Re: [IxDA Discuss] Creating User Interfaces to Work Within a CMS
I am working in a similar situation where we have limited page templates built in a CMS and limited developers to help create more custom pages. My biggest suggestion is to do some analysis of what your needs are, in regards to modules and templates. Use what you find to come up with 2 or 3 page templates that you believe will be flexible enough to meet your needs. Currently the site I work on has about 6 different page templates that have been created over the last year. So be strategic about when you request new templates and sometimes you will just need to make what you currently have work. I hope this helps some. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?
I don't believe there is a such thing as too many or too few personas. Each project has it's own unique requirements. My first suggestion is to be thorough in your analysis of each role. The system needs to meet everyone's needs. If you believe you can effectively use only 3 personas then start building your argument for it. Do a cost analysis and in detail explain how 3 personas can be just as effective as 15. If they are not willing to go down to 3, try a compromise with 5 or 7. Just keep working from there until you reach an effective but most of all efficient number of personas. Also, be open to using all 15 personas, it can actually be beneficial and may help you create a great product instead of a good product. I hope this helps. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Study IxD - What are my options?
Hi there, thanks for all the responses. Dave, I think I made it pretty clear what I am looking for. I dont really mind what the program is called. My main requirement is that it covers lab work and the following technologies are being taught: web design (design theory, photoshop,..) web programming (html, css, flash,...) Thats actually it. If there are courses on interaction design, human-computer design are being taught around those technologies perfect! Of course it is lovely to study at a highly recognised university, but this i not really what I am after. I just want to get into this field more deeply. Also I understand that geographical wishes should be put aside during a graduate program, but I believe, that if I can study in SF (which is a place where I would like to spend a couple of years), I will be able to get into the industry more easily. I experienced this with my undergraduate degree already. (also i totally exclude Europe because I spent 26 yrs here already and am bored of it). Well, I created a list of degrees my own as well...which contains approx. 60 programs so farbut if I narrow it down, there is maybe 2-3 schools I could apply for...and still somehow I dont have the feeling that I found the totally right one... So actually, a list of all the programs you are excited about is the best help I can get at the moment. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Study IxD - What are my options?
Well, thanks for the advice, guys! You are helping me a lot! Bella, you are absolutely right. And I am not excluding the east coast, acutally I`d love to go to NYC for example. But still, if I can prefer a location, it`ll be California because it seems to me, that all good interaction and web design comes from there. So why not go there and get into it, right? Also, I understand that those technologies are not being taught from the beginning. I am pretty good with photoshop and so on, but still not on a professional level. I think a good program with lots of course and lab work will help me to feel secure enough to approach customers. But also it seems, as if there are no good programs around the bay area and California at all... Asia acutally is interesting. I already live 2 years in Tokyo, Japan. But I couldnt find anything over there. Any suggestions? So, pants down: are there any programs in California, that you know of, which might fit me? Also, I found this program in Sydney...what do you think about it? http://mim.iml.uts.edu.au/index.html . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Study IxD - What are my options?
Hi there, I am so happy I found this place and believe that I will finally find answers to my zillions of questions ;) I have a degree in media management (which is like business administration for media companies) and currently work as a product manager for an innovative online company in germany. As product manager I constantly do concepts about our websites and features, so I already have professional experience in the area of interface and web design. I always had a huge passion for design, internet and photography. And now I want to commence my educational career in this area. I am looking for any kind of degree (certificate, associates degree, masters, ...) in the US which should be 1-2 years in duration. Ideally the curriculum should cover parts from graphic design (like color theory, photoshop, illustrator) and preferrably some areas of development as html and flash. I have found a couple of programs in Australia, which would be an option for me, too. But I really really want to go to the US! What would you do in my situation? Where should I look for universities or degrees. So far I have found programs like the MSP at San Fran State and some others. I`d love to study in San Francisco...what do you think? Is there any good schools around the bay area which would fit my needs? Thanks a lot! Jan Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! You still need a Mac (or PC) for the iPad to sync with. To expound on Luke's question of how does it work with an iPhone, I don't think it does. This doesn't create a triangle of iPhone, Mac, iPad. I've got an electric toothbrush at home as well (Oral-B, I think it is) which has an automatic timer for 2 or 3 minutes. I don't remember which it is because I don't have to. When I start brushing it starts counting for me and pulses to let me know when I've gone on long enough. It doesn't matter how awake or tired I am, it doesn't make me remember to set an egg timer, if I need to cut the brushing short I can... *it doesn't make me do anything that I wouldn't be doing otherwise*. Re: [IxDA Discuss] How do you pitch UCD process (or design thinking)?
