[Bug 803992] Re: Natty update introduced crasher in xorg

2011-07-17 Thread Frans
I had the very same problem (CRITICAL: gdm_session_direct_get_username:
assertion `session != NULL' failed) in syslog, startx works), only the
line number in the message was different.

I found that my problem was caused by using autologin.
As a workaround I went to administration/user accounts and put the autologin
off for my account
After that a reboot brought be to the gdm sesssion selection screen. Now I can
specify the session to start and gnome classic does work for me (didn't try the
others).

You might get a message the first reboot that gnome failed or so.
Note that my gnome login screen is still on autologin; it is just uer
accounts/autologin that I turned off.
(btw turning it on again made the problem reappear, I hoped that after setting
a proper session things would work, but to no avail; guess it has to be kept
off for now).

Hope this helps for you guys too.

Frans

[Bug 807723] Re: Empathy does not start at login by default

2011-07-17 Thread Chris Roberts
** Description changed:

- Empathy always starts up with my status flagged as Offline. Sometimes I
- can click on my username in the notification area and click Available
- and all will be well for the current session. But the statuses are
- usually disabled (dark grey) until I go into Chat Accounts. In Chat
- Accounts all the accounts are set On but with the description Status
- is set to Offline. If I switch them to Off and then On again, they
- connect and all is okay for the current session.
+ Empathy always starts up with my status flagged as Offline in the
+ notification area.

- There seems to be no way of setting status to start-up online by
- default.
+ It seems that the reason for this is that Empathy is actually not
+ running and has to be added to Start-up Applications.
+
+ This was on a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04.

+ I believe that, once the user has set up his chat accounts, there should

[Bug 811602] Re: Nautilus crashes after cut and paste of more than one file.

2011-07-17 Thread Brendan Donegan
Hi,

My best guess here is that the problem is specific to VMWare. You may
feel free to start debugging yourself - I hope the guidelines in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures can be of use. Please report
what you find here. I'll leave the status as 'Incomplete' until someone
else using VMware can confirm.

Just a quick experiment I suggest is to use the terminal 'mv' command to
move files (cut and paste) rather than Nautilus. Does the mv command
give any error or cause the terminal to crash?

Thanks,

I've just upgraded to Natty from Maverick, and I'm also affected by this
bug. It didn't happen before, though I had compiz activated. I have a
Nvidia card and I'm using the binary drivers, in case it matters.

I confirm that the problem disappears if I use the Classic Desktop
without effects (i.e., no compiz).

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-07-17 Thread Aitor Guevara
My two cents:

I have the same black screen after resuming with an Intel Arrandale (i5)
chipset using Compiz. System is not frozen, it's just the screen not
coming back to live.

I've tried many things proposed in this and other threads, notably:

- upgrading the kernel to 2.6.39.0
- applying a patch to the intel xorg driver found in the xorg's bugtracker
- disable sync to vblank in Compiz OpenGL settings

The only one that has consistently worked is disabled sync to vblank.
Not a single black screens in weeks. None of the others has been a final
solution.

Hope that helps.

But if you minimalise the dialog, and later try to enter the password,

[Bug 766490] Re: [Natty-Beta2] Turning off laptop monitor turn off both monitors (laptop and external) on Vostro 3500

2011-07-17 Thread Carlos Contardo
I have the same problem, and i think some other people have it as well...
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Alienware M11x R2.
At the time, I can only use both monitors (laptop's and external) if both are
displaying the same thing. On alienware m11x, the external monitor can go up to
1920px resolution, but laptop monitor only to 1366px... At the time, the system
only allows me to go up to 1024px when both monitors are up...

[Bug 801180] Re: battery indicator is not displayed in oneiric

2011-07-17 Thread Steve Langasek
sudo apt-get install indicator-power should do it.

Whoops. I was about to say that this indicates (hah) a problem with the
seed dependencies and that something needs to make sure this gets pulled
in by default; but I see now that unity does recommend it, so it will be
pulled in by default for clean upgrades.

I have indicator-power installed now and still have no battery
indicator.

This is clearly a conspiracy to cover up the fact that oneiric consumes
10% more power at idle than natty did! :-)

[Bug 85961] Re: gnome-mount does not consistently display 'safe to remove' message

2011-07-17 Thread Danillo
I'm using Natty Narwhal and it looks like only randomly I receive the
safe to remove notification.

People coming from Windows are used to receiving this information every
time they ask for a USB drive to be removed. Lots of people are often
puzzled after I remove their flash drives from my computer and the
notification doesn't show up, and most of them think I took it out
without safely removing it.

Is there any config we can do to always display the notification?

If this is a design decision, it should be reviewed.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-07-17 Thread Michael Alexander
I updated my kernel to 2.6.38-10, which I had hoped would eliminate the
problem, but I just had the same freeze while the fuzzy flakes
screensaver was on. Going to Ctrl-Alt-F1 and using the command:

$killall gnome-screensaver

did not do anything at all. I haven't tried any other fixes yet. I use
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X, which is really not ideal and doesn't
always work - sometimes I can see the login screen, and other times it
loads the login screen but the screen stays black. I can manoeuvre the
mouse cursor to the bottom right corner, click, and use the down button
on my keyboard to select Restart, which I have to do from memory as I
can't see anything. The computer reboots fine when I do that.

Re: [Bug 811602] Re: Nautilus crashes after cut and paste of more than one file.

2011-07-17 Thread Anbarasan
Hi,

Ok. I will update when I find anything.

I tried mv in terminal and there is no problem (it does not crash). I
tried mv within home directory and between /home and /tmp. There is no
problem. It looks like the problem is with Nautilus.

Regards
Anbarasan

2011/7/17 Brendan Donegan brendan.done...@canonical.com

 Thanks,

 Bug description:
Nautilus crashes after cut and paste of more than one file.

I tried to cut and paste 2 files from a folder to another and the window
 closes (crash).
I do not see the problem with when I cut and paste 1 file.
I have tried with 4 files and the problem is seen.
But the cut and paster operation is successful. That is after crash I open
a new window and see that files are successfully moved.

The problem is not seen when I copy and paste. (Instead of cut and

[Bug 803239] Re: nibbles game fails to start

2011-07-17 Thread Josh Milthorpe
I have the same problem (Nibbles fails to start after upgrade to Natty),
although possibly a different bug. Crash was:

$ gnibbles
The program 'gnibbles' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length erro'.
  (Details: serial 137 error_code 16 request_code 65 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

GDB log (using above commands, modulo some typos) was:

Function gdk_x_error not defined.
Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) Breakpoint 1
(gdk_x_error) pending.
Starting program: /usr/games/gnibbles --sync

[Bug 783233] Re: Evolution can't correctly handle multiple accounts with same address

2011-07-17 Thread Nick Phillips
It's extremely annoying to have bugs that you've filed expire when
there's no indication of any expectation of further input, no indication
that anything is happening at all etc.

The bug as stated exists, and if something needs to be done to keep it
live here, then that should be notified rather than just letting it
expire.

Very frustrated - this seems to be a common occurrence.
