[Bug 1972991] [NEW] 22.04 Totem crashes on launch (segmentation fault)

2022-05-11 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Since upgrading (fresh reinstall) to 22.04, I have had issues with Totem
crashing.

I have not been able to pin down when it works and when it doesn't, as
playing the same videos seems to work sometimes and not work others.
After it crashes, trying to open it again normally does not work and
trying to launch totem from the commandline gives a segmentation fault.

[Bug 1972545] [NEW] Ubuntu Dock does not show indicator for open Firefox (after snap refresh?)

2022-05-09 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I am using the Firefox Snap on a fresh install of 22.04 (using defaults,
as far as I know).

Normally, Firefox shows an indicator in the Dock showing that it is
running (the orange dot) and gives the ability to choose between open
windows.

At the moment, I have Firefox windows open, but nothing is shown in the
Dock (as if it is closed).

My suspicion is that the snap was refreshed while running and this
confused Gnome Shell.

[Bug 1970185] [NEW] 20.04 does not remember preferred bluetooth headset microphone

2022-04-25 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

In Gnome's sound settings, it takes a sensible approach for my Bluetooth
headset speaker:
1) I set it as my preferred audio Output Device
2) I turn the headset off and it disappears, reverting to the built in speakers
3) I turn the headset on again and it switches back to using the Bluetooth
headset speaker

This sensible approach is not taken for the microphone. The same flow for the
microphone is:
1) Set the headset microphone as the default
2) Turn the headset off and it reverts to the internal microphone
3) Turn the headset back on and it stays as the internal microphone

I have attached screenshots in case they help explain.

2021-08-04 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Ah interesting, thanks Daniel. I did not realise Raspberry Pis were
doing Wayland by default.

Yes, it works as expected in xorg, but not in Wayland.

It's a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B - 8GB, in case that was not clear from my
logs.

[Bug 1892379] [NEW] Totem plays video scaled down on HiDPI screen on Wayland with multiple monitors at different fractional scaling

2020-08-20 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Focal Fossa with Wayland and two screens.
Display 1 is a 3840 x 2160 screen at 200% scaling
Display 2 is a 1920x1200 at 100% scaling

Fractional Scaling is on. Display 2 is my Primary Display.

When I play a video on Display 2, everything works as expected. When I
play a video on Display 1 (whether I drag it there or it is there all
along) then it plays taking up only the top-left corner of the window.

[Bug 1826550] [NEW] Fractional scaling options do not appear with multiple monitors

2019-04-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Using 19.04 disco with Wayland.

I have a HiDPI laptop screen (XPS13) and a normal DPI external monitor.

I have enabled the experimental fractional scaling support.

When no external monitor is connected, the fractional scaling options

the old whole number scaling options are displayed.

[Bug 1826547] [NEW] [Wayland] Display change "Revert Settings" window uses primary screen scaling factor

2019-04-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Using 19.04 disco with Wayland.

I have a HiDPI laptop screen (XPS13) and a normal DPI external monitor.
I have the laptop screen set to 200% and the external screen set to
100%.

If I set the primary display to the built-in display but have the
display settings window open on the external screen, then when I change
the scaling factor of the built-in display to e.g. 300% and click Apply,
the "Do you want to keep these settings" confirmation window appears on
the external screen, scaled by 300%. If the external monitor is the
primary display, it is always scaled normally at 100%.

Conversely, if the external monitor is set as the primary display, but
the settings window is on the built-in display, then when I change the
scaling factor of the external monitor to 100%, then this "Do you want
to keep these settings" dialog appears incorrectly scaled at 100%
instead of 200%.

[Bug 1826543] [NEW] [Wayland] Support multiple monitors with different scaling factors

2019-04-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Running 19.04 Disco with Wayland
Version 64ubuntu7

I have a HiDPI laptop screen (XPS13) and a normal DPI external monitor.
I have the laptop screen set to 200% and the external screen set to
100%.

When running the display solely on my built-in monitor, the dock is
correctly scaled to 200%. When running the display is running solely on
the external monitor, the dock is scaled to 100%.

When running both monitors at the same time, the scaling factor used for
the docks on both monitors is the scaling factor of the primary monitor:
so if that is the external screen is primary then the laptop screen
version of the dock is tiny; and if the built-in screen is primary then
the external monitor dock is huge.

