Re: [IxDA Discuss] Setting up a UX conference in Lisbon - need advice and ideas

2009-10-21 Thread Evan K . Stone
Wow! All I'd need is an invitation! ;)

I've been looking for a work-related reason to get to Lisboa/Lisbon
since my wife and I started learning Portuguese last year... I love
the language and the culture, and one of my best friends is from
Sintra. Evidently there's a amazing technological growth there as
well, so that's really exciting too.

But out of curiosity is this going to be next year's version of
SHiFT, or a similar/derivative conference?

Obrigado/Thanks!

[IxDA Discuss] Simple iPhone Wireframe Templates for Sketching

2009-09-18 Thread evan k. stone
OK, so maybe it's not as slick fun as Design Commission's stencil
(http://www.designcommission.com/shop/iphone-stencil-kit/), but in case
anyone is interested, I have created and posted some *very* basic iPhone
wireframe templates (3-up) for download by anyone who wants them from my
blog (PDF and Visio formats are in the .zip file):

 http://interactivelogic.net/wp/2009/09/iphone-wireframe-templates/

I needed these for some upcoming projects for which I just wanted to
print out some blank templates for sketching ideas, and then I figured
I'd just make them available for download in case others would like
them. Hope you find them helpful/useful!

enjoy!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Simple iPhone Wireframe Templates for Sketching

2009-09-18 Thread Evan K . Stone
Ummm... yeah. I have seen that, and that's precisely why I did it
myself.

Add a three-ring punch and a binder into the mix and whammo! I have
my own sketchbook with the following added benefits:

1. It's a fraction of the cost (except the time to create... but
this was fun and worth it)
2. I can rearrange/add/remove pages, and not get those pieces of
confetti if I rip a page out of the book (that makes me crazy).
3. I can relatively easily print them in any color I want with a
quick mod of the visio template. ;)
4. I can share it with other folks who may have already been looking
for this kind of thing.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Slider orientation best practice

2009-05-14 Thread Evan K. Stone
I haven't found any other examples of this in some brief web
searching, it would be interesting to see if anyone else has done it.

How about the date range slider in Quicken Online:

er.png

The dropdown on the side has preset date ranges (30/60/90 days, etc.)
that expand the gap between the handles, which are also freely
adjustable (with a pop-up calendar).

Just throwing it out there to see if this (or something similar) would
fit your needs.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Pagination best practices

2009-05-12 Thread Evan K. Stone
 However, when I tried Google's 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 results
preferences, it was much easier for me to scan through 10 results,
didn't require as much scrolling (which is painful to people with
repetitive stress injuries, fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc.),

Speaking as someone with RSI problems, I'd WYY rather scroll rather
than paginate. Pagination is Pure Evil for me, and it is _much_ easier
for me to Page Up/Down in a scrollable region than to attempt to line up
my cursor with every page and click a next button (if it's even visible
to begin with, which means you're back to scrolling AND wrestling with
pages...).*

The one exception to that is when the list fits exactly in a screen's
worth of browser real estate (i.e. above the fold), and a Next button
is consistently in the same spot every time and I don't have to move my
mouse pointer (i.e. it just _happens_ to be on the same spot every time
where the Next button resides). That situation is generally pretty
exciting to me, and it is also... extremely... rare.

So, if I can adjust a list to display 100+ items I'll do it!

Here's an even better example, however:

Google Reader.

Its infinite scrolling** is awesome: it just loads up new items when it
needs them. Awesome!

...and since it's pretty easy to get an enormous list of RSS feed
entries (especially if you go away on vacation for a couple of days! ;),
GR's mode of scrolling is very effective for me.

Obviously, this is just how it affects me in _my_ particular case, and
YMMV.

HTH.

///eks

* This got me thinking just now... perhaps linking Page Up and Page Down
keys to previous and next (or the reater than/less than keys since they
*look* like prev/next arrows) would be a nice way to enhance pagination?
Anyone already doing either of these interactions on the web?

** If Google Reader has a scrolling limit, I haven't encountered it.
They seem to employ a similar concept of Google Maps' map scrolling to a
list of data.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] What music for interaction designers

...I guess I'm little slow on the draw for this one.

Since I dj on the side, I generally listen to my own mixes:

http://www.recombinantstudios.com/dj/mixes.html

The mixes are mostly minimal/tech-house, though I do have some retro-ish
mixes with 80's tracks too in the archives (can't get away from my
roots, man! ;)

I also listen to potential tracks to be included in the aforementioned
mixes, or listen to other dj's mixes from which to get ideas
inspiration (sound familiar?).

