Re: [DISCUSS] Adopting Github Discusssions Users Forum

2023-11-28 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Looks pretty good, well organized, and visible, rather email lists! I hope we
start seeing more and more there.

There might be some users not having a github account, which might not benefit
and abstain one day if we decide to fully migrate, but let’s think about that
then!

Great work and nice idea!

Subject: [DISCUSS] Adopting Github Discusssions Users Forum
All,

It's been a while since I had last proposed adopting and trying the Github
Discussions feature for our users community. Since then, the ASF infra seems to
have enabled integration and allowing Discussions integrated with mailing
lists: https://github.com/search?q=.asf.yaml+discussions=code

Following discussions with both technical and non-technical users from the CCC,
I believe we should try this out and use it for users to discuss their ideas,
questions, and problems, all that traditionally has happened on the users@ ML;
while been integrating such discussions on the users@ ML. The Discussions
platform could be used by developers too to get feedback from users.

That said, we MUST continue to use our mailing lists for any project governance
related matters such as releases related discussions, releases voting, and any
form of consensus and decision making.

I've proposed a PR for this here where the discussions feature is tied to
users@ ML:
https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/8274/files

Thoughts and feedback?

Regards.

Dear All,

I would like to propose and put myself forward as the release manager for
4.19.0 release. In the past, I've RM'd 4.17.1.0 release and co-RM'd a couple of
releases before that. I would like to take experiences from those to work on a
successful release.

I propose we start early, sometime in Q3 2023, with the planning, triaging,
bug-fixing, etc to get back on the traditional two-release per year cycle. With
this we can aim to cut the RC sometime in October. I will propose a detailed
timeline soon.

I hope to have your support. Please let me know if you have any
thoughts/comments.

Regards,
Abhishek

CCC Get together event: Monday 14th Nov, after the talks

2022-11-07 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi everyone attending Cloudstack collab conference!

I’m very excited for the conference coming to my town, so as good citizens of
this splendid community, decided to organize a get together event at a local
pub. We’re planning to go there right after the talks via Sub-way train (line
M4). You’ll need to catch it in direction ‘Obelya’ for 6 stops and get out on
station ‘Vasil Levski Stadium’, then a short 3 min walk to the pub.
Here’s the exact place on maps: https://goo.gl/maps/X44W9TAfLNa63rHMA

Since this is a non-sponsored event, please help me out to figure out the exact
count of people that are willing to join us after the sessions. Please reply
privately to me so I can keep track of participants with the venue.

Speaking of the venue, it’s a great pub with its own home brewed sorts of beer
and great vibes, I’m sure you’ll like it!

Thanks,
Bobby.

Re: Looking for beginner friendly issues

2022-03-31 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi Chayan,

Have you heard of GSoC2022, it’s a paid internship sponsored by Google aiming
to connect open source communities and people like you looking to contribute.

This year we have a list of ideas for contributors, please have a look and
submit a proposal:
https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/labels/gsoc2022

Also you might want to register with GSoC as contributor:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2022

Please be advised that the submission deadline for proposals is April 19th, so
you’ll need to be quick.

Please let me know if any questions.

Re: GSoC22

Hi guys, just ping you on this one. Please add you ideas in GitHub and label
them with ‘gsoc2022’.

From: Boris Stoyanov

To: dev@cloudstack.apache.org ,
us...@cloudstack.apache.org
Subject: GSoC22
Hi everyone,

GSoC 22 has been announced and the timeline is now available. Last year we had
great success with our students having them all completed their assignments and
I hope this year comes with even better results. From Feb 7th organizations can
start submitting their applications for the program and I think now it’s good
time to start preparing. If nobody objects, I’d like to step up and coordinate
our GSoC involvement this year. I’ll help with info and support for students
and mentors if they need to, also will be responsible to report back to you
results and make sure we take the most of the program.

Please checkout the timeline here:
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline

Also have a look at the general information at:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com

To submit your idea please create a GitHub issue at the official ACS project
with label “gsoc22”, we’ll later review and work with the ASF guys to make this
list available for applications. You will also need to register as a mentor. To
become a mentor you don’t need to be committer or PMC, you need to have an idea
and the will to support and guide a student developing it. Registering is also
easy, please send an email to private@ and ask to be recognized as such, I
can’t think of a reason for someone to be dropped by this, it’s more or less
anti-flooding mech. I believe individuals that have mentored already does not
need to apply again, will get back to you if it turns otherwise.

