[Bug 393808] Re: Allow displaying different virtual desktops on different devices

2012-06-12 Thread frederik.nnaji
the problem this would help solve would be for example to easily assign a full
screen application, be it a webapp in a browser or a presentation, to a
seperate display output channel, all this being done by an ordinary user with
no expert knowledge on a desktop window management level.
thank you.
problem solved.

the alterternative would be to write xorg.conf from scratch, and that
means the user has to work with the command line to assign a specific
picture to a specific output and the user must learn the extremely
poorly documented configuration language of xorg.conf

[Bug 904505] Re: Flash doesn't work in epiphany-browser

2012-06-10 Thread frederik.nnaji
Jeremy: so is this definitely a wontfix then?
I think that the real problem is with GTK3.
The DECISION not to be flash-compatible is certainly more of a political
nature, and i can't say i'm totally opposed to it.

still, it should be noted, incompatibility with flash is a major selling
point missed, and bug #1 will have this additional stumbling stone to
overcome on it's long path to being fixed.

[Bug 966885] [NEW] quit should terminate process

2012-03-28 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

The quit option from the the quicklists doesn't terminate rhythmbox.
when rhythmbox is open, playing music, selecting Quit from the File menu
terminates the process and hereby stops the playback, too.

Quit should always mean quit = terminate the process and remove it from memory.
Close is something else, and it is ok if Close does what Window Close does,
wherever Close is afforded.

[Bug 901169] [NEW] fullscreen crashes application

2011-12-07 Thread frederik.nnaji

when i send epiphany-browser into fullscreen via F11 it usually crashes.
e.g. i have one window open with a monitoring client running in its

[Bug 900866] [NEW] Epiphany doesn't appear in window management

2011-12-06 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Epiphany's windows do not appear in ALT+TAB overview.
When Keep in launcher is selected, the Epiphany item in the launcher does not
connect to any running instance of the applications:
It doesn't indicate that Epiphany is running and it doesn't switch to an
Epiphany window, there is no exposé of open windows, tabs, pages or any preview

The right-click menu doesn't offer any options for Epiphany, it only shows

[Bug 799382] [NEW] SendReceive should be seperate processes

2011-06-19 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

in Evolution Mail, SendReceive is one combined process, which is
confusing and makes sending email messages extremely slow.

Example:
jeremy composed a new email message to recepi...@domain.tld and presses send.
Evolution Mail stores the message in Outbox, instead of sending it.
Jeremy is surprised to see an unsent message in his outbox, so he hits the only
button in the main Evolution Mail UI that contains the word send, which
happens to be the SendReceive button in the main toolbar.
Now, upon invoking this process, evolution starts querying information in all
folders and subfolders it is configured to search via IMAP, instead of simply
sending the message. Jeremy is confused and hits cancel all, after he notices
that the unsent message in OUTBOX is nolonger there.

This situation is a classic in Evolution 2.32.2 on Ubuntu (Unity) 11.04

$ apt-cache policy evolution
evolution:
  Installed: 2.32.2-0ubuntu7
  Candidate: 2.32.2-0ubuntu7
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.2-0ubuntu7 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Instead, Send and Receive should be seperate processes.
Receive should be automatic, if the user configures it to be so upon initial
setup (firstrun wizard), otherwise there should be a button like check mail
or refresh.

Send should be restricted to the individual message. Bulk sending is
impractical, since we already have more obvious methods for this such as
CC or BCC.

For a while i saw a progress bar in Evolution within the Compose
Message window upon pressing send, that was reasonable and made a lot
of sense.

[Bug 756930] Re: Previous Conversations window gets ever larger with Clean, Simple and Blue chat themes

2011-05-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think we need to fix the higher level problem here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/694533

the window would be to the point and concise, if it actually showed
only recent conversations with the contact it was opened for.

a general recency sorted overview for all contacts would also be
desireable, but it should be sorted according to recency or frequency of
contact, and not at all in the impractical manner in which it is now
being displayed.

[Bug 770331] [NEW] drag-switch doesn't support dragging

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

in the Accounts Manager for Empathy, dragging the [ON|OFF] toggle for
the respective service is not possible, rather clicking is required to
change that state.

These switches should support mouse dragging, as their visual properties
resemble physical objects, which would be moved the same way, and they
look less like discrete buttons that would require discrete clicking.

looks quite like it, thanks for digging ;)

If not, Facebook should be set to

yeah, away/idle is quite annoying, when it doesn't work. people see you
online and message you, expecting you to respond, since you're neither
busy nor away.
Some will always think you're ignoring them or being indifferent, when you
don't respond.

