[Bug 581630] Re: Critial battery suspension on full battery

2010-05-19 Thread Konstantin Lavrov
Here is the reason:
 energy-rate: 791.681 W

The same case like mine.

In fact there are bugs already filled where I already made my comment.
All those bugs about that suspend or hibernation is happened after AC is
removed.

Here is from my comment in #516023:

There are laptops that have enormous peak in energy consumption while
being plug to or unplugged from AC power.

Look at screenshoot from gnome-power-statistic: energy-rate is more then
0,7kW

When cable was unplugged calculated time-to-empty is wrong and very
small. But g-p-m reacts on this event and do what is set in prefs.

To avoid suspend or hibernating I turn off time policy:
gconftool-2 --type bool --set
/apps/gnome-power-manager/general/use_time_for_policy false

In this case 'Critical low battery' event not happen because percentage
is correct. But 'Battery discharging' notification still shows wrong
minutes and right percentage: 1 minute of battery power remaining (99%)

Actually this energy-rate jump not g-p-m related (I filled bug 531190
against upower), but anyway this behavior of g-p-m is very annoying.

Can you post a screenshot (open Run Application dialog via Alt-F2 and type

This could be a duplicate of bug #572550. Please read through it and see if

 the resolving work better.

[Bug 582653] Re: On Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 Evolution is crashing frequently

2010-05-19 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Dear Francesco,

sony. I'm going to test it this evening after work.
I'll let you know if the issue has changed/resolved. More information can be
found here http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/5/16/89

On Tue, May 18, 2010 at 11:26 AM, Francesco Giudici
fgiud...@dico.unimi.itwrote:

 Dear bas,
I really don't know when an official fix will be available.

I think that the problem is related to the change in the way fn keys are
dealt with: the new trend is to manage the events generated by the key
pressure using gnome power management (or something like that, I don't
 remember exactly).
I have fixed the problem just adding the key pressure events in the old
acpi management mode (acpid I think). Then I have binded the managed events
with custom scripts that use the setpci utility to manipulate video
 brightness.

I have done it just for myself... then posted to give a quick fix to
 other having the same issue.

The problem is that fn keys generate custom events from one manifacturer to
another and often from one model to another inside the same vendor!. So, it
is almost impossible for developer to release software containing all the
fn-keys events binding for all the laptop models of all the vendors.
Anyway, when the problem hits many people (i.e., the laptop is bought by
many people using linux) then probably an official fix will be released.

So, I don't think that an official fix will be released very soon.

 Cheers

 Francesco

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gphoto2

My camera is Digital Camera Canon EOS 350D and I have configured
Nautilus to open gThumb to import my photos.

If I open my session with the following locale en_US.utf8 :
When connecting the camera :
 - a Canon Digital Camera icon briefly appears on the desktop.
 - the Import Photos dialog of gThumb pops up and I can import my photos.

If I open my session with the following locale fr_FR.utf8 (that is to say the
one I use daily) :
When connecting the camera :
 - a Canon Digital Camera icon appears on the desktop and stay here.
 - the Import Photos dialog of gThumb pops up with the following error
message : Une erreur est intervenue dans la bibliothèque d'entrée-sortie
('Impossible de verrouiller le périphérique'): L'appareille photo est déjà en
service. which can be translated by An error occurred in the io-library
('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use..
In that case, in order to import the photo with gThumb, I must manually unmount
the camera (by right clicking on the Canon Digital Camera icon on the
desktop) and manually reselect my camera in the import dialog of gThumb.

I tested this in a brand new install a Lucid Lynx with a fresh profile.

[Bug 581352] Re: Unable to import photos in gThumb from my Canon camera when the fr_FR.utf8 locale is used

2010-05-19 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Thank you for your bug report. This might possibly be a revival of bug
#287689 (I assume you use the standard gthumb version from the lucid
repositories).
Could you please check the name of the gphoto2 directory in the .gvfs mount in
your home directory (with the french locale), e.g. open a terminal and type
  ls ~/.gvfs
This name should start with gphoto2, if it does not, the unmounting by gthumb
fails (and you have to do it manually).

[Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-19 Thread Clem
I start my session via gdm,

dbus-monitor --session shows :

Some details :

I tried just to update a few packages which seemed to me non criticals (which
couldn't be linked to the problem), and the problem came back again.

[Bug 582276] Re: gtk_widget_shape_combine_mask does not work correctly

2010-05-19 Thread Pietro Pilolli
I don't think that this is marked as a bug in the Gtk git
but I have contacted the committer and he confirms that this problem
in introduced with the commit 1f3a57691fbc8eba417fab7056bdb748bc4b6ab1
marked with the title Don't crash in DND when the X server doesn't support
SHAPE

http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=1f3a57691fbc8eba417fab7056bdb748bc4b6ab1

and it has been fixed with the commit 0efb24f589a74c4a4e78a1803d6e7205be9c1984
marked with the title Yet another fix for shape handling

This commit has made the same day of the previous one to patch the
previous commit

http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=0efb24f589a74c4a4e78a1803d6e7205be9c1984

The patch that I have proposed and that I have tested to solve the shape
problem
is the minimal one to align the code to the commit
0efb24f589a74c4a4e78a1803d6e7205be9c1984
marked with the title Yet another fix for shape handling

Exactly this one
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=0efb24f589a74c4a4e78a1803d6e7205be9c1984

I use the gtk code patched in this way and I have not detected new bad
behave in the gtk application

If you see the patch consist simply to return an empty region instead a NULL
pointer in the case in witch
the system does not support xshape or in witch we want apply a NULL shape to
the window
(it is used to remove the previous shape)

I hope that you can solve the problem.

Cheers bye

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-05-19 Thread Märt Suga
This bug has not appeared for some time now, but today it reappeared.
I also noticed that this time the battery applet was loaded into the indicator
applet. Most of the times the battery applet does not work for me (probably
caused by this this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libusb/+bug/427805 )
I think there might be a connection.

The easiest temporary one-time fix is killall gnome-panel.

[Bug 578910] Re: Brasero burning ISO dvd-rw fail please eject manually

2010-05-19 Thread walterav
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: brasero

  Ubuntu 10.04 i386,
  LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1S
  Nashua DVD-RW 4,7GB media

Burning an ISO file from the Nautilus context menu right mouse button
on ISO file Write to Disc... which opens Brasero does not produce a
working DISC. As extra options Properties I choose the lowest speed
and the max speed and I tried disabling use burn proof.

At the Lowest burning speed brasero comes up in the end with this message
window.
Please eject the disc from LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1S manually.
The disc could not be ejected thought it needs to be removed for the current
operation to continue.
The resulting burned DVD does not work does not boot by BIOS and does not
show up its contents etc in Nautilus it shows up as a empty writable disc ready
to add new content for writing.

When the Max Speed is selected it does not produce the eject manually
window, it ejects the disc in the end, but it also leaves me with a
unusable DVD like in the first situation.

When use burnproof is not selected it doesn't even start writing the
  disc.

  Workaround / Solution:
I can burn the ISO from terminal without any real problems, only the label
does not show, but it boots by my BIOS and Nautilus does show it contents after
writing. Terminal:
cdrecord -scanbus #look at CD/DVD burner device location nr
  cdrecord -v -dao dev=3,0,0 Downloads/lubuntu-10.04.iso #my device nr was 3,0,0

+ Burning a *.iso file to a Nashua CD-R 700MB with brassero, does work
+ at the 16x speed maybe also higher, it finalizes, it ejects and when
+ making an image the checksum is successful, there are no error messages.
+
  Check:
Doing a md5sum from the DVD-RW does show that it has been burned successfully
  sudo dd if=/dev/cdrw of=image.iso
  md5sum image.iso Downloads/lubuntu-10.04.iso
  386a227968cbabc89e1a23b95035160e image.iso

[Bug 582752] [NEW] nautilus-sendto does not work without evolution

2010-05-19 Thread nexus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

1) Ubuntu 10.04
2) nautilus-sendto 2.28.4-0ubuntu1

I don't use evolution but thunderbird so I uninstalled most of the
evolution-packages. Then I recognized that nautilus-sendto does not work
any more. If I choose a file and go to context menu - send to, no popup
appears.

