Bug description:
When I use the Adwaita theme, some widgets end up being drawn with a
black background after particular interactions. Here are two examples:

If I open gedit, by default I see a new black document. The notebook
widget is visible, and rendered correctly. As soon as I open another
document (no matter if I close the existing one first), the entire
widget starts being drawn with a black background.

If I open System Settings, then click the (Ubuntu) Online Accounts
panel, the box with the Remove account button has a solid black
background. If, instead, I open Online Accounts directly from its
launcher (run gnome-control-center credentials), everything is
rendered correctly: there are no solid black backgrounds until I click
All Settings and select the Online Accounts panel again.

This has been happening consistently on two very different machines,
both updated to Quantal from 12.04 using the upgrade tool.

While I agree (and was in the plans) this change requires a lot of work and is
not in plans... if somebody wants to pick it up, this is what he needs to do::
1) set RGBA colormap for the Gtk menus used in unity.
2) patch compiz to draw shadows with different radius per each side.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 932181] Re: Unity Greeter - Update indicator menus so that they match the Unity Greeter style

2012-10-22 Thread Andrea Cimitan
The menu is rendered by the indicator library, that means we can't style
from the greeter. We have to either export something and style in html
from the greeter, or patch the indicator library to provide a style for
the greeter (ugly). The latter will still not work without compositing,
because the menu is a toplevel gtkwindow, thus requires RGBA colormap
through the compositor.

Bug description:
  hi,

after reviewing the current beta release of oneiric, I found that
there are mostly great design improvements. Just the nautilus theme
looks quite weired. the sidebar looks like a cancer IN MY OPINION.
that is given because the sidebar comes with a different color schema
  in the Ambience theme.

The most important part is that the sidebar does feel like a part of
nautilus and not like a unthemed plugin

  My suggestions:
  1) Toolbar, Sidebar and Pane with the same color and/or gradiant
  2) ...or... The upper part of the sidebar could have the same color/gradiant
as the toolbar and so acting as it would be part of the toolbar (although
it's not)..

for suggestion one, I attached a possible tweak that I gimped. The
upper part of the sidebar continues the gradiant of the toolbar and
the rest of the sidebar continues uni-colored.

  ---

  Desired solution:

Update Nautilus theme to follow the attached tweak suggestion image
  (suggestion 1 above)

the awesome bar menu (bar with addresses) will become dark, as it was
before, which looked a bit out of place and not nice at all :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1052936] Re: Progress bar in Progress section has a hole in it

2012-09-27 Thread Andrea Cimitan
I think it's not a bug in light-themes.

I think the ubuntu software center is using a background-color, overriding gtk
theme ones, thus it colors the progressbar.
With Adwaita the problem is not noticeable because Adwaita is using a
background-image, which in Gtk+ rendering has higher priority over background
color.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1043379] Re: Visual design request: Missing icons for sync status

2012-09-24 Thread Andrea Cimitan
ubuntu-mono-light and ubuntu-mono-dark themes already include some
icons for the following status: idle, error and syncing. The icons names
are ubuntuone-client-idle, ubuntuone-client-error and ubuntuone-error-
sync.

However, the paused status is actually missing. So, I made a new icon (a pause
symbol inside a small cloud) for both light and dark mono themes in 16px, 22px
and 24px.
You will find attached an archive containing all the corresponding SVGs.

And we use overlay scrollbars, which are invoked when the mouse is
  close to the edge.

Interactions between the overlay scrollbar and the magic window border
are subtle and can either enhance or degrade the experience
  substantially.

The overlay scrollbar should be a little harder to invoke near the
bottom right corner, because that is a particularly important spot for
resizing windows, a common operation. In general, perhaps it should
not be possible to invoke the overlay scrollbar thumb when the mouse
is within 20px of the bottom right corner of the window.

  3. Make sure you have the launcher set to appear on all monitors
  4. Disable sticky-edges
  5. Move your mouse from the right-most screen to the screen to the left
 - Verify that there is some pressure needed to move from one screen to
another, caused by the fact that the Launcher auto-hide is enabled

  [Regression Potential]
Trivial change, no other regression potential.

