[Bug 495252] Re: Login with GNOME or Failsafe GNOME session goes black then back to login screen

2009-12-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
That file is actually provided by the gnome display configuration tools,
so moving this bug to gnome-control-center.

Perhaps your output names changed or something, and gnome-display-
properties is not handling the error that this causes.

[Bug 491162] [NEW] gdm does not start X unless remove tty-device-added KERNEL=tty7 from upstart gdm.conf

2009-12-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

[Problem]
gdm does not start up unless I remove the line and tty-device-added
KERNEL=tty7 from /etc/init/gdm.conf

[Background]
This is an Insprion 1420 I did a fresh install of the Karmic Beta on, updated
to Karmic Release a few weeks ago, and just now upgraded it to Lucid by doing
s/karmic/lucid/ in /etc/apt/sources.list and apt-get update; apt-get
dist-upgrade. There did not appear to be any errors during the upgrade.

On rebooting, xsplash showed the grey ubuntu logo, this faded out and I
found myself at the console login prompt. X started up fine via startx,
and gdm fired up fine via service gdm start. I rebooted a second time
and again was left at the console with no evidence gdm was trying to
start.

I noticed that hitting ctrl-alt-f7 did not perform a vt switch, so on a
hunch I commented out one line in gdm.conf:

#start on (filesystem
# and tty-device-added KERNEL=tty7
# and (graphics-device-added or stopped udevtrigger))
start on (filesystem
  and (graphics-device-added or stopped udevtrigger))

I don't know what that line means or why removing it made my system
work. Hope this helps give a clue.

[Bug 461918] Re: Evince fails to print this PDF

2009-11-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
I also find evince is not printing pdfs on ubuntu also amd64. The issue
I see seems closer to Clemens' bug - evince closes the print dialog and
displays no error so it *appears* the file went through correctly, but
the printer never seems to see it. I'm not sure this is the same as the
original bug report, because I don't see any hangs. Perhaps Clemen's
bug is distinct from Ketil's and should be reopened?

2009-11-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
A latter bug was found in getting the failsafe session up, since dexconf
no longer generates xorg.conf's, it also can't be used to generate the
failsafe mode's xorg.conf. I've uploaded a change which just generates
a standard xorg.conf (this is pretty much all dexconf was doing last
release anyway). So recommend the fix for bug 477149 go in along with
this one.

[Bug 474806] [NEW] New gdm does not have the FailsafeXServer config option

2009-11-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

gdm 2.20 had options in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf (in particular
FailsafeXServer) for specifying an action to take when X is failing to
start up. We attached a failsafe session (aka bulletproof-x) to be
invoked by gdm in these situations, which users could use to diagnose
and work around issues.

These options were implemented in the 'deal_with_x_crashes()' function
in gdm.c. Near as I can tell, this gdm feature was not included in the
new gdm rewrite, so we are seeing a regression here. The problem is
that whereas in the past the user would be dumped into a debugging
session, now gdm is simply trying multiple times, failing each time, and
then exiting (which then leads to the quite severe bug 441638).

Anyway, the end result is that we no longer have a debugging failsafe
mode available for users, they're just left with a non-functioning
system. Please either restore the missing functionality, or provide an
analogous mechanism to which we can attach a debugging session mode.

[Bug 441638] Re: upstart job keeps restarting a dying gdm

2009-11-04 Thread Bryce Harrington
I realized by connecting to the machine via ssh that actually everything is
running, ie. GDM, X, Pulse, whatever you just don't get to see anything which
is due to a completely out of range resolution of horizontal 268kHz, vertical
 281Hz.
I have now completely emptied /etc/X11/xorg.conf and voila, it works!

Please note that people experiencing this bug have two bugs, first
something which causes X to fail, and second an issue with gdm where it
keeps trying to restart X and causes flickering. This bug report
focuses only on the second issue, the gdm blinking. For the other bug,
please file a separate bug report (hint: use 'ubuntu-bug xorg' to do
it).

firebird, in your case I would be interested in seeing the xorg.conf
before and after your edits in addition to the stuff ubuntu-bug
collects, so we can see what exactly needed changed to make it work.
However, what you describe sounds similar to many other bug reports we
already have so perhaps is just a dupe of a known issue. Hard to say
without seeing a complete report.

