Re: [IxDA Discuss] Will's worst site

2008-06-28 Thread Alexander Baxevanis
I'm curious how many people will actually land on this page.

I'd think that lots of people nowadays would just type 'bmw' on
Google, and from the UK version of Google this leads me to the UK
version of the BMW website. And if you're looking for a specific car
and you type something like 'bmw x5' you will land on the main page
for that car.

IP-based geolocation is great when it works, and crap when it doesn't,
i.e. for those who access the net through some corporate firewall
which is located in a different country. When I was working for
Motorola in the UK, I was regularly getting redirected through some
proxy in Germany (!) and I got various websites thinking I'm German. I
friend of mine working for Nokia in the UK regularly gets Finnish
versions of websites, for the same reason.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can't tweak this page a bit to allow
for easier country selection. I particularly like what SonyEricsson
has done at:

[IxDA Discuss] FW: (Job Offered) Interaction Designer - Seattle, WA (Contract)

2008-06-28 Thread Andrea Steurer
Are you a User Experience Designer looking for a company to grow with?
Big Fish has an amazing opportunity with a client in Seattle who is
looking for a long term fit!

Do you have experience in software interaction design? Just doing the
visuals for websites won't do it for this company - but if you are into
creating an amazing user experience for a variety of programs from
software to consumer hardware products, enterprise business software and
even games, this is the role for you. We are looking for professionals
who can take ambiguous ideas and make them a reality. You should also be
able to work well within a team environment but also be able to work
independently and be self directed.

Main responsibilities
* Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to define user interaction
and workflow models for software product features.
* Work with user researchers to turn observational and other data into
creative solutions.
* Be able to translate complex information and interaction into simple
solutions.
* Build Flash, Director, HTML, or After effects prototypes
* Development of user experience guidelines, and UI specification
documentation.
* Develop navigational hierarchies and effectively visualize key
concepts of site structure and user pathways.
* Create storyboards and plan activity scenarios, flow and sequences.
Qualifications:
* BA or MA in Visual Communication, Product Design, Industrial design or
equivalent.
* An online design portfolio showing strong creative skills, ability to
generate solid design ideas, and thorough understanding of good design
process.
* Able to accomplish objectives and possess proactive and strategic
problem-solving skills.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Director,
and HTML/Web authoring, In-design or equivalent.
Please apply with us online and include the link to your online
portfolio

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IA of IDEA 2008

2008-06-28 Thread Russ Unger
Thanks for bringing up the issues that are being seen with the IDEA
website. I can assure you the intent was not deceptive. After taking
a closer look, I can appreciate what is being called out. I think it
has been an oversight--this is the first feedback that I've seen
about it, and I am glad to see it pointed out so that we can evaluate
and hopefully improve upon it.

I can also say that many conferences do not have finalized programs
until very close to the conference date--if I recall correctly, the
IA Summit did not have a full program until a few weeks prior, and An
Event Apart in Chicago (1 week after IDEA) won't be announcing their
list until mid-July.

Perhaps the Program aspect should be removed or more information
should be provided as to when that will be available in the
right-hand column to hopefully help alleviate confusion.

The same design template has been used for the previous 2 years, and
as the date got closer, we published the program in the right column
of that page.

Thanks again for bringing these issues to light. I appreciate that
attention has been brought to this so we can do a better job; IDEA is
a pretty young conference and we definitely want to keep
improving.

Perhaps this is the part where the excuse comes in, but as with
many organizations, we are relying upon volunteers who have other
responsibilities. I'm truly sorry that the oversight and/or
confusion would cause anyone to mark us off of their list as
conferences to attend.

I think the dialog is great and welcome anything else that I can pass
along to the team to work toward improving.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] unique search result interfaces

2008-06-28 Thread Alla Zollers
Erin - that is a very interesting finding because I would have thought
that the map view would have been better as well. Real estate = maps,
makes sense to me!! :)

The reason I asked my questions is because I am designing a
comparison site and was wondering if it might be better to present
results vertically side by side rather than in a list format. I have
also designed 3 different variations: a list view, a vertical
compare, and one inspired by the viewzi interface (thank you for that
pointer!).

My next step is to conduct some testing and see what users think. I
am itching with curiosity. I will report back here when I have some
results.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Great Online Banking Experiences?

2008-06-28 Thread Jeremy White
Yes, Chase is pretty good. As soon as I log in, all my accounts are
neatly listed. It's sometimes all I need to do. Plus, their variety
of email and SMS alerts are very useful.

Even more, I love ING Direct. Clean and simple. Putting your PIN in
is nice. Click the numbers or type the letters randomly associated
with the numbers (so someone will have a harder time seeing you type
your PIN).

Speaking of Chase, I love their ATMs. No need to go to any menus, as
it remembers my preferred amount to withdraw. I just type in my PIN
and push quick cash. I just hate waiting for it to spit out my card.
My local bank's ATM has finger print scanning, so I don't even need
my card. If Chase had that, it would be fantastic.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Badges? We don't need no steenkin' badges.

2008-06-28 Thread Spencer Nowak
I agree that Grab the badge is an insufficient call to action.
However, replacing that with a different phrase with the same general
idea will leave you no better off.

Instead, since the site is already issue-centric, tell the potential
badge-grabber what they will accomplish by getting the badge. Users
don't go to a Save the Whales website looking for a badge for
their site, they go because they want to help save the whales.
Something like Have a website? Help us raise whale awareness!
will attract people who aren't familiar with the idea of badges
and make it clear that by getting the badge they will be doing
something for the cause they support.

People go to campaign sites to find out more about the cause or to
try to contribute (if they have already been won over). Telling them
to get something implies that they will gain - go to the grocery
store to get food, to Starbuck's to grab a coffee, work in order to
get paid - but they have come intent on giving. So offer them a way
to give. Tell them what they have to power to accomplish, and make
sure they know that whatever they do will be valuable to and valued
by the cause.