I would expect the dock scaling factor to always match the scaling
factor of the screen that the dock is displayed on.

** Affects: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Summary changed:

- [Wayland] Scale the dock based on the scaling factor for that monitor

2017-11-12 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Marcus has said in the upstream bug:
"I released 2.5.16 some weeks ago.

the commit fixing this issue for backporting is
472a9461b457b4d08ecf10a93bb7f1efdc2124c0 "

It would be excellent if this could please make its way into Ubuntu.

[Bug 910964] Re: Cannot import photos from PTP Camera (Fuji X10)

2013-01-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Card with 282 photos, 7 videos.
1) Plug in camera, open Shotwell.
2) Error that camera in use by another application (pretty sure that didn't
used to happen in previous versions), unmount the camera.
3) Click on the camera, all thumbnails are shown.
4) Click Import All, hangs for a while, get the attached error.

[Bug 910964] Re: Cannot import photos from PTP Camera (Fuji X10)

2013-01-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
But then I tried shotwell again (without unplugging anything or resetting
anything) and it gave the same error, then back to gphoto2 and received the
following error (it hung as I was typing):
$ gphoto2 --shell
gphoto2: {/home/myusername} / cd s

*** Error ***
PTP I/O error

*** Error ***
An error occurred in the io-library ('Unspecified error'): The supplied vendor
or product id (0x0,0x0) is not valid.
ssto
ERROR: Invalid command.

I note that I imported all the photos on this camera from a card with 8
photos and it worked fine, so either more photos makes it worse, or
there is something else that makes it work sometimes and not others.

Either way, it does look like this hits gphoto2 as well.

[Bug 910964] Re: Cannot import photos from PTP Camera (Fuji X10)

This appears to be hitting me as well with a Canon Ixus 310HS (interestingly, I
had this same model before with no issues, then had to replace it and now I
do). Reported here:

get the lock error, on 12.04 it seems to hang on import after a few
files in Shotwell.

[Bug 595561] Re: Drag and drop of playlist on external device doesn't do anything

mode. You may like to try the bash script linked here:

[Bug 595561] Re: Drag and drop of playlist on external device doesn't do anything

2010-09-12 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Of course, actual support to drag and drop files would be much better.
The script is just a dirty workaround.

For MTP mode, the bug is here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=503188

There does not seem to be an upstream bug for supporting the Sansas in
MSC mode, but this would likely require code for each player. As I
understand things, MSC mode means that the device shows up just like a
USB key, so RB would need a database of where each player type stored
its playlists (it doesn't seem to matter on the Fuze) and what format is
used (.m3u on the Fuze), so that it can create the appropriate playlist
and put it in the correct place. It would be great to have, though, as
currently it looks like it should work, but just doesn't.

[Bug 511729] Re: Empathy didn't import contacts from gaim/pidgin

2010-02-19 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Right.

It seems to me that the problem is caused by having two IRC accounts
with the same username, which I have because I have one for Freenode,
Mozilla, Gnome etc.

If I select only one Luna-Tick IRC account (no matter which), the
import succeeds (though there is no user feedback at all and you have to
go into the Accounts to see it has worked -- is this normal?)

Please let me know if I can give any further information.

[Bug 511729] [NEW] Empathy didn't import contacts from gaim/pidgin

2010-01-23 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I am using Ubuntu Karmic. When I first opened Empathy, it asked me if I
wanted to import my (quite extensive) buddy list from Gaim. I said yes.
It didn't seem to do anything. When I opened it again, I think it asked
the same question, I again said yes and nothing seemed to happen.

Now it no longer asks the question and I don't have any accounts set up.

Please let me know what more I can give you.

get rid of the profile information so that it gives me the wizard again?

It obviously saw the Gaim account information, as it gave the wizard.

[Bug 441703] [NEW] System Testing video test doesn't work

2009-10-03 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I am running an up-to-date Karmic Beta. In the System Testing video

Opening water-and-wind.ogv from the Examples folder opens and
immediately closes. If I turn Visual Effects to None, it plays, but
with no video.

[Bug 234691] [NEW] [Hardy] Links to ntfs folders do not work properly on reboot

2008-05-24 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. I have a 70GB windows/ntfs partition on
this machine.

I click Places 70 GB Volume. The drive icon appears on the desktop.
I navigate to the folder that I want a link to. I middle-click drag to
the desktop and create a link. For that session, the link to the folder
works as expected.

