Re: [IxDA Discuss] Starting a career in IxD, UX, IA

2009-12-09 Thread Michael Wong
Hi,

with a background in marketing and sales, I am also finding it hard
to enter the field of UX. My goal is to become an usability analyst;
I am also finding it difficult to enter the field without prior
experience in development. However, I've started working towards a
certificate in Information Design.

For a course project, I would like to conduct an usability test on
either a website or a business application software. Please drop me a
line if you know someone.

Thanks,
Michael

[IxDA Discuss] [Job] Software Tutorial Video Production, McGraw-Hill NYC, Contract

2009-12-09 Thread Neil Kahn
Our UX team is looking for someone to create short tutorial videos for
a growing roster of online applications that we are developing. We
have already built a small library of these and are looking for
someone who can match our established conventions. Unfortunately, the
contractor who has been working with us up to this point (and doing a
great job) is unable to continue.

As our existing videos were created with ScreenFlow, we would very
much prefer to continue with this package.

You can see examples of our videos here:

http://mpss.mhhe.com/products-connect.php

We do most of the scripting and storyboarding in-house but require
someone to do the actual production work. Production would begin as
soon as possible. We tend to produce about five videos per month
(each several minutes long) and are looking to establish an ongoing
relationship with someone who can meet this need. If we like your
work, that could be you!

If you are skilled with ScreenFlow, please contact us with some of
your credentials. You MUST have prior experience creating tutorials
of this type and have samples of your work to show.

[IxDA Discuss] Seeking 2x2 diagram featuring iPhone app

2009-12-09 Thread Suzanne Ginsburg
Hello IXDA folks,

I'm looking for an example of a 2x2 diagram that features an iPhone
app. For those of you unfamiliar with 2x2 diagrams, they are often
used to to illustrate the competitive landscape and identify high
level opportunities. As indicated by the name, these diagrams focus
on two key criteria, which will vary depending on the domain and app.
There's a nice example in these slides:

See slide #4
http://www.slideshare.net/ladylexy/foodspotting-iphonedevcamp3-1812980

The diagram will be used in the competitive analysis section of an
upcoming book on iPhone app design (Addison-Wesley, June 2010). The
diagram author will be given credit as well as a copy of the book.
Something visually appealing with recognizable brands would be most
desirable.

Please contact me directly if you have an example to share. In case
it wasn't clear, I'm the author of the book.

Thanks!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] When to launch an asset download

2009-12-09 Thread Amy Silvers
I agree with Stephen. I don't know that you'll find much
documentation on this, but you should be able to find countless
examples in the wild of a confirmation page that says something like
"Thank you. Your whitepaper is being downloaded. If your download
did not start automatically, try this link."

Re: [IxDA Discuss] When to launch an asset download

2009-12-09 Thread Stephen Holmes
Expectation by the user is that they will receive a White Paper if
they provide their own details. If they have to press another button,
that is annoying. If they see a button that suggests more steps that
can be a stopper as the User may think there are more hoops to jump
through. Exit User; lost conversion.

I can't see why submitting a form and allowing download is NOT
conversion. It will be tracked in the logs anyway. Apart from showing
that they REALLY want the White Paper by clicking again on another
button I don't see the benefit. The odds of somebody going to the
trouble of filling in details and then NOT clicking on a button to
download the White Paper I would say are slim. Make download
automatic and keep the process as painless as possible.

However you should still have a button to download the White Paper on
the Thank-you page IF the download does not commence in a reasonable
time or is interrupted. And you should also push other White Papers
that may be of interest to the User on the thank-you page as well
that the User can download directly. The User has committed their
information you, so give them a few extra golden nuggets is always a
good customer building thing.

[IxDA Discuss] When to launch an asset download

2009-12-09 Thread jennifer
We have these "demand generation" pages that provide a summary of a
file (e.g., a white paper) which is only available after the user has
filled in a form and clicked the submit button, (e.g., "Get
whitepaper").

The question is:

Does the file download automatically happen when that button is
clicked *while* redirecting the user to a confirmation/thank you
page...

OR

Does the user see a confirmation/thank you page from which they then
need to click another link or button to download the file?

(Files will most often be PDFs. I've yet to see anything
different.)

The goal of the stakeholder is to get as much conversion as possible,
and they maintain that the download should *not* start automatically
due to their ability to track conversion.
(Which, is usually just them getting the form information.)

Now, I'm going to suggest that if we must have the user launch the
download from another page that we change the language of the form
button to say something more like "Continue" which implies another
step.

Ideas? We're looking to test things.

It would be good if there is any documentation on these types of
things, though I know it's rather specific. (I hope to get some
testing on my own for this.)

-Jennifer

[IxDA Discuss] Impossible data entry control

2009-12-09 Thread rnhatch
In early interaction design sessions, my business partners are asking
for the following: I don't believe it exists.

1. Web Page with simple template allowing data entry.
2. Data must be able to be "pasted" in from other sources (most
likely from a spreadsheet)
3. Data will be variable (1 - N rows)
4. Data format will need to be validated on submission. (Two columns
of data will be allowed, one an identifier and the second a currency
amount)

I'm thinking of GDocs spreadsheet type functionality - but am not
aware of that type of control being commonly available. Any thoughts?

I'm proposing an alternate interaction - which is simply to upload
the file and validate there, but they are stuck on this template
model...

[IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] IxDA Shanghai presents \"Selling UX in Organizations\" with Daniel Szuc: DECEMBER 11TH, 2009, 6:30PM

2009-12-09 Thread Itamar Medeiros
At some point in your career, you’ll be called upon to sell UX to
someone in your organization. You’ve probably already done it.
Perhaps you’ll need to justify what you do in an organization or
industry that’s just beginning to adopt UX methods or sell UX to
secure your position within an organization or get future projects.
So, what do you need to know to help you sell UX? What challenges
might you face? In this talk, Daniel Szuc will:

1. Examine what works and what does not work well when selling UX
within an organization;

2. identify barriers you might encounter to the adoption of UX
methods in your organization;

3. Discuss how to package and present UX to stakeholders.

Leah,

IxDA has a mentoring program. Although I don't know all the details (I know
I should... but haven't had the time to get involved), I'd suggest going to
the ixda.org site and searching for this. There's a ton of great people
here. Also, any local chapter should have events that I'd recommend going
to. You can learn a lot just from talking with folks and who knows, maybe
someone will be willing to be a mentor.

Cheers!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Starting a career in IxD, UX, IA

2009-12-09 Thread Matthew Nish-Lapidus
It's true that there are more visual design and front-end dev entry
level jobs... but, you might want to consider a different approach to
getting your first IxD/UX job.

Startups are a great place to get in at the ground level, if there
are any in your area that need UX help approach them and sell them on
your skills.

These kinds of jobs are often never advertised... you could pick some
places you'd like to work and try to make lunch or coffee
appointments with people there, preferable people that have hiring
power. Show them how passionate you are, and how you understand
their business, show them that your skills could benefit their
business. If you approach them in a "hey, i'd love to chat" way,
rather than a "are you hiring?" way, you'll probably get to talk
to people that you'd otherwise have a hard time reaching.

Good luck! It's a great career once you get going.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and knowledge! I have been
freelancing a lot of visual design/front end development projects in
the last couple of months and trying to incorporate UX/IA components
to not only help create a better end result for my clients but also
help with my own portfolio. I've also been involved with my local
AIGA chapter for several years-recently getting involved with the web
committee.

While visual design/front end dev jobs are definitely as challenging
as UX/IA, it seems as though there are far more associate/entry level
opportunities available in that area in comparison to UX/IA.
