The answer to that "baited" question is: Everybody with any kind of role
within the ASF can be identified, EXCEPT MODERATORS,
Unidentified = Hidden = Secret.

> A moderator is just a committer as you and me. Some are also a PMC

Since moderators are unidentified, I cannot say with any certainty if it
is still the case, but I have reason to believe that in years past there
have been one or more moderators who were not also committers. It's not
clear to me how that is/was possible, but Rob Weir advised me of this
when I first became a moderator.

I would very much appreciate that you stop publicly lecturing me about
how the ASF is structured. I joined this project at the same time as you
and possibly a little before you. So I understand how things work, even
if I do not always agree with "The Apache Way".

Since your offer is buried within a thread that most subscribers have

The inbox of all moderators receive posts to owner-, which
effectively is direct contact, but if it is a matter of concern, let's
leave the status quo.

I really would like to end my involvement in this thread now.

You are creating an issue where a problem does not exist. Using your
example Cells D1:D12 formatted as numbers with zero decimal places means
that only integer values are entered in those cells. Fill cells D1:D10
with the integer value 1234 and in cell D12 enter =SUM(D1:D10) which
returns the result 12,340

Go back to the issue Peter raised; "If you enter 1234 Calc will enter
12.34 in the cell". When cells are formatted as numbers with zero
decimal places, typing 1234 will NEVER change the value to 12.34. The
cell value will always be an integer.

Hi Ed,

How-to questions like this are best addressed to the user support list
us...@openoffice.apache.org

You can find the answer to your question by clicking on the Calc Help
menu or pressing the F1 function key on your keyboard, then type grids.

Summary: From the Calc menu select "Format Page..." and in the dialog
(window) that opens click to tick/check the "Grid" under the "Print"
option of the "Sheet" tab.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I wanted to download the new update 4.1.2 but during installation

of refusing I finally agreed, but downloading this application crashes
and installation stops.
Consequently I can not install the new update due to the imposition of

Is it not time to _*SERIOUSLY*_ review the distribution of our binaries
via SourceForge?

Rory O'Farrell and others dutifully expend their valuable time advising
"unaware" users NOT to click on download links and buttons after they
are redirected to the SourceForge mirror page. While commendable, this
is a "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" approach.

No matter what efforts SourceForge make to "weed out" fraudulent and
malware links, our mailing lists and forums continue to receive a steady
stream of download problem messages from "unaware" users.

There is no way to prove this discourages individuals and organizations
from using AOO software, but continuously published reports of AOO
distributing "unwanted" and/or "malware" programs reflects badly on us
and by association the ASF.

I have no personal "gripe" against SourceForge and Roberto Galoppini's
support in this area is invaluable. However, I do not understand, or
find any reasonable explanation, why our download page does not redirect
to the ASF's own mirror network:
https://www.apache.org/mirrors/
where our binaries are already being served by 200+ mirrors around the
world.

Well, if it is true (and it is true) that the private list is visible to
400+ people (more than this list's subscribers) and that, while mistakes
are surely possible and surely have happened, the private list is not
being abused and discussions that do not belong there are often moved to
the dev list with full context, then I feel it's important to point it
out. You are suggesting a usage pattern of the private list that is far
 beyond reality.

Apache OpenOffice is a model of transparency compared to other, even
open source, projects. The importance some people give to private
conversations is really, really exaggerated. But if we continue
discussing this we fall easily in a conspiracy theory model, so I
prefer that we get more concrete. On my behalf, be reassured that when I
see a private conversation that ought to be public I will point it out.

I have not and as far as I can tell neither has Simon, claimed a general
lack of transparency within the project and I totally reject your
suggestion that I have made any exaggerated claims or I am touting
some kind of conspiracy theory. However, there was a failure of
communication in the original PMC FAQ update thread.

 +100%
 Thank you Simon.

 What about actually doing something?

Is such a hostile and insulting attack necessary?

When I first posted to the original thread I had already collected the
information I thought was being asked for and was ready to ACTUALLY DO
SOMETHING by updating the page, if that was acceptable.

