Great thread and reminder that I would get more work done if I turned off Radio 4! I've lined up Shostakovich, Arvo Part and Dead can Dance. Re: [IxDA Discuss] ATM machines
I was reminded of this thread last night when I took some money out of a Barclays atm. They have the alignment of buttons and actions sorted. They put a block arrow to each of the buttons even if there is no associated action. That means you can be sure what position it is you want to hit. With regards the transaction charges raised in the first message. As James said, here in the UK it is rare for a high street bank to charge for withdrawals at all. However we do have a growing number of standalone ATM's that sit in pubs, village stores or even sports centres. I remember using similar stand alone ATM in 7-11 last year in Florida. These standalones are leased to and managed by the venue who then takes proceeds from the charges for withdrawals. They vary between £1.50-1.75. Everyone I have encountered displays this information up front as part of the screen saver so you cannot miss it. I suspect this solution is more related to financial codes of practice rather than business being willingly helpful! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Widget Awareness
"click "Add application" immediately (of course, this can only be harmful if the facebook app will for example display something undesirable in your profile) ." OT : Its not the facebook app that is necessarily undesirable. I removed SuperWall with all its nice features because one or two people sent me pictures of naked people that were sitting on my profile for several days. Not nice soft focus arty ones either. I told the individuals off but realised that I would have to be online a lot more often than I was interested in to ensure this didn't happen again. Bringing it back to topic (a little), adding widgets or applications onto a personal owned page that other people can contribute content to has repercussions. You cannot control the content and cannot be there all the time to moderate it. Would people find more benefit and use from widgets if they felt more trust in the content or their control over it? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Icons VS Labels and Localization ...
Grace said "1. Phones use text to describe their functionality already, and people understand what those actions are. 2. I figured that it would be easier to translate those actions to the other languages. " and "we have clients that are 55-70 and building the actions that was made sense to them in user testing." Its so good to hear people thinking about cross cultural/language differences during development. Its an interesting challenge you have got. Not only are the customers likely to intuit different icons or understand different text descriptions of the functions because of language and culture, but they also are older and potentially less likely to be familiar with buzz words. And of course as we age our visual acuity reduces so icons would have to be very visually simple and clear as well. I'd go back to the developers with your cross language user testing results and say we need to store different icons or text for different languages. Are you obliged to shove each language into exactly the same design? German speakers are probably comfortable with their labels taking rather more screen estate than Japanese. Can the developers help you with a template that expands or contracts with the differing requirements of languages? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interesting tab navigation example
I've nothing against javascript per se, in fact some of my favourite sites use it... as they say ;D I love some of the uses like checking username availability or password strength on the fly but have issue when there is no fall back. Its not just to do with visually impaired people and browser agents that could handle things better. Corporate firewalls are also a random problem for people accessing sites that rely upon javascript. see http://tinyurl.com/yhcr7o for examples. I like to approach programming in a similar manner to many of the designers on this discussion list. White space is good. Brevity is good. The less you write the less you have to debug and maintain. The HTML protocol includes well established and well tested form submission so unless this javascript adds something I would ask why reinvent the wheel? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interesting tab navigation example
You know it could be argued that they have come up with a "pretty" solution to the larger fonts or smaller browser window problem. Take your average joe site with pixel height navigation and up the font size. Kappow! the screen becomes a mess. But this MS page keeps it's visual design. On the other hand they have focused on the visual design and not considered any deviation. It does not gracefully degrade without javascript or style. P.S. I've noticed the form to post to this list is also javascript controlled. What functionality would be lost if that were changed to default html submit button that would be accessible to more folk? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh my, apologies for the dreadful spelling and grammar in the last post. The last para should read "Since most of the participants *do not have psychology background,* I have to ask this question of the people you work with. Re: [IxDA Discuss] "Design" in Interaction Design?
I too noticed the large number of graphics and arts backgrounds in the 'how did you get here thread'. But what struck me was how few (I think only one) who mentioned any psychology studies. When I started my degree I studied alongside working as a computer programmer. It seemed self evident there would be people working in the cross over between the disciplines. Humans interact with computers so we need to understand both in order to make the experience for both better. The single psych reference against 90% arts/graphic design confirms my experience that psychologists are not pushed (or pulled) towards this incredibly important field. Since most of the participants on this list I have to ask this question of the people you work with. How many of your colleagues have studied psychology? Is it considered important or are psych degrees to general to be of use? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (One is a rightside > up, the other upside down, a nod to indicate start and end.) With the greatest of respest Andrei because it does look lovely, you are designing for the web so you cannot control how people see your lovely web page. For example I find the contrast between pale gray and yellow is too low for me to read comfortably so I up the font size twice which makes the font much denser and throws your page into wide horizontal scroll. The footer depth then becomes a major issue because I can only see about 12 lines of text in my browser. I'm not complaining. Your layout and design means that my particular viewing preferences are very gracefully accommodated when compared to the vast majority of websites. But the key thing about the web is that it is not a printed brochure. You can't get too precious about typography when your readers can change it without your control. Re: [IxDA Discuss] 'Select Country' dropdown
@pauric - re hostip.info. My IP address is squarely placed in the Irish Sea so probably would not come with the right country! Speaking from the other side of the pond I would recommend sticking to our official (abbreviated) title of "United Kingdom". There are unfortunately several sites where you have to hunt down what they have called us UK, Britain, Great Britain or four entries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We only use the split listing when we want to enter more teams in sporting events or having our regular internal spats about control from London. The UK has a very reliable post code look up system - our postal codes usually refer to fewer than 10 homes - however it is a licensed product so you would need a lot of customers to justify the cost. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