If I install evolution and the dependent packages nautilus-sendto works
like normal.

nautilus-sendto should not depend on evolution furthermore, but it
should work without it.

[Bug 506219] Re: Gnome search tool (Search for Files...) fails if searching File System

2010-05-19 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- Nice catch , this is an interesting bug but not an intended design flaw,
hence not a papercut.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

It doesn't make Rhythmbox unusable, it's just a bit unpolished.

[Bug 555122] Re: Cannot adjust brightness in Lucid Lynx

2010-05-19 Thread Marctro
I have the same problem. I cannot adjust the display brightness neither
with the brightness applet, nor with the power management options from
gnome. This is annoying and a total dealbreaker for anyone using a
notebook or netbook. It sucks out much battery life because of always
having full brightness and it hurts the eyes.

It happened after installing the proprietary Ati 3D drivers. 3D
acceleration works, but the brightness adjustment doesn't work anymore.
I think this goes hand in hand with the issue that the boot-logo gets
ugly after installing proprietary video drivers. This must be fixed,
please.

Unfortunately, no Gnome panels is displayed. TO be more precise, gray

screen long) but don't containing anything. No mouse action display menu

[Bug 226368] Re: rhythmbox cannot search by filename

2010-05-19 Thread Marctro
This filename-column missing in the library is really annoying. SInce
I have sorted my complete collection cleanly by name only. Many of my
.wma/.ogg/.mp3 files have no tags and then the display of the media
library in rhythmbox looks inconsistent.

Exaile has an option to show a filename-only. Since Rhythmbox is however
the better player and delivered default in ubuntu I hope it will be
added eventually. It is now 2 years later (ubuntu 10.04) and still no
filename column.

It is ridiculous that instead of a simple filename column one has a file
location column which displays the whole path... this *really* looks ugly and
obsolete.

[Bug 496681] Re: Rhythmbox does not save playlist on iPod

2010-05-19 Thread Bill Edgar
I am seeing the same issue. I have a 4th generation iPod Nano,
formatted originally via Windows XP. I'm using Lucid with Rhythmbox
0.12.8. Functionality is much better than in previous versions of
Rhythmbox, I can successfully add new music to my iPod via drag and drop
and also create playlists. It seems I can also add songs to a playlist.
However, any modifications I make to song order within the playlist are
lost every time I disconnect the iPod. I've tried disconnecting the
iPod various ways, nothing seems to work.

[Bug 580965] Re: opening password secured pdf causes segfault and evince crash

2010-05-19 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 579069] [NEW] Unplugging AC power reports critical battery / auto-suspend; battery is actually full

2010-05-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04
Fully updated packages
Kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic

The computer is an MSI Wind u100 netbook, 3-cell battery. The BIOS is
flashed with the latest available firmware, which is 1.0G, released on
2010-01-04.

Upon unplugging the netbook from AC power, the panel reports that the
battery is critically low (2 minutes left) even though the indicator
applet also reports the battery is 100% charged; and then the system
auto-suspends without confirmation. After resuming from suspend, the
panel reports that the battery is 100% charged (or whatever the actual
value is.) In other words, the system is doing what is set under Power
Management, which is to suspend when the battery is critically low. The
problem is, the battery is NOT critically low, and the notification
bubble reports the battery 100% charged, but only has 2 minutes left.

Whatever information is needed, I will supply. I am not sure if this is
related to the kernel or a particular package.

This did not happen on Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10, 2.6.31 kernel.

