[slim] Re: Backing up ripped music

2005-04-12 Thread John Stimson

My collection is currently 600 hours, and takes up 200 GB. It's all
FLAC except for 4 songs in AAC.

At 10MB/min (an approximation) for raw 16bit/44.1kSps audio, the FLAC
is 55.4% as big as uncompressed WAV data would be. That's about what
the FLAC website claims is typical...

[slim] Stutter with SB2 and ss6.0 -- Broadcast?

2005-04-12 Thread John Stimson

I have a Linksys 10/100 5-port network switch to which I have connected
my server, my Squeezebox2, and two Win98 PCs.

PC #2 has an SMC EtherEZ ISA 10Mbps ethernet card. When it is turned
on, then after about 5-10 minutes, the audio coming out of the SB2
stutters, and continues to do so until the network cable to that PC is
unplugged. The cable can be plugged back in, and it's another 5-10
minutes before the stuttering comes back. I am not sure why there
would be any interaction between that PC and the operation of the SB2
(which only needs 0.7% of my 100Mbps network bandwidth, or 7% of the
bandwidth between the switch and PC #2). This happens when nothing
else is going on over the network, and when PC #2 is completely idle.

I have noticed that all the activity LEDs on the switch blink
synchronously when the SB2 is running, which indicates to me that the
stream from the server is a broadcast, not point to point. I had an
original SB for a while, running slimserver 5.6, and I'm pretty sure
that it ran point to point, not showing activity on any of the other
devices on the network. I don't know if that is related, although if
slimerver 6.0 to the SB2 ran point to point it's unlikely that PC #2
would interact with it.

I have doubts that it will be able to control the Slimserver via its

nice point kdf (as always). My initial success at using the new

[slim] Softsqueeze Performance Expectations

2005-04-12 Thread wyldbill

I've used Softsqueeze for a while as my desktop client, so I can listen
while I work, and have had pretty good luck. After upgrading to 6.0.1
however, SS seems to causing performance problems on my machine. If the
machine is idle, excepting playing w/ SS, SS keeps my CPU at 100%. It
also has a 57MB memory footprint. Running another large application
(like Eclipse) causes the machine to bog badly. SS's memory footprint
also increases gradually as it runs, indicating that there may be a
minor memory leak somewhere.(Weak References are your friend...)

System:
2.4 GHz P IV
XP SP1
2 GB memory (currently no swap)
SServer 6.0.1
SS 6.0b3

I've upped the SS buffer size, which tends to help the CPU load a bit,
but other apps are still dogging. I am using the Java MP3 library.

This seems to have started w/ the SS 6.0bX release. Any other similar
experiences? Things to look for?

thanks,
-bill

Stop the server, move the .db away in case someone from SD wants a
look at it, and let the server recreate it from scratch. Worked for me

Sounds like it. I wouldn't even mind the matching if a track's tag
were displayed with correct case and punctuation. As it is, it just
uses the first "match" and uses that as value for the others.

There are a number of cheap home routers that incorporate QoS (Quality
of Service) that can sit between your DSL/cable "modem" and ensure that
real-time traffic (like VoIP) gets the priority it needs.

The reality is, though, that many home connections have a woeful lack of
upstream bandwidth, and that you might be in an "either or" situation.
That is, either VoIP or streaming audio will be affected if you do both

It seems that internally the server matches things by their sort
order, which is case insensitive and ignores special punctuation and
the specified "ignore" articles. I suspect what you're seeing may a
result of that. One other bug I've seen as a side effect of this is
where an inconsistent tsop tag (sort order for artist) leads to
duplicate artist entries with the exact same displayed name.

I'm not sure exactly why it's done this way internally. Slimserver
does a lot of guessing to match individual songs to their respective
albums, which can be tricky when you get into various artist albums
and albums named things like "Greatest Hits", or in this case "Live".
Maybe this way of matching somehow made that easier, especially if
people have inconsistent tags? I'm just guessing here.

Perhaps slimserver needs a "competency" setting that means, "my tags
and my directory structure are consistent. Things in this dir belong
to the same album, and things elsewhere in my collection belong to
something else, and trust the displayed name of artist/album/track for
matching."

In the mean time, you should probably file a bug.

[slim] Re: Any chance of SlimDevices making a portable player?

2005-04-12 Thread jmpage2

I'm still waiting for the guy to chime in who built his "portable"
Squeezebox solution.

A Squeezebox running on dry cell batteries with a wireless ethernet
connection to a laptop running Slimserver. All stuffed into a backpack
so that he could get 2-3 hours of "optimal listening" enjoyment from his
SB (and hope that a sudden downpour didn't cause the whole thing to
meltdown and electrocute him.

You need to setup and use QoS to prioritize your VoIP packets above
everything else on both your WAN and LAN connections if you want your
VoIP to always have top priority on the network and the broadband
connection.