Interpreting Away as Offline on the other hand is a little harsh and
doesn't solve the problem at all.

I went into the kitchen to do some painting, then i returned to my computer.

This shouldn't happen.
Busy a.k.a. Do Not Disturb is a mode explicitly set by the User.

[Bug 693903] Re: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE

2011-01-20 Thread frederik.nnaji
i think there are many examples of how an interface can be designed to be
consistent with its DE.
Evolution stands out, in that its frontend obviously has no aim to be
consistent with the remaining DE, and i'm not talking about any persons
responsible for that, it is just the way the whole project appears to be in its
nature, from my point of view that is.

I have decided to invest my time into developing modern concepts,
instead of fixing this old imo brokon one.

If you have any questions or you believe i can still help, since there
are devs who wouldn't mind some design ideas, i'm available, but i won't
lead an initiative into nowhere.

hi Eric,
i see your point, it is a question of individual preference, and so there is a
workaround already in the preferences. The workaround otoh will stop your
incoming chat messages from being shown in the messaging menu :P

TBH it is not quite easy to discover, because this feature:
* is hidden in a sub-tab (the wrong one) of the preferences window
* is therefore hidden behind a semantically different title
* is activated by deactivating an other feature, i.e. doesn't have its own
switch

i marked this bug a duplicate of #652568

Re: [Bug 256478] Re: Support contact grouping (metacontacts)

2011-01-01 Thread frederik.nnaji
file a seperate bug.

2011/1/1 Martin Schröder 256...@bugs.launchpad.net

Now grouping of contacts works, that's right.
But if a contact chooses to switch the protocol (which many of my friends
with multiprotocol clients do randomly), another chat window opens.
The behavior I expect is like in pidgin: merged contacts share a single
 chat window.

That's why i marked it related to unity..

The desktop solution needs a way of honoring the user's preferences.
Until now we have been using GNOME in Ubuntu, and GNOME had Preferred

I'm not sure Preferred Applications is any longer part of the new Ubuntu

[Bug 694537] [NEW] no throbber when Hide Toolbars is active

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Epiphany has the wonderful option of hiding its toolbars all in one click.
Now, when the toolbars are hidden, it is quite easy to show them again
temporarily, by doing a simple CTRL+L.

Unfortunately, the indicators for page loading activity i.e. a throbber
and the progress bar inside the location bar are invisible in this mode,
so the only indication of site loading progress in this moment is the
text in the status bar.

If the status bar is disabled also, there is no way of knowing whether a
click was successful and the browser is actually loading the desired
content.

When 1 tabs are open, there is a tiny throbber on tabs that are
loading content. This of course is also not available in single document
view.

[Bug 694580] [NEW] thread view duplicates initiating mail

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution makes it very hard to read email threads in a chronological
manner.

threads are currently presented in the following way:
initial message
- response [last]
- response [last but one]
- response [last -2]
- response [last -3]
- response [last -4]
 [...]
- response [first]
- initial message

first of all, this duplicates the initial message in thread view -
quite confusing.

The most frequently used ways of sorting email views are unread on top and
last on top, in both cases the most recent messages are on top.
In that respect, Thread View = TRUE should result in just the same: most recent
messages on top.
This is consistent and presents the user with a continuous timeline of messages.

The Subject of a thread should remain the original title without Re.

[Bug 694597] [NEW] can't remove On This Computer

2010-12-26 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

when first setting up Evolution Mail (Messaging Menu - Setup Mail), a user
creates a local entry with a custom name.
There is a checkbox [User] can tick for make this my default account.

when account setup is complete, and the mails start synchronizing, there
is an unexpected Account with all its folders which appears in the
folder list on the left: On This Computer

Before i ask about the purpose of On This Computer in Evolution, i'd rather
suggest its removal.
..unless of course we want to revert to using a local mail server as Desktop
notification system ;)

Looking at my Account Tree on the left, i have a complexity that exceeds
my comprehension:

1) On This Computer
- Inbox
- Drafts
- Junk
- Outbox
- Sent
- Templates
- Trash

2) MyGmail
- Inbox
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder called [GMAIL]
   - All Mail
   - Drafts
   - Important
   - Sent Mail
   - Spam
   - Starred

- Junk
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder
- Trash
- an IMAP folder
- an IMAP folder

3) Search Folders
- Unmatched

needless to say, today is the first day i'm actually going through this
entire tree without angering myself too much to ever reach the bottom.

