[Bug 293311] Re: nautilus thumbnails files on a mounted NFS share

2011-08-18 Thread Dennis Sheil
nfs shares are usually local

We have a lot of ambiguity with the word local here, which is the entire
problem. I'm not sure what local means in nfs shares are usually
local - on the local host? On the same subnet? In the same location?
In the same organization? In the same city? Furthermore, on what basis
are these assumptions being made, I've seen plenty of NFS shares from
machines in say, Tokyo or London to machines in New York. The basis for
making this bug invalid is ambiguous, and where it is not ambiguous I
don't know on what basis someone would say NFS shares are usually local.
And even if NFS shares were local 75% of the time, whatever local means,
what would that have to do with the failure rate the other 25% of the
time.

I assume local in this specific context means whatever GIO/GVFS for
Nautilus considers local.

Upstream did implement it this way, but I think they should be alerted
to this ambiguity. I had the same problem myself today before I came
across this bug report.

Even if they do choose to let it remain, I think there should be thought
into changing this locally. Isn't the entire point of the Ubuntu
desktop, as opposed to say Debian or Gentoo or whatever, to be user-
friendly? I've been a professional Unix systems administrator since the
mid-1990s, and I can't make heads or tails by what Nautilus means by
local, even looking over the code and documentation. So what hope has
the average Ubuntu user?

I will be reporting this upstream.

[Bug 744067] Re: Not able to open PDF file.

2011-04-05 Thread Dennis Sheil
The problem is it not with evince, but with the PDF. It is a bad PDF.

A file of the same name - http://gps-gimp-paint-
studio.googlecode.com/files/GPS_Gimp%20Paint%20Studio%201_2%20manual.pdf
, works properly. It is also identical with your file for the first
3047386 bytes, but your file improperly terminates (as if in a download
that was cut short early) while the other one goes on for another 123202
bytes, where it closes up properly with an EOF and the like.

I suggest you download the file again from http://gps-gimp-paint-
studio.googlecode.com/files/GPS_Gimp%20Paint%20Studio%201_2%20manual.pdf
or some other location.

[Bug 622973] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV in type_get_qdata_L()

2011-03-28 Thread Dennis Sheil
Dennis, this was marked as Triaged, sent upstream and if you look at
the upstream report the developers are working on it, so why [are you]
marking it as a duplicate of a non triaged one? [T]hat doesn't make
sense[,] please do not do it. The other bugs should be marked as a
duplicate of this one. [D]oing that now. [T]hanks all.

I'm sorry, I did not realize that what made sense was for you to create
a new bug report when two earlier ones existed. With the original
report having a full backtrace with debug symbols before your third
report was created. I did not know that it made sense to instead make a
redundant third bug report, triage that and send that one upstream, and
that people should somehow intuit that this was now the report that
earlier bugs should be made a duplicate of. I had been under the
impression that the earliest bug report would be the one later bug
reports would be made duplicates of. I was under the impression that
when a bug report with full backtraces with debug symbols exists, that
you do not make a redundant bug report and decide to triage that one and
send that one upstream.

I can not find reference to your system of bug reporting in Ubuntu's
documentation, could you kindly point me to where it is referenced? If
it is not there, could you please update Ubuntu's documentation with
regards to your system of bug reporting, because you are right, I can
not make sense of it.

Epdfview, which depends on the poppler library, crashes on this page as
well. So it is not a problem with evince, but with poppler (or
poppler's dependency on cairo, or cairo's dependency on pixman,
nonetheless it is not more universal than evince and we are working our
way down the library dependencies).

[Bug 708344] Re: evince fails to load postscript ps files

2011-02-02 Thread Dennis Sheil
Regarding the fatal internal error message, stepping through evince
loading this PS file, we get

(gdb) step
301 in /build/buildd/evince-2.32.0/./backend/ps/ev-spectre.c
(gdb) step
fatal internal error -100
302 in /build/buildd/evince-2.32.0/./backend/ps/ev-spectre.c
(gdb)

Those lines in ev-spectre.c are
   301  spectre_page_render (ps_page, src, data, stride);
   302  spectre_render_context_free (src);

This is a reference to the libspectre library. Which is where the error
message comes from. In libspectre-0.2.6, in the file spectre-gs.c, on
line 47 we have the fatal internal error error message.

