Re: [IxDA Discuss] Looking for social media/social anxiety reference material
Gretchen, I couldn't find specific reports from Social Technologies but there are some newsletters and blog postings that look promising and interesting. Elin, that must have been a great talk. I'll definitely look up more from John Cacioppo. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Wizard/Form Design Inspiration
I saw this neat filter recently at http://www.sixwineseight.com that changes wine choices based on selected criteria and uses a graphic image to provide instant feedback. It's a much simpler form than you're probably looking for but I think it's a nice example of graphic feedback that's fun and could apply to a wizard. Something like a small interactive graphic that mimics the form of the document being created that serves as a little map to take the user through the creation process and gives them feedback about what's been done, might be useful in your case. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Looking for social media/social anxiety reference material
I know there's a few people with a psych background of some sort and many readers with a broad net around here so I thought I'd ask: Have you heard of any research/researchers, articles, books, etc. dealing with social media and social anxiety? General social psychology with relation to social media would be useful too. Thanks, Chris Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] What are your principles for making digital products/services
I like this thread because it made me realize I do not have an articulated list of principles that I can point to. While I'm working on that here's a couple of thoughts: Give a crap and remember that nice people will have to use your design to accomplish something--don't ruin their day and remember that they will not necessarily think like you the designer Easy is more important than and does not always equate to just one click Fun, delightful and beautiful are business worthy goals Edit--words, designs, process, graphics Get outside feedback--other designers for critique, stakeholders for business goals, subject matter experts for knowledge, users for verification Use the right tool (software, technology, process, approach) to solve the design problem; Don't be limited to one solution for all problems Sometimes your project success will be determined by whether or not you choose to be the bigger person and make the effort to bridge the conceptual/ideological gap--not your awesome design/coding . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Complementary skillsets?
Maybe you could combine several of these interests and work on a user test with prototypes or wireframes you create. Being able to test your solutions with your intended audience is something that is a big part of all IXD work and is such a great learning experience. It would also give you a good case study for a portfolio if you could describe your work from concept to an end product. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interface Prototyping and Usability Testing
Silverlight 3 might be helpful for high-fidelity prototypes as it supposed to have touch capability. http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2009/07/30/silverlight-3-multi-touch-introduction-fundamentals-basics.aspx We haven't tried it yet, but I've heard our developers make some oh cool comments. If users won't have the touch hardware, can you mimic that experience with a larger finger-tip sized cursor to test your layout? If you're doing more sketchy prototypes something like the Sketchflow in Expression Blend or Axure might help you generate quick iterative designs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Onceability
What an interesting way to look at this experience. I'm particularly thinking of onceability for web sites. You know the ones you fill out a form for once so you can look at your second cousin's wedding pictures. Or that iPhone app you downloaded and it was kind of neat and you never touched it again. It's a neat lens to look through to help focus on how to make sure our site/app/product is not a one off. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] iRise: Fast prototyping tool?
Stu, I had a similar feeling after trying Flash Catalyst. I attempted to build a prototype with it and quit pretty early in the process, hanging my head in frustration. I couldn't seem to get it to do anything. (Granted my ActionScript skills are limited at best.) For the past couple of weeks I've been using Blend 3 with Sketchflow and have a had a much, MUCH better experience. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Nested Table Alternatives?
Hi Marcus, We're working with WPF/Visual Studio 2008. The user can edit only one thingy at a time a time and they are able to edit all cells of the table. Hi Chris, In the instance of this table, I'm looking at how the data is displayed which is tablular rather than how the code is formatted. I should have stated we're working in a non-web app since I know to most of us table brings up html layout issues. Your response reminds me of my web designer friend's who looked alarmingly at me last night, like You're still using tables instead of divs!? when I was trying to explain the same problem. I promise you both to never use tables for html layout. :) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Nested Table Alternatives?
Does anyone have any good examples of alternatives to nested tables or decent implementations of nested tables? My problem table is made of rows of thingies and there are 3-4 property columns for the thingies. Now each thingy has multiple widgets with 3 or 4 properties that can be added to the thingy. All of the cells are editable because the user builds the table by adding a thingy and then its associated widgets. Currently we have a solution that involves the thingy row being exandable/collapsible to show the widget table. Any more elegant ideas? Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Using Interaction Design to Change Behavior
I think some of the fun ways we're using interaction design to affect behavior now is in our personal life and productivity. The WiiFit example is great because it takes something we don't necessary like to do and makes it into a game. I disagree that a dvd will give you feedback and game play in the way a game will and that makes a big difference in incentive for many people. Jane McGonigal has some great research in that direction. Another example I saw recently that made me laugh but also think, About time!, is a self control application for Mac that lets you block the forces of distraction for a set time period. http://visitsteve.com/work/selfcontrol/ I love the idea that we can use interaction design to make things that we are bad at (remembering to pay bills, not answering email when we need to be working on something else) or don't like (exercise) and make it easier and more fun. I'll have to check out personal informatics to see how those tools work. I'm also interested in the examples like Project Masiluleke that affect change to larger populations. I'm not used to thinking on that big of a scale, but the potential of focusing design attention toward solving human problems by making it easier and more desirable to change behavior is amazing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Client education
I just read an article yesterday about the User Experience Iceberg that looks useful in explaining the work it takes to go from point A to the pretty, friendly interface. It's not a new concept but it was new to me and the article links to slides you can download for your own presentations. It's not exactly a justification of IxD but it's a great metaphor because people know they want a useful, attractive interface but sometimes need a better understanding in how successful UI or IxD is acheived. http://www.affectivedesign.org/archives/209 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
