[Bug 697112] [NEW] Backport fix for broken XDMCP login to Lucid

2011-01-04 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

XDMCP logins work the first time in Lucid, but not the second time due to an
uninitialized structure.
The relevant 2-line patch in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=579033#61 has been accepted
upstream and is included in Maverick+.
Please backport it to lucid-updates.

If anyone needs this before it's backported, I've uploaded a fixed .deb in my
ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~alkisg/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/1411779/+listing-archive-extra

[Bug 676624] Re: Panel applets randomly fail to start.

2011-01-04 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I've searched, and this seems to be the best bug to add a me too to.
At most logins (classic desktop), I typically get the trash applet,
window switcher, clock, and indicator applet fail to load, with an error
message along the lines of Clock applet quit unexpectedly.

With each applet that fails to load, the line:

** (gnome-panel:1748): WARNING **: Operation was cancelled

appears twice in ~/.xsession-errors

This has been going on for about 6 weeks now, and I guess it's because
the developers are focusing on Unity that this problem has got so little
attention. It's starting to drive me mad though, and I'm not far off
flagging natty is too buggy to even test right now, and going back to a
stable release.

[Bug 694867] Re: screen is shown if I connect my iPod while locked

I usually get the effect when I try (but not always, it seems random).

It seems that disabling the desktop effects indeed removes the effect
(atlhough it is possible that I got unlucky and could not get it due to
randomness, but unlikely).

Also enabling a screensaver (other than blank screen) seems to remove
the effect.

[Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus

2011-01-04 Thread ElPasmo
Thank you for explaining me what to do. But I'm still unable to reproduce this
issue.
gconf-editor - apps - nautilus - list_view - I've checked
default_sort_in_reverse_order
I've create two new documents a and b and insert them in a new folder. I've
entered the folder and found first b and after a.
I unchecked default_sort_in_reverse_order, created a new subfolder, moved a
and b to the new subfolder, entered it and found them in the correct order
(first a and second b).
I opened a gedit and try to open a file on those folders and I saw them in
normal order.

Trash bin also shows files in normal order.

I have to insist: the default_sort_order affects only to places that has
not been ordered previously. That's the reason I'm using new folders
along with old folders.

[Bug 697180] Re: when I try to use a sudo command, terminal requests a password but it won't let me write anything

2011-01-04 Thread Manfred Hampl
Please note that sudo does not show any response when you enter your password
(no characters, no asterisk signs etc.)!
So in most cases when a person thinks that sudo does not let you write a
password in reality it works as designed.

Can you try the commmand
id
and the command
sudo id

you should see a difference.

[Bug 697189] [NEW] Brasero crashed while trying to make a 1:1 copy

2011-01-04 Thread Praveen B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I am running Xubuntu 10.10 on usb stick (with persistence enabled).

After installing brasero (Brasero 2.32.0), I tried to create 1:1 copy of
a dvd to an iso image on the disk.

Brasero crashed with the following in syslog (/var/log/messages)
Jan 3 20:51:18 ubuntu kernel: [ 7471.061462] brasero[10175]: segfault at 14 ip
0067ee29 sp bf843ad8 error 6 in libglib-2.0.so.0.2600.0[66a000+cd000]

I was unable to report this via apport because it complained on outdated
packages. My apologies for that (I was under the impression that the
apport would work because I was using the latest ubuntu maverick).

I tried 'brasero --debug ~/Documents/brasero-crash-debug.log', but all this
gave was:
'Please type brasero --help to see all available options'

I have reproduced this defect on three different machines (using the
same usb stick).

I see that there is a newer version of brasero (2.32.1-0ubuntu1
according to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero). Is it
possible for me to try this newer version? If yes, where can I find
instructions to do that.

Also please let me know:
a. if I have reported this defect at a wrong place.
b. how I can provide more information w.r.t this defect.

2011-01-04 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 697193] [NEW] disc says successfully burnt (600k) when should be 4Gb!

2011-01-04 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Running Ubuntu Maverick 10.10, it's been installed a week or so.
brasero 2.32.0-0ubuntu2

I am trying to burn a big folder of files (4Gb) to a DVD. I start new
data project, drag and drop folder, it adds it up, tells me it's about
4Gb, enables the Burn button, which I clicked. I was asked whether to
make files Windows compatible, I chose No. After a lengthy process of
copying the files across from the network to /tmp/, pretty soon it says
finalising, then success, but the success button says 600k when the
DVD should be ~4Gb!

The disc is visibly NOT fully burnt (you can see it's burnt /something/
though). It mounts ok, but is empty.

I experienced this in 10.04, too, so installed k3b which worked fine.
This time I chose xfburn as my alternative, and this works, too, so I
think it's definitely a brasero problem.

I'd vote for this being flagged as really serious: it gives a false
success and many people burn DVDs etc. as backups. They burn them and
put them away until they really need to rely on them. Should not rely on
users noticing the reported burn size differs.

