Well, to be honest, I have no idea. I would say that those who want the new
Yubikey UI in will have to package the required SDKs. (They could also be
useful for other applications, e.g., the "Every Door" OpenStreetMap POI
editor.) Otherwise, I would suggest just keeping shipping the legacy stuff
that is already packaged.

It is sad that more and more upstreams, even those that were previously
using standard GNU/Linux programming languages and toolkits, are now using
strange programming languages and toolkits that are a pain to package. (Go,
Rust, Dart, etc., and toolkits such as Flutter that build on those.) I miss
the times where everything was in C or in some cases (mostly just Qt and
KDE) C++.

webkitgtk6.0 soname bump season

2023-01-19 Thread Michael Catanzaro

Hi,

The webkitgtk6.0 package (for GTK 4, not GTK 3) will be doing several
soname bumps over the next two months in preparation for stabilizing
the GTK 4 API. I won't announce individual bumps since they will be
frequent. I will handle rebuilds of the impacted packages:
gnome-initial-setup, gnome-builder, evolution-data-server, and
epiphany. (If I've missed anything, please yell.)

These soname bumps will happen in both rawhide and also in F38 once it
is branched.

Sometime soon, hopefully in February but maybe early March, the API/ABI
will become stable, as it already is for GTK 3, and the fun will then
be over. Hopefully.

Michael

have an initial meeting planned for Monday the 23rd as outlined in:

Just a reminder that we are hoping to have an initial meeting Jan 23 at 4pm
UTC (9am Pacific, 11am ET, 5pm CET). We picked 11 ET as an attempt to span
the timezones from Europe and NA. I've not seen any yes/no in terms of the
time working so we'll go ahead with the proposed time. Here as link for a
google meet that we can use for the first meeting:
meet.google.com/vch-jjne-vqt The proposed initial agenda is: -
Communication channels - Mailing list - Slack/IRC/etc ? - Pagure/Wiki -
Capturing existing work/initiatives - Known Gaps

They maintain package python-license-expression, which is outdated and several new version has been released in past
3 years.

There is upstream monitoring bug

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1972010

With no update since June 2021. I pinged there for update on December 2022. I

No update since then.

I've noticed she tried to update the package 3 months ago and bailed out:

Have you considered offering help by sending a pull request with the update?

3 months is not that long for a volunteer contributor, considering this was around the holiday as well. I see some
activity on GitHub so I don't think she's completely gone, perhaps just busy... ?

BTW in the spirit of transparency: I'm the one who sponsored Carmen Bianca into

It looks like there are currently ~ 13 packages that currently require

likely is it that "fedora-comps" would accept a PR that narrows the

The idea is that an application will put a dep on the

Is someone working on packaging the Dart and Flutter SDK
(and all their dependencies, which I had had this vague
recollection also required gradle, and, well, gradle is its
own issue) for Fedora in that F39/F40 time frame so that they
can be used to build apps such as the new yubikey manager?

I must have entirely missed that that effort was ongoing as the
last discussion about Dart that I recall was years ago, and
it was more of a wish rather than a resourced effort.

Just when it looked like they had gotten Yubioath-desktop to work
properly, it disappears. It's so tiresome to have rugs pulled like this
all the time. I wish I had a way to know which programs will continue
to work, so I can rely on them.

I suppose I'll try Ykocli and see if that's usable.

And that's such a fancy modern Javascript program that it can't even be
scrolled in a browser with a stable user interface. Wonderful.

"Reminding" is another term for nagging. Fedora should
not be a nag when there may be reasons for the choices
(for example, while one can claim that one should not be
running obsolete system versions, sometimes there are
"reasons", and that system may even be being supported
through an extended support contract). Packager
workflow can be complicated, and we need to respect
that the many volunteers that contribute to Fedora may
have needs outside of the pure Fedora ecosystem.

Adding such a check to rpmlint when a packager does
their update checks, on the other hand, might be a
reasonable approach, as packagers can decide whether
to remove the code fragments, to override that check in
the rpmlint configuration, or just ignore the suggestion,
as they see fit.

As for my personal practice, I tend to remove such old
code when I decide to review the entire spec file (i.e.
review/modernize it for current packaging guidelines
typically with a major new version of the software, or
I have just adopted an orphaned package that I need),
or the spaghetti if/elses become confusing even to myself,
and it needs cleaning, or when I am trying to avoid
doing something else (sometimes it seems like cleanup
should be quick and easy (sometimes it is neither)
which I think I can actually accomplish right now).
I rarely go looking for new things to add to my
infinitely long TODO list just because I could add it.

Sometimes yes. I have seen people still using RHEL 5 and building packages for

It is not needed to be present in Fedora's dist-git but you usually do not know what is the maintainer workflow. You may
complicate his life over the purity of Fedora's dist-git.