You Simon and Dave combined already
have all privileges needed to keep the page with moderators' names
updated if you believe it's really important for you. If you two pledge
to keep it updated, I, for one, will see my primary reason for removing
names (i.e., they are blatantly outdated) addressed. If you are willing
to help, we can surely fix details.

This is no longer about the trivial issue of keeping moderator's names
on a page, or if Simon and I think it is important. The decision on that
matter has been taken and as far as I am concerned it is now closed.

The issue here is that in the original thread both Simon and I asked
totally innocent, non-controversial questions and received answers which
ranged from, the information is already there (if you know where to find
it), to being accused of being on some kind of name publishing ego trip.

I do not question that the ASF strives to be open and transparent, but
in the area of community building the AOO project is sadly lacking.
Comments, such as you have expressed here are, to say the least,
discouraging.

 Regards,
   Andrea.

Obviously I wasn't party to the private discussion, but that seems an odd
decision in a community that's so transparent in its intent an
implementation. I suggest the lists of moderators be made available
 somewhere because:

   - The identities of the list moderators seem very hard to determine by
   any other means
   - This mode of contribution gets little enough recognition as it is, and
the people contributing this way should be recognised.

Since we have and owner@ to every list, there are no need to publish the
 individual names.

There is a private@ list but we still publish the names of the PMC
 members...

 S.

 I agree with Simon.

 -louis

I agree that contributions should be recognized but moderator of mailing
lists is of course a low burner. Keeping the info up-to-date requires
more work and the benefit is really low.

If somebody want his name listed we can of course do that, I think it is
not important here and real contributors have their stage somewhere else.

But who knows finding 100 more moderator is potentially easier than
finding 100 new developers and we can shine with 100 new contributors.
If we have a limit per list I step back as moderator ;-)

 Juergen (still smiling)

OK! One last attempt to clarify and resolve a trivial issue, that has
become clouded in misunderstanding and mistranslated into some kind of
bike-shedding subject.

It is _NOT_ about anyone WANTING to be recognised, or having their name
listed somewhere.

It is _NOT_ about limiting the number of moderators and there is no need
for any existing moderators to step back.

There is _NO_ need to show moderators email addresses, the list owner
address works perfectly well.

It is _NOT_ important where the information is made available.

The one and only thing I suggested is that we have a simple, easy way
for any of us to check ensure that we have adequate list moderator
coverage.

Maintenance of the information is trivial:
1. A new moderator is authorised and at the same time his name is added
to the page.
2. An existing moderator opts-out of the responsibility and at the same
time his name is removed from the page.

Dave (a bit frustrated, but still smiling)

With the exception of a couple of pseudonyms (real names known
internally), every Apache committer's name is published:
 https://people.apache.org/committer-index.html

yeah but that does not tell which mailing lists we listen in on and a lot
of other things we do, it does e,g. not tell that I am AOO Chair.

Rubbish! Another public page:
https://people.apache.org/committer-index.html#jani
Clearly and unequivocally states:
Q jani Jan Iversen corinthia, incubator, incubator-pmc,
infrastructure, infrastructure-interest, labs, labs-pmc, member,
openoffice, openoffice-pmc, pmc-chairs, tac-pmc /Q

See also:
https://people.apache.org/committers-by-project.html#pmc-chairs

Sorry, but I don't get your point about which mailing lists we listen
in on and a lot of other things we do. Who cares, but you make it
sounds like you have something to hide. Also, who are we in this
context, PMC members, project members, or everybody?

 Our Mailing List page states:
Q Each mailing list at OpenOffice has at least two human moderators./Q

Without referring to private information you or the PMC may hold tell
me (off-list if you wish) who the TWO moderators are for the API mailing
 list?

Are we ashamed of who we are and what we do?

no way, but this is simply an information that has no relevance in my
 opinion.

If people want to tell the world what they do in such detail, they should
publish it, we should not publish peoples names without the consent of the
 people.

It was published for years, so why now do we have something to hide?