[Bug 582822] [NEW] Battery charge information completely unreliable

2010-05-19 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

gnome-power-manager:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

On my Acer 5520 running Lucid, when the PC starts I get a battery old
or broken warning every time I log in.

Furthermore, when running on batteries, the discharge time indicated by
the power manager icon is random (starts from 40min, then goes to 50,
then down again). In the process, it might be the random value hits the
low-limit threshold, so I get a warning that batteries are low and/or
THE PC SHUTS DOWN.

Finally, the batteries seem to last much less than usual (about 1 hour
against the usual 2 and an half hours).

This is all new in Ubuntu Lucid, batteries were working great in Karmic
and lasting longer than Hardy.

[Bug 445123] Re: No GUI option to disable face browser

2010-05-19 Thread jgoddard
I find those commens particularly construtive in this context. This bug
was implemented with little thought to the fact that it opens a major
security hole in the os and prevents it from being used in a large
number of corporations (esentially any corporation with a decent
security policy).

The severity of the action has never been acknowledged by the powers
that be. The last two major versions of Ubutnu have seen a number of
major issues implemented on a whim that seem to be ignored completly.

Between this and a few other features like it I've been forced to
abandon Ubuntu as an os which is really sad because it had so much
promise before karmic.

Marking a security vulnerablilty as Medium and Won't Fix is
laughable at best and takes Ubuntu completly out of contention as a
corporate OS.

[Bug 581799] Re: Lot of dbus errors

2010-05-19 Thread Clem
Yes it does exactly the same.
I tried reinstalling the entire system from scratch, with same results.
I tried to replace metacity with other (xfwm), and replace gnome with xfce.
In the latter case, all is fine until some process try to access gvfs (open a
open window from firefox for example), then the problem comes back again.

[Bug 582815] Re: login screen halted when switching users

2010-05-19 Thread Leandro

One was a laptop with an Intel GMA X3100 and the other is a desktop (64bits)
with a Nvidia GeForce 210.

I clearly see that it will be hard even for me to provide further support in
helping
this bug, but if it is confirmed by other people it should not be low in
importance,
as it implies a full halt of the machine when someone is logged in. On the
machine
which I could not access from outside, I had to hard-reboot. If I had work in
progress
it would be lost, and we are talking about a LTS release.

[Bug 445123] Re: No GUI option to disable face browser

2010-05-19 Thread Rick Spencer
It *doesn't* open a security hole and it *is* configurable. The bug is
about lacking a *GUI* way of doing this for an individual end user. Such
a feature would not be desired by system admins over seeing large
deployments. Large deployments that require such functionality do not
accomplish it by going around to each of the computers and using
System-Administration tools to adjust these settings. The users
wouldn't have su in such situations anyway.

The real point is that it's not just a simple matter of adding one
little checkbox. Such features need to be developed and tested properly
before they are released, not jammed into the product at the last
moment.

[Bug 576669] Re: Document Viewer has no support for common office document file formats

2010-05-19 Thread madbiologist
OK, good point. I agree that the name Document Viewer is too generic.
It also appears in the title bar of the window, making things difficult
for new users when reporting a bug using ubuntu-bug. One has to select
About from the Help menu to see Evince mentioned a couple of times. KDE
avoids this by calling their PDF/Postscript viewer Okular and of course
Adobe uses the name Adobe Reader. The last time I checked Knoppix was
using the LXDE desktop with xpdf. xpdf is probably a self-explanatory
name, but even if it's not it's a lot less misleading than Document
Viewer.

Using the name Evince in both the window title and the Open With context
menu seems like a good solution to me. Having Evince open files created
by Microsoft Office and OpenOffice and KOffice and Abiword would be
really cool, but would take a lot longer to implement, no to mention
that I'd rather have a few different programs that each do a few things
really well rather than one program that does everything badly. To
refer to your description above, we don't really want users to expect
Evince to open their jpg file. Nor do we want people to try to watch
their DVD's or mangage their music collection with their web browser.

So probably a paper cut, as you said.
