[dev] OpenOffice.org Celebrates Tenth Anniversary at OOoCon in Budapest
/The OpenOffice.org Community is turning ten years of age. Launching the celebration of a decade of open and free office productivity, the project's annual conference will take place in the city of Budapest from August 31 — September 3. Organized by the local community, supported by major sponsors and filled with life by a highly engaged, vivid community, the OpenOffice.org Conference (OOoCon) is the premier event for all those interested in OpenOffice.org development, OpenDocument technology and the future of free office software. Since OpenOffice.org was created in 2000, the community behind the software has shaped a new era of open and free office productivity and is responsible for the creation and adoption of open standards. With studies showing more than 20 percent market share, coupled with an increasing number of governments, enterprises and private end-users taking advantage of OpenOffice.org technology, this year's conference will not only be our annual gathering for developers, adopters, enthusiasts and evangelists, but also the start to well-earned celebrations in local communities around the world. At the event, attendees will find: * More than 100 speakers will present their thoughts and visions in four parallel sessions. * An ODF 1.2 Interop Demo. Hosted by OASIS, the international open standards consortium, the ODF 1.2 Interop will showcase applications processing ODF documents on the desktop, in the cloud and on mobile devices. * More than 80 presentations will show the variety of the community and highlight worldwide success stories. Our team has been working very hard to make this anniversary conference the best OOoCon ever, says Péter Szakál from Open SKM, the team lead for the Budapest organizational committee in charge of hosting the event. With the help of our sponsors, and with the support of not only the local community, but the worldwide project, we're looking forward to an extraordinary event in the capital of Hungary. Framed by many community events, we're confident that the OpenOffice.org Conference 2010 will be a memorable event for everyone. For 10 years, OpenOffice.org has powered millions of users around the world with an award-winning, easy-to-use office productivity suite, said Michael Bemmer, vice president of Oracle Office. At Oracle, we are proud to be the primary contributor to OpenOffice.org, as well as a Platinum sponsor of this year's OpenOffice.org conference and we eagerly look to passing yet more milestones. Today, OpenOffice.org is the major open source office suite and one of the largest open source projects worldwide with * over 43 million downloads of its current 3.2 version * more than 300 million downloads since the project's creation in 2000 * support for all major platforms * 10 years of community experience * more than 90 languages available This year's OpenOffice.org Conference takes place from August 31 — September 3, at the Central European University in Budapest, with the plenary session being held at the Hungarian Parliament. The event is organized by ODFA Hungary, a nonprofit organization, with support from sponsors IBM, Multiracio, Oracle and in joint cooperation with the worldwide OpenOffice.org community. Registration is open until the end of August, and all participants are encouraged to register online at http://www.ooocon.org/ More information: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoCon2010 FB events: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=134248523255484 http://www.facebook.com/#%21/event.php?eid=134248523255484/ signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

[dev] Docking windows and todos
Hexyl Chan írta: Hi Kami, Did you discuss the do-dos with Carsten? Carsten answer was: Hi KAMI, Unfortunately this is currently not possible. Fortunately OOo 3.1 contains many parts which are necessary to provide dockable windows via API. Some important parts are still missing and must implemented. Re: [dev] How to develop a new OOo application?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi! You can check what is easier. Start from scratch or use already available tools. Project management tools is somehow close to draw or even closer to calc (with many functions stripped). If you check Impress and Draw you will find it is a common module of two. So this was not the first time when we use already developed app as a base. KAMI Claus Agerskov írta: Hi OOo developers The OpenOffice.org Project Management Tool Subproject (OOPM) is near the phase where development is going to start. The goal is that OOPM is going to be a new OOo application like Calc, Writer, Impress, Draw and Base. Like Microsoft Project is a part of the Microsoft Office suite. But how would you start developing such an application? Totally from scratch? Using the code from one of the existing applications and remove/change all the parts which you can't reuse? Re: [dev] Internationalisation of gallery theme name