My concern is not so much having the list of names, but more that it is
forced to participate. If people added themself to the list it would be ok
because it would be their own choice.

 rgds
 jan i

Again, I don't understand forced to participate. Nobody is forced to
participate in this project by simply identifying the role they have
volunteered to undertake.

Your concerns are unfounded, Simon Phipps, myself and other moderators
openly publish our identities and email addresses on this list and other
public forums, so why would we become delicate sensitive little things
about our names being published for a useful purpose.

Cut to the chase:
You did not answer my question about the names of the TWO moderators for
our API mailing list because:
1. You don't know.
2. There is only ONE moderator for that list.
3. This information is not publicly available.

My reason for persisting with this somewhat trivial issue is that we
(those with an interest in project at large, not just Infra, the PMC, or
some other sacred inner sanctum) would not have a ready source of
reference if moderation, for whatever reason, ceased. Unlikely in the
case of the dev list, but a definite possibility for the API list if the
one current moderator got run over by a bus.

If it will alleviate your concerns, I will post to the owner of each of
our public lists asking for an affirmative response to the question of
publishing moderator names on the mailing list page.

See also the post from Dennis, who summarises this in more succinct and
less abrasive terms.

 Thanks,

 S.

Re: Concerns about the AOO community

Chuck Davis wrote:
I've seen quite a number of new people show up here lately
indicating interest coming from someplace. If one out of 10 of them
sticks and becomes a regular contributor the project is in a very

Agreed.

My observations regarding LO: 1) They've copied some features from
MS Office that make it equally difficult to useIt's not as
 pleasant to use as AOO.

Can you please give some specific examples of what you mean by copied
some features from MS Office?

I have been an OOo user since Sun (theoretically) open sourced the code
and today I use/test both AOO and LO. Can you please enlighten me in
what way LO is more difficult to use than AOO? I am obviously missing
something, because I find them equally pleasant to use.

It's very unfortunate the distributions have adopted LO in lieu of
 AOO.

That's mainly because a number of the distros were already unhappy about
the control Sun/Oracle held over the code. When TDF/LO was formed some
of code from the (distro driven) Go-OO fork was merged into LO. This
happened well before Oracle gave the OOo trademark and domain name to
the ASF.

 2) Their constant AOO bashing is a real turn-off for me and I hope
others as well. I don't think I want their people in our camp.

Sorry, but this is just FUD. Ignoring the Weir - Vignoli blog battle and
other external sources, please give examples of Their constant AOO
bashing on any the TDF/LO controlled sources (eg. website, mailing
lists, etc.). For every instance you can sight, I can match two for one
the near vitriol I have seen poured out on this list alone.

In another part of this thread there is talk of better cooperation
between the two projects. Comments such as I don't think I want their
people in our camp. only serve to further promote the silly negative
us them attitude. It is not a competition, because neither project
is selling anything.

Reality Check: Other than the occasional defector :)) (in both
directions) you don't have to concern yourself about their people
moving into your camp. There is no possibility that TDF is going give
up years of hard work and expense and hand LO over to the ASF, any more
than there is of the ASF handing AOO over to TDF.

 3) They seem to be very proud of getting rid of Java and replacing
it with Python. I've looked at Python a little and it seems to me
any language dependent on indentation rather than syntax is
justdumb! There is nothing wrong with Java -- especially
now that OpenJDK is the reference implementation and is being worked
on by every major player except MS.

The movement to get rid of Java has been around even before Sun sold
out to Oracle. There are developers working on AOO code today who are on
record promoting the removal or reduced reliance on Java.

Python is also supported by AOO.

 4) LO seems to have major QC issues. The quality is definitely
several notches below where AOO rests in my experience.

Is this just fan-boy talk, or can you sight anything to substantiate
this (apparently ill-informed) claim. I closely follow the development
of both projects and my experience is very different to yours.

These are just my observations as a long time OpenOffice user. And
Apache has some very interesting related projects (i.e. ODF Toolkit)
that can propel ODF as a standard reporting framework as well as the
new project to read and write OOXML for document exchange.

True. Hopefully it will not be too long before the fruits of these
projects are incorporated into AOO.