There should be a way to put folders like Junk, Drafts, Outbox,
Sent and Trash on top just below the Inbox folder in my MyGmail,
instead of hosting them under On This Computer.

They also shouldn't be sorted alphabetically, but in sequence of most
frequent access. If this is an unknown, then one could employ a
technology to track the frequency of usage periodically, say once a
week, and re-order the folders accordingly, if the statistical value
difference exceeds a certain threshold.

[Bug 693903] [NEW] ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE

the icon for Cancel current operation promotes itself stronly through

another reason for this problem is that the icon is always red. it is
always sensitive, even when there is no current mail operation to
cancel.

this is something to be discussed in design, i guess..

i'd suggest to put some effort into WM-based solutions. No, this is not
a feature request, no, toolkits, X or the respective single applications
can not solve the problem by themselves, since its scale exceeds their

AFAIK this has neither anything to do with jabber, nor with google talk.
empathy offers more consistency, since it is being developed upstream,

Re: [Bug 510865] Re: conversation window doesnt focus the actual messages after manual scrolling

2010-04-23 Thread frederik.nnaji
lucid fixes this.
i wouldn't know about backports for it though, since my machines are
now all on lucid beta..

i would recommend adding a pause button though:
when i scroll back to read an earlier part of the conversation,
incoming messages always make the window focus jump away from what i'm
trying to read, back to the newest messages.
to prevent that from happening, one could use the pause button to
inhibit refreshing the conversation window in the foreground, while
continues buffering the new incoming messages invisibly, until i
scroll back to the newest messages by hand, or alternatively hit
play again.
identi.ca has such a button, that's where i noticed it first.

[Bug 562990] [NEW] cancelling image creation leaves filesystem dirty

2010-04-14 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

i'm on lucid beta 2 with a Netbook

Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

i expected to cancel an image creation process, after changing my mind about it.
what happened instead, was that i cancelled only the brasero operation, the
image creation on the filesystem side was only discontinued: even after closing
brasero, the file, unfinished, still exists as corrupt .iso on the harddrive
right where i told brasero to put the image.

i would expect the application to not only cancel the creation process,
but also to delete the associated file trunk.

[Bug 562276] [NEW] Nautilus should support full screen

2010-04-13 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

i'm testing Ubuntu Lucid on a Netbook
using latest build from the regular lucid beta repos Nautilus 2.30.0
i expected Nautilus to go into full screen on my 10 display, after pressing F11
against my expectation, Nautilus did not go into full screen.

this is inconsistent with the other Gnome applications and inconsistent
with Gnome's Usability Principles in general.

lack of full screen functionality also is a serious usability issue on
smaller screens and in context with an activities based window
management configuration

[Bug 559419] [NEW] Sound Recorder defaults to overwriting existing file query upon clicking a menu item

2010-04-09 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Thanks for building this simple yet powerful software!
in order to improve the impact of how strong it's internals were made, it would
help enormously if pressing save in the icon bar menu wouldn't default to a
dialog always..

i would like to overwrite a file when i open it, upon simple save. the
first overwriting should need confirmation, the second overwriting
should just take place, if warned before. then the social desktop
notification daemon should receive a message from Sound Recorder saying
a voice-memo has been updated.

upon CTRL+SHIFT+S can safely default to GtkFileChooserDialog without
looking awkward..

I'm testing Lucid Beta on a Netbook.

instead, after recording the memo, i was asked to overwrite an other one upon

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: empathy

in a social desktop environment in gnome, empathy should integrate
 smoothly.
yet i can not dock the contact list window to the desktop, there is no such
functionality besides close, minimize, maximize and workspace settings.

the right desktop edge serves as the standard area for the contact list
already, yet embedding the list into the desktop or docking it to the corner
of my current workspace are not available options..