Hi! Francis Giraldeau írta: Hi, Thanks for the follow-up. I would suggest that as a new feature. Help is translated, formulas are, but custom gallery name aren't, and they should. You are right. The use case is to ship gallery packages. If we want to get translated theme names, then we have to ship one package per language (or generate theme files on the fly with correct names, but it's about the same), and only one language can be installed at a time. The usual way it to be able to install as many language as the user wants. Yes. I would like to discuss the feasability of that. Which module is affected by this feature request? All module, but the mainly you can check the graphics and sd module. Note: Currently, you can create language depended gallery themes by recompiling a part of OOo. I am providing galleries in my own builds this way. KAMI Thanks, Francis KAMI911 KAMI911 a écrit : There is no way to make gallery title elements depend on language. It has only one language. My OfficeMenuBar items can take advantage from this behaviour. They use these images ... but the OfficeToolBar items do not :-( Is it a bug ? - - Is there a posibility to deploy sc_userimages.png within extensions ? [...] here:http://www.chipx86.com/blog/?p=222 or if people knows about other cool tools for doing reviews ? Thank's, Martin, for bringing this up again. In Hamburg we do such (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Code_Reviews#Example:_Leightweight_Code_Reviews_within_OOo) reviews for more than three month now, and there occurred a few effects I like especially: - the Coding Standards (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Cpp_Coding_Standards) get really fast into the fingers, because we get in contact with them each week, - there appeared to be several things to be learned from the co-developers, regarding as well their programming skills in general, as their problem domain specifically, - I get to know parts of the Office code, I never saw before, which helps my understanding of the project as a whole. After the current experience we would highly encourage any developer in the OOo-community to try out such reviews, and even to make them a regular habit. Inspired by Joerg Jahnkes great page about regression tests (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Steps_towards_regular_automated_regression_testing), I set up a wiki page http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Steps_towards_regular_code_reviews to focus the activities towards code reviews. ok, we are talking here about two different aspects of code review, the educational and the approval one. Both are quite important but should treated in different ways. I think doing code review in the public with the help of collaboration tools (webex, skype/voip, http://cld.blog-city.com/netbeans_collaboration_project___collablets_and_codeaware_to.htm, collab.netbeans.org) could be a major step forward getting new developer into the project. Hello Kay! The original OOo works well on those machines. I really interested in universal OOo packages that utilize the latest innovations of OOo like GNOME VFS, Quick Starter... As I wrote I used Ubuntu 7.04 (my main machine) should I force older version of glibc/Xfree, or I have to build another build machine based on older distribs like Debain 3.1r6 (or 4?) or other? Are there detailed information about them most compatible versions? tools.openoffice.org? or at the wiki? So what is the best environment to build OOo for Linux? Thanks, KAMI Kay Ramme - Sun Germany - Hamburg írta: Jim, Kami, this error happens in case the to be used VCL plugin (KDE, GTK or plain X11) can not be loaded / instantiated. To break up the problem further, you may want to try to specify the to be used plugin explicitly in the environment: setenv SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN kde or setenv SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN gtk or setenv SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN gen At least gen should work always. I have created several galleries without AVOID_BURN_IN_FOR_GALLERY_THEME option. Are there any way to convert it in gallery. Or Should I read all of them with this option? Have we gota script that add files to gallery as integrated elements? gengal does not support this option. Thanks, KAMI Christian Lippka írta: Hi Kami, if you do not use AVOID_BURN_IN_FOR_GALLERY_THEME then all formating properties on the shape in the gallery are hard set. The disadvantage is that such shapes will not work any longer with styles as all formating properties are overridden at the shape itself. When creating gallery themes one should think about which formating properties must be set hard and which should be come from the styles. Therefore AVOID_BURN_IN_FOR_GALLERY_THEME is advised if you plan to share your theme with others. Regards, Christian KAMI wrote: Hi Christian! Re: [dev] Re: [installation-dev] Windows Installer patches and upgrades