The idea:

  * Aim at low hanging fruits – we have a limited time for completing this
project and most of the time it will be somebody just starting his career so
think of something achievable
  * Spend some time defining it good and appealing, after all it needs to
catch an eye of an applicant

The tech:

  * Avoid domain specific tech – expecting a student to be aware of specific
technology or product integration in Cloudstack is not really realistic, or
pick something that can be easily understand fast
  * Stick to common tech – think of a task related to particular framework we
use, or enchasing a common functionality this way it will sound more familiar
to people and it will pick more eyes, eventually candidates

Changes this year:

https://opensource.googleblog.com/2021/11/expanding-google-summer-of-code-in-2022.html

TL;DR:

There’s three new changes this year, some of which can be taken into
consideration:

  1. Eligibility: the only requirement now is to be above 18, you don’t need
to prove you’re student now. This will open up the door for more candidates
  2. Projects come with different sizes – we can now submit large and mid size
projects, please indicate this in the github item

 *   Mid - ~175hrs until August
 *   Large - ~350hrs until November

  1. Increased Flexibility – projects can be now 12 or 22 weeks, despite
having strict deadline like last year (end of August), looks like it can be
extended to 22week now.

Please directly add your project idea, and of course if you have questions I’ll
be available to help.

Thanks,

Bobby.

Try understanding the particular project expectations before applying, come
back to the mentor with some relative questions and be proactive, these are
just some points to lead you to a top-notch proposal.

@Rohit Yadav we might have a UI blocker, I'm
waiting for Mike to report the issue - it seems (per his separate email to this
ML) that the Traffic Labels are not persisted after the Zone deployment (UI
doesn't show traffic labels) - I do recall an issue in 4.15.0 where similar was
happening and one could not update the Traffic label in new UI (old UI had to
be used)

@Corey, Mike please report here with the problem -
thx.

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts on Management Server.

2021-06-09 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Having to install a separate plugin is not really sustainable. We’re planning
to add small labels next to the major links so that shows which key is the
shortcut so no memorizing will be needed(like vimium does but not dynamically,
shortcuts will have the same keys all the time)

I also like and use vimium but with the new UI it’s simply not working.
Pressing f and then the key combination for the ‘Compute’ for example does not
get you to the page, that’s why we can’t rely on additional browser plugins for
this.

Thanks,
Bobby.

I looked at the GSOC idea. I have feedback on this

1. Need to memorize the shortcut which is not so good
2. only a limited set of shortcuts as of now.. if it grows then more
memorization

If we use vimium or similar plugin

cons

need to spend time installing in browsers

pros

very less memorization
more shortcuts
no need for source code change if more tabs/panes or whatever is added to
ui future. (just press F and you are good to go)

GSoC2021 mentor request for Boris Stoyanov

2021-04-01 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Please acknowledge my request to become a mentor for Google Summer of

Code 2021 projects for Apache CloudStack.

I would like to receive the mentor invite to bss.stoya...@gmail.com

Here’s the idea I’ve proposed, which already has one student interested.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I’ve created a separate ticket in JIRA with title prefix GSoC 2021 and labels:
‘gsoc2021’,’mentor’. This will allow it to be picked up automatically and added
to the page that Maxim created.

I encourage everyone who submitted idea to advertise it in the same manner so
it can stand out with other ideas on this huge page.

All
Just an update on where the project is with GSoC

We've had a number of suggestions on this mailing list and also some people
submitting ideas as Github issues:
https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Agsoc2021

Thank you everybody who has submitted a project and said you'd act as a mentor

Below, I've collated all of the proposed ideas (abbreviated project names)

Harikrishna "mapping existing configuration parameters to the APIs"
Suresh "Cloning a Virtual Machine (with all the data disks)"
Boris "improvements in the UI around user experience. navigate around just
using keyboards"
David "allowing the user to set multiple SSH keys"
Alireza "writing a Container Storage Interface (CSI) for Kubernetes"
Daan: suggested a number of projects but unfortunately isn't able to mentor
this year.
Rohit "onboard users with existing XenServer/VMware/* environments with VMs to
CloudStack/KVM."
Pearl "extending the behaviour of Persistent Networks in CloudStack."
Wei "Spice console"
Nicolas initially put forward "marvin test service" but has since contacted me
to say that he'd prefer to put forward on of Daans projects: "authentication
plugins for public authentication providers like google/microsoft/facebook/etc"

I think these all look like interesting projects

@ Alireza - as far as I can see from discussions on list, your initial idea
didn't seem to develop into a proposal. Do you still wish to pursue it ?