  Original description:

Currently if the sticky edges are disabled, they are *all* disabled.
However what should happen is that if 'sticky edges' is disabled AND
the launcher is set to auto-hide, the sticky edges should remain
active on a single edge (where the launcher is) from a single
direction (the direction the pointer has to travel to reveal the
  Launcher)

  What currently happens:

When the Launcher is set to autohide and 'Sticky edges' are turned
off, 'Launcher Edge Stop Overcome Pressure' seems to be broken when
revealing the Launcher. It is switched off on all edges

  What should happen:

When the Launcher is set to autohide and 'Sticky edges' are turned
off, the 'Launcher Edge Stop Overcome Pressure' should continue to be
active *only* as part of the launcher reveal action. e.g. if the user
moves the pointer from the right to left to reveal the Launcher it
should be triggered and the monitor edge, but if the user moves the
pointer from left to right (or down to up, or up to down) across a
monitor border it should not be triggered.

Reduce the spread delay for all items other than the initial item the
select lands on after alt-tab opens. After the user moves the select
off it's opening position, spread delay should be shortened. This
change is because a longer spread delay is only required for the
initial item to allow the user time to scan the items in alt-tab
without being disrupted. The spread delay on all other item can be
shorter, which should give a more responsive feel.

  --
  Note from User Testing:

In user testing, participants did not find the spread because they
moved between applications too quickly. When I pointed out the spread
to them, they commented that the delay was too long. Power users said
that it would be faster for them to find what they were looking for
  without the spread.

Note: Re-opening bug because user testing has shown us that the spread
delay needs to be shortened even further.

work upstream or patch in firefox (ubuntu)

The Firefox 4 browser in 11.04 doesn't use Unitys scrollbars (the light ones
with the up/down button showing as soon as you move the mouse pointer over it).
  Instead, it uses standard scrollbars.

I believe this is an inconsistency in the UI, as other programs (e.g.

Input boxes color is gray. There are two good reasons for this to be black.
  1. We should never reduce the contrast of text by default, because it kills
accessibility. A lot of bad monitors are out there which are hard to read
anyway.

  2. Openoffice uses Input boxes text color by default for document default
text color. If this is gray, all documents will have gray text and gray
formulas. While 50/256 gray is somewhat ok on screen, it produces nasty results
on print (causing rasterised output, which makes all curves jiggly). This is A
Bad Thing™, and definitely worse for the default theme.
The worst of this is that the gray default color is saved into document and
changing the theme color affects only newly created ones. One could change the
color of Default text style back to black, but if you have formulas, then
these remain gray even after that. AFAIK only workaround for formulas is adding
color black {} to all formulas.

While we could argue that openoffice shouldn't use input box text color,
but for the first argument I think the theme should be adjusted.

In the attached screenshot, gnome-terminal has three tabs open, and

  Problem occurs with: Ambiance, Ubuntu 10.04; Ambiance, Ubuntu Maverick;

Does not occur with: Clearlooks, Ubuntu 10.04; Ambiance-maverick-beta, Ubuntu

When using 'Main menu' instead of 'Menu Bar', and when the menu group
is too long to fit on the screen, I expect the scrolling functionality
to work properly when using the mouse. Unfortunately, when my cursor
leaves the scrolling button, the menu 'jumps' to where it started

  1. Reduce your screen resolution to ensure that scrolling will kick in. I
have an Asus N10J netbook, and the resolution is 1024x600
  2. Make sure you are using the 'Ambiance' theme (yes, it is important)
  3. Right-click on any panel, and add applet named 'Main Menu'
  4. Click on the newly created 'Main Menu' and make your way to System -
Preference. There should be enough menu items there to get the scroller
buttons to appear
  5. Using the mouse, move your cursor on top of the scrolling-down button
  6. After you are at the bottom of the menu, try to select the last menu item
and see what happens: It will jump to the beginning of the list.

  Observation that I've made

  - This bug is not present in 'Menu Bar'
  - It is somehow related to the theme. Change the theme to Clearlooks, and
the scrolling problem in 'Main Menu' is gone

As stated by Kenneth Wimer in Bug #534802, there is no need for a
visual separation between the title bar and the menu bar, as we can
now drag the windows from anywhere in these 2 bars (which now look
  like a single bar).

But when you double click on the title bar, it (un-)maximizes it. If
you double click on the menu bar... Nothing happen!

It is very confusing for users who now expect both thoses bars to
behave as one. In fact, many users will not see the difference between
the 2 bars, and will not understand why sometimes it doesn't work! It
  is not consistent at all.

I believe this is a big issue (and while users are not yet used to the
left position of the buttons, they might use this method to maximize
  their windows even more often).