Thanks,
Rich

[Bug 697189] Re: Brasero crashed while trying to make a 1:1 copy

2011-01-04 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 422309] Re: External FAT32 Hard Drive takes excessive time to open in Nautilus

2011-01-04 Thread agnul
Elaborating a bit on my previous command: after plugging in the external
drive (250Gb fat32) the drive icon appears on the desktop immediately,
the drive is mounted and accessible from the terminal and/or using gvfs-
ls. Double clicking the drive's icon causes some system disk activity
but no nautilus window opens, no error messages, no crashes or
stacktraces. Double clicking again on the drive's icon a file manager
window eventually opens. If I safely remove, unplug and plug in the
drive again I can open a file manger window double clicking the drive's
icon just once.

[Bug 697241] [NEW] [natty] G-P-M Applets Missing

2011-01-04 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The Gnome Power Manager Applets, e.g. (and specifically) the Inhibit
Applet, are missing from Natty. This is also a known issue for Fedora
14.

From my understanding of the Fedora bug report, it is a packaging issue.
Certainly the code is still present in the G-P-M source repository.

I have written a command-line utility to control the inhibit state,
which I will attach to provide people with a workaround. It could be
grown into a suitable GUI replacement, e.g., for Unity.

Re: [Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-04 Thread gpk
Actually, on consideration, I don't think that automatic detection of
the timezone
is a viable solution. It suffers from all kinds of potential problems
like
What does it do if it's connected to a VPN?. If I connect via VPN
to my
office in the UK when I'm in France, I'd get the incorrect time.

Or, if I'm in the airport and I'm not yet connected to a network in my
new location,
it will be silently giving me incorrect timezone information. It'll be
telling me
what time it is in the other country. That's acceptable if you know
you have to
set it manually, but people will depend on an automatic system, and miss
their
connecting flights.

The trouble this will cause is a classic computer problem: it will be a
system that is
smart enough to be right most of the time.Being mostly right, people
trust it
and depend on it, and then get surprised in those cases where it is wrong.

Besides, there is a laptop-detect package in Ubuntu:

 $ aptitude show laptop-detect
 Package: laptop-detect
 State: installed
 Automatically installed: no
 Version: 0.13.7ubuntu2
 Priority: optional
 Section: utils
 Maintainer: Ubuntu Core Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
 Uncompressed Size: 57.3k
 Depends: dmidecode ( 2.8-2)
Description: attempt to detect a laptop
laptop-detect attempts to determine whether it is being run on a
 laptop or a
desktop and appraises its caller of this.

So, it is certainly technically possible to tell if you're on a
laptop.Therefore gnome can make
decisions based on that fact.

On 01/01/11 15:48, gpk wrote:
OK.I agree it would not make sense as the desktop default.

 On 01/01/11 14:53, Milan Bouchet-Valat wrote:
We can't change PolicyKit permissions depending on whether the system is
a laptop or not. So we'd have to make the change for all systems, which
is not necessarily what people expect. And even laptops can be used e.g.
in kiosks or schools, where you don't want people to play with system
 settings.

I think the whole point will become obsolete anyway when GNOME 3
introduces automatic detection of location based on network. See
 http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/DateAndTime for a rough
mockup, which is partly implemented upstream.

time.
it just calls XMoveResize, and then the WM get the X message and do its job
(here, it probably does it in 2 times instead of 1).

[Bug 524967] Re: Screen brightness doesn't work on Vaio Y

2011-01-04 Thread Matteo Rossi
I have this kind of problem on a Sony VAIO CW2C5E (nVidia 310M). The
only way to control screen backlight is using nvidiabl module from

https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl

I can see gnome power monitor correctly interfaces with backlight module
because changing settings in gconf works. Anyway, Fn keys do not work.
In the log file there is no trace of key presses. Is there a way to
check gnome-power-manager association with those keys? Other Fn keys
(volume for instance) work correctly out of the box.

[Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus

2011-01-04 Thread smurf
What I can say is that I can change the order to old and new folders,
previously changed and never changed. I tried it several times.

As well in my previous post I said that me too could not reproduce
escatly the problem, on another computer, but I found another problem
that can be related to another bug and I reported the bug number.

It's obvious that there is something bad, bu I can't say much more, as

[Bug 697309] [NEW] Vinagre crashes X11 on maximize/moving between screens

2011-01-04 Thread Marcus Ilgner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

I'm not sure if this is really the fault of Vinagre but I couldn't find any
other application to replicate it.
My setup is a dual-head configuration on a AMD HD5750 card, fglrx driver.

