You have access to the Apache CMS system, as described here:

 http://openoffice.apache.org/docs/edit-cms.html
If you do not have experience on html, try the Browser-based editing
workflow based on the JavaScript bookmarklet described there.

This won't work if you want to change the headline, but indeed it's very
helpful to know how to use it. Did you already choose a password at
https://id.apache.org/ ? If not, follow the reset your password
 procedure.

The bookmarklet will ask for your Apache ID (wlada) and your password.
Submit your change, then you can Publish the site.
Please try with something very simple first, like adding a comma or
changing a word in the text, so you learn how it works.

To change the main headline, you need to do something more complex. The
file to edit is this one:
 http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/
 content/sr-latn/brand.mdtext?view=markup
You are welcome to do so yourself, if you setup an SVN client, but I don't
know if you are already familiar with it and what system you use. What you
need is an SVN Client that you will use to checkout the URL
 https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/sr-latn;
then you will edit the brand.mdtext file with any text editor and
commit it back using your Apache ID and password. A popular beginner's
choice for SVN clients under Windows is http://tortoisesvn.net/
 downloads.html

Once you entered the CMS with the bookmarklet from the NL main page, update
the directory and browse the directory content, you can edit brand.mdtext
without problems using the CMS interface, just selecting it from the list.
I've never used SVN for that.

Ricardo

I had tried to do it with the CMS in this specific case
 http://www.openoffice.org/sr-latn/
but brand.mdtext is empty for me in the CMS. This is why I said that it
had to be edited in SVN. But topnav.mdtext is instead working as you say
and can be edited in the CMS. Are you seeing the same? Maybe we hit some
CMS bug with this specific file?

OK, now I remember what happened. I think I commented this problem on
another thread, but it get lost from my memory: the file *seems* empty, but
the problem is that the field for the page header content (the one that
needs to be changed[1]) is below those empty fields and there is no way to
scroll down the page. Unless you have a really big monitor and your browser
maximized, the only way to access to that part of the page is to zoom it
out (Ctrl-scroll down), and well, firefox remember that kind of settings so
next time I went there everything was accessible... so probably yes, there
is a bug on that page that do not show the scroll bar, hiding the page
header field.

[1] there are three parameters in that field: announce, announceurl and
announcetip

Regards,
Ricardo

I've never used SVN for that.

On the contrary, I do most of my editing in SVN, so I cannot notice if a
given brand.mdtext file is editable in the CMS. If in general (for other
languages) it is possible to edit brand.mdtext in the CMS then we have a
 bug in this case.

   Andrea.

 It would make more snse
So this would work like we did for 3.4.1 when we added new
languages. Why not call it 4.0.2? Well, we already discussed it,
but the main reasons would be: for the languages already released
in 4.0.1, 4.0.2 would be identical (example: 4.0.1 in French would
be identical to 4.0.2 in French) since all commits in the meantime
have been done to trunk; a new 4.0.2 release takes a much larger
effort than a 4.0.1 language update, so it is harder to find
volunteers and this is worth doing only if we have some important
bugfixes for 4.0.1 to include (and I don't see any at the moment).

It would make more sense for it to be 4.0.1 unless there were critical
bug fixes that would justify a 4.0.2. The only potential glitch that I
see is handling the release notes. I have a couple of ideas that I
will lay out in a separate thread if we decide to go ahead with a
 language only release.

It seems there is something wrong, after all. If I try to log-in I get the
too many connections error. If I log-out and immediately log-in again, I
get again the too many connections error too. Unless the attack is really
massive and quick, there is another problem here.

If anyone is interested, I've uploaded a CSV of the raw data I used

You should be able to import the data right into Calc and do
 additional analysis.

I also uploaded the R script I used to generate the charts for the blog
 post:

 https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/75m.R

(We really should work on a way to call R from Calc, pass data ranges,
return bitmaps for charts, etc. It could be very powerful.)

There was an extension for that:

but it seems unmaintained. Not sure if it works now (or if it ever worked:
I never used it).

Any news on this? The pootle project for the extension site is still empty

In general we need .pot (po template files for en-US), these act as

Changing the download icon is easy since we already have the updated
 graphics.

Changing header, if what we have so far is your Draw file, needs some
adaptation work to the forum CSS. I've already done it for another
candidate header and, unless somebody else is going to do it, I can try
producing a CSS implementation for this one too, even though this one is
harder since backgrounds need to be adapted.