[Bug 711943] [NEW] evince spits out glib errors on 11.04 when closing

2011-02-02 Thread Dennis Sheil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

With 11.04, evince closes properly when hitting the X on the upper
left of the application. it closes fine with Alt-F4. It closes fine
with a right click on the application top bar and choosing close from
the menu.

It does not close properly with the new Unity stuff with the menu bar
appearing at the top of the screen. When closed in that manner the
command line spits out:

[Bug 711943] Re: evince spits out glib errors on 11.04 when closing

2011-02-02 Thread Dennis Sheil
This bug is not a duplicate of #708404:

* 708404 has a segmentation violation and crashes, 711943 does not have a
segmentation violation
* 708404 does not spit out glib errors, 711943 does
* 708404 occurs whether the window is closed by hitting the X on the top left
of the application window, closed by typing Alt-F4, by right click on the
application menu and scrolling to close, or by going to the new top Gnome menu
and closing by File - Close. 711943 only occurs when going to the new top
Gnome menu and closing by File- Close.
* 708404 occurs at one point in the code, having to do with linearization.
711943 occurs in another part of the code.
* Most importantly 708404 has a patch which will fix the segmentation fault it
reports. This patch does not fix the 711943 problem.

If the patch for 708404 is implemented, the 711943 bug will still
remain. The bugs are not duplicates.

[Bug 669211] Re: Xpdf segfaults on start in libpoppler.so.7

2010-11-14 Thread Dennis Sheil
This poppler library works with this PDF with the Evince viewer. This
poppler library works with this PDF with the Epdfview viewer. It only
doesn't work with Xpdf. Also - Xpdf in Meerkat is not dependent on the
poppler library by default. As Xpdf changed its behavior and broke, I
am putting this in the xpdf queue. I have verified that Xpdf does break

[Bug 667517] Re: font spacing issues in evince

2010-11-01 Thread Dennis Sheil
Bug 664061 is different in some ways. While typing in the document,
things look OK for the 664061 PDF in evince and in Adobe Reader 9.
Also, Adobe Reader 9 can produce a good print or postscript file from
that PDF, while evince does not. So evince can handle rendering and
typing for that PDF, as can Adobe Reader 9. For 664061, evince can not
handle printing (or transforming into a postscript file), while Adobe
Reader 9 can. For this PDF, things do not look OK when typing in either
evince or Adobe Reader 9. I am curious if the PDF works in any context
- on Windows or MacOS, or if it is broken. I do not have a non-Linux OS
to test it on at the moment.

[Bug 627757] Re: pdftotext crashed with SIGSEGV in AnnotGeometry::draw()

2010-10-31 Thread Dennis Sheil
This causes a segmentation fault for me with the poppler-utils package
currently in Maverick Meerkat, 0.14.3-0ubuntu1.1, but when run against
pdftotext from the latest poppler git commit, there is no segmentation
fault. So presumably this has been fixed upstream already.

[Bug 667517] Re: font spacing issues in evince

2010-10-30 Thread Dennis Sheil
I opened this with both evince and with Adobe Reader 9 (version 9.3.4)
on Maverick Meerkat. For both programs, text inserted in the field
below Vertragsnummer seems to be about half or so what it should be. So
this PDF not only does not display with Evince on Meerkat, it does not
display with Adobe Reader 9 on Meerkat.

Do you know of any reader or platform which displays this PDF in a
manner in which text inserted below Vertragsnummer is not half what it
should be?

[Bug 638013] Re: Can't play Quadrapassel

2010-09-25 Thread Dennis Sheil
I launched quadrapassel a few weeks ago and it worked, now it does not.
I have been installing all the Maverick Meerkat package upgrades for the
past few weeks and am assuming it is a regression error, if not in the
gnome-games package then in a package it depends on.