The maintainer sees the conditional every time they update the spec.
They can remove it whenever it's convenient to them. There's no need to
pester people about such non-urgent maintenance. It's not like
something will break if the conditional isn't removed in time.

First, there's no benefit to removal. Nothing is harmed by having
something that always evaluates like `#if 0` unless it seriously impacts
readability. Spec file "hygiene" is not inherently good (or inherently
bad) beyond that.

A check or reminder is another nag notification. We don't need more of

Only if they're purely for Fedora. In many examples you also see a rhel
conditional and that could be used for EPEL. A good number of packagers
like to use the same spec since it reduces maintenance burden on
updates. So in that case the mentioned RHEL/EPEL version should also be
EOL.

I agree.
I'd just add that the same may apply to the %{rhel} macros too - Is
there any need to check for *EOLed* RHEL releases?

That's what I also suggested.

In Fedora we can reasonably say we mostly care about EPEL and if that
goes EOL then it's actually removed from the mirrors.

In theory people could keep the spec compatible so users can manually
rebuild for older release, even if Fedora infrastructure doesn't. Hence
why I suggested SHOULD rather than MUST.

I'm not sure this is great. For example, it may introduce revbumps,
which can cause a package rebuild but in the resulting RPM these should
make no difference (otherwise they wouldn't be safe).

To me the right time is to on version bump of a package where you're
already making changes anyway.

I don't see a need to make a bump and build for every change, only for
changes that are expected to be built.
There are mass rebuilds anyway, so it will be bumped and built eventually.

I'm used that for each release there is also a build. My assumption was
that rpmautospec would create a release, but if it's skipped then my
objection would be gone.

To be clear, I'd actually like to see robots sending in pull requests.
Many version bumps are actually trivial and the-new-hotness could send a
pull request. In a similar way I can see some sort of nanny cleaning up
specs in an automated fashion doing the same. For example, conversion to
SPDX license tags feels like a good candidate (if there's no ambiguity).

If this is automated then it should be easy to opt-out on a repository
basis.

On Debian there is lintian-brush[1] which has a similar objective.

Then why are we now rushing to use that frame pointer hack on F38 (and
rebuilding the entire distro with it right now), instead of waiting one
release or two for the proper solution?

The GCC defaults are completely useless. -O0, almost no warnings, etc.

I agree.
I'd just add that the same may apply to the %{rhel} macros too - Is
there any need to check for *EOLed* RHEL releases?

I don't see a need to make a bump and build for every change, only for
changes that are expected to be built.
There are mass rebuilds anyway, so it will be bumped and built eventually.

Only if they're purely for Fedora. In many examples you also see a rhel

Yes, RFC 2119 SHOULD sense.

Would you see a value in e.g. some kind of a robot reminding

I'm not sure this is great. For example, it may introduce revbumps,

I agree. I usually keep them around for a couple of releases especially
when it has to do with preserving an upgrade path (support f-2) or for
more recent EOL'd releases if someone wants to manually keep a package
going for a while.

But I see no purpose in keeping around conditionals for anything past 4
releases ago and I see them sometimes when rebuilding packages. I recently
saw one for Fedora 24...

For the packages I (co)maintain, I see no value in keeping it. Maybe
somebody has a reason for keeping it in their specs, but I can't see
any value in it.

Yes, it makes it easier for others to open the spec file and quickly
understand what it's doing.

SPECfiles - conditionals with EOLed Fedora releases - any value in keeping them ?

2023-01-19 Thread Michal Schorm
Hello,
While playing around with Sourcegraph, which indexed all Fedora
package repositories, I was able to craft a query listing all '%if'
conditionals referencing Fedora releases that reached EOL.

https://sourcegraph.com/search?q=context:global+repo:%5Esrc%5C.fedoraproject%5C.org/rpms+file:.spec+%28%25if.*%25%7B%5C%3Ffedora%7D.*%5B%3C%3D%3E%5D.*%29%28%5B12%5D%5B0-9%5D%7C%5B3%5D%5B012345%5D.*%29+count:all=regexp=yes=0=group

I don't believe such conditions have any value and I think we can
remove them right away.
I think the removal shouldn't affect neither Fedora nor derived
operating systems.

If removed, they will be preserved in the git history anyway, for
anyone seeking historical code.

In some cases the conditionals hold patches that could be removed with them:

https://sourcegraph.com/search?q=context:global+repo:%5Esrc%5C.fedoraproject%5C.org/rpms+file:.spec+%28%25if.*%25%7B%5C%3Ffedora%7D.*%5B%3C%5D.*%29%28%5B12%5D%5B0-9%5D%7C%5B3%5D%5B0123456%5D.*%5Cn%2B%29%28.*%5Cn%3F%29%28%25patch.*%29+count:all=regexp=yes=0=group

--

Do you agree it would be safe to remove such conditionals and the code
they hold ?