The last step will be materially putting the new files online, but this
 is not particularly problematic.

Re: Websites headers (forum, wiki, main site, ...)

2013-10-25 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
2013/9/22 Ricardo Berlasso rgb.m...@gmail.com

 (top posting)

Summarizing the discussion on the forums.

There is agreement on a design for the forum header. You can see a mock-up
 here

 http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/download/file.php?id=17876mode=view

Advantage: it uses the official logo without modifications, by changing
the blue on the header for another, lighter colour already in use on the
forum so there is no need for a full review.

Disadvantage: it's just a mock-up I made picking elements from here and
 there, no code exists.

In fact, I tried to build the logo with the globe and the FORUM part
 from Apache_OpenOffice_Logo_ChrisR_selected_2013-06_optim.svg file, but I
was not able to open it right (I think it was already commented on the list
that there are problems rendering that SVG).

My best attempt is on this Draw file

 http://people.apache.org/~rgb-es/Forum-Header-2.odg

where I just cropped the logo used on the extension site and added the
right part using Draw. (On this document you can also find the last header
 mock-up version).

There is also agreement (at least, nobody opposed it) on updating the
download logo with the new design

 http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/download/file.php?id=17646

 Regards,
 Ricardo

I would like to start discussing this again. As commented on the previous
email, there is agreement on the forum header design and on changing the
download icon. Which are the steps needed to implement this change on all
NL forums?

Ricardo

Re: Reopening the Vietnamese Forum

2013-10-14 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
2013/10/14 Drew Jensen drewjensen.in...@gmail.com

Hi Phan, Imacat, Janl, et al

Just now getting back on-line since the last email here. I haven't gone by
the forums yet Imacat but I'm quite sure all is well. As for Terry's
account, it seems to me it should of gone also. Same for my account, there
is no good reason, which I can see, to have admin rights at any of the
 forums presently.

On the ES forums, I just created a new group called Administradores
eméritos (Emeritus administrators) and put you and Terry there. Same
colour of admins but same rights of volunteers (normal users + access to
the hidden subforums, nothing else).

I mean, while I think it is great from you that you ask for removal of the
privileges that you are not planning to use, it's not right to just
downgrade your accounts after all you did for the forums ;)

Regards,
Ricardo

@Janl, yes I should be hitting the forums more (easy to do 'more' since I'm
starting at zero) but I don't really need admin rights to be useful there -
and if I did become active, seeing something where such rights could be put
to use, well then I can always ask for them. It seems to me to be the
better way to go, rather then having long dormant accounts.

@Phan - thank you for taking this on, it is very good to see the site open
 again.

 Thanks,

 //drew

I can understand that, and agree its a good idea. I simply wanted to make
you aware that you might need a appl. admin to change the configuration.
The admin situation is up for discussion (headed by another pmc member),
and have been discussed quite a lot, but no decision has been made. The
 way
I worked and suggested to work in future seems to be too restrictive for
some people, as a consequence the applications on our servers are
 currently
not being maintained, apart for security.

As we both know, there is work in progress to start a admin ML, which
 would
fit this purpose very well (headed by another pmc member), however after
the initial discussion, is seems nothing happens (at least no jira has
 been
created). I would not recommend a ML for each forum, the overhead
(moderators etc) are too big, instead have the mailer put the forum name
 in
  the header.

So is there a reason why the admin mailing list could not be used for
 this?

People here is quite used to mailing list, but most users don't. In fact, I
know many people that will never send an email to a mailing list, specially
if public: lot of people do not want to expose their email addresses on
public lists.

I assume the traffic level would be low enough that it would
not be necessary to have N mailing lists for N forums. So using a
single ML point of contact for admin questions could make sense here.

The other alternative is an email alias. So no mailing list but just
forwarding of emails to a group.

That makes sense. We can open somewhere a free account for each NL forum
and then set an aoo alias to it.

Ricardo

Sadly enough we have many good initatives like it, that are thoroughly
discussed and then left to a slow death when it comes to the actual work.

Sorry about that. We had that little thing called a release that

Well, I'm using AOO on a 64 bit Linux system every day without problems ;)
One of the problems on the list was a duplicate of another problem solved
on 4.0.0, some I cannot reproduce (I commented on one of them) and on
several I have no idea about the problem they describe, because they refers
to a particular test case. I only have looked at reports against Writer,
though.

 Short and direct.