The TDF has been closely involved with external projects working on
improvements to the ODF - OOXML document compatibility. I don't have
the details to hand right now, but IIRC the code improvements are, or
will be, made available under Apache License, Version 2.0

My advice: stay the course. Emphasize quality and dependability
over glitz. If developers are not attracted to AOO on those terms
they're not developers the project needs. Those of us in business
just need a tool to get our work done and it doesn't need to be fancy
-- just dependable. LO falls on it's face at this point.

Please, please, please can we stop this childish nonsense. There is no
reason why we should care, one way or the other, if LO is worse or
better than AOO. Our only interests should be:

1. Making AOO as good as we can possibly make it.

2. Where possible work cooperatively with TDF and others in the interest
of promoting and improving ODF. We already do this on matters of security.

It is highly unlikely that AOO is going to die or disappear in the
foreseeable future and the same holds true for LO. If, for whatever
reason. the existence of TDF/LO upsets anyone here, I suggest they get
over it and move on.

Hi Joan,

What you describe sounds like you are modifying an existing sheet and
you may have moved/removed one or more rows, which in turn has moved the
month cells (what you call The Header) into a row that is a merge of a
number of cells in that row. Try this:

  * Click inside the (header) month cell (eg. January).
  * From Calc's main menu select the /Format - Merge Cells - Merge
and Center Cells/ option.

If my guess is correct, you will then have removed the merge and
reinstated the 12 individual cells.

Hope this helps.

of course we are grateful for the tip.

Agreed!

It seems, however, that Dave did not make that clear enough.

From John's reactionary unnecessarily abusive response, that is
clearly the case.

He appears to be more annoyed by people who mention trouble with download
than with those fraudulent people who provide downloads infected with malware.

100% incorrect! Regrettably, my commentary came across to John and
possibly others, in a way that it was not intended.

Please be so kind as to tell us from where you downloaded the infected
 version of OpenOffice

That would be interesting, but of little value. OpenOffice.org, Apache
OpenOffice, LibreOffice and numerous other OSS projects projects have
suffered this kind of fraud since the internet came into existence. Even
if we could cut off this one Google fraudster, he/it would simply
reappear under a different identity, along with hundreds of other
like-minded fraudsters out there.

Dave conveniently forgot to ask for that.

conveniently... What do you mean by this snotty attitude?

John, do you see how Max's above hopefully innocent comment can be
misinterpreted into something that was not intended. This is one of the
pitfalls of trying to provide user support without the ability to read
the mind of those who pose the question/issue.

 We apologise for the misunderstanding.

+1 from me.

and hope that by now you found yourself an uninfected download for OpenOffice.

With the wisdom of hindsight, I think we can be confident that this is
the case.

 Yours sincerely

 Max

After more than decade of attempting to provide support and
contributions to the OOo/AOO project, it appears that I lack the ability
to contribute anything worthwhile. Therefore, I will remove myself from
Apache and move on to other interests.

On my recommendation, a friend in Salzburg tried to install
Openoffice.org on his iMac on Thursday 20 Feb and found it was infected

Manage to clean out the mess, but it left me looking stupid as I have

 Be warned.

 John Barrett Rose

If whatever it was you installed contained the malware you say, then it
was not Apache OpenOffice and you were hoodwinked into downloading from
a malicious website. Regrettably, this is something that Apache
OpenOffice is unable to prevent.

The only official download website is:

The download link there will take you to the official SourceForge.net

You need to install a 32 bit Java. One such is at

The 32 bit Javas have i586 in their name. After installing this, you should

Tutorials for OpenOffice is now being worked on, but there is a lot of

You must not have downloaded from www.openoffice.org/download. From that site
there are no add-ons integrated wth the OpenOffice dowenload. I recomeend
that you remove the program entirely, run a virus and malware scan, then
redownload from the above site only (or as redirected by it to Sourceforge)
 and reinstall again.

To remove the faulty program entirely you may need to use something like
RevoUninstaller at its most aggressive settings.

I cannot find an open jira issue, so problaly not. There has been a couple
of mail threads with infra to the subject.