I am launching it in a very vanilla fashion - I am sitting at my 10.10
desktop, go in the default GNOME to Applications - Games -
Quadrapassel and it fails to load. I then go to a gnome-terminal and
try to run it from there, and the message I see is shown below. This
seems to be failing for people whether or not they have X11 forwarding,
as the original bug submitter says he has turned on. I do not have X11
forwarding turned on, yet it is still broken for me.

I asked a few people on the IRC channel #ubuntu+1 if they could launch
the program, the two that tried could not. I am assuming this is
failing for almost everyone, I have not found an up-to-date 10.10 system
that quadrapassel works on.

Here is the error I'm getting.

$ quadrapassel

(quadrapassel:2545): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to make the stage
window 0x485 the current GLX drawable

(quadrapassel:2545): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to make the stage
window 0x486 the current GLX drawable

(quadrapassel:2545): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to make the stage
window 0x485 the current GLX drawable

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'quadrapassel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 69 error_code 9 request_code 137 minor_code 12)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

2010-09-25 Thread Dennis Sheil
I downloaded an old version, gnome-games_2.31.4-0ubuntu1, and
quadrapassel seems to be broken in that as well. It probably broke on
some changed library it depends on.

[Bug 628263] Re: evince crashes with SIGTRAP when filling form in

2010-09-08 Thread Dennis Sheil
As noted in bug report #622344 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/622344 ), a fix
for a bug that was crashing evince was implemented in evince package
2.31.90-0ubuntu2.

I had reproduced this bug several times prior to that package release.
It would happen every time I tried to fill in the second field. After
upgrading to the newest version of evince with the fix, I have not
encountered the bug and can not reproduce it. The bug seems to have
been fixed.

[Bug 602828] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_widget_get_toplevel()

2010-09-08 Thread Dennis Sheil
I can reproduce this at will.

First I open evolution to a date on which I already have an appointment
scheduled. Either via the Clock (calendar) applet on my toolbar, or the
command that invokes, evolution
calendar:///?startdate=20100923T04Z, or other appointment days I've
opened where it eventually crashes as well.

Then I copy from within the appointment. I can select all and copy, or
highlight one letter and copy, or whatever. It doesn't matter what
field - summary, location, both will eventually crash it.

So then I close the appointment out, then close evolution out.

Boom! Segmentation fault.

When I do it in gdb, I get the same stacktrace as is attached here.

[Bug 620522] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_is_value_type()

2010-08-23 Thread Dennis Sheil
I have the same problem. When running gnome-appearance-properties (from
the gnome-control-center package), in the visual effects tab I switch
the visual effects state from normal to none. I guess my gnome-terminal
is unable to handle this change.

I've installed the debug packages for gnome-terminal and for some of the
involved libraries, and have attached a trace as requested. It is
similar to the original trace for this report, but with the debug symbol
packages my trace is more robust.

Not sure of everything as to how to reproduce, I have a bunch of windows
open in my first workspace, I use an xterm to open the gnome-terminal
session I'm debugging, then I clone (Open Terminal on the gnome-termnal)
it three times and put a terminal in each workspace. At the top of
workspace one and four are open terminals. In workspace four I open
gnome-appearance-properties, make the switch, and segmentation fault
happens in my gnome-terminal window. It does not seem to be able to
handle this switch gracefully.

Trace with more debug symbols attached.

[Bug 620522] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_is_value_type()

2010-08-23 Thread Dennis Sheil
While looking through this, I realize there was another library that it
would be good to have debug symbols for, libvte9, so I installed the
debug symbols for that, reproduced the crash and attached the trace
here.

The last trace within gnome-terminal before it goes off to the libraries
is this one:

#9 0x0042460d in terminal_screen_realize (widget=0x9de0f0) at
terminal-screen.c:301
priv = 0x9ded60

If we look at the code after this line in terminal-screen.c we get -

   301GTK_WIDGET_CLASS (terminal_screen_parent_class)-realize (widget);
   302
303/* FIXME: Don't enable this if we have a compmgr. */

The terminal_screen_realize function has six statements. Before the
last two is this Fixme comment. So I guess that this has been a problem
is already known, or at least, this has been a problem for something
similar before.