Is there anything else worth mentioning, from a project perspective?
I tried to avoid simply repeating what the release notes already say.

To mention the MS Excel export improvement is really important as it
was (one of) the topic with the highest number of reported 4.0.0 issues
(with 6 duplicates and 9 votes).

If I understand correctly we'll go live with the announcement on
Tuesday. So we'll want to ensure the website download page is ready
 first.

Yes, let me check on Monday evening (Hamburg time) if it's already
working. Then we can do the public announcement on Tuesday with working
 download links.

I've updated the download webpages, so that now 4.0.1 is the favorite
download. Of course still only in the staged area:

 http://ooo-site.staging.**apache.org/download/index.htmlhttp://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/index.html

Please test yourself. For me every link is working that I've clicked on
but of course I've not tested every platform, language and link.

 *Important:*
Avoid any changes and especially publishing on the webpages until Tuesday.
Otherwise the new 4.0.1 download links will go online without announcement
 and public note.

Taking profit of this freeze, I've just updated the staging ES site with
the 4.0.1 announcement (I'll be short of time during the week).

Ricardo

P.S.: Personally, I am currently not sure about mentioning in the
release notes that the performance of the saving .xls files had been
 improved.

Many users complained about the XLS file saving performance. For them the
considerable performance increase of 4.0.1 relative to 4.0.0 is quite
noteworthy. Whether such a change is a fix, a boost, an enhancement, an
improvement or just a task done is a point that could fill a whole
dissertation. Whether these distinct terms overlap or not or how much opens
another research topic for linguists. But I think we can agree that it is
 noteworthy.

Re: Websites headers (forum, wiki, main site, ...)

2013-09-21 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
(top posting)

Summarizing the discussion on the forums.

There is agreement on a design for the forum header. You can see a mock-up
here

http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/download/file.php?id=17876mode=view

Advantage: it uses the official logo without modifications, by changing the
blue on the header for another, lighter colour already in use on the forum
so there is no need for a full review.

Disadvantage: it's just a mock-up I made picking elements from here and
there, no code exists.

In fact, I tried to build the logo with the globe and the FORUM part from
Apache_OpenOffice_Logo_ChrisR_selected_2013-06_optim.svg file, but I was
not able to open it right (I think it was already commented on the list
that there are problems rendering that SVG).

My best attempt is on this Draw file

http://people.apache.org/~rgb-es/Forum-Header-2.odg

where I just cropped the logo used on the extension site and added the
right part using Draw. (On this document you can also find the last header
mock-up version).

There is also agreement (at least, nobody opposed it) on updating the
download logo with the new design

Re: Can we do this email thing (whatever it is called)?

2013-09-17 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
2013/9/17 Rob Weir robw...@apache.org

When I purchase a commercial software package I register and then I am
sometimes offered a weekly tips email. It covers tips on how to use
the product, how to get support, FAQs, etc. It is very useful for new
 users.

But this is not a typical announcement list thing. Users don't all
get the same email each week. But everyone who is new gets the week
0 email, and a week later they would get the week 2 email, while
someone else in that same week who is new gets the week 0 email, etc.

Is this clear? It is sort of a system where the user gets a
programmed set of emails on a schedule.

Does anyone know what this is called? And are there open source
products or free services that support this?

I think this could be very useful for new OpenOffice users. Currently
we give them a huge torrent of information on the download page, and
in release notes. I doubt more than 5% of the information gets
absorbed because it it is too much. But if we could do it via weekly
tip emails, then it we'd probably get more information across.

Another approach would be via a feed that is loaded by AOO itself at
first load. Many products have something like that, a tips dialog
that gives a new tip every time the product starts, or once a week or
 something.

The tip of the day. I think that something like that is less intrusive
than a registration process, specially if there is a don't show again
check-box. In fact, I think it is better to avoid any kind of
registration process.

Ricardo

2013/9/6 Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@gmail.com

 Hi,

we are currently uploading a new snapshot build based on the SNAPSHOT
tag revision 1520285 (corresponding rev. on AOO401 branch 1520244).

The upload is ongoing and takes some time. The wiki page reflects the
new build and if a link is not yet working, please try again later.

This snapshot includes additional languages Serbian Cyrillic and
 Vietnamese and further lang updates.

Vietnamese is currently not available on Windows due to build problems.
For creating the download package we have to use the unicode version of
nsis which have support for Vietnamese. But there is some more work
necessary and I won't be able investigate in this problem for this
snapshot. Easy and fast switch to the unicode version doesn't work.
Sorry but Vietnamese is on risk.