Hi Kelvin, If you come in on Day 1, guns blazing, you're going to encounter resistance. Start slow, understanding the environment and go from there; context goes a long way. - Were there usability initiatives in the past that didn't turn out well? Look for this in the form of lipstick-on-the-pig contract dollars that went nowhere. Being able to explain why this didn't work is a good start. - Is the product in a space where getting usability right is perceived as low-value (it's not, or you wouldn't be there). For example, if you're working on an application for highly technical folk, it can be challenging and some may throw their hands up - helping them understand goes a long way. The old saying, the proof is in the pudding. The absolute number one way to convince people is successively larger victories on the design front. Apply your practice(s) to projects of ever-increasing size. Best of luck! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Who codes your production HTML/CSS/JS?
Richard, My experience, in both agencies and large corporations, is that the front-end team tends to be semi-autonomous, but organizationally closer (and often beneath) the back-end or systems teams. Ironic, since the good ones tend to be more philosophically aligned with Design teams. The level of ability varies greatly, but your question was implicitly condescending when you asked, more than *just* HTML/CSS/Javascript. Besides the intricacies and broad design and SEO ramifications of quality HTML work, in today's web applications, Javascript is often the principal tool in creating rich internet application experiences. As such, empowered front-end developers are often more attuned to Design's wants/needs as well as the means to deliver on them. The only company type which I've found to take substantial advantage of this affinity is the start-up, but even then it's a total crap-shoot. ~ yoni Jonathan S. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Who codes your production HTML/CSS/JS?
I guess I'm just touchy. I've also followed that career trajectory, though I actually started with something more akin to über-traditional IA (building taxonomies for search), then made my way from back-end towards the front, now splitting time between front-end development and IA/IxD. I will say this, I think that the Bay Area has many more do-it-all developers/designers. My experiences as a dot-commer in SF actually made me into the generalist I am -- there was a much greater, um, respect (?) for the well-rounded geek. On the other hand, I've found that being a generalist is often scoffed at by development team managers in other places I've lived (including New York, and particularly at agencies). (On the other hand, it usually ends up earning generalists the respect of both fellow team members, as well as leaders of other teams. Go figure.) ~ yoni Jonathan S. UK/US difference maybe? Adrian Perhaps, but I've found it to be about 50 Tech/Engineering, 25/25 Design and Product/Marketing. I think this is very much variable from company to company. Almost all of my friends in SFO, for example, own an entire vertical of their projects/products -- from back-end to IA to front-end. It ~blows my mind~, and some are miserable about it, but I don't get the impression it's a Bay Area USA methodology. Er...is it? I didn't find the initial question condescending, speaking as someone who came from doing front-end development exclusively and gradually moved into more conceptual design, as Dave mentioned. In this case, 'just' speaks to me as 'only thing done', much as my best friend just does Oracle implementations. The companies with which I worked moved in that direction chronologically as I went along my career path: just HTML/CSS/Javascript, to doing front-end production code and IA/IxD, just using HTML/CSS/JS/Flash for prototyping and presentation to not doing it all all except as an artifact of particular programs such as iRise or Axure. I like how various tools can help me reach certain ends, but sometimes...I just gotta whip something together by hand, both for a particular end and so I don't lose my edge. [IxDA Discuss] Software Websites: Box Shots?
Imagine you design Websites for software products. Your company's products are compelling and well designed. What do you put on your Website homepage? How do you fulfill your mission of distinguishing your product suite when some of your products are similar? To add more context, imagine you know that many of your customers will download the software on the spot when they visit your site. A few will order physical copies. The defacto standard seems to be box shots -- thumbnail images of the box the software comes in. Is that how you would approach the design? Why? Why not? [IxDA Discuss] Aren't we just a little important to democracy?
So I just went to write our new US administration my first e-mail from whitehouse.gov. Ready and eager for that much-touted new open line of communication into our government! I filled out all my info. on the contact form, wrote a title in the message box stating (pleading), PLEASE MAKE WALL STREET ACCOUNTABLE! then hit the paragraph return button. It submitted my message (ahem.. title only) to the White House. Would have been nice to explain my point. It's always boggled my mind why the gov't doesn't put UX advocates (including designers, researchers, coders, QA) front and center in the design of citizen-technology interfaces. Don't even get me started on voting. Does anyone have any experience/ evidence... HOPE?? to the contrary? Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Designers: What is your elevator pitch?