When I try to move a maximized Vinagre window to another screen, X completely
crashes. Also unmaximizing and maximizing seems to have this effect, too.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 691686] Re: yelp closes unexpectedly

[Bug 697358] [NEW] regression in window list applet (wnck-applet) behavior

2011-01-04 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

While using wnck-applet 2.32.1 in Natty, there are some missing features
in the window list that were available in Maverick:

1. The buttons for windows in the window list can no longer be
rearranged using drag and drop. As the order of the buttons on the
window list is quite arbitrary (determined by launch time) having the
ability to reorder the buttons in a way that makes spatial sense (for
example - by desktop) is an important feature - that no longer works in
Natty. (for reference, the original behavior was introduced by the fix
to this GNOME bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302398 )

2. The buttons for windows in the window list no longer respond for
dragging things on top of them by activating the corresponding window.
This is a very useful feature that was introduced in GNOME 2 (after
being broken by the initial GNOME 2 release) by fixing GNOME bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80736.

Note - this issue relates to the Ubuntu Classical Desktop - I'm pretty
sure its not relevant to the new default Unity desktop.

[Bug 661652] Re: Totem poor video quality with deinterlacing

2011-01-04 Thread bastler
It seems as though gstreamer uses a very low quality algorithm for
deinterlacing (e.g. nearest neighbor from the looks of it), which makes
deinterlaced movies appear blurry and also oscillate up and down by one line.
It's certainly better than nothing, but I would opt for the use of a more
sophisticated default interpolation algorithm in deinterlacing. Most systems
nowadays can easily handle a more CPU-intensive algorithm, but there is no
obvious way to influence the default setting.

Re: [Bug 696115] Re: Timezone should not require superuser on laptop

2011-01-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Le mardi 04 janvier 2011 à 15:51 +, gpk a écrit :
Actually, on consideration, I don't think that automatic detection of
 the timezone
is a viable solution. It suffers from all kinds of potential problems
 like
What does it do if it's connected to a VPN?. If I connect via VPN
 to my
office in the UK when I'm in France, I'd get the incorrect time.
People using VPNs are not the majority, and we can disable automated detection
of timezone if we're connected over a VPN. Plus, we can also use GPS devices
when present.

Or, if I'm in the airport and I'm not yet connected to a network in my
 new location,
it will be silently giving me incorrect timezone information. It'll be
 telling me
what time it is in the other country. That's acceptable if you know
 you have to
set it manually, but people will depend on an automatic system, and miss
 their
 connecting flights.
If people are smart enough to change their timezone manually, they are smart
enough to understand their laptop still uses the previous timezone
because it has no way of finding out you've moved.

The trouble this will cause is a classic computer problem: it will be a
 system that is
smart enough to be right most of the time.Being mostly right, people
 trust it
and depend on it, and then get surprised in those cases where it is wrong.
So you'd suggest computers should always wait for users to do things manually,
just to avoid being smarter than them? The automated solution is better
than nothing. Anyway, discussing this here is pointless since it will be
implemented in GNOME and I'm not involved at all in this work.

Besides, there is a laptop-detect package in Ubuntu:

  $ aptitude show laptop-detect
  Package: laptop-detect
  State: installed
  Automatically installed: no
  Version: 0.13.7ubuntu2
  Priority: optional
  Section: utils
  Maintainer: Ubuntu Core Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
  Uncompressed Size: 57.3k
  Depends: dmidecode ( 2.8-2)
Description: attempt to detect a laptop
laptop-detect attempts to determine whether it is being run on a
  laptop or a
desktop and appraises its caller of this.

So, it is certainly technically possible to tell if you're on a
 laptop.Therefore gnome can make
 decisions based on that fact.
We can, but PolicyKit really isn't designed around the idea of changing
policies depending on that kind of setting. And the fact that your
computer is a laptop doesn't mean you want to grant this kind of
permissions to all users on the system.

[Bug 697416] [NEW] laptop does not thaw following hibernate -- twin laptop works fine

2011-01-04 Thread SaintDanBert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I reported this bug against gnome-power-manager for lack of a better
place to hang the problem. I use the gnome panel to request either
suspend or hibernate processing

I have two essentially identical laptops -- Lenovo Thinkpad X61tablet
(7764CTO) -- built six months apart. There are minor hardware
differences. Both run Ubuntu Lucid with current updates and similar set
of packages.

The laptop used to prepare this bug report fails to thaw after a
suspend-to-disk hibernate request.
I cannot discover if the hibernate processing is troubled resulting the the
failure to thaw.
Everything I can see tells me that the failing system performs a cold-start
instead of a restart-after-hibernate.

Both laptops will suspend-to-ram suspend and restart-from-suspend
resume without error.

Both laptops appear to complete suspend-to-disk hibernate processing
without error.

I confess that I don't know how to see much more of what is happening during
the power-on system start process.
I cannot interpret what I read in files from /var/log/pm* . I will attach them
to this bug as soon as I get a clean set without a lot of stray or repeated
events.

I welcome instructions about additional details to configure, collect
and report on this matter.

Thanks,
~~~ 0;-Dan