When I reboot, the 70 GB icon is no longer on my desktop and the icon
for the link is different. If I click the link, I get an error that the
link doesn't work and do I want to move it to the trash. Another window
appears over the top of this saying that it is trying to open and click
cancel to cancel. (One cannot actually click this window until the
first error is clicked (even though it is underneath.)

From this point, clicking Places 70 GB volume gives an error:
Cannot mount volume
Unable to mount the volume.
mount_point cannot contain the following
characters: newline, G_DIR_SEPARATOR (usually /)

Here is a side thought that may solve this problem for some: why not
increase the frequency of battery polling as the level gets lower? There
is probably not a huge advantage in knowing each percent point change

under 20%.

[Bug 35223] Re: Laptop TFT monitor - brightness level is not saved

2008-04-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Just to expand the use case of this bug report:
I (using Hardy) like having the backlight dim on idle. That means that I have
the backlight at 100% and, after a period of no use, my backlight dims. That is
great. When I move the mouse it increases the backlight to 80% and I have to
increase it with the hotkeys.

This process occurs every period of idle.

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-04-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
This is the log of the battery running out when I am hardly using it (to
keep the CPU at 600MHz). I still get no warnings or anything and the
machine just dies.

This makes me think that something has changed since the RC. The RC gave
me several warnings before Hibernating. I doubt that my battery has
deteriorated that much over that time.

Re: [Bug 182474] Re: [Hardy Alpha 3] Broken launcher (normally Firefox) in default Gobuntu install

2008-02-26 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Mikko,

I think that you will find the reason for your error is that the
command for Firefox Beta 3 is firefox-3.0 rather than Firefox.
While that is an error, it is a separate error and I would expect it
to be fixed.

When Firefox 3 Beta becomes Firefox, I would expect the command for
it to be changed to firefox and the link should just work again.

[Bug 36544] Re: suggest to install the proper package if a plugin is missing

2008-01-14 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I would say that Firefox is now Fixed.

Epiphany is not. I just tested Hardy Alpha 3. Gobuntu uses epiphany by
default, so I tested this. Epiphany still exhibits this bug ( also
mentioned in Bug #32294 - that bug has an upstream link to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301465 ).

The goals of
http://live.gnome.org/Epiphany/FeatureDesign/PluginInstallation would
seem to be achieved by creating an epiphany add-on that provided the
equivalent functionality to that already present in Firefox.

In a default Gobuntu Hardy Alpha 3 install, the first of the three
launchers in the top bar (browser, evolution, help) is a broken

Re: [Bug 178994] Re: [Hardy Alpha 2] RB Move to Trash only removes from list if file on mounted (ext3) partition

2008-01-11 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
This is my testing partition, so /, /home etc. is all on the one
partition that I referred to as my main Hardy partition.

I also have a different Ubuntu install on the same machine. This error
occurs if I use the rhythmbox in the Hardy install to move to trash
a file that is on the ext3 partition of my stable (Gutsy) Ubuntu Home
partition.

Partition sda10 has Hardy's /, /home etc. and rhythmbox. I get this
error if I delete a file that is on sda8 (the Home partition of my
Gutsy install).

[Bug 30659] Re: should detect ekiga (voip) activity as activity and not lock screen

2008-01-04 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
(Actually, I think dimming the screen would be fine, but not turning
it off or locking it.)

Note that, with the current GPM, the screen does dim between when the
session is idle and when the screen is blanked. Of course, this doesn't
happen if the screensaver is inhibited because the session never becomes
idle. That means that, because voice-only calls inhibit the
screensaver, the screen will not dim. Currently, the inhibit options are
limited to display and computer sleep, AFAIK.

[Bug 180267] Empty trash before umount on removable disks should read unmount

2008-01-03 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using Ubuntu Gutsy.

If one deletes files on a removable USB key and then unmounts it, they are
given the message:
Would you like to empty the trash before you umount

While I think that something along the lines of disconnect would be
more user-friendly, the message should at least read uNmount instead

[Bug 106621] Re: Gnome Trash doesn't show deleted files on ntfs-3g partitions

2007-12-27 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I just deleted a file from a FAT32 partition and a couple of files from
an NTFS partition on Hardy Alpha 2, fully updated.