Ingo Schmidt rta: It should be no problem, to change this number to a more useful versioning schema. We only have to guarantee, that it is increased for Major Upgrades. And it should be also simple to use the MsiFileHash table. It would be nice, if we could work together, to find a solution for usable OOo patches using Windows Installer techniques. Until now, I have only seen Windows Installer patches for OOo, that were created by commercial tooling. But here we need a process, that can create msp files automatical and reliable within this Perl packaging process. Greetings Ingo As I saw in InstallShield Developer and Professional they create patches from latest final binary installer and older installers (one or more)... So we might want to follow this way. We should look the size of update packages what is enough for us version by version updater or incremental updater (with all version's patches included)... I found this: MSIDIFF MSIDIFF can dump complete or compare two Windows Installer databases as well as patches and transforms, it installs shell extensions (right click on file) to simplify this but it can also be used from the command line. The output can also be fed back into the MAKEMSI tool which was also written by Dennis Bareis, allowing you to automate and changes you may have made using a table editing tool such as Orca. Re: [dev] Willing to Contribute
Jayaprakash Manikka írta: Dear Sir, I'm interested to contribute my programming skills to develop the OpenOffice. I've good skills in C, C++ and Java. I know VB though not well skilled. So please let me know what can I do for the OpenOffice Community. In OpenOffice.org projects there are many contribution areas. A good place to start is to look at the wiki: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page There is work for many kinds of skillset and commitment levels and many areas of interest. Of course if you want to contribute directly to OpenOffice.org Premium we can find out the way how can you work useful for us and ententainmenting to you Assuming you have a dev machine, suggest using Linux - OpenSuse 10.1 is excellent, free, and many of the helpful developers who hang out on IRC #go-oo can help you with it. Or try this: http://tools.openoffice.org/ (You can build Windows machine from here) Core development contributions would be in C/C++. Or you can use Python to add plug-in components and features. But many part of OpenOffice.org are in JAVA. For example some of wizards are java based, the database part of OOo also contains lot of java code. We can develop new wizards or improve the already available... Hacker's guide: http://www.go-oo.org/hackers-guide.html (go-oo is a fork of original OpenOffice.org) The best way to start is to hangout on IRC, setup the dev machine, download the source, build and use Openoffice.org and then pick a task or area. At any of the points above, feel free to ask for help. So what is your interest? Thank you in advance! Re: [dev] Adding a buddylist / Instant Mesenger to openoffice
Hi! Interesting talk Éric Bischoff írta: Le Vendredi 28 Juillet 2006 19:43, Thomas Müller a écrit : But we have all to agree on that, that we want to have this component. Personally I _do not_ agree to have an instant messenger integrated with OOo's core. And especially a perfect unknown software. And even more if written in Python. I think - the original idea - integrating IM like facility into OOo is good. Why? Because the created documents have to send to others. That is why documents created. There are several way to send it. You can put on fileservers. I thing this is the hard side from view of file managament (locking, management, etc.). Also you can send it via e-mail. Email is a important communication form. OOo supports this via file-send menu. This is good. It uses external program to do it. Using IM can substitue emailing and I think it is faster. We can provide send action for it (via add-on). Another level is adding it to the suite. I might enable higher level of interaction between OOo and IM application. Send or receive from ooo - on taskpad/bar like panel. And chat in ooo. Send the current modification instantly to other side. Diff files at two (or more?) IM users... We might have many idea to how and how much integrate im to ooo. I am stand for the integration (from just an external linkage to integral part of ooo)... We have to dicuss it well... But not sure if the cspace is the best... If you see one of the Another Office Company you might hear about Groove... So integration istant messanging (and more) functions is might not a close. Another theme is integrated e-mailing (i saw it time by time on maillists). I know we haven't enough resource but an integrated mail client with planning, resource, contact, time management is might make ooo more popular. I see the advantages of it. Of course it might need lot of resource to create something useful. Outlook is the fourth most requested app from OOo (after W, C, I)... So it might be in our long term todo list. Integrating or creating IM client may be nearly same useful - but it requires lot less resources... As a UNIX guy, I like applications to