Great thread and reminder that I would get more work done if I turned
off Radio 4!

I've lined up Shostakovich, Arvo Part and Dead can Dance. Not sure
which will be most productive :D

The first view of what a small, but growing, sample of us listen-to
has been generated this week by our Last.fm IxDA group. So for those
of you that are interested:

http://www.last.fm/group/IxDA/charts

Sigur Ross, Portishead, Air, Bjork ... I'm sensing an electronic
downtempo theme...

"Not representative"? then add your taste to the blend by joining
the Last.fm group which then provides us all with an IxDA radio
station of 'music to design interactions to'.

*Probably* the last post on the topic ;)

With best wishes,
John.

Wow! I am feeling like the gate keeper for the almost 40 crowd.

Like the others on this list, my musical tastes run the gamut too.
When I design or code, I really like anything that keeps my mind
chilled, my mood light and my focus on the task at hand. That could
be classical, jazz, blues, world, ambient, acoustical or eclectic...

Some artists on my ipod...Miles Davis, Coltrane, Air, Imogen Heap,
Calexico, Zero 7, Remy Zero, Mazy Starr, MOS, Buddah Bar, Cafe del
Mar, Putumayo: Brazilian Lounge, Armik, Beck, Bright Eyes, Feist,
Frou frou, Belle & Sebastian, Blond Redhead, Carbon Leaf, Iron &
Wine, Wilco, Ryan Adams, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Depeche Mode, Echo
& The Bunnymen, The Cure...and the list goes on.

2008-02-28 Thread Eugene Kim
If I listen to music, it's gotta be a favorite artist and an album I'm
already familiar with. I can't listen to anything new or that isn't a
favorite because it becomes a distraction... "Should I rate this
song?", "This one doesn't sound so great", etc.

4- or 5-star songs, shuffle, repeat. Specific artists include
Metallica, Morrissey, Ministry, Elliott Smith, Soundgarden, Cat Power,
Half-handed Cloud, and a dash of others.

(Then again, I don't think it helps to have my Gibson SG/Fender amp
sitting right next to my desk, either.)

I never think of fun topics to talk about (frequent complaint at work),
but
have been wondering what folks like to listen to while they work, if
anything. I recently found an online station called somafm.com that's
been
able to keep me working into the wee hours even as I'm approaching 40

Hope it's not too far off-topic...

2008-02-28 Thread James Leslie
Yeah, I am the same, I'm getting to grips with it now and pretty much
select what I am going to listen to based on the mood that I want to
convey. I find that Industrial and noise stuff tends to yield more
angular designs than some trip hop or ambient which tend to yield more
flowing lines and curves in the design.

I do find, however, that I have to keep watch on how much industrial I'm
listening to when in 'graphics land' due to the possibility of the
design incorporating too much of a 'barbed wire and concrete' style.
Does anybody else find that the creative process can be greatly
influenced by what's currently playing?

2008-02-27 Thread Shaun Bergmann
That describes my process exactly. When in the depths of some convoluted,
confusing 3D logic path I require either absolute silence or at the most
some classical, ambient, trance. Vocals have a tendency to knock the whole
cardhouse down. (unless it's Sigur Ros, which one can't really sing along to
in the head)
Absolute silence is difficult at times with 3 other workstations directly
beside me, which is when the earplugs come out and the 'No Coheed and
Cambria' sign goes up.

When up here on the surface and doing the more visually creative aspects
however, things get quite a bit more upbeat. Industrial, old Skinny Puppy,
the Cramps, Interpol, She Wants Revenge etc.
I Love Yahoo Music's "artist fan station" for streaming. It's almost as
good as MusicMatch used to be.

I do find, however, that I have to keep watch on how much industrial I'm
listening to when in 'graphics land' due to the possibility of the design
incorporating too much of a 'barbed wire and concrete' style.

If I am designing I can listen to anything from Jazz to Goth/Industrial
to Classical, but when coding I can't really listen to stuff with
distinct vocals so it tends to be lots of ambient and trip-hop, with the
odd splash of techno or drum'n'bass thrown in.

Sigur Ros seem to make me most productive.

I agree with Lisa. I can't listen to anything with recognizable words

Cash, but I can't work to the man.

Or it could be something so familiar like a warm blanket that I don't
register the words, like the Minutemen or the Clash.