 For details please check

 http://people.apache.org/~jsc/developer-snapshots/snapshot/snapshot_rev1520244.htm

Details of the former snapshot can be found under

 http://people.apache.org/~jsc/developer-snapshots/snapshot/snapshot_rev1518667.htm

My plan is to finally update the languages on Monday, that means an
indirect extension of the translation deadline until Sunday Sep 7th.

I plan also to integrate further bug fixes until Wednesday 11th.

Please work with the snapshots and report issues asap that we can take
 potential problems into account.

With AOO 4.1 we will shift to a beta release cycle but not for the 4.0.1.

There is a small problem with the md5 and sha256 files for Linux builds
that makes the -c parameter fail: instead of listing the file name there
is a path, for example

check-sume-code
/tmp/snapshots/Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.1_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_es.tar.gz

instead of just

check-sume-code
Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.1_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_es.tar.gz

Win and Mac files are OK.

  a) allow committers to commit directly in pootle (removes 5)
  b) allow committers to run svn up (req. a simple php page and removes

Python 3 and AOO

On the ES forum there was a question about python 3 support on AOO. On the

set on build time?
- are there plans of when python 3 will be set on by default?

2013/8/30 Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@gmail.com

 Hi,

we have prepared a new snapshot build for AOO 4.0.1 for Windows, MacOS
and Linux based on the SNAPSHOT tag.

The SNAPSHOT tag rev. 1518670 is based on revision 1518667 on branch AOO401

Working great on my system!

We have started to provide Linux builds to start early testing of our
builds and ensure that they can be used as replacement for Ariels
builds. We build also on CentOS5 systems that should have the baseline.

It seems that language packs are missing for Linux, both 32 and 64 bits on
all languages.

Ariel pointed out that he won't be able to deliver the builds in the
future starting with the beginning of September. At this point I would
like to thank you Ariel for his support in the past. I know what it
means to do the builds, sign and upload it.

Indeed, thanks Ariel!

The wiki page is updated and for Linux you can find archive builds as
well directly in the directory (not linked via the wiki).

The differences between this and the last snapshot can be found under
 http://people.apache.org/~jsc/developer-snapshots/snapshot/izlist.htm

Please note that the translation updates are not yet marked as fixed. I
have taken a snapshot from Pootle to support early testing. Please add
comments in the issue or mark it as fixed if no further updates via
Pootle can be expected. It will help to reduce the workload on my side.

I'm waiting for some feedback and then I'll mark the issue for ES
translation as solved.

Regards
Ricardo

Updated languages are: sk, nl, en-GB, es, km, pl, zh-TW, pt

NOTE: the upload is ongoing, if a link is not yet working try it later.
I will be offline until Monday ...

 Thanks

Within reason (we cannot include too many fonts) and within license
limitations (Apache 2 being the easiest one to integrate) we could
 include
  a few more fonts.

Droid aside, do you have a short list of specific fonts (with download
links and license information) worth integrating?

Beside Droid and the fonts we already include (arimo, tinos, etc) it's
 not
easy to find Apache licensed fonts: most opensource fonts use SIL
 license.

It should be possible to include nearly any open source font with the
*binaries*, but I don't really see the point. Unless one of our
document templates actually uses the fonts, we're just adding clutter
to the user's machine. And if we do use the new fonts from the
templates then we would be introducing an interop issue, since those
documents would not render perfectly with older OpenOffice version,
where these new fonts would be missing.

Agree

IMHO, if we really think that new fonts are needed, then it would be
better to do it in the form of a resource-only extension, with fonts
and templates. That extension could then be installed on AOO 4.0
 systems, but also earlier systems.

Is it possible to install fonts as extensions? Installing fonts should be a
system wide operation. On the other hand, on Linux the fonts bundled on AOO
are not available system wide but installed on a folder inside AOO install
path (which increase the risk of duplicated fonts on the system). For
instance, I can only see Tinos or Arimo on AOO, they are not available
from, say, Calligra Suite unless I explicitly tell the system to look for
fonts on the AOO directory.

Now that I think of it maybe less bundled fonts is better than more. Maybe
it is better to just guide the user on how to properly install fonts on
each system and provide a general list of where open source fonts can be
found.