Do you agree that removing obsolete code such as this brings value to
the package codebase ?

Would you see a value in e.g. some kind of a robot reminding
maintainers of such obsolete code? (e.g. new RPMinspect or ZUUL CI
check)

python-xrst is a wrapper for the sphinx documentation tool; see

I am fluent in C++ and Python and would be willing to swap an review for a
package with source in one of these languages.

Re: Automation of Fedora SCM requests

2023-01-19 Thread Michal Konecny
I would say that the current way is OK, the bot asks fedora-scm-requests
admins to validate the requests, because it is marked as exception.
After being validated it gets created.

Or if there should be an exception for Rust packages, we can add name
validation and if the name of the package is rust something, we can skip
the validation process. But this unfortunately let people create any
repository with name rust with exception set to true without any
validation and I'm not sure if we want this.

The solution from kevin that the fedpkg request will actually say that
it's a compat request and provides name of the previous package, it
could be validated by bot itself and automated. Right now the bot
doesn't really know if this is a compat package or not, the request
doesn't have that info.

Where can I direct feature requests? Per
https://pagure.io/releng/fedora-scm-requests/issue/50507 seems like
requesting repos with exceptions (e.g. for Rust compat packages) is
currently not automated.

I'm not sure how we can automate this.

I mean I guess we could just check that the requestor is a packager and
let them create any package name they wish? Or is there some programic
way we can tell it's a compat package and that its correctly named?

Perhaps we could extend fedpkg to ask for and provide more info to the
processing ticket? like name of orig package (check that it exists, etc)
and that the new compat package has a name thats based on it?

Thoughts?

Hi Michel,

you can file feature requests in

Where can I direct feature requests? Per

requesting repos with exceptions (e.g. for Rust compat packages) is
currently not automated.

just a minor follow-up: mutter has that feature merged now for GNOME 43
[1] so a once-off gsettings call should do the trick there:

$ gsettings set org.gnome.mutter.wayland xwayland-allow-byte-swapped-clients
true

The libvirt packaging is already modular. The 'libvirt-daemon-driver-storage'
package is intended to bring in /all/ storage backends libvirt supports. To
avoid that, it is possible to depend on 'libvirt-daemon-drive-storage-core'
instead which pulls in only storage backends which have no extra deps.
Removing or weakening the dep on libvirt-daemon-driver-storage-iscsi from
libvirt-daemon-driver-storage, would undermine the point of this wrapper
package which is intended to provide apps with all storage features, so
this is not something we would like to do.

2023-01-19 Thread Artur Frenszek-Iwicki
So I'm sure this question has been asked during previous Mass Rebuilds,
but I can't find the answer in the heaps of messages in my mailbox,
so I'll ask again: if my package failed to build during the Mass Rebuild
and I know how to fix it - I don't have to wait for the rebuilt to end,
right? I can just go ahead, push the changes to dist-git and trigger a build.

So yeah, this is a mess, indeed.

We have been thinking in systemd if we shouldn't tighten the
requirements a bit and dictate that in future /var/ has to be mounted
at the moment of the initrd → host transition. That would make the
problem go away. We currently require that the root fs and /usr/ are
already mounted during the transition. It's not *that* much more
to require /var/, too.

But I guess that is more a long term thing.

What you could do is split up the problem: have iscsi-starter.service
or so, that is separate from the iscsi.service main service. The
former's job would be to scan if iscsi volumes are configured. If it
finds configured ones, it would then issue "systemctl start --no-block
iscsi.service" to enqueue a start job for the real thing.

Then, the starter unit would not be ordered after the wait-online
service, but the real iscsi one would be.

Finally, iscsi.service's [Install] section would not carry any
WantedBy= lines or so, i.e. would not hook itself into anything if
enabled. Instead it would only carry Also=iscsi-starter.service there,
which would basically "redirect" enablement to the starter
service. And the starter service would then do
WantedBy=sysinit.target to hook itself into the early boot.

Both services would use DefaultDependencies=no, and the starter
service would use RequiresMountsFor=/var/lib/iscsi/nodes so that it
waits exactly until its /var/ dir is up, but not more.

The starter service could probably look roughly like this btw:

[Unit]
DefaultDependencies=no
Before=sysinit.target iscsi.service
RequiresMountsFor=/var/lib/iscsi/nodes
ConditionDirectoryNotEmpty=/var/lib/iscsi/nodes

[Service]
Type=oneshot
RemainAfterExit=true
ExecStart=/usr/bin/systemctl start --no-block --job-mode=fail iscsi.service
