Re: [IxDA Discuss] Bill Buxton just might be my design management hero

2009-05-03 Thread Sara Summers
This part really stood out to me:
...in terms of the nature of the products that they produce,
building such literacy is a very real and useful step in helping
combat that particular affliction. Designers need technological
literacy, too, and both need an equal dose of business acumen.
Without this, none of us has any right to complain about not being
understood by those in other disciplines. We all need to be able to
handle multiple directions.

The ever evolving ambiguity of the tech field, industry or discipline
specific lingo, and the miscommunication of business and/or design
strategy can all produce the symptoms Buxton speaks of. I think being
aware and then acting to learn from your team and teach your area of
expertise is critical. Formalizing it is even better, have a learning
session, 5 minute presentations and make it fun.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] New Site: Feedback?

2009-05-03 Thread ambrin
I am giving feedback based on usability and not the visual design
aspect. Here are a few things I noticed.

1) An ambiguous link (!8kRPM) above the bigwheel.net that when
clicked opens a new tab and takes me to a whole another site.

2) Majority of the content is loading on the far right of the screen
and this causes me to scroll horizontally. (see note below)

3) When I click on Design (i.e.
http://www.bigwheel.net/portfolio/notdesign09.html) it took me over 5
mins to figure our how to get back home. I used the back button in
my browser till I figured out there is a faint link running off the
page on the left side. The link isn't visible.

BTW the res on my laptop is 1024x768 and this site is obviously not
designed for 36% -- based on w3schools browser stats. It looks fine
on my other monitors.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

Hope that helps!
Ambrin

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Is e-commerce design dead?

2009-05-03 Thread amy
Hi Dave. From what I've seen, the disciplines of marketing and
interaction design are often unnecessarily (and unwisely) siloed and
segmented. There are a lot of great sources of information for the
topics you seek. One of my favorites is FutureNow's marketing
optimization blog: http://www.grokdotcom.com/

Brian Eisenberg is very smart about merchandising and
personalization. Marketers are more likely to use the term
conversion than user experience, but the goals, process, and
outcomes are pretty synonymous.

I hope that is helpful!

In response to Can't be done you might offer a work session where
together you design how it can be done and also work out an estimate
of how much work/time it would take to build it.

[IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] IxDA Austin // Tues, May 19 // Just Show Me a Freaking Picture

2009-05-03 Thread Tori Breitling
To “think visually” is to transform complex, text-based knowledge or verbal
language into engaging and memorable visuals so the information can be
better represented, understood and remembered.Visual thinking is relevant
today because the density of information we deal with is the equivalent of
being soaked with a firehose of data - and it’s not showing any signs of
slowing.

Unfortunately, research indicates that when our brains find themselves in
situations of great complexity, they start to shut down. It's like being
caught in a gigantic hairball. And therein lies the utility of using simple
pictures to untangle the mess.

Join Sunni in this visual thinking session to get a basic overview of what
visual thinking is, why it matters, and how anyone can do it. And why,
really, it's kind of heinous if you don't at least try.

The event is free of charge and open to all interested parties.
Our fabulous host for this is event is Vignette, who will be supplying pizza
and sodas.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Technical Limitation Arguements

2009-05-03 Thread Cyrus Karbassiyoon
Hi Elle,

I think what may help you is focusing on getting your developers to
achieve empathy for your users.

One of the best ways to do this is to involve them with your
usability testing. Watching four or five people painfully struggle
through a user test is extremely motivational to anyone watching:
developers/managers/designers/etc

Otherwise, a developer without empathy may not be able to rationalize
a difficult technical hurdle if they think the product is fine.

[IxDA Discuss] Black background interfaces...

2009-05-03 Thread gavin burke|FAW

Hi,

Black as the background colour for an interface is sometimes used in
mission critical UIs, such as medical monitoring systems and trading
software.

Can people recommend some research on the use of black in this type of
context and also post links if you have them of example interfaces.

Thanks!
Gavin.