Note that I do not use those fonts on a regular basis (I'm a big fan of
Libertine/Biolinum family that are dual licensed SIL+GPL with font

Why aren't we just using the proper AOO logo, the same one we use on
the website, the blog, the wiki, etc.? If we can do that then the
user will understand that this is an official website. Consistency is
good for this. And then you can have a text title that says

exactly I do not understand either this discussion, why not using the

Note that I'm not in favour of using a different logo on forums, but that
I'm not particularly in favour of using the same either. I think there
 is a
difference between consistent branding and plain homogeneity and that
there is room for small changes without loosing the branding
 (underlining
  _small_).

IMO, the discussion about the forum logo have two background points. The
first one is historical: forums used a custom logo since the beginning.
This is not bad for itself... nor good: it's just a fact.

The second point is more technical: with the blue background the
 official
logo will be lost. There are two ways of solving this, a change on forum
header background or a custom logo: the solution used up to now.

I'd consider the header as a whole to be the topic of discussion.
This consists of a background color, graphical elements and text. I'd
much prefer for the AOO logo to be used in the original form. If left
aligned this gives a lot of space in the header to do other things.
For example, if we want that lifesaver graphic, maybe that could be
the three o's in Community Support Forum? Or it could be a graphic
 right aligned?

Not bat. Maybe the lifesaver with the text community forum to the right.
That add the problem of positioning the search box, though.

But I think we want to use the AOO logo prominently, to reenforce in
the mind of the user that they are on an official website. As you
know there are so many potentially damaging websites out there
pretending to be OpenOffice websites. We need to train our users to
understand when they are on an official website. The branding is a
 key part of this.

Sounds reasonable for me.

No one has cared to make make backup of the forum www over the last couple

So reverted might not be the correct english word. I used the best and

Its not really my fault, that no one cared about backup earlier, I have

Of course it is not your fault! You are doing an impressive work, and

in the admin panel (I don't have the full rights). I would say that it's a
PHPMOD that needs some tweaking in the configuration file on the server

Well, I learn about the signature problem on the forum, when someone else
reported the it ;)

It's not possible for local admins, even with full admin rights, to access
the signature regex system. Admins can only change the capcha and a couple
of other security settings so this need a super admin.

I do not see those margin you talk about and for a good reason: I never use

Default values are an important discussion point and I started a couple of

wrong and right for someone.

I propose to start (again) a discussion about default values, but not now:

I'm not saying we should NOT show margings, after all, in Optimal
width, a portion of the margins is seen, but not 50-100 pixels of
 them, on every side.

I'm not even saying the view with margins is wrong, maybe someone
wants to look at the bigger picture. But for TYPING text, optimal
width is the best. So, again, why isn't that option the default?.

Maybe the UX guys can comment?. And yes, I'd love to see a survey. And
even better, some telemetry (like Firefox' ) about how many users,
when typing or browsing text documents, end up viewing the document in
 optimize width mode).

Thanks for taking the time to answer, btw. Appreciate it.

Right. That work is incomplete. I checked it in originally, after
the logo vote, so we could start working on the product integration
immediately. But note that the above logo is not the one we
actually
used in AOO 4.0 !!

The one we actually used is this one:

 https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/branding/Apache_OpenOffice_Logo_ChrisR_selected_2013-06_Inkscape_kg.svg

This was Chris R's contest logo with some minor technical changes.
Kevin G. used this and generated the PNG/JPG files for AOO 4.0,
which
I helped check in.

My intent was to take that SVG and rename it to
 master-logo-40.svg

Again I think we do need a convention for a logo.svg as opposed to
ending with a logo-30.svg logo-40.svg logo-50.svg. An just
  incrementally
replace with the future logos as we update the SVG.

Here's the complication: The old logos are still relevant some some
purposes. For example, the PMC receives ongoing requests to approve
use of the old OpenOffice.org logo. Why would that happen? Often it
is a request by publishers who are making an e-book version of an
older print book. If their original request did not include the
e-book rights then they come back to us (and owners of every other
image they use) to request additional permissions.

I think that 'complication' is the lesser of two evils., compared to
having to manage a ever growing ammount of images. And beside that, do
  you
realize the difference in objectives between ooo-site/images/
  ooo-site/marketing/art/images/ and ooo-site/branding/images.

I dont see any reason why those issues should impact the web works of
ooo-site/images/. That folder is for website-design related work. It
 has,
or shouldnt hold any porpouse to archieve past work, nor to hold
description of any kind. I think website should be as lean and easy to
follow since we expect these conventions be followed by a rotating
  community. So again K.I.S.S.

