stopping for some time, than
again. Even if copying is finished in a program I can see that usb stick is
working for some time more indicating that with a lamp on it.
For those willing to say to buy a new flash drive - they are workable and well
and of different manufacturers and USB 2.0 is enabled in BIOS.
Sincerely see further for bug fixing. I will supply all necessary information
if requested.

[Bug 472245] Re: gnome-panel hangs with almost 100% CPU usage

2009-11-04 Thread gesus
Yes I get the same issue if I login with another user. The entry in
fstab which created that trouble was:

/dev/sdb1 /media/Volume ntfs-3g defaults,locale=de_DE.UTF-8 0 0

To more precise, of course the problem did not disappear after
commenting it out, but after rebooting.

What does this mean, a '.local' change? I tried to mount this device
(/dev/sdb1) without the locale-options. No problems.

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2009-11-04 Thread jal
Just played gnometris for the first time, and indeed with the Tango
Shaded theme a lag is detectable at the lower levels, but from level 10
and up the game becomes unplayable, despite it taking only a little
over 50% processor power (a rediculous amount for such a game, but at
least it shows that it's not maxing out on my CPU - note that I have a
single core Celeron 2.66GHz, so no hyperthreading issue). Even clicking
the window's close button lags, and I get a force application quit
pop-up. When selecting the Plain theme, the game is playable and the CPU
stays around 12%. So it seems the game has some serious graphics issues.

Re: [Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2009-11-04 Thread Creak
A workaround is not a bug fix... And doing a special treatment for foreign
language is definitely not a bug fix either (i'm french BTW).
I think the bug should just be fixed by the developers (I don't care if it's
one of Rhythmbox or of GNOME or X.org). And I also think it's a shame that
more than a year after the bug appears in launchpad, the bug is still active
and even though not fixed!

What should we do to be heard? Maybe open a brainstorm idea?

Please subscribe to this idea as fast as possible so that the admin can't
say it's just a bug...

[Bug 473985] [NEW] Can't open a video with a subtitle file when this option is checked

2009-11-04 Thread CoudCoud
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Hello,
I'm using Totem 2.28.1 on Ubuntu Karmic.
I activated the option which automatically loads the associated subtitle file
when you open a movie.

But when I load a film that has a .srt file (I didn't try with other
kind of sub files), Totem freezes.

Here is the message displayed when I launch it in cli :
totem '/home/mat/Documents/Libre/happy-birthday-to-gnu-french.ogv'
(totem:12988): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: value 10752000 of type `guint' is
invalid or out of range for property `connection-speed' of type `guint'
The problem doesn't happen when I disable the option and manually load the
file.

It's really annoying, and I will temporary use VLC, but I really like
Totem and its functionality to go forward and backward with the arrow
keys.

I hope this bug will be trivial to solve.

[Bug 473995] [NEW] evince does not have support for latex's pdfsync

2009-11-04 Thread DanielCordeiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

pdfsync [http://itexmac.sourceforge.net/pdfsync.html] is latex package
that allows one to synchronize between LaTeX source and pdf output. When
used with a text editor and a PDF viewer that both support pdfsync, you
can navigate from the source to the output and vice versa.

xpdf and Okular already have built-in support for pdfsync.

It will be very nice if this gets implemented in Evince some day. :-)

[Bug 446783] [NEW] Karmic Login (single user) requires Enter input before password.

2009-11-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

For single user, Jaunty used to proceed directly to login window, where
I would enter USERNAME and then hit enter, and then to the password
screen where I would enter PASSWORD and then hit Enter to proceed.

Now in Karmic I get my username automatically entered, but I must hid
enter to display the password field, and then I enter PASSWORD, and
then hit Enter again.

Surely if It can find my username automatically, it can see that there
is only one, and then it should be able to automatically display the
password entry field, saving an unnecessary Enter .

[Bug 474015] [NEW] There are no any ICQ contacts on my list

2009-11-04 Thread Galkin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10 (i386)

empathy:
  Installed: 2.28.1-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.28.1-1ubuntu1

I have a problem with Empathy (and Pidgin too). My ICQ contacts are not
showing. I have two computers: PC and Notebook. On my PC I upgraded
Ubuntu from 9.04, but on my Notebook I installed from LIVE-USB with
Karmic 9.10 two days ago. After that I have no any contacts on my Pidgin
and Empathy. I have also GMAIL (Jabber) and Yahoo! contacts. But they is
displayed finely. I have no idea what's wrong. I try to find any
problems on /var/log/syslog but there ara no any messages. I click on
the Empathy to show empty groups and all my groups (tree) is displayed.
But all of them is empty.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