WHAT PROPOSERS NOW NEED TO DO==

We have two primary things to do to make these available as Apache GSoC
projects:

  1. We need to get them listed on COMDEV here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/GSoC+2021+Ideas+list#GSoC2021Ideaslist-CloudStack

This is the page that students will visit if they choose to browse Apache as a
partner (Thanks to Rohit for getting the initial CloudStack listing here)

Note: we will be competing with other projects for the students attention, so
need to ensure that the listings are "attractive"

My thinking is that the descriptions need to be more "student focussed" - i.e
they cannot assume any CloudStack knowledge and they should explain the type of
tech/skills involved
Could I therefore ask everybody to reply to this thread with a more structured
project description:

- project Title

-brief description including what problem this solves & what are its benefits
-technologies involved (i.e. Java, VueJS)
-who would this suit ? (i.e. this would suit somebody with a passion for UI
design)

I will then take those descriptions and add them to our listing on COMDEV

  1. Mentors need to read https://community.apache.org/gsoc.html and,
specifically, register with the mailing list
ment...@community.apache.org ASAP
They should then get an invite from the GSoC people. Being on this list allows
you to be officially recognised as a mentor but also to help deal with any
student enquiries about your projects

Giles

Re: Goggle Summer of Code 2021

2021-03-15 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi Giles and all,

I’d like to propose some improvements in the UI around user experience. I think
it’ll be great if users can navigate around just using keyboards, meaning go to
different pages, confirm dialogues and submit forms without the use of mouse.

Here’s a detailed description of the feature:
https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues/4798

As far as mentorship, I’m happy to take part on the ideas/requirements side of
the feature, but we’ll need a volunteer for the coding part.

Thanks,
Bobby.

Subject: Goggle Summer of Code 2021
Hi all

It would be great if the CloudStack project were able to get a few Google
Summer of Code [1] students this year to work on projects within our
community. We've had a number of previous GSoC students (examples at [2] ), who
have worked on innovative features/ projects within cloudstack and have then
gone on to become significant contributors to Cloudstack .

In order to be able to attract students to work on Cloudstack, we need 2 things:

  1. A number of candidate projects for students to work on. Students browse
all GSoC the candidate projects and choose one that interests them- effectively
every organisation is competing for the students interest. These projects
therefore need to be reasonably interesting looking projects to attract
potential students. The students spend approximately 9 weeks coding, so the
projects need to be appropriately scaled
  2. Somebody prepared to mentor the student throughout the duration of the
project (usually the person who suggests the project)

The student application period starts 29 March [3]
The ASF has registered itself as a mentor organisation with Google , allowing
individual Apache projects to list candidate projects for students to work on.
A wiki page [4] has been created at the ASF level to allow ASF projects to
list their ideas for students

I'm happy to coordinate this from a Cloudstack perspective.
If others are happy with this approach, then I ask for two things at this stage:

  1. Could people suggest appropriate projects. This could be a piece of
integration that you've always considered and not got around to or could be an
improvement that you've always wanted to do. If people can reply to this thread
with ANY ideas, it would be a good start (irrespective of whether you wish to
be a mentor or not)
  2. At the same time, could people say whether they'd be prepared to be a
student mentor or not

In shared effort with Vladimir Petrov, we've done upgrade testing from latest

4.11
4.13

Also did a basic lifecycle operations of:
VMs, Networks, Storage, Infra(pod, cluster, zone, hosts).

Re: [VOTE] Apache CloudStack 4.14.0.0 RC3

2020-05-19 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi guys,

I've done more testing around this and I can now confirm it has nothing to do
with cloudstack code.

I've tested it with rc3, reverted UEFI PR and 4.13.1 (which does not happen to
have the feature at all). Also I've used a matrix of VMware version of 6.0u2,
6.5u2 and 6.7u3.

The bug is reproducible with all the cloudstack versions, and only vmware
6.7u3, I was not able to reproduce this with 6.5/6.0. All of my results during
testing show it must be related to that specific version of VMware.

Therefore I'm reversing my '-1' and giving a +1 vote on the RC. I think it
needs to be included in release notes to refrain from that version for now
until further investigation is done.

Thanks,
Bobby.

As for recovery, we've managed to recover vCenter and Cloudstack after
reboots of the vCenter machine and the Cloudstack management service. There's
no exact points to recover for now, but restart seems to work.
By graceful failure I mean, cloudstack erroring out the deployment and VM

We're currently exploring options to fix this, one could be to disable the

Other is to look for more guarding code when installing a template, since
VMware doesn’t actually allow you install that particular template but
cloudstack does. We'll keep you posted.