No, it shouldn't. The ooo-site/images areas got the logo added to it
 simply
because to make it easier to locate it. The other images files there
 belong
to the home page. The svg sub-directory here is really the mis-placed
 one.

Actually I would like to see getting rid of the rasterize images
instead. Modern browsers already process SVG natively without issues.

Well, that's not completely true: even if not modern any more there are
literally millions of people still using internet explorer 8 or even older
versions, and SVG support was *partially* implemented only from IE9. IE8
needs a plug-in for SVG rendering.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics#Compatibility

Regards
Ricardo

Also there are js libraries that ensure browser compatibility like the
 svgweb.js library:
 http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/

If those complications arises, send them to marketing or branding
  workspaces.

So it may be possible, going forward, to store logos as SVN revisions
under the same name. But we cannot retroactively do this with
pre-Apache logos. And even if we could, this is harder for users of
the logo to access. It is much easier to have something like
   logo-330.svg available via HTTP.

svg are just like HTML files, they are markup languages, we dont hold
 the
index.html inmaculated and hold an apache-index.html and
  oracle-index.html,
so I dont see why SVG should be any different.

I don't agree this assessment. The svg files contain branding, or
trademark sources. These are entities which should not be changed --
resulting in a trademark violation. If there is something wrong with the
  SVG files for whatever reason,

Re: [discuss] Forum maintenance, scheduled downtime

2013-08-09 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
2013/8/10 janI j...@apache.org

 Hi.

We have now reconfigured mysql, and arist has optimized all myisam tables,
so now it actually runs pretty good.

BUT I would still loke to do updates, so the vm enters a maintainable
status, with good stable versions. In order to that I need to schedule
 downtime.

We had a long discussion in infra, and it is not possible to do a parallel
vm, due to the size of this vm, so we have to do inline (of course with
 backups etc).

 Jira https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-6652 tracks this issue.

The downtime will be in 3 blocks:

 1) Patch mysql 5.1 to highest 5.1 patch level
This is needed to convert tables to innodb.
Approx. downtime: 2-3 hours
when: a.s.a.p.

 2) update ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and add puppet with security measured
 (standard infra)
 Approx. downtime 1 day
 When: next weekend

 3) Update mysql to 5.6 and upgrade db.
 Approx. downtime 1 day
 When: next weekend.

 Any thought about this ?

If anybody is strict against it, with a good reason, please give it a -1.

 rgds
 jan I.

No problem from my part. Many thanks for your work!

 Hello,
I downloaded OpenOffice recently and I'm happy with it. However, I want
you to know that in the Spanish language version of OpenOffice Writer
 there´s a mistake: in the toolbar,Herramientas - Opciones de
autocorrección, in the upper left corner there's a checkbox that says:
Activar la compleción de palabras. The word compleción does not exist in
the Spanish language. The correct word in that case would be
completamiento (Activar el completamiento de palabras).

Maybe in some Spanish speaking Caribbean country you may find people who
use completación, but it's still a mistake.

According to the Real Academia Española, compleción is a perfectly valid
word:

http://buscon.rae.es/drae/?type=3val=compleci%C3%B3nval_aux=origen=REDRAE

while completamiento does not exists on the dictionary.

If you want to join us on the task of making the best possible ES version,
you can subscribe to the Spanish mailing list:

by sending an empty mail to

general-es-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org

Regards
Ricardo

 Thanks again for OpenOffice.

As you can see, there are two download entries: the lower one leads
nowhere (the download site report file could not be found or is not
available) while the other is an external link to google drive. The
extension used to be hosted on an external server, but the user prefers to
upload it on the extension site and delete the google drive link: the
problem is that he is not able to do so.

I would encourage the Spanish author to create a new release and unpublish
the old ones. The maximum size is 32 MByte, but there are constraints also
on the upload time. If he/she is not subscribed to this mailing-list please
ask him/her to report any error he/she gets.

Thanks, Roberto, I'll pass the info to the user and report back the results.

work finding them amongst all the full installations.

I think it would be a lot clearer for the page to be laid out
   something like the following:

This was the old system and the goal was to integrate all files that
   belong
to a specific language and platform.

I'm not sure that goal is particularly useful to the end-user.

If it's hard to read due to a small font size, this could be changed.