[Bug 465717] Re: wrong monitor dimension shown

(calculate it yourself):

It seems your monitor manufacturer's engineers report different numbers

2009-10-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
The Xorg.0.log would be interesting to see, however I suspect chances
are small that a relevant error message will appear there.

Another debugging technique which might be more fruitful is to use
xtrace. Xtrace sits in between the client and X server, and gives you a
stream of all the commands going back and forth, so you can see where
the communication is failing.

[Bug 441638] Re: gdm main process keeps dying and respawning on reboot after karmic beta install

2009-10-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
It appears with the new gdm, it no longer triggers FailsafeServer after
N failed tries. Instead, gdm simply exits after 5 tries.
Unfortunately, at that point upstart notices gdm exited and restarts it.

This is fairly easy to reproduce by doing 'echo foo
/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and rebooting.

[Bug 441638] Re: gdm main process keeps dying and respawning on reboot after karmic beta install

2009-10-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'd concur with comment #7. That X fails to start is unfortunate, but
that's a situation that can happen for a variety of reasons (a simple
typo in xorg.conf can prevent it starting for instance); but typically
gdm would dump you into some sort of failsafe mode so you could debug
the problem. Now gdm simply exits after a few tries, and restarts; the
user experience is a lot of flickering and no way to break in to do
debugging.

Ideally, gdm should fire up the failsafe stuff after failing. If that
can't be done, then at least it should dump out to the console login,
rather than getting stuck in a loop.

I think this latter option could be achieved by simply making the gdm
upstart job not restart gdm on failure, or to try it a few times but
give up if gdm keeps exiting in a short period of time.

[Bug 328980] Re: xkbcomp errors should be displayed

2009-10-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
The core problem this is trying to address is that currently errors
occur in the underlying code, but due to the nonspecific error message,
the bugs are all getting lumped together and not even getting triaged
properly, thus the bugs are failing to get fixed.

Ultimately, the real solution is to get those underlying bugs fixed so
this error dialog shows up less frequently. By making the error message
being hit be more explicit, it will help to achieve this goal.
Currently a lot of these errors are not getting investigated because all
we have to go on is Some generic error occurred.

[Bug 428477] Re: Display configuration: a new version of displayconfig-gtk is necessary

2009-10-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
Why are the xorg developers silent on this issue?

I was out on paternity leave the month of september. Also keep in mind
we get hundreds of bug reports against X.org every week; I'd like to
respond to every one personally but that would take far more time than I
actually have.

Therefore I request the xorg developers, to make displayconfig-gtk
available

While I did help on maintaining displayconfig-gtk in Hardy, X.org does
not actually maintain GUI configuration tools, rather that is the
jurisdiction of GNOME/KDE/etc. displayconfig-gtk was proposed for
addition to GNOME, but they refused it in favor of developing their own
applet. Thus, any missing features in the current applet that
displayconfig-gtk could do, is rather a wishlist bug against the applet.
I don't know if/when they will fix it, but if this issue really bothers
you I'd encourage you to talk to GNOME or even send in your own patch to
them (if you do, take a look at xkit which has some logic for
manipulating xorg.conf files.)

As far as resurrecting displayconfig-gtk, it would require a fairly
massive reimplementation work to make it support Xrandr. This is
outside the scope of xorg, and a WONTFIX from the displayconfig-gtk
project since it is no longer being maintained.