What's involved in "failing gracefully"? Is this a small fix, or an
overhaul? Perhaps the new feature could be disabled for VMware, or
disabled altogether until a fix is made in a patch release.

Does it only affect new templates, or is there a risk that an existing
template out in vSphere could suddenly cause problems?

2020-05-18 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi guys,

A little further info on this, it appears when we use a corrupted template and
UEFI/Legacy mode when deploy a VM, it breaks the connection between cloudstack
and vCenter.

All hosts become unreachable and basically the cluster is not functional, have
not investigated a way to recover this but seems like a huge mess..
Please note that user is not able to register such template in vCenter
directly, but cloudstack allows using it.

Open to discuss if we'll fix this, since it's expected users to use working
templates, I think we should be failing gracefully and such action should not
be able to create downtime on such a large scale.

I believe the boot type feature is new one and it's not available in older
releases, so this issue should be limited to 4.14/current master.

Thanks,
Bobby.

Re: [VOTE] Apache CloudStack 4.13.1.0 RC3

2020-04-28 Thread Boris Stoyanov
[+1](binding)

I've done upgrade tests with the following environments and they all were
successful:
From
4.13 with VMware6.5 hosts - Passed
4.11 with KVM on CentOS7 hosts - Passed
4.9.3 with XenServer 7 hosts - Passed
To 4.13.1 RC3

Marvin tests also does not seem to show any current issue with 4.13.1.

I've done some manual verification also mainly around lifecycle operations
around: VMs, Networks, Volumes, Adding/Removing a zone etc.. all seems to be
looking good.

Thanks,
Bobby.

LS,
in the past we had set a set of rules in the community under which PR could
be merged. I want to reiterate them here as it seems we are kind of
slacking. Please chime in if there are any issues or omissions:

For a PR to be merged it has to adhere to the following conditions:
- In any case
-- A PR has to have had two approving reviews
-- A PR has to have no outstanding requests for changes. A request for
changes is regarded no longer outstanding if the requester stops responding
on the PR discussions.
-- A PR has to have a review with verification description. Depending on
the type of PR this can be a test description, an automated test included,
screenshots in case of UI changes. If it is a tetual change it must be
verified to not apply to logs or events.
- any commiter can merge a PR if it adheres to those conditions
-- unless a freeze has been called by a the branch it is to be merged on by
a community appointed release manager for that branch

hope this is short and complete enough at the same time. It has been agreed
upon in the past but I am too lazy to find the mail thread in the archives.
If anyone disagrees we'll have to go there. They seem reasonable and
self-evident to me. I am also not sure if these should be stated in bylaws
or on github, so comments in that respect are welcome as well. Let's first
again agree on them.

There's been a need for a new UI from quite a long time and I'm really excited
about it, looking forward to play with it.

All,

The feedback and response has been positive on the proposal to use Primate
as the modern UI for CloudStack [1] [2]. Thank you all.

I'm starting this vote (to):

  * Accept Primate codebase [3] as a project under Apache CloudStack
project
  * Create and host a new repository (cloudstack-primate) and follow
Github based development workflow (issues, pull requests etc) as we do with
CloudStack
  * Given this is a new project, to encourage cadence until its feature
completeness the merge criteria is proposed as:
 * Manual testing against each PR and/or with screenshots from the
author or testing contributor, integration with Travis is possible once we get
JS/UI tests
 * At least 1 LGTM from any of the active contributors, we'll move
this to 2 LGTMs when the codebase reaches feature parity wrt the existing/old
CloudStack UI
 *   Squash and merge PRs
  * Accept the proposed timeline [1][2] (subject to achievement of goals
wrt Primate technical release and GA)
 * the first technical preview targetted with the winter 2019 LTS
release (~Q1 2020) and release to serve a deprecation notice wrt the older UI
 * define a release approach before winter LTS
 * stop taking feature FRs for old/existing UI after winter 2019 LTS
release, work on upgrade path/documentation from old UI to Primate
 * the first Primate GA targetted wrt summer LTS 2020 (~H2 2019), but
still ship old UI with a final deprecation notice
 * old UI codebase removed from codebase in winter 2020 LTS release

The vote will be up for the next two weeks to give enough time for PMC and
the community to gather consensus and still have room for questions, feedback
and discussions. The results to be shared on/after 21th October 2019.

For sanity in tallying the vote, can PMC members please be sure to indicate

RHEL6 is 8 years old (and is still running kernel 2.6!) and isn't
scheduled to be fully EOL until 2024.