   It's not the font size.

Otherwise I don't thing that it's too confusing.

Well, you are a developer working on OOo.

Only for the website, not for the source code. But maybe this is no
  longer
relevant as I do this already for years.

I am trying to look at it as a non-developer who wants to download the
   software.

 [ cut here ] ---

   ...

    [ cut here ] ---

If it is possible to provide a dynamic page, then it might be nice
 to
determine the platform first (user selected; perhaps with
auto-detected default), and then use the platform to display only
 the
installation sets and language packs for that platform.

The dynamic thing is not to continue the data guessing from the main
download webpage but to simplify the modification for new releases.

The other.html is a kind of fallback when:

   a) the user is not able to use the green box on the previous main
   download
   webpage.

   b) or when he is searching for a build different from the browser's
   language
   / platform.

AFAICT it's also used when the user wants to add a new language, in
which case they already have the base installation.

Yes, and there are maybe some more possibilities.

As we don't know the reason(s) for a) there shouldn't be any
 limitations
   to
give the user the full control to find what he needs.

Yes, but that's not relevant to the issue of the page design.

And if b) it will help him as well.

Which is where the page design is very important.

The difference of full installations and language packs is described
directly above the table by your suggestion.

Yes, but I'm afraid I don't find it easy to read.
There's quite a lot of information there which is not particularly
   relevant to the end user.

Download _only_ from www.openoffice.org/download which will redirect you

Our MySQL server was unable to serve additional requests, and we restarted

We are now investigating the root cause, that seems to be related to an

 Hi all,

I've created a new webpage to offer all possible download links for a
 release version:

 http://ooo-site.staging.**apache.org/download/test/**other_tables.htmlhttp://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/other_tables.html

 Advantages:
 - created automatically, depending on the respective available
languages for the release version, controlled via the globalvars.js
   file
-- no manual changes in the other.html for every new release

 - contains links to all checksum files
-- no separate webpage just for checksum files necessary

 - all possible downloads for a respective language and OS in a single
   place

Please test and tell me your feedback.

Downloading the main package works for all platforms but ASC, md5 and
sha256 files are only available for win and mac: for Linux, all those files
gives a not found error. Beside that, the new page looks really good! +1
from my side.

 @Andrea:
I've already considered your smaller font size wish for the checksum links.

 I'll investigate the difference(s).

For Spanish, all ASC, md5 and sha256 files are here:

http://www.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.0.0/binaries/es/

For example, the table for x86_64 rpm points to

http://www.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.0.0/binaries/es/Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.0_Linux_x86-64_install_es.tar.gz.asc

while the right address is

http://www.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.0.0/binaries/es/Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.0_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_es.tar.gz.asc

so on the table is missing the package format (rpm or deb)

No. I know that path, but all Spanish dictionaries that used to be on the

Nothing wrong with the dictionary, of course, that's one of the missing
ones. But compare the link you provided with the original one for the same
 dictionary before the site migration:

 http://extensions.openoffice.org/project/es_AR-dicts

It seems *all* the addresses changed on the site upgrade and now it's a
small challenge to find them again. In fact, I started this thread after
someone from the Recursos Lingüísticos project said on l10n list he
cannot find their own extensions to update to the last dictionary version!

It seems the identifier for the extension is now the extension title
 instead of the original label.

The old dictionaries addresses are back! Now both, the long and the short
address are working, offering the same extension.

ES and IT should be very similar since I cloned IT from ES back at the

The problem is that these pages use
 http://www.openoffice.org/**download/globalvars_improved.**jshttp://www.openoffice.org/download/globalvars_improved.js
which still has 3.4.1, but since it's global configuration I didn't change
it. The current download page uses
 http://www.openoffice.org/**download/globalvars.jshttp://www.openoffice.org/download/globalvars.js
that has the correct numbers but does not work as a globalvars_improved.js
 replacement in the IT site.

So for the time being I simply linked to the English download page in
 http://www.openoffice.org/it/
and I will have a look at properly fixing this tonight, European time.

ES page link to English download page for now on both, the main page and

so this needs to be solved. I have no idea about js so I cannot go further.

This suggestion looks very reasonable to me.

In general also for me reasonable. But I don't want to rely on the

subject prefix that the users have to insert manually. Rather, I
 would

  use

some aliases to see where the mail come from.

  web-admin@ -- dev@
  wiki-admin@ -- dev@

sounds good to me, even though I dont think it will make a huge

  difference'

having a contact link on wiki will cause trafic, and users pr

  defitinition

  choose the easy road.