But lately, it's radio via iTunes. Either 1.FM Reggae Trade or African
Music Radio. Going for the happy. Or dublab, Orbital Grooves, Proton

With bursts of Brian Eno and Radiohead.

2008-02-27 Thread Patricia Garcia
I keep forgetting to charge up my mp3 player.

But if I did have access to music, it will vary. Mozart or anything
classical is good when I need to focus. When I need to wake up, a
strong latin beat helps get me moving, although this can be dangerous
as I might get up and start dancing and when my dancing legs get
going, there is no stopping me.

And so alternative rock or metal helps me with energy as well as the
worst that can happen is I start bopping my head, rarely will I get
up and start slamming into people.

I won't do hip hop or dance because of the lyrics being too
repetitive and therefore catchy. Possibly house music (origins in
Chicago), but that also has the danger of the lyrics catching me off
guard and I start singing them or I start dancing. So anything
dance-able or sing-able is out for work. After work, another story
altogether.

I have trouble working and listening to music with understandable words.
Some favorites that seem to get me going: Rachid Taha, Ekova, Alex di
Grassi, late Beethoven quartets, Miles Davis (my son named after), Altan,
Cocteau Twins, Afro-Celts, Mory Konte, Terje Rypdal, sacred choral music by
Palestrina.

I typically blast trip-hop in the car on the way home, and play quiet music
on the piano once I get there.

I actually use Peel (http://www.getpeel.com/) to download music from my
favorite MP3 blogs straight to iTunes. Then I quickly go through and rate
everything. Ones & twos are deleted immediately, threes stay in the mix,

(the Best Songs IMHO).

Having said that, no matter what music you listen to, I highly recommend

Depends on my mood and how much concentration is required. If I'm
thinking hard, I prefer music that is more background-like or
atmospheric -- something I won't be distracted by. If I'm pumping
out screens then I like music that entertains and motivates me while
I monkey away. E.g., something I can sing in my head to or tap my leg
to.

I recently merged my laptop and desktop iTunes libraries and squeezed
all of the music onto a 250GB Passport drive. I'm loving life right
now because I have so much music to match my varying moods at my
fingertips.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you "design"

2008-02-26 Thread Bryan Minihan
LOL...seems jazz, house, techno, and more or less "drone" music have a place
in design. Now I know what I'm going to do as soon as this project ends,
especially check out the irish rock reference =]

It wasn't so much that I'm getting close to 40, it's more that I'm feeling a
little too old to be putting in 80-100 hour weeks.

As for me, I run the gamut...for pure design work, Somafm's Tag's Trip works
perfectly, except when it thumps too much. If I'm writing code or testing
it has to be stuff I recognize and don't pay much attention to (Pink Floyd,
Limp Bizkit, Eagles, Commodores, Eminem, Doobie Brothers, KLF, Linkin Park,
Moby, Barry Manilow...you know..."stuff").

I've noticed lately that you can download 8-10 different remixes for most
songs older than 40 years, so I have 9 different versions of Another Brick
in the Wall - only 3 of which are Pink Floyd (that playlist has Hanz Zimmer
next to Marilyn Manson next to Korn and Keller Williams...whee!).

There are 40 year olds on this list? Weird. ;-)

Lately my team room has been playing a random person's ipod on shuffle. My

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you"design"

2008-02-26 Thread Scott Cobban
Great topic!

It depends on my mood. I tend to go with familiar stuff (either with or
without lyrics) when I need to hunker down. I do better if I can hum along
in my head (I'm in an a cappella group, so singing to myself is calming).

On recent "try new music" days, I've discovered:
Rilo Kiley
Pink Martini

When I need to hunker down (in order of preference):
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon/The Wall
The Beatles' later stuff
Billy Joel (anything)
Lionel Richie and the Commodores
Huey Lewis and the News

Great background music (not necessarily slow/mellow though):
classical (fan of Dvorak as well)
"The Thomas Crowne Affair" soundtrack
soundtracks from Pixar films
"Ocean's 11/12/13" soundtrack
Michael Buble
"Lord of the Rings" soundtrack

When I need something to pick me up:
"Superbad" soundtrack
Justin Timberlake
Manu Chao
"300" soundtrack
Heart

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you"design"

2008-02-26 Thread Sam Zaiss
I think that's a fun topic. :)

My music taste is too broad for me to target one radio station or
resource for design music... these days hard rock seems to bring out the
designer in me. However, if I need to get a lot done, I tend to opt for
music with a fast beat to try and keep my productivity up.