[Bug 552231] [NEW] terminal defaults to Bourne Shell-like profile

2010-03-30 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

in a gnome-terminal in 2010, the default shell configuration profile should
include scrolling at least intuitively.
the feature is available from the profile-preferences dialog in the
gnome-terminal menu, but is disabled by default.

folks, i know to some of you this might be a religious or philosophical
topic, bourne shell has been a home, a living place to many of you guys
who've been around linux in it's early days, all respect goes out to you
people who held up the flag for linux and free software ever since.

let's make the environment that once was the main user interface to the linux
kernel more intuitive, following the ideas of usability and intelligent human
interface design, by making the shell infinitely scrollable by default.
we are in an age of computing, in which only exceptional machines are unable to
memorise a few hundred lines of code, due to small Random Access Memory
capacity..
even if so, they will obviously not be able to run Lucid or even Karmic, not to
speak of X itself then.

i hope not to annoy anyone with this bug report / opinion

i found no technical arguments for my bug report and solution, so i
chose historical ones.

[Bug 550830] [NEW] indicator applet opens multiple windows for contacts and mail

2010-03-29 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution's integration into the indicator applet is a welcome step, as
everyone i ask agrees.
problem is: when i choose mail from the indicator applet drop-down menu, it
opens the overall window of evolution, regardless whether there is already an
open evolution window for e.g. contacts or tasks.

more confusing is the fact that, considering contacts and chat share
the same drop-down menu column, selecting contacts does not reveal the
chat contacts. this is inconsistent with what that menu entry is
currently indicating to the intuitively navigating user..

solution could be, adding support for importing contacts from the chat app.
pidgin-contacts are already suported
system wide contact sharing for authorized applications would be the next step
as proposed by the people-project, if the name contact list above empathy's
contact list should not confuse the user.

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: empathy

after having scrolled up manually, the conversation window in a chat fails
to get back to ordinary focus, in which it would then follow the actual
 conversations messages with the scrolling..
instead, the scrollbar keeps the conversation window focus on the messages
manually viewed, and the focus rests there, regardless of any new messages
 being sent or coming in..

 very annoying bug!!

[Bug 543939] [NEW] crossfade engine fail: fade-in doesn't work

2010-03-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

after enabling the crossface engine in rhythmbox with about 1.5 seconds fade
duration, fade-in does not work.
songs do fade out softly, but they don't fade in, instead they skip the fade-in
part.

i would really enjoy seeing a play/pause icon in the status-icon
dropdown menu instead of only Play

[Bug 543953] [NEW] no support for fullscreen

2010-03-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

evolution in its current version in lucid does not support fullscreen
functionality.
there is nowhere i can set the evolution window to fullscreen.
this is very disappointing on a 10 display, yet easy to fix.

in fullscreen, one could also enable a feature to dock a contact list
empathy style, to enable either starting an IM or eMail conversation
with the contacts registered there..

I think what OP is saying is something along the lines of the following use
 case:
 1) Joe wants to see a message that was previously said in convo. Joe
 scrolls up to view message
 2) After reading message, Joe scrolls back down
 3) Joe expects, from then on, empathy will continue operation as if no
scrolling took place. i.e. when a new message is received it will
 automatically scroll down.

the problem is currently (on my empathy, have not tried trunk), is that
at 3, the window no longer scrolls with new im's.

thank you abhishek!
due to configuration of my mailbox filters i failed to catch up with a few
messages here..
sorry Omer, i was quasi away for a while.

the above description is precise and describes my experience in ubuntu
karmic.

i am now testing the current lucid packages and am not experiencing issiues
of the sort.
yet the timestamp issue in the ubuntu theme remains..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/543537

anyhow, as far as i can see there is no such problem in empathy on lucids
social desktop.

[Bug 543537] Re: misleading timestamps in ubuntu theme

2010-03-22 Thread frederik.nnaji
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: empathy

the ubuntu theme shows misleading timestamps for messages in conversations
from previous days.
a conversation in empathy with the ubuntu theme enabled would look like this:

- helle darling, please pick up the kids today - 15:42
+ darling, please pick up the kids today - 15:42
okay luv, no problem - 15:29

in this example, the date of the first message can not be determined.
one may falsely conclude, it was sent on the same day

better would be, to determine wheter a message was sent on the same day, or
on a different day.
if the date differs, that information should be included in the message's
timestamp.
if the date of the message is TODAY, then the timestamp can omit that
information safely.

[Bug 543438] [NEW] contact list doesn't dock to social gnome desktop

2010-03-21 Thread frederik.nnaji
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

in a social desktop environment in gnome, empathy should integrate smoothly.
yet i can not dock the contact list window to the desktop, there is no such
functionality besides close, minimize, maximize and workspace settings.

the right desktop edge serves as the standard area for the contact list
already, yet embedding the list into the desktop or docking it to the
corner of my current workspace are not available options..