The droning really helps with keeping other sounds around me at bay and
helps me focus better. Sometimes when the music runs out I just keep the
headphones on for the iso-chamber effect.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] iPhone Custom Application Standards andemulators for testing - reference

2009-02-04 Thread Evan K. Stone
Can anyone point to iPhone custom application design standards. And
the emulators available for testing the application in our local
machine.

It depends what you want to do. It sounds like you want to develop
native iPhone applications, not web applications, so that rules out
iPhoney and Safari in developer mode.

For developing native iPhone applications, the guidelines, resources,
and tools you need are available on the Apple iPhone Developer website:

   http://developer.apple.com/iphone/

All you have to do is sign up for their free developer program
(http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/develop.html) and download
the SDK, which includes an iPhone simulator. One thing to keep in mind
is that the tools not only require a Mac, they require OS X 10.5
(Leopard). So you might want to make sure you have a Mac that is running
Leopard first.

Additionally, if you don't have access to an iPhone, don't overlook the
possibility of using an iPod Touch for testing. It's an awesome device
in its own right, perfect as a testing device (except for testing cell
network bandwidth since it only does wi-fi), and can be had for around
$150 on eBay. My iPod touch enabled me to do just about everything an
iPhone could do (except call people), and I used it for over a year
until I finally took the iPhone plunge. No regrets. Highly recommended.
And no monthly fee! ;)

Hope this helps!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Email to friend a valid feature?

2008-12-04 Thread Evan K. Stone
I use this feature A LOT, both to mail interesting articles, videos,

I use the feature fairly often, but almost exclusively for the latter
case mentioned by Marilyn: that of emailing items of interest to
*myself.*

I rarely use the feature to email items to other people, since I can
usually just as easily send a url with a real email message or use an
instant messenger, instead of relying on the system's canned email
message. The one primary exception is when it's a flash-based
application (or similar ilk), in which case I'm generally forced to use
the site's email to a friend function (e.g. beatport.com online music

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interesting interface design

2008-09-17 Thread Evan K. Stone
Any thoughts regarding how to put a no click interface to use?

There was one aspect of the no-click interface that worked for me: the
timed trigger button. As you hover over the button, it fills itself
with a darker color like a progress bar and then triggers when the
progress reaches the full point. It gives you a little bit of a comfort
delay instead of the BAM! BAM! BAM! of the rest of the experience (the
first BAM! made me jump out of my seat... not fun.).

So I guess it seems to me that a slower, more fluid approach might make
more sense, in which the interface slowly reveals something about what
is going to happen if you move to a particular region, but allows you
time to move out in case you didn't really want to do that. I move my
mouse cursor around to random spots on the screen so I could imagine
myself accidentally moving to or hovering over a region that enacted
something that I really didn't want to do.

It brings up some good questions, however.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Silverlight pattern library

2008-08-08 Thread Evan K. Stone
I remember years ago when I could simply go to the MSDN section for

 version of that.

...speaking as a developer (one of the hats I wear), I feel your pain.
Unfortunately, Microsoft has seemed to have stepped aside a bit and let
the third parties come up with the bulk of the controls this time
around. So your best bet may be to check out what Telerik, Infragistics,
Component One, et al., have to offer in the way of controls and use them
as proto-design patterns (nice term. me likey.).

I may be doing quite a bit of WPF-based design and development from here
on out, so maybe we can use each other (and anyone else using
Silverlight or WPF who would like to collaborate) as resources for
patterns we've encountered or come up with. It sure would be nice to
have an open wiki or some kind of collaborative repository for this
too...

i'm saddened that this application relies on some crazy
unconventional mouse that no person would ever have in their home.

hmmm... I didn't get the sense that the application necessarily *relied*
on it, but that the application could interpret input from alternate
controllers should you feel inclined to use one (or more). But then
again, I could be mistaken -- and that would be good news for Novint! ;)

[tangent]
One thing I found interesting is that on a USB-based DJ controller I
recently purchased, I can configure it so that it receives MIDI messages
that cause indicator lights to turn on this just got me thinking
about other physical (haptic?) controllers that not only feed controller
data *to* a target application, but also can respond to data coming
*from* the application. It's a little thing, I guess, and it's
definitely not anything new or groundbreaking, but it did give me a
little aha! since I had to set it up myself (I guess it's something
akin to the Haptic Pen project that was discussed a while back...).

[IxDA Discuss] Success and Failure Symbolic Representations Patterns for Details

2008-08-06 Thread Evan K. Stone
I'm wrestling with the problem of how to tackle a couple of design
problems at the moment, and could use a little advice and help:

1. Success and Failure Symbolic Representations

One thing I've been dealing with is how to represent success or failure
of a process through colors, shapes, and symbols, and I'm just not
really satisfied with the things that I've come up with. Is there any
interesting prior art in this regard that someone would like to share?