If you are similar, I might recommend Podrunner... it's designed to be
music to run to, but they are great hour-long mixes of dance, house,
techno, and a whole bunch more... all organized by their BPM. They're
all free downloads on iTunes... great for motivational workout music or
for design!

[IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you "design"

2008-02-26 Thread Jonathan Follett
This is a topic near and dear to my heart, probably because I was a fairly
dedicated musician before joining the ranks of the digital
workers. I think there's a strong connection between music and design ...

I'll throw out a plug for Boston-based finetune.com, a streaming music
service where you can create your own play lists.
It's quite useful when you're on the road or on site at a client
location--provided you have a broadband connection.
When I'm in the office, I plug my laptop into some killer speakers to get
the full effect.

As for genres, I find jazz and electronic music--particularly drum and
bass--to be great for getting in the zone.

Classical and jazz, mostly: Shostakovich's Symphonies 6 and 9,
Budapest String Quartet (mostly Beethoven there), instrumental
acoustic stuff by Keith Jarrett, Al DiMeola, Earl Klugh, Michael
Hedges, Doc Watson, Sea Level, Weather Report, Paul Winter Consort
(this is mostly stuff from the 1970's, kids) ... I also like Miles
Davis and Charlie Mingus.

Piedmont blues guitarists John Jackson and Etta Baker. Viva Quetzal
(music from the Andes and Central America).

My acoustic guitar is handy for break time ... which could be more
frequent. Back to work!

NPR, KQED, Yahoo Launchcast, mainly Classical or Classic Rock, 80's music, and
when I'm really hunkering down, Rammstein.

Apologies to any cubemates on the list for my singing...:P

I
never
think
of
fun
topics
to
talk
about
(frequent
complaint
at
work),
but
have
been
wondering
what
folks
like
to
listen
to
while
they
work,
if
anything.
I
recently
found
an
online
station
called
somafm.com
that's
been
able
to
keep
me
working
into
the
wee
hours
even
as
I'm
approaching
40
(yuck).

Hope
it's
not
too
far
off-topic...

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you "design"

2008-02-26 Thread Gloria Petron
I like the Buddha-Bar series, Putemayo world music, and classical (mainly
Dvorak).
Before my company blocked it, I was totally into radio.vh1.com - Blue Room
and Brazilia.
I could code all night listening to that stuff. There's something good about
being able to put on SOMETHING in the background that's just...noise, you're
listening to it but at the same time, you're not. It can't interfere with
your front-n-center thinking. I abhor coding in silence.

...does anyone remember when radio.vh1.com used to be SonicNet? I'm (sigh)
getting near 40 too, oyy.

Stephane Pompougnac's Hotel Costes series is my favorite as of late.
Out of those ten albums, there's literally not a bad one, although #7
is my current favorite.

for me it's generally punk and hardcore ... but i also love
experimental music and a good chunk of 20th century classical

when i get bored i'll throw on last.fm ...

lately i've been listening to Von Sudenfed, and lots of Husker Du/Bob
Mould since i'm going to see him play soon.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Offtopic: What music do you listen to while you"design"

2008-02-26 Thread Dante Murphy
Mostly I stick with what's on my iTunes, which is heavy on early jazz
(1920s), swing, early blues (20s and 30s), rockabilly, jump, and plenty
of punk and hardcore thrown in...and a little hip-hop, but not much.

I can also check out what's on other people's iTunes in the office,
though I rarely do.

On the rare occasions I go beyond the iTunes playlists, I like to check
out this:

Really good rockabilly and early RnR.

Mostly I listen to the "Wex Eclectic" station.

(Soma.fm is nice, but I found their playlists too limited a couple
years ago when I first listened.)

2008-02-26 Thread Jeff White
Couple of fun off topics today, and it's not even a Friday...I usually throw
the iPod on shuffle and see what happens, and that means anything from
Johnny Cash to Jurassic 5. When lyrics are distracting but I also need to
cancel out background noise in the office, I go for jazz - Miles Davis and
Karl Denson have been favorites lately.

Depends on my mood... if I need to get in a groove, some kind of
electronic or even metal works. And I'm approaching 40 too. :-)