concentrate on what they do best. Then you assemble applications, like a building game. Otherwise you bloat applications. OOo is a desktop suite, it should not do email, IM, or video editing. I agree in video editing. But a well designed program not bloated (in term of speed and usability) integrating more functionality. Of course we have to ask our users what they are really need. And because of our limited resources we need to order well our tasks. There's a video game in Excel. Does that make sense ? Obviously not. There are however a few acceptable solutions : 1) If the IM guys want to write it as an add-on to OOo, why not. Their problem ;-). Yes :o) 2) Also, distributions are free to bundle OOo with whatever software they like, provided they think about license issues Yes :o) 3) If someone can prove there are some parts in writer, calc or impress that can benefit of the _integration_ of an IM, then we should be able to call any external IM program (the choice of which can be done by the user, with a default to the system one). But I would like to see a use case _before_. Paritally yes. We may need at least IM where the communication and coworking is stronger. An office application might need special services (see above)... Of course the spec must be open so no one retained to implement it in another im to maintain the higher level cooperation with ooo suite. Also, I have to say that writing answers and not getting reactions to them is particularly unpleasant and gives the impression to speak to deaf people. Hence the harsh tone. Thomas, Integrating something to OOo is never start to change end user pages on OOo site. You might create project you have to make you Im comaptible with OOo, integrate it, integrate into build system, localization then we need builds and careful testing. It takes time. It is not one hour work... So we need more work than you expected... I am sure... OOo is move slover than you think. There are several patch that makes smaller modifications than you want, but they ares still on hold... Have a nice day, Best regards, KAMI

Re: [dev] Mirroring OpenOffice.org Premium
Hi Gurus! Charles-H. Schulz írta: Hello all, (cutting the previous thread for the sake of clarity). I wish to appease this debate but weigh in it as well. :o) It is not a cruel debate :o) While it's true that OpenOffice.org Premium is a rather unfortunate name in a marketing sense (it really sounds like something you actually pay), The Premium word is something better in my world ... But I am open for any cool name suggestion... and while I certainly see the advantages of bundling OOo with extra fonts and templates me too and other users too , I wonder what you do concerning the promotion of the actual OpenOffice.org software in Hungary. The promotion is coordinated by FSF.hu Foundation. They for to spread free softwares in Hungary including OpenOffice.org. I try to do my best and I communicate with the Hungarian media about OpenOffice.org. There is not to much progression here. We haven't got money to advertise our free world in wide, but lots of media get informed about OpenOffice.org related news. All of IT related mags release our news, the suite is in the printed medias' DVD/CD set. Over the IT mags we haven't too big name. They are not interested in... With the Get legal campaign I would like to create some posters to make Openoffice.org more known. Of course I will discuss it with András Tímár (our lead)... That's all... Please take no offense in this. Oh, I am not :o) We just talking about - in my opinion - something cool :o) But it's really a question I would like to ask. By stressing on the Premium rather than on OpenOffice.org itself, I don't want to hurt the image of OpenOffice.org via OpenOffice.org Premium. Instead of this we prefer OpenOffice.org and we provide additional link to download OpenOffice.org Premium... The all hu.openoffice.org is about Openoffice.org not from Premium... Evry communication tals about OpenOffice.org not from Premium... So we (or I) do not harm OOo downloads moreover we can collect more user for OpenOffice.org with Premium... you may end up harming the actual software's image more than anything else. It's of course a discussion you should have inside the Hungarian-speaking OOo community. And by the way, how does all this fit in the overall community works of the HU community? Contributors have created Slackware, UHU (Hungarian Linux variant), Gentoo packages for Premium, the users like the idea of bundled extras... The our community members were sceptic about success but the voice of people was quite demonstarative. It is high time to did same with you :o) What more can we do? Yes, we can create more language versions (en-US and de for 2.0.3) with the help of OOo community and try to push it into the main branch (with the help of OOo community) How do you sort out the licensing issues? I try to take over the licence issues. I am not sure it is a real problem concernind OpenOffice.org. I have agreement from aouthors to use it Openoffice.org freely... I