As a corollary thought: TiVo uses green red buttons with Thumbs
Up/Thumbs Down idiom. People in the US seem to get that paradigm, but I
was just curious to know if they use a different paradigm in their other
international markets (it looks like the device for Mexico has retained
the thumbs, but I couldn't tell with the controller for Taiwan -- the
controller seems to have the green/red buttons). Additionally, since I
don't think my designs are going international (for now), that paradigm,
while a bit campy, might actually work for the above problem (I was also
considering [big!] plus and minus symbols).

I would really appreciate some feedback on this if anyone feels like
giving it... ;)

2. Design Patterns for Details

The second issue is how to display more information or details for a
process that has completed (with either success or failure).

Typical patterns I've seen are the Mac OS Disclosure Triangle, or in
Windows quite frequently there will be a button with the label Details
to expand or contract a dialog depending on the orientation of the
brackets, or also a tiny button with a plus sign to perform the
revelation. I'm sure there are more that I just haven't recalled or
encountered.

Of these, I think I'm more agreeable to the disclosure triangle, but I
was just curious to see if anyone had come across or was working on more
interesting patterns for this problem. I guess I just don't want to do
what's easiest for the developer (i.e. me, in this case), but rather I'd
like to explore some new patterns if they exist.

Thanks in advance!

Go buy/borrow a modern game console and check out the various rumble
and shock controllers. It really does make a significance
difference
 in gameplay.

yes, of course! I'm not a console gamer, but you're right - like the
steering consoles that rumble/shake when you drive over rough terrain.
I think I was just sort of mesmerized by the glowing lights... plus, the
discovery was almost accidental. Things started magically lighting up
on the controller after configuring my software to send messages out.

At any rate, it generated some thoughts on giving feedback to
controllers, FWIW...

 It's a pretty straightforward translation -- I'd really like a mouse
that thumps as I rollover links on a page or active spots on a map.
I'd be surprised if someone hasn't already made that yet.

I'm sure it's on its way! ;)

It's highly coincidental that this topic came up, since I too was
greatly impressed by the user interface ideas presented in Iron Man.
Immediately afterward, that's all I could think and talk about. I'm glad
I'm not the only one who had that kind of reaction...

[spoiler]

I was intrigued with the manipulation of the suit design model in 3D
holographic space (and the trash can. nice touch.). I had this
anticipatory excitement come over me, since what appeared in Minority
Report became reality (to a some degree) in Perceptive Pixel, and
because just over the last week or so there have been discussions on
this list regarding free hand gestures, so perhaps we will see the
holographic 3D interactions in the not too distant future... very
exciting to think about.

Film sure can be great inspiration.

There were two thought-provoking things for me:

 1. Most unrealistic moment in the film: when Jeff Bridges plugs the
stolen
power supply into the Evil Robot and it works first off, without
needing to
shim, rewire the connector, configure the IP address, etc. I laughed
aloud.
Flying robots and 3-D talking holograms seem much more likely somehow.

 2. Thing I was surprised and delighted by: the giant fighting robots

...since it coincides with two things:

 * Apple's WWDC
 * The 1-year anniversary of the v1 iPhone.

But who really knows? It's all pretty much speculation at this point,
but I sure hope it arrives soon... ;)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Desktop application menus

2008-04-30 Thread Evan K. Stone
Love it or hate it, Microsoft has defined guidelines for menus that
have
formed de facto patterns by their pervasiveness. Check out
 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511502.aspx for details.

It's interesting that they didn't include the Ribbon in the guidelines,
but that would be another candidate for wrapping up a lot of
functionality in a more compact package (with automatic collapsing and
expanding).

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Windows -- what would you change in interaction?

2008-04-09 Thread Evan K. Stone
The interesting thing about the suggestion/recommendation of Launchy and Dash
is that they're both keystroke-oriented interfaces, and I find that
fascinating, since it begins to show that for some users, the OS' [G]UI gets in
the way and is not the most effective method of interaction.

It reminds me of the presentation by David Cronin at Interaction '08, in which
he pretty much says the same thing regarding applications for day traders and
systems they use, which have basically command-line interpreters built in since
time is of the essence and it's actually quicker for them to enter in the
commands and data than to try to point-and-click.

Thanks for recommending these utilities, since it certainly gets me thinking in
other directions with regard to projects I'm working on (or may have to work on
in the future), not just Windows or OS user interaction.

In a perfect world Windows would ship with Launchy

Dash would also be handy: http://trydash.com/home/

There's a few extra features here to Launchy but they also come at a small
price.

(What I wouldn't give to have Quicksilver on Windows).