Hi jonathan.ernst,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you

[Bug 397839] Re: Screen randomly goes off in karmic

2009-09-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Not sure why this is still open against xorg-server; both the requested
patches have been in xserver for quite some time:

xorg-server (2:1.6.3-1ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low

  * Add 183_dont_reset_event_time.patch:  Upstream cherrypick.
Fix another random display blanking issue. When we turn off DPMS with
DPMSModeOff and do dixSaveScreens, don't reset the event time else
session clients using IDLETIME will be reset.
See http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/08/17/

xorg-server (2:1.6.3-1ubuntu2) karmic; urgency=low

  * Add 182_negative_sync_transitions.patch:  Upstream cherrypick.
Fix random blanking display when system is not idle, caused by
mishandling of negative transition triggers in XSync.
(LP: #397839)

[Bug 419434] Re: X server fails with DRI : drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22

2009-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command in a terminal after
reproducing the issue, and it it will automatically gather debugging
information needed for this bug:

  apport-collect 419434

Also, it sounds like this bug is an error-exit. For this we will need
to see the appropriate gdm log file, found in /var/log/gdm/ - pick the
one that includes the error message, or just include all the recent logs
if in doubt.

I may need to have you collect a backtrace for Xorg, but for now let's
start by seeing what's in the gdm log exactly.

[Bug 329071] Re: [R500 X1400] 1680x1050 resolution not available anymore after unpluging a beamer

2009-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
[This is an automatic notification.]

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908
/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

[Bug 419781] [NEW] Dialog displays writing to cdrom when unmounting a read-only cd

2009-08-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

[Problem]
A status throbber shows up in certain circumstances when unmounting a cdrom,
that indicates it is writing to the device, when the device in question is
read-only.

[Discussion]
In looking at a series of CDs, inserting and ejecting each in turn, once and a
while (seems like 5-10% of the time), it will briefly display a status widget
that indicates it is writing to the device. This is not correct because the CD
is read-only (indeed the drive is just a CDROM, no write abilities at all).

[Bug 419450] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't show 'Eject' option reliably

2009-08-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

[Problem]
The 'Eject' command doesn't show up reliably after a CD has automounted in the
cdrom.

[Steps to Reproduce]
0. Open nautilus to the /media directory
1. Insert a CD
2. Wait until CD has automounted (directory listing shows up in a separate
nautilus window)
3. In the /media window, right-click

Expected behavior: Unmount and Eject are shown in the menu
Actual behavior: Unmount is shown, but Eject is not.

[Workaround]
From the /media window, doubleclick on the cdrom icon, to navigate to the
cdrom. Then click Back. Now the context menu includes 'Eject'.

[Bug 366076] Re: DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending on CD eject attempt

2009-08-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm able to confirm this against karmic with current updates as of Aug
25th. Steps I used to reproduce:

1. Open nautilus to /media
2. Insert disk, wait for it to automount (new window pops up)
3. In /media window, right click. Unmount is shown, but Eject isn't (bug
419450)
4. Click Unmount. Dbus error message is shown.

seb128, this bug looks worthwhile to send upstream. At the least, the
error message could be made less cryptic since it's going to be quite
easy for end users to run into.

[Bug 389968] Re: [i965] blank screen with flickering cursor upon resume from suspend in GM965

Sounding like problem has been narrowed to the screensaver, so closing
driver task.

[Bug 403555] Re: [i965GM] menu display problem with intel driver

2009-07-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
Rather it sounds like this is a gtk bug, if menus in those non-gtk apps are
working okay.
If you find that you can eliminate the problem by downgrading to a different
version of the video driver, you're welcome to reopen the -intel task, but
please indicate the version and provide additional evidence that it is a driver
bug.

[Bug 401107] Re: Software runs as root

2009-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Upstream video drivers require running as root in order to set the video
modes.

Some video drivers upstreams (-intel, -ati, -nouveau) are working on
moving mode setting to the kernel, which in theory would enable X to run
as non-root some day, but consider that Ubuntu works with a range of
other video drivers from common ones like -nvidia to rarer ones like
-geode, -psb, and -openchrome, all of which are popular in certain user
segments but none of which have plans to implement KMS any time soon.

You probably want to swap steps 4 and 6, since 6 can overwrite the
changes in step 4.

Beyond that, I'd really suggest you file a bug report, since issues
reported only in forums tend not to get developer attention. See
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on making good bug reports.

[Bug 328760] Re: [i965gm] system unresponsive after recovery from screensaver

2009-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
testing.
