[Bug 784007] [NEW] Nautilus, after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04, opens ftp bookmarks in default web browser

2011-05-17 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm sure this is a bug based on a library that Nautilus uses and not
actually Nautilus (so if someone who does triage could help, that would
be much appreciated) but after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 (on my
laptop and desktop), my computers will open my Nautilus ftp:// bookmarks
in my default web browser (Chrome).

So there's some switch that happens during the upgrade, possibly Chromes
fault, but I figured I'd report it under Nautilus because that's what
I'm using to open my bookmarks.

[Bug 569202] Re: WhiteOrchid.jpg replaces warty-final-ubuntu.jpg as login wallpaper

2010-12-03 Thread Brett Alton
I don't understand how Debian packaging works, but a file called ubuntu-
wallpapers-extra.xml.in has WhiteOrchid.jpg at the top of the file, with
the rest listed below. So for some reason, something is setting the GDM
to WhiteOrchid.jpg because it's the first on the list (probably
something to do with the call from setup.cfg).

I'm positive this is a one line fix, I just can't find it because I
don't understand packaging at the moment.

[Bug 585209] Re: .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice

2010-10-07 Thread Brett Alton
When I upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, the error still appeared. I created
a new user, moved over all my documents (but not my preferences) and the
error no long occurs. So it appears something corrupted a vital
preference but I'm not sure what. The user account that still has the
error on my machine still exists if you need further testing.

Lastly, when I right-clicked the document and said 'Open with
OpenOffice.org Writer' (if it was .odt) would open OpenOffice.org
Writer, but it wouldn't retrieve the file requested, instead just opened
'Untitled1'.

[Bug 585209] [NEW] .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice

2010-05-24 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, whenever I try and open an ODT or ODS
document over SFTP, (see [1]) , Archive Manager (or fileroller) is
opened instead. I right-click Properties Open With [tab] select
OpenOffice.org Speadsheet (for ODS) and OpenOffice.org Word Processor
(for ODT). I also change right click Open with Other Application... to
the appropriate application and it still seems to open with Archive
Manager.

Something really funky has been up with Nautilus over SFTP for some
time, because I'm had numerous bugs where Nautilus can't support
.htaccess[2] and other file types. It's like over SFTP, the file
association that I'm used to on my local hard drive just disappears.

[Bug 225827] Re: File search doesn't open .cs files

2009-07-21 Thread Brett Alton
I looked at the bug filed with Gnome and found out this information:

gnome-vfs is being replaced with gio. This should be fixed with the
patch

Patch applied on 3/16/09 to version 2.27.1.

says developer Dennis Cranston.

I'm just wondering if it is policy to constantly upgrade Ubuntu to fix
problems such as this one or if it's policy to fix the problems in the
current or targeted release that this bug is filed under.

I asked because this bug effects all versions of Ubuntu, from 4.10 to
9.04, but is fixed in 9.10 (which hasn't been and will not be released
until October 2009) only. Currently 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 are supported (as
6.06's desktop support was just dropped), meaning this fix has been
released in future versions of Ubuntu, but not past or present.

Just wondering what the mandate is on that. If my tone sounds harsh, I
apologize profusely; I just wanted to know Ubuntu's policy, a possibly a
link to it.

[Bug 394356] Re: Remove Open with and quotation marks from entries in Open with sub-menu

2009-07-06 Thread Brett Alton
I like the idea of this bug and what Marcus has done to fix the problem
(implementing David's suggestions), but why are we getting rid of the
Open with... submenu when only 2 programs are available? That's
changing what the user expects to see from one file to the next. To me,
the Open with... submenu should be there always, or never and not be
contextually dependent.

That's like changing the icon of the close button in Metacity from X
to O depending if it's maximized or not. The user should expect to see
the same result every time.

Thus, I would like to see
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28606444/noquotes.png implemented.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-25 Thread Brett Alton
I don't even like how Firefox has no labels on its buttons (e.g. Home,
Back, etc.) while the rest of Gnome (a.k.a. Nauitlus) has labels
(preferences set at System Preferences Appearance Interface
Text Below Items... even if Firefox ignores this).

The reason Firefox ignores these preferences (e.g. takes away the
text/labels) is for more screen space on the user's screen.