For example, open a Nautilus window and select an icon. Switch focus
to the desktop by clicking on it. The window is not active but the
icon in it retains the selected items color. It appears as though
it is still selected and that it can be modified by keyboard
shortcuts. By clicking on an icon on the desktop it changes color to
be selected an now it appears that two items are selected.

Several times I've deleted things by accident due to this, especially
when I was new to GNOME. I would have several windows open with items
selected. I would see the item I want selected and hit the delete key
to remove it, only to realize that I had some other window focused
where I had deleted something else.

In Windows selected items in unfocused windows turn gray. I think it
also adds another visual clue as to what window is focused besides
  just the title bar.

Firefox and Thunderbird deliver the behavior I expect (probably
because they are only faux GTK apps). Select some text in Firefox and
then focus to another window and you will see that the selected text
turns gray, indicating it is not active. Try that in gedit or evince
and the text will remain blue.

lighter, but other times I do not see any change at all, so I am not
sure if I imagined it. This is opposed to being surrounded by orange
and the text becoming white as expected by the default theme.

Try to highlight something in the Ubuntu Software Centre, then right-
click, select Copy and then pasting elsewhere shows that something
  was highlighted.

This made copying (for example a URL) very difficult.

I think this is different from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/929974
as that seems to be about an earlier version not having copying or
highlighting functionality at all.

In Light theme menus, the only difference in appearance between a
keyboard combo and the rest of a menu item is that the keyboard combo
  is less saturated.

It's possible that a keyboard combo could be more obvious, more
understandable, and less distracting, if it is presented as something
  that looks more like keys.

For example, the Ctrl++ keyboard combo for zooming in on something
could be presented as [Ctrl‬] [+].

This is especially true for selected items, and maybe it's for the music decade

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 971459] [NEW] Regression - Menubar appears/disappears when launching an app

2012-04-02 Thread Andrea Cimitan
Public bug reported:

gtk+3.0 (3.3.18-0ubuntu3) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/043_ubuntu_menu_proxy.patch:
- Add back 'ubuntu-local' property for GtkMenuBar to allow apps to
opt-out of the global bar on a per-menubar basis. (Used for glade,
  freeciv, and maybe others)

 -- Michael Terry mte...@ubuntu.com Fri, 16 Mar 2012 11:55:09 -0400

This revision introduces a regression cause the ubuntu-local signal
triggers the menubar in/out.

It affects all apps, but most of them are fast enough not to notice it.
I can see it all of the times on gnome terminal and eog. On slower
machines the effect is more noticeable.

Since this updated was proposed to fix glade, I simply will go back to
the previous revision we have in 3.3.18ubuntu2 and blacklist the menubar
in appmenu-gtk.

The change will cause glade to look slightly less integrated, but glade
is an advanced tool used by a minority of people, while the current
regression affects all our users and make the experience look cheap
unfortunately.

I will chat with mike trying to find a different solution, otherwise we
will need to do what I explained before, with the revert.

Currently the font_name field in the gtkrc file is the only way to
change fonts and it only allows an absolute change. If a user wants to
use a smaller font for certain widgets or if an application tries to
provide a gtkrc file that results in a more compact dialog layout, it
would be a lot nicer if the font could be specified relative to the
desktop-wide configured font. This missing feature leads for example
  to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325324.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 943682] Re: gtk3 draws black backgrounds with unico themes

2012-03-16 Thread Andrea Cimitan
Issue is not in unico, neither Gtk+, but in the themes.

With updated Gtk+ 3.x, widgets must specify or inherit background
colors, otherwise theming engines (unico or gtk default theming engine)
won't render the background (cause the default background color is NULL,
indeed).

All themes, like lubuntu or light-themes, must add a line like:

background-color: @bg_color;

...n the widgets which are affected by this black background, because this
black background means background-color is currently unset.
Set it to a color and unico or gtk+ will render with the background-color,
black gone.

Cheers

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 924310] [NEW] Draw a grid on the wallpaper.

2012-01-31 Thread Andrea Cimitan
Public bug reported:

libgnome-desktop-3-2 should be patched to draw optionally a grid on the top of
the wallpaper.
Attached an initial patch that applies the effect using cairo.

The patch is not complete, requires few more tunings:

1) Option (ideally, using gsettings), which enables/disables the pixel grid.
2) The filename used in local cache should be different when it has grid
enabled or not.
3) The grid texture is currently stored at
/usr/share/backgrounds/desktop_grid.png, an updated patch should use the global
install dir plus a right prefix (or wallpaper_grid.png as image name too).

** Affects: gnome-desktop3 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Wishlist
 Status: New