VoIP is extremely susceptible to contention which can cause latency and
packet loss. If you use a VoIP coder in the same PC as the Slim Server
then that process also needs to be given higher priority than the Slim
process.

I have my amplifier, dvd player, vcr & cable box hidden in a cabinet.
The Squeezebox is the only thing outside (apart from the TV).

So I think a small case works pretty well...

cool!)

fyi...since I recall someone mentioning not being able to get debugging working:

There is a pref being used in the plugin, "scrobbler-debug" which has no UI to
change it. You would need to manually set this to 1 in your prefs file and use
d_cli to get debugging output (according to the comments code). However,
looking through the rest of the code, simply changing the scrobbler-debug pref
should do it with or without d_cli or any other debug flags. There are a few
prefs without a UI, but I assume those will come along before release.

The Rio's were cursed with a somewhat unreliable HDD unit from Hitachi,
which has caused some failures. Rio are pretty good at replacing them
even out of warranty though. The software lockups are just that -
firmware crashes. My Karma has crashed (as I said) maybe 3 or 4 times
in well over a year of use (and in all cases a quick reset fixed it).
My girlfriends iPod mini has locked up at least 10 times since
Christmas. Apple say there's nothing wrong with it and we should
"expect all electronic devices to lock up some times". Hmmm.

Nothing's perfect it seems...

[slim] SlimScrobbler CVS works!

2005-04-12 Thread Dave Dewey

Thanks to Ian and Stewart!

The SlimScrobbler plugin for 6.0.1-1 is working perfectly in my setup
(Fedora Core 3).

The new code in CVS on SourceForge is the working version.

- Download from CVS
- Install it
- On the 'Server Settings/Plugins' page make sure that 'AudioScrobbler
  Submitter' is checked.
- There is a new Audioscrobbler prefs pane on that same page; enter your
Audioscrobbler userid/password, turn on AutoSubmit. Click 'Change.'

That's it! Slimserver now starts up without any Slimscrobbler errors, and
the plugin works great.

Thanks again guys, I'm ordering a new SB2 today now that this works...

I am seeing a case sensitive genre list in list genres of 6.0.1 using the browser and Slimp3 clients.  The list shows "AudioBooks" and "Audiobooks".

Is this a bug or expected behaviour?  If it does this for genres will it also be case senstive for artist names etc?

Yes it does.
When you install, there is a tick-box marked 'run automatically', this
is effectively whether to installl & run as a service or not.

Does slimserver run as a service by default on windows XP?

[slim] Re: New Buffalo Linkstation and Slimserver

2005-04-12 Thread dropbear

I have Revo Gear's Kuro Box HG (which is made and owned by Buffalo) that
is running Slimserver 6.01 with no problems what so ever. The HG runs a
more powerful CPU (266 mhz) and has twice the memory (128mb). You also
have to provide your own hard drive, and outside the US your own
transformer, but the effort is well worth it.

The Linkstation and the Kuro run a version of Linux, the only problem
is that some of the newer versions of the Linkstation had turned off
Telnet so it was difficult to log into it to install more software.
There are a number of very good write ups about how to put SS onto the
Linkstation, so don't be put off.

Toby,
Firstly there is no 'played count' in SlimServer (or if there is one in
the database it's not implemented that I know of?).

Secondly, you can get the played count in iTunes to be updated by
SlimServer by using my iTunes Update plugin:

existing.
There's still the option to edit the HTML template.

The Handheld skin is using the thumb.jpg, if available. I've therefore
started to have two artwork files per album: thumb.* (about 120x120)
and
cover.*.
There's a script around which will automatically download them from
amazon
(http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html). I've
never
tried it, though.
From what you have said your fix will only work if there are separate
image files. However the images I'm displaying come from the tag info
on the actual Apple Lossless music files. Is there a fix for this.
What happens, if you still put a small cover.jpg into the album's folder?
But editing the html template is fairly simple. And if you backup the file
before changing it you don't risk a lot ;-)

Those were flac files uning vorbis comments, but I found the culprit
anyway. Not sure why it does what it does, though.

Relatively early in the scanning progress slimserver finds an .mp3 in
my misc folder, with "ALBUM=LIVE", only later in the scanning process
it finds the Police album in question. As long as "Live" is included
popular album title which requires an artist match the .mp3 doesn't
show up in the same album as the Police .flacs but they still
"inherit" its title, including capitalization.

But why would slimserver assume the album titles to be the same in the
first place? One is "LIVE", the other is "Live!" At the very least
it's not case sensitive and even that would only explain it if the !
at the end of the second album's title either got stripped or if it
were determined by the directory name at this point, which is just
"Live" to avoid any special char problems.

I retagged the .mp3 to use "ALBUM=__LIVE" for testing and suddenly the
Police one came out fine, as "Live!" As sonn as I reverted it was all
"LIVE" again.

When's ALBUM read anyway, i couldn't find it in the --d_info output?