I'm in favour of getting rid of Firefox bookmark toolbar and bringing
back the text below the icons, bringing both Firefox and Gnome/Nautilus
in harmony.

The minimal Nautilus David is suggesting reminds me of the old style of
Nautilus Ubuntu used to ship with (see my Wikipedia screenshot at:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Ubuntu-
desktop-2-410-20080706.png)

(sorry if I sent this twice... Launchpad is acting up)

[Bug 130224] Re: gtkfilechooser save/save as dialog misplaces focus

2009-06-16 Thread Brett Alton
That's because you just clicked on a folder, so now the focus is with
the folders, not with the filename. The problem was previously that the
filename text field was never in focus when the dialog first opened. Now
it is in focus when it's first opened, but if you move the focus to a
folder (like you said) how is it supposed to know that you want to know
type the filename?

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-06-15 Thread Brett Alton
I would say make a variable grid if people would like to keep variable
sized icons, meaning make a grid that is 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128
and then the default sorta-grid that Nautilus has right now...

That's how KDE, XFCE, Windows 3.1 to 7, OS X all have it as Pelládi
Gábor said.

I know this idea is too complex for One Hundred Paper Cuts, but it's an
important usability bug I think.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-04-20 Thread Brett Alton
If that's true Sebastian, about nautilus having a grid, then what I
think would be a suitable workaround for this bug is an option that not
just aligns to a grid when clicked, but forces icons to persistently be
aligned to a grid, thus forcing new volumes to not overlap or new
folders to be hidden under existing icons.

See Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Windows 95 to 7 for this.

[Bug 306335] [NEW] gEdit ported to gio/gvfs, FTP support should be default

2008-12-08 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

According to gEdit's lead developer, pbor, gEdit was ported from gnome-
vfs to gio/gvfs in 2008/08 [1] meaning that gEdit 2.24 lost its
dependency on gnome-vfs and thus, bad FTP support.

FTP is currently disabled due to bad support via gnome-vfs, but this is
now much improved with gio/gvfs.

Can we see '/apps/gedit-2/preferences/editor/save/writable_vfs_schemes'
get 'ftp' added as a value by default in Jaunty and possibly backported
to Intrepid?

This will hopefully close bug #38066[2] and bug #51610[3].

2008-12-08 Thread Brett Alton
My apologies. I didn't do enough research on the topic. I thought I had
to add it after a fresh install, but I guess that was Hardy.

[Bug 292825] Re: Slider in rhythmbox causes crashes

2008-11-04 Thread Brett Alton
Yes, crossfading is what made it crash it looks like, even though it
wasn't changing songs but rather skipping to the middle.

However, now that I turned off crossfading and restarted, Rhythmbox
doesn't even allow me use of the slider (e.g. the slider will not skip
to where I place it, but rather only a minute change forward).

This happens on a fresh install as well.

[Bug 292825] Re: Slider in rhythmbox causes crashes

2008-11-03 Thread Brett Alton
Hi Sebastian,

Sorry, I must have my terms mixed up because Rhythmbox doesn't actually
crash, but rather freezes and never unfreezes even when left for 8
hours. The process doesn't seem to use any CPU and simply sits idle, so
the only way I can exit it is by force quitting it. This doesn't
activate apport, unfortunately.

Is there any other way I can add more information regarding this bug?
Would a video of the freezing help? Probably not, eh?

[Bug 292825] [NEW] [intrepid] Slider in rhythmbox causes crashes

2008-11-02 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

In a fresh Intrepid installation (using the 'free software only' option
out of curiosity), Rhythmbox crashes every time I use the slider when
playing a song.

The song can be .ogg, .mp3 or .wma; It doesn't matter. The songs play
well in Totem.

I am attaching a Valgrind log and a debugging log from Rhythmbox.

My box had a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy from 8.04 to 8.04.1 to
Intrepid beta and then was wiped to Intrepid final. All of my
preferences stayed in tact.

[Bug 287942] Re: Can not register .htaccess files to a program

2008-10-23 Thread Brett Alton
I upgraded from Hardy when Intrepid was in beta, maybe it is a carry
over from that?

I just found the problem. Not the root cause, but the specific problem
when it doesn't work.

When the .htaccess file is on my desktop, its mime-type is: plain text
document (text/plain). Thus, when I double-click it, gEdit opens it.