certainly appreciate your dissemination work, but maybe a better mutual understanding should be necessary here. Right :o) Best Regards, Charles-H. Ciao! Jürgen Schmidt írta: Hi Kami, KAMI wrote: Dear Jürgen! Jürgen Schmidt írta: Hi Kami, why did you create an own installation set I have created my own installation set because: - it is funny ;o) great to here - it makes OpenOffice.org more attractive compared to other (Commercial) suites. Other suites has more complete clipart, temlate, font colletion in the installer... (In case of OpenOffice.org Premium ~2400 clipart, ~80 impress background, ~60 temlpates, ~90 fonts, 40 fontwork gallery element (already integrated), Bitstream vera replaced by Deja Vu (integration on the way)... I think OpenOffice.org Premium extras looks more shiny than original... - all-in-one solution makes the life easier (You do not have to download templates, fonts, clipart, fontwork gallery, documentation, OOo related materials, UNO components (LaTeX filter)) separetly, the install it.You get all thing via one click... Ideal way for beginners... - I enjoyed the work with your heplful collegues Ingo and Kai. perfect, it seems that you like the work with the community and you obviously has done a good job with all the new stuff for your premium OO.org. I feel same :o) But I know We need to do more. The current objective of this project to be the part of main OpenOffice.org, so everybody can use our extras. I did and will do everything to make it happen as soon as possible. Localization support, apply of OpenOffice.org desing rules on OOo Premium... I know we need contributors, whom help out us with particular language translation, templates, documentums and why didn't you provide your template collection to the OO.org project directly. As far as I know the English and German templates are available via local language teams' homepage. Hungarian templates are available at hu.openoffice.org. OpenOffice Premium source (patcset for vanilla OOo) is available here: ftp://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/Source_mod/ ok, i don't know the details exactly how the template stuff is organized. But i think that there should be one place for all languages. I do agree... One place with a set of templates, impress backgrounds ... where the community has agreed that they should become the default in an official OpenOffice.org distro. I still agree... No differentiation between OpenOffice.org and a OpenOffice.org Premium or others. I do not want to differ OpenOffic.org and OpenOffice.org Premium. I wopuld very happy if we decide to integrate OpenOffice.org Premium into OpenOffice.org project... I did steps to this direction... After we created Premium, we compiled binaries for linux and windows... Then shown it to the community. The Hungarian users really liked this idea (ide of integrated Premium versions), so we created international version - firstly en-US - and I hope we will have De version by the 2.0.3's time. Make it easy for our end users -- one OpenOffice.org -- no further decision which distro of OpenOffice would be the best for me. Ok there are always reasons for having commercial products based on OpenOffice.org. I mean especially support and service issues for companies which are often bind to a commercial product and which from my point of view is ok. But i personally as private user of OpenOffice.org wouldn't really choose between different OpenOffice.org versions. So we didn't hide our work. What do you think where should we promote our templates? That would have the benefit that the translation mechanisms on OO.org can be used Translatig is not affecting templates just the additional installation parts, galleries, etc. Templates are created one by one for every language... mmh, i think often the idea and structure of a template is important I agree - I think the origanl template stucture is good for start... and if you have some kind of master template in English I mainly work on Hungarian templates, of course one day I might start to create also English templates. But for this I have top learn English at first. for example other user can translate the template to other languages as well but reusing the original idea, structure, macros, ... Yes! More complex documents must be more reusable. OOo community might start a document localization project to make more templates/macro based documents, utilities available for more and more languages. and all OO.org versions would benefit of a better or bigger template collection and better or more impress schemes. Of course everybody benefit from out collection because everybody can use the extras (as you saw they are available for public), but Premium - from my viewpoint - is one (or two) step forward because it integrates these extras into OpenOffice.org perfectly... fine, and you can make the seconds step (installing OO.org Premium) obsolete by integrating it in the offical OpenOffice.org build I have a good news for you! I already did taht step :o) I made it OpenOffice.org compatible as your