It is true that upgrading requires some effort (and risk) from
operators, but this is work they eventually have to do anyway, so it's
not a matter of /if/ they have to do it, but rather when.

It is also true that current CloudStack releases should continue to
work, it's also possible that someone might back port future fixes to
a RHEL6 compatible fork (you're more than welcome to).

I'd vote +1 to remove support for el6 packaging.

If you don’t have the Marvin tar file under the tools/marvin/dest then it
failed building it try building it manually with this:

mvn -P developer -pl :cloud-marvin

you could run it with a debugger in PyCharm for example and figure out if
there’s anything wrong with the code. Please note that these tests are
successful with KVM, VMware and Xen.

The logs you’ve shared are just results, there’s a failed_plus_exceptions file
in each test file log, where you could find more detailed info and stack trace.

Boris.

I’ve done upgrade testing from 4.9 on a VMWare based environment and it went
well, I think all the issues delivered with this RC are being verified and
confirmed. I’ve also executed some general lifecycle tests around main
components like (VMs, Networks, Volumes, Storages etc)

Thanks,

Assuming I may vote:

+1 from my side

Tested:
- building DEB packages for Ubuntu
- advanced and basic zone deployment (KVM, clean install 4.11.2)
- upgrade from 4.8.0.1 to 4.11.2
- a bunch of integration tests done from in-house suite of tests (system
and user tests) - all PASS, with exception that RAW templates are broken -
there is already a GitHub issue from 4.11:
https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/issues/2820
- online and offline storage migration from NFS/CEPH to SolidFire

Some issues I experienced (perhaps something local to me, but managed to
reproduce it many times):
Management/Agent on Ubuntu 14.04:
When upgrading existing 4.8 installation to 4.11.2, init.d scripts were not
created/overwritten nor I was asked if I want to replace or keep existing
versions (like it's done with i.e. agent.properties, db.properties, etc...)
so this seems like some packaging issue.
Clean install (or in my problematic case - a complete uninstall and
install) is working fine in regards to init.d scripts

Cheers
Andrija

Hi everyone,

I wanted to send out an e-mail about the hackathon that we held in Montréal
this past Wednesday (after the two days of the CloudStack Collaboration
Conference that took place on Monday and Tuesday).

We spent the first 1.5 hours discussing issues we’d like to see addressed
and/or new features we might be considering. I’ve provided the current list at
the bottom of this message.

In particular, one item of note is that people seemed interested in quarterly
remote meetups. The intent of such meetups would be to sync with each other on
what we’re working on so as to not duplicate effort. We may also have people
present a bit about a recent feature or item of interest (similar to what we do
at conferences). In addition, these meetups could provide a nice checkpoint to
see how we are doing with regards to the items listed below.

Please take a moment, scan through the list, ask questions, and/or send out
additional areas that you feel the CloudStack Community should be focusing on.

If you were present at the hackathon, feel free to update us on what progress
you might have made at the hackathon with regards to any topic below.

Thanks!

Hi guys,

I’ve did some upgrade testing of RC2. I did upgraded database successfully from
4.5.2.2, 4.9.3 and 4.11.1, but unfortunately I’ve run into a connectivity issue
between vmware 4.5u3 environments.

Looks like TLS1.2 is not supported at first glance.

Caused by: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Server chose TLSv1, but
that protocol version is not enabled or not supported by the client.

I’m guessing we’ll need an RC3.

Hi there,

Upgrading 4.11.0 to 4.11.1 we found an interesting problem in our (well
played) staging infrastructure.

During SSVN provisioning, a somewhat "premium" configuration is detected
(well we're using noredist since ... ever?).
So the SSVM is configured with
  resource=com.cloud.storage.resource.PremiumSecondaryStorageResource
instead of

resource=org.apache.cloudstack.storage.resource.NfsSecondaryStorageResource

In fact this particular setup always used (and should further use) simple
NFS as Secondary Storage.

Sorry, but I can't find the real source
of com.cloud.configuration.dao.ConfigurationDao#isPremium() and how to set
this to false.

If anyone could shed some light?

Thank You!

Re: 4.11.1 RC / VMs with UserDispersingPlanner won't deploy

2018-05-31 Thread Boris Stoyanov
Hi Ivan,

I’m using a SO with the UD Planner and I have no tags on my hosts, I was able
to deploy VMs on both KVM and VMware hosts.
Could this be an issue with your env? Can you send logs we could look at?

Regards,
Boris Stoyanov.