Yes, users are lazy, but they also know what they want. They only
write to the dev list if there is no other option that sounds closer
to what they were looking for.

So if we have have a page that gives them the appropriate options for
support, reporting bugs, admin issues, etc., and order these
  appropriately on
the page (most commonly needed at top), then we should do OK. The
idea that Dave had was to add these items to an existing contact page
that already has these other options.

So the issue is that 99.99% of the visitors to a wiki page, if they
have a question, will have a product support question. Some, but very
few, will have an admin-related question. It is OK to tell how to get
admin help, but we need to make sure that we say, in the same place,
how to get product support, and make the product support more
prominent by listing it first. That explains the ordering of
  information on the contact page:

  http://www.openoffice.org/contact_us.html

It is not perfect, but it gets most people closer to where they want
  to be.

which I why I wrote sounds good to me.

Also, to the other idea, an alternative to a set of email aliases is

to use URL's of the form:
  mailto:d...@openoffice.org?subject=[Pootle].

+1 that is a better idea, since we do not need to maintain extra
 virtual
  mail adresses
(I did not know that trix, thats pretty cool)

Yes, with this formatting it's OK.

However, we should extend the contact_us.html were needed to point to
this site from, e.g., Wiki or Forum. No need to create a new page for
such purpose - ahm, if this was planned. ;-)

I updated the webpage and added some text and links at the end:

  http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/contact_us.html

  Feel free to improve.

Does a user really need to subscribe to dev@ to get e.g. help with wiki
login ? I dont think that is very user friendly.

Indeed. Asking users that only need to resolve one problem to expose their
private email addresses on a public list is not good, but asking them to
also subscribe to a list with a hundred email/day is really bad. Just think
about the number of please unsubscribe emails that will come later...

Re: Release communications -- plans

2013-07-19 Thread Ricardo Berlasso
2013/7/18 Rob Weir robw...@apache.org

The Release Notes are starting to look very nice. It is worth
reviewing if you have not looked recently:

 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.0+Release+Notes

I noticed that the gatekeeper notice is twice on the release notes and
with the same text, one under known issues and the other near the end,
under upgrading/installation, is that intended? Maybe the second one should
be shorter, pointing to the known issues?

BTW, ES translation is ready.

Regards
Ricardo

This is the primary statement of what is in the release. The
introductory sections are general enough that this page can be used as
a self-contained announcement message. It doesn't require additional
 context.

However, we will have additional announcement statements.

 1) There will be a press release. This repeats a subset of the
contents of the release nots, but it the format and style that is
expected in a press release. Don Harbison took the lead on drafting
 that.

 2) We should also have a brief blog post. Maybe only a paragraph or
two and then a link to the Release Notes. I don't want to spend too
much time on the blog post since I am almost certain the blog will
crash under load. For that reason I'd recommend that we don't promote
the blog page via social media, etc., Promote the Release Notes
 instead.

In the past we've translated the blog post. But in this case I'd
recommend we focus on translating the Release Notes.

 3) A brief announcement to our mailing lists, including the 9000
subscribers of our announcement mailing list. Again, linking back to
 the Release Notes.

 4) Posts to Twitter, Google+, Facebook, etc. This is something where
everyone can help spread the news, by sharing, +1'ing, RT'ing,. etc.

 -Rob

 Hi,

My name is Ricardo Palomares and I'm part of the currently active team
of RLA-ES [1], the project to maintain a free spelling dictionary of
Spanish in different variants. It's has been a long time since our
last release 0.6, in April 2012. I remember having seen the dictionary
in OO.org extensions catalog, but I can't find it. Could it be that a
purge has been done to remove unowned/obsolete extensions?

We have the new 0.7 version available for downloading [2] and we were
told around a year ago that we should use this mailing list in
order to get OpenOffice.org Spanish builds to ship the dictionaries. I
hope our information is still good.

Since Santiago Bosio, the founder of RLA-ES, has been very busy in the
last year, any pointer to the right procedures for this kind of
 updates will be welcome.

Nothing wrong with the dictionary, of course, that's one of the missing

It seems *all* the addresses changed on the site upgrade and now it's a
small challenge to find them again. In fact, I started this thread after
someone from the Recursos Lingüísticos project said on l10n list he

It seems the identifier for the extension is now the extension title