[Bug 620522] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_is_value_type()

2010-08-23 Thread Dennis Sheil
Another thing I should mention - when in gnome-appearance-properties and
switching the visual effects state from normal to none, if I have
various windows of different programs in the different workspaces, they
all wind up in the first workspace after the switch, as does my view.
This seems to be more of a problem with the gnome-control-center package
than gnome-terminal though. People should be able to turn off visual
effects without being pulled to the first workspace, along with every
other program.

[Bug 622582] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties: visual effects change combines workspaces

2010-08-23 Thread Dennis Sheil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In Meerkat, when in gnome-appearance-properties, in the Visual Effects
tab, changing visual effects from normal to none results in all windows
in all workspaces to wind up in the first workspace. So workspace one
has every window that was opened, and all the other workspaces are
empty. This behavior seems to play a role in crashing gnome-terminal's
which are open as well ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-terminal/+bug/620522 ). The preferred behavior would be that one
could turn off visual effects without gnome-appearance-properties, or
some function it calls, mucking with the workspaces as it does.

[Bug 605577] Re: Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title

2010-08-22 Thread Dennis Sheil
I posted some information in bug #622082 but I made it a duplicate of
this.

The funny characters in a cube printed are Unicode characters.
Specifically, Unicode Shavian characters - an alternative method of
displaying the English language, invented by George Bernard Shaw.

I ran gnome-language-selector, switched my language to Spanish (from
Spain), restarted Gnome and the bad toolbar went away, the proper
Spanish characters were displayed in yelp. So this is a problem that
those with a Spanish language environment are not having, but those with
an English environment are having. I should note that I only chose
Spanish as I understand a little of it, I'm sure other languages are
functioning.

The problem is English is being displayed in a Shavian mode instead of
as en_US or en_GB or the like. In fact, it's not even being displayed
in Shavian mode - most systems don't have the Shavian characters
installed, so it just comes out as Unicode numbers in a box gibberish.

When I look at the output of msgunfmt /usr/share/locale-
langpack/en/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo, I see the line

Language-Team: Shavian ubuntu-l10n-en-s...@lists.launchpad.net\n

The msgstr's in the lines are in Shavian English.

In fact, when I move the yelp.mo file to yelpUSERDISABLE.mo - the
problem with the weird characters goes away

I did an apt-get source yelp and within the po subdirectory are three
English po files, which I believe are Canadian, British and Shavian po
files. I guess the Shavian file got changed into a binary catalog file
and was pushed into that directory as the default for English, and that
catalog overrides the default. Because when the binary catalog is
disabled by moving the file, the problem goes away.

OK, I have found the problem. It is in the package language-pack-gnome-

$ dpkg -l language-pack-gnome-en-base|tail -1
ii language-pack-gnome-en-base 1:10.10+20100817
 GNOME translations for language English

When I do an apt-get source language-pack-gnome-en-base, I get the
source, in which is the file data/en/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.po which, other
than the header and footer, is identical to
./data/e...@shaw/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.po .

My solution would be to replace data/en/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.po with the
more standard yelp.po from the data/en_GB subdirectory. There are other
solutions as well.

2010-01-20 Thread Dennis Sheil
This used to not be a problem with poppler, but after a code commit on
November 1, 2008, it stopped working. The commit that broke this dealt
with Type 3 fonts, so I suspect the 1/2 fraction is a type 3 font and
that commit broke it.

[Bug 507679] Re: evince mostly un-responsive, without CPU load

2010-01-14 Thread Dennis Sheil
I was going to say temporarily move your .recently-used.xbel file in
case it is trying to reload a broken PDF file, but if this is happening
with or without argument, that shouldn't be a problem. The problem you
describe only happens to me when it is called without argument and tries
to load a broken PDF.