I think the right way would be to file an issue, not with the discussion,
but with the outcome and a request for it to be implemented.

I recently started a document with 4 columns. I then tried to have no
columns on subsequent pages. As far as I can tell, it can't be done
without removing the columns from the first page. Can you incorporate
some method of easily discontinuing columns in a document?

 Hi Donald,

Please add page break with a different page style, and then to modify the

 Hope it helpful for you.Thanks.

 Hi, Donald,

Columns are a property of page styles and sections. For what you want,
simply assign a different page style to your second page: one with only one
column. The Default style will probably suffice. The new style will
 propagate to the following pages.

Questions like yours are better directed to our users' mailing list:

Do we have someone willing to replace Albino, preferably (but not
necessarily) in the American time zones? It is better to replace a
 moderator rather than removing one.

The task is very easy and not very time-consuming: you will receive a
notification for every posting attempt to the doc@ and api@ lists by a
non-member, and (if it's not spam) you simply reply to the
notification message to approve the post.

When Albino first mentioned that he was unable to continue moderation of
the api list (19.3.2013), I offered to be his replacement. I already
moderate for dev, doc and marketing. For the time being, there is not a
lot else I can usefully contribute to the project. Hopefully, this will
change in the near future.

Feel free to add me to the list of api moderators. My time zone is UTC+1

I think you will need to enter a JIRA issue for Infra to be removed as
 a moderator.

It would be good also if there was another volunteer for the doc and
api mailing lists, to help with that.

I am already moderating doc. Feel free to add me to api.

 Hi all,

this is a call for vote on releasing a minor respin of Apache OpenOffice
3.4.1 to support 8 new languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian Bokmal,
Polish, Korean, Basque, Asturian, Scottish Gaelic). The Hungarian
version is repackaged and a Hungarian dictionary is now included.

This release is a minor update to support further languages but no bug
fixes. We decided to keep the effort minimal and updated only the new
languages and no further minor bug fixes. It is the last minor update
including incubating in the name and we do that to integrate smoothly
in the naming scheme of the current release and to keep the download simple.

The source release for AOO 3.4.1 will be renewed and is based now on
revision 1435053 from branch AOO34. For our broad user base we built and
provide convenience binary packages on the same revision for all new
 languages.

The source release candidate can be found under
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341srcrelease

The convenience binary full install sets for the new languages can be
 found under
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341fullsets

The convenience binary language packs for the new languages can be found
 under
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOO341languagepacks

Please vote on releasing this respin package as a complement to our
already released Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (incubating).

The vote starts now and will be open for 72 hours until:

Saturday, 26 January: 2013-01-26 10:00am UTC+1.

The vote of PMC members is binding but we invite all people to vote (non
binding) on this RC. We would like to provide a release that is
supported by the majority of our project members.

[ ] +1 Release this respin package as complement Apache OpenOffice
 3.4.1 (incubating)

This idea has come up on another thread, where we've been discussed
the future of the documentation effort and a future call for
volunteers. We'd like a dedicated list for these efforts.

 Name: d...@openoffice.apache.org OR d...@openoffice.apache.org (I
don't have a strong preference for the name)

Moderators: Please respond if you can volunteer as moderator. We
should aim for 2 or 3 geographically dispersed.

I'll wait 72 hours, and if no objections we can ask Andrea to submit
the form for the new list creation.

 Regards,

Hi Rob,

I am currently at UTC +1 if you want me to moderate the (long overdue)
documentation list. For reasons I might explain at another time,
moderation is all can contribute to the project for the time being.
Although I will try to mentor/guide any newcomers who want to work on
user documentation.

The stability of OpenOffice is a matter of interaction with your operating
system. You need to tell us what your operating system is and what symptoms
you are experiencing. You may also find it of use to search the Forum at
 http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/

I doubt that any such instability is caused by a spam attack; the current
spam attack is to the mwiki pages.

Just to further clarify Rory's reply. It is not the program itself which
came under spam attack, it was the Wiki area of the project's web

hardworking volunteers.

Please post back to this list or the user support list