See the attached file - the file deleted from the FAT32 partition
(test.txt) displays if the Trash is clicked, but the icon for the trash
applet does not change and the files cannot be cleared by selecting
right-click Empty Trash (it is inactive). The files deleted from NTFS
have the same effect as the one deleted from the FAT32 partition, but
they do not even show when the Trash icon is clicked.

Should the description for this bug be changed to reflect that it
applies to more than just NTFS-3G, or do the problems with other
filesystems belong in separate bugs?

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2007-12-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I have created a tracker bug about this issue in Gnome Bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502609

The GStreamer and Totem bugs that this bug is currently linked to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350311
and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344415
are not really on point (in that, even if they are solved, this bug would not
be fixed). Could somebody please remove those bug watches and link this
Launchpad bug to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=502609 ? Then we can
correctly depend on that upstream bug's status etc.

That bug has links to the other two bugs anyway.

[Bug 43572] Re: Dell Laptops don't talk to HAL about brightness correctly

2007-12-04 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I just tested Hardy Alpha 1 on my Dell Inspiron 510m.

The slider now appears in GPM, but the settings on the slider do not
actually affect the brightness level.

On a related note, the brightness icon that appears on the screen when
one uses the hotkeys no longer shows the correct brightness. Instead, it
always shows an empty slider. When the plug is removed or inserted, the
slider displays a value, but it is not correct.

Let me know if there are any tests that I can run to help resolve this.

[Bug 150796] Force Quit should be run at a higher priority than normal applications

2007-10-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I am testing Gutsy Beta at the moment and, as has become horribly common
with the -intel driver and compiz, I often have my CPU fly to 100% due
to one bug or another.

This morning I had Firefox max out the CPU. I tried to close it with the
[x] and waited for the Force Quit dialogue to appear. 10 minutes later
it still hadn't done so.

My understanding is that applications can be run at different priorities
and that, were the Force Quit application run at a higher priority than
normal applications (such as Firefox), the Force Quit box would be
displayed promptly even if a normal-priority application was stuck in an
infinite loop.

At the moment it seems that Force Quit fails me when I need it the most!

[Bug 147092] [RFE] Keyboard Typing Breaks should have both breaks and micropauses

2007-09-30 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I think that the typing breaks feature in Gnome should allow the user to
set up micropauses and typing breaks.

Other RSI/OOS prevention tools (for example, Workpace) suggest a
micropause of 10 seconds every, say, 3 minutes and then a Rest Break of
5 mins or more every, say, half an hour. Incidentally, Workpace suggests
exercises during these Rest Breaks.

I suffer from RSI quite badly and I find that regular micropauses make a
much bigger difference than the longer breaks. I believe that is true
for a lot of people, but I cannot point to any research on it; it is
certainly what we are told by our office OOS prevention person.

An easy way to provide this feature would be to repeat the same options
that we currently have, so that the tab read:

Lock Screen to enforce typing breaks:
[ X ] Micropause of [10] seconds every [3] minutes
[ X ] Rest break of [5] minutes every [15] minutes (this is what we already
have)

At a later stage, it would be great to have exercise suggestions during
those breaks, but that is a different, long-term feature request.

This really belongs upstream, but I can't find my Gnome Bugzilla details
at the moment.

I click Places Network and use the excellent GUI to get to a folder on
my file server that I use all the time. Because I use it all the time,
I would like to have a link to there on my desktop.

I middle-click-drag the SMB shared folder from the Network Browser in
Nautilus over to my desktop and release. I select Link Here. I get an
error saying Error Unsupported operation while creating a link to
smb://ubun...ed%20Files.

I right-click the folder and select Make Link. I get the same error:
Error Unsupported operation while creating a link to
smb://ubun...ed%20Files.

It would be *great* if this worked, but if it doesn't then these options
need to be removed.

[Bug 135182] [Gutsy] lose changes in last x mins confusing if the user has never saved

2007-08-27 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am using Gutsy Tribe 5.

I like the new message warning the user how long it has been since they
last saved the document. I think that it is very confusing, however, if
they user has never saved at all.

Saying that the user will lose all changes in the last 30 minutes
implies that there are other changes that will not be lost (prior to 30
mins ago).

The message should stay as it currently is for all documents that have been
saved, but Untitled windows (and any windows where the user hasn't saved since
opening the file) should read:
All changes to this file will be lost