Was it fine with Karmic and then broke, or was it like this from the
first time you tried to run it?

One thing that might help diagnose this is to type

script evince.out

and then

strace -tt evince

Then, if Force Quit pops up do that, or go to File - Close. Then
hit Control-D in the terminal window. Then attach the output here.

For me evince's UI shows up in about a second, on a less powerful
machine. With strace running, it takes about five seconds - and that is
on the strace delay.

[Bug 459569] Re: The current version (2.28.1) does not render some documents that worked perfectly under earlier versions.

2009-12-25 Thread Dennis Sheil
This is the same bug as #497175. I know it is because I tried to read
the attached file here with the current 9.10 evince version (2.28.1)
linked against four poppler libraries - the latest development poppler
library, the current 9.10 poppler library (0.12.0), the poppler library
after the bad commit to poppler on July 26, 2009 that breaks this
functionality, and the commit just prior to that bad poppler commit.

I am moving this to the poppler section as this is not a problem with
evince per se, but a problem with poppler which evince is dependent on.
I am also linking to the bug report of this on poppler's bug tracking
page at freedesktop.org.

I've posted a patch against the current poppler development library on
freedesktop.org. The patch simply pulls out the July 26, 2009 bad code
committed to the drawImageMaskPrescaled method and replaces it with the
method code before that commit. The original bad commit tried to
replace the old, working code with new code using the (as of then) new
cairo functionality for drawing outside of a pattern. So either the
poppler maintainers will commit my patch, get it working, and then at
some point try to re-implement that new cairo functionality, or they
will simply try to fix the problem in their original bad commit.

To put it more simply, my patch fixes this problem. As far as the patch
getting committed to poppler, or getting downstream to Ubuntu, I've
talked about that above.

** Package changed: evince (Ubuntu) = poppler (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- The current version (2.28.1) does not render some documents that worked
perfectly under earlier versions.

[Bug 499570] Re: menubars not rendering

2009-12-24 Thread Dennis Sheil
You have three versions listed in your version table. I think the
problem is you should only have two. The second version
(2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-
updates/main Packages) should be the one you're using . You appear to
have pulled down a personal package archive version of evince rather
than the one that is in karmic main.

How are you pulling down updates, via apt? What is the response when
you do grep -i ppa.launchpad.net /etc/apt/sources.list. If you have
ppa.launchpad.net in your /etc/apt.sources.list file, you should
probably comment it out with an octothorpe (#) in front of those lines
which contain it. Then you may want to do remove and re-install the
evince package.

[Bug 497175] Re: This program do not read every pdf files. I can send an exemple. Give me an adress.

2009-12-22 Thread Dennis Sheil
The code that caused this problem has been found. It was poppler commit
512b2c654fd80c83b82e7adc828a478a18de17ab on July 26, 2009. You have
poppler 0.12.0 as a dependency, and this commit was made prior to that
release.

I posted a patch against the latest poppler source on freedesktop. Now
that the cause is known, any version of poppler after the bad commit
should be easy to patch. If my patch is committed to poppler,
eventually there will be another poppler patch, where what the
512b...17ab was trying to do will be put in - correctly. Until then,
people can revert to the old way if they want.

[Bug 497175] Re: This program do not read every pdf files. I can send an exemple. Give me an adress.

2009-12-21 Thread Dennis Sheil
Problem is in either libpoppler-glib4 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 or libpoppler5
0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 dependency, not evince. Evince works for sample pdf
when linked against pre-0.11.2 poppler libraries. ePDFView acts in the
same manner, working in earlier libraries, breaking on popper
post-0.11.1 libraries, further pointing to poppler

[Bug 436197] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in TextWord::TextWord()

2009-12-19 Thread Dennis Sheil
As stated in the gnome-bugs thread that is linked to in the remote bug
watch panel, a fix was committed to the code base earlier this month. I
downloaded the current poppler code via git and ran evince against that
library for the problem files mentioned. With the new poppler library,
there is no more segfault, the bug has been successfully fixed upstream.