Yet an .htaccess file uploaded to an FTP server has a mime-type of
unknown (application/octet-stream). Thus, when I double-click it, this
error appears:

Could not display ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/folder/.htaccess.
There is no application installed for this file type

My apologies for not stating this earlier, it looks like I only receive
this error over FTP and not locally on my desktop. I edited the 'Could
not display' part of my bug above because it contained sensitive
information about my server, not realizing I was taking important
information out.

[Bug 138924] Re: New 'Documents', 'Pictures', etc. folders ignore current folders of the same/similar name

2008-10-22 Thread Brett Alton
Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?

Yes, there does not seem to be any detection code in 8.10.

To reproduce, you have to have a separate /home folder with 'documents',
'photos', etc. pre-made, then install Ubuntu 8.10 and you will see that
Ubuntu created 'Documents', 'Photos', etc., disregarding my current
folders of the same name, with different casing.

[Bug 257708] [NEW] Nautilus can't parse odd characters in usernames to entities

2008-08-13 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

A username with an 'at' (@) symbol in it fails to run in Nautilus:

Typing in a URL manually (ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]@domain/) results in this
error:

=
Couldn't display ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]@domain/, because the host could be
found.
Check that the spelling is correct and that your proxy settings are correct.
=

However, if you use Places Connect to Server, Nautilus can parse
unwanted characters into entities easily:
ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

Where:
u_part1 could equal 'brett'
u_part2 could equal 'launchpad.net'
domain could equal 'launchpad.net'

Can we get Nautilus to use the last 'at' (@) symbol to indicate domain
and have all other unwanted characters beforehand (in the username) be
converted?

2008-08-04 Thread Brett Alton
Sabastien, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but I'm

A fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1, however, does still have the same
error when popping in a 'Blank DVD-ROM Disc'.

It appears that when clicking 'Places CD/DVD Creator', Nautilus will
open burn:///.

However, when clicking on 'Places Blank DVD-ROM Disc', the following
error still occurs:

Could not open location 'burn:///'

[Bug 38066] Re: No possibility to save file over gnome-vfs ftp connection

2008-07-31 Thread Brett Alton
So then this is a gnome-vfs issue is it not? Isn't gnome-vfs being
replaced by gio/gvfs? Or do I have something mixed up?

If so, then upstream is porting gEdit to gio/gvfs for 2.24 and thus this
should be fixed for Intrepid, correct?

[Bug 242478] Re: Nautilus can not display FTP quite often

2008-07-28 Thread Brett Alton
No, sorry Sebastian, I was incorrect at assuming it was Nautilus.

Turns out the server has SCP and not SFTP capabilities, so everything I
was trying was failing. Turns out I need to use the 'fish' protocol in
KDE or WinSCP through Wine.

My apologies.

Also, I have a couple of other FTP logins that have a username with a
dot in the middle, and they work, so that defuncts my bad username case.

Please close.

[Bug 246969] Re: [Intrepid alpha1] gdmgreeter freezes in VMware Server 1.0.6

2008-07-16 Thread Brett Alton
I'm quite sure you're correct about snd_pcsp module and kernel 2.6.26;
The only reason why the title is 'gdmgreeter freezes in VMware Server
1.0.6' was because I couldn't pin point the bug at first, and that was
my first guess.

Can we change the name by any chance?

Seems to occur in alpha-2 as well. I haven't been able to login to
either of the alphas because of this bug.

I'm waiting for http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/ to show alpha2
and then I'll tell you if I can reproduce this bug in the second alpha.

[Bug 246969] [NEW] [Intrepid alpha1] gdmgreeter freezes in VMware Server 1.0.6

2008-07-09 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

In Intrepid alpha1, using a standard setup in VMware server 1.0.6 (which
I will attach), Intrepid fails to login after I enter in the correct
username and password. Specificially gdmgreeter, as far as I can tell,
gets stuck in an endless loop.

Proof: I went to tty1, ran 'top' went back to tty7, logged in, quickly
switched to tty1 where top and the whole computer froze. My host (Ubuntu
8.04) had a process (vmware-vmx) running at 50% with a dual-core
processor for an infinite amount of time. At this time, Intrepid was
unresponsive.

I'm attaching the VMware .vmx file while my next file will be the 'top'
screenshot showing where the guest froze.