I've played with a few different responses%u2014trying to give the field its due recognition. I've attempted going into detail about the intersection of human needs and technology be it online, with a product, or in an environment and how everything around us involves interactions with objects, people, and places. But to those who's minds refuse to be blown, I tell them: I make complex technology easy to use. Ultimately, there is some piece of equipment, device, or website that a person considers to be a very important part of their life. Whatever it may be, let them know it took a brilliant mind to bring it to life. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Remote usability testing
Hi Kevin, We did a lot of remote usability testing while I was at Microsoft since our customer councils were spread out across the globe. Being able to record and annotate the recording is really critical... MS had a custom tool, but I'd look to the tools that others have recommended for some good ideas. Beyond that I think there are some procedural questions that you might want to consider. Since you aren't going to be there to work with the participants face-to-face, I recommend arranging a 10-15 minute phone call before conducting any testing to introduce yourself and just talk about the process. This was helpful for laying the ground work and getting the user used to talking to you on the phone, in the same way practicing a think aloud in person helps the user adjust to that process. Since you're doing this remotely, you have the benefit of users using the software to do their own tasks, as opposed to tasks that you have created (assuming your users are already using the software). In this case, you might consider a diary study, where users take notes on their use of the software for 2 weeks - jotting down how they used the system, making special notes of any high or low points. You can then use the diary for a guided retrospective during your actual interview, and cast a wider net in terms of issues that you find. There are certainly tradeoffs between a diary study and a traditional one-shot usability study, but I was fairly successful in finding a fair few critical issues with a remote diary study. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Cramming what we do into a few hours
Addressing content, method and process, I've been a fan of Scott Berkun. Ahead of his time, his early perspectives may be especially relevant given this challenge. E.g., http://www.scottberkun.com/blog/category/teachingtraining/ - Andrew Andrew Schechterman, Ph.D. Denver, Colorado 303-886-2440 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.LinkedIn.com/in/andrewschechterman On Jan 4, 2008 9:16 PM, Desiree McCrorey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Baruch Sachs [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My company has given me the opportunity to teach incoming technical and project management type folks about what it is that we do. The goal is to help these folks understand where we come in in the overall product development methodology. I have about 2-3 hours to give these folks a sense of what our profession is about, our activities and the value it adds when properly incorporated into a project. So I am curious: given those admittedly loose parameters what topics should I be sure to cover? First, I'd recommend putting yourself in their 'shoes'. What would you give a crap about wrt IX if you were a project/technical manager. At the simplest level, you'd probably want to know how us types makes your managerial life easier, better, more efficient, save money, etc. Reflecting that in whatever you present should help keep their interests piqued. Another approach is to tap into their own usability experiences, especially those they unknowingly struggle with everyday. For example, when I teach usability to folks who work in a tech environment, I find out how many accounts and passwords they have to manage. In one company, between building, phone, computer, various networks, multiple email accounts, bug reporting account, special security accounts, each employee averaged about 16 UIDs and password pairs just to do their daily tasks. This was something they couldn't believe and actually denied until I tallied them up on the spot. Perhaps, within your audience there are cell phones with clear examples of great and crappy interaction models. When your audience gains a new perspective/insight into their familiar world and sees how poor UI design impacts their daily activities, you'll have most of them hooked. So fine. They can see how usability could impact them personally. Now address how these activities can impact them professionally. There many great product design stories and how companies who used the proper methods and strategies to produce those great products reaped lots of money, improved their reputation and businesses. As managers, they'd probably like to hear a couple of those tales. Once you feel they're putty in your hands, they digest the details of how you need to integrate your methods and tasks into the product lifecycle. Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA give-back
I also marvel at the wad of catalogs that I have to pry out of my overstuffed mailbox this time of year. greendimes.com has already jumped into the junk mail fray with a service that you admittedly pay for, but is supposed to help reduce the flow as well as plant trees to make up for some of the waste. They have a few bulleted factoids about the amount of junk mail generated but I think they could probably use a more engaging representation of those numbers (but that's just me - I'm a sucker for visuals that show piles of mail bigger than my house). Another site that tackles an enviro-issue is reusablebags.com and they have a ticker-style counter to illustrate just how fast and how many plastic bags pile up. But I think what is so great about the junk mail idea is that it feels like the kind of project that any average person can participate in and feel good about, which isn't always true for some of the environmental solutions that one sees in a magazine article. Since this field can be so technology-based, perhaps bringing to light some of the impact that technology has on the environment would be an interesting exploration. I've seen folks throw old printers, monitors, computers, etc in dumpsters - they didn't realize there are options for recycling or donating equipment like that. So although there are often services or options for 'technology', people I've spoken with either did not know about them or did not see the value in effort or cost of some of these options. Maybe it's not necessarily creating new services but instead improving the exposure and benefits of some of the ideas that are already out there. Brianna Roberts On Dec 8, 2007 1:25 PM, Michael Tuminello [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: * define a big problem and see what we could do to help fix it - one that comes to mind offhand in the holiday season is all the junk mail and catalogs that are mailed out. no one wants them, but it is really difficult to avoid.
