[slim] Issues with SB3
Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum, and I hope my questions aren't already answered. I looked thorugh the three first pages and found some answers anyway... :-) Well, here's the deal. Yesterday I downloaded the new Slimserver 6.5.0. I installed it, had some difficulties in finding the "Browse by artwork" (found the answer to that one), and decided to go back to the 6.3.1 for now. Anyway, before this actions the clock was always visible on my SB3. Now when I shut of the computer, so does the SB3. IE no clock... I'm a bit confused. Does anyone know why this happens? I will install the 6.5.0 today again, but I would really like th clock to work even when the computer is off Is it a setting? Most formats should be easy to play without gaps, but that doesn't mean all software and hardware players will be gapless (including older iPods). Mp3s are a little harder to deal with, but not impossible. You could always upgrade to the latest iPods and then you should get gapless playback for all the audio formats it supports. -- smc2911 smc2911's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4388 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27729 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

To be certain, I reset all the fields, cleared and rescanned again, and I still can't browse to artists that appear on various artist compilations when I browse by artist. I just ripped a file in WAV using iTunes. And it seems that you can label it just like any other file. There are no apparent limitations. That said, when you look at the file itself, there's almost no information (only the filename, basically). In other words, iTunes doesn't seem to write down the information on the music file itself. Perhaps > iTunes hides that from you (I wouldn't know as I don't use iTunes) Please don't start throwing accusations of ignorance around. It's ill-mannered, boring, unnecessary and also happens to be wrong. This was a simple mis-phrasing on my part. I meant that there is continuing argument about the merits or otherwise of lossless compressed formats. Listen to any bunch of audiophiles, and they'll probably be at it at some time. There is no such argument about the sonic qualities of the uncompressed formats. Why does one need an "excuse" to use an uncompressed format? I happen to prefer uncompressed files because I find them more versatile and useful and I'm also not convinced that adding to the complexity of any process is necessarily a good thing. (Nobody mentioned the cost of processing as an argument, I believe.) That is a perfectly reasonable - and reasonably well-informed and rational - position to hold. It certainly doesn't strike me as terribly provocative. What you say about tagging merely repeats, with more aggression but without imparting any additional information, a point about which I'd already agreed I knew nothing because I use iTunes, and therefore am not aware that I need to know anything - which may, or may not, be an advantage of using iTunes, depending on your point of view. But I'm really not interested in an argument. No, I checked, too, and you're quite right, and I was quite wrong, about AAC and ALAC. Sorry! (That shows how much I use them!) I disagree about AIFF, though. In fact, I'd put it the other way round. I don't see the point in NOT using aiff (or .wav). They are, unarguably, the gold standard sonically, which one cannot say of any of the compressed formats, about the relative merits of which or differences between which there always seems to be some sort of barney going on somewhere. There's lots else in favour of not using compression - flexibility, rapidity of ripping, ability to upsample/edit digitised vinyl, simplicity of processing, not to mention all the things you can do with them on Squeezebox - that make make ripping to anything else seem to me like spoiling the ship for a ha'p'eth of tar. The only argument I can see in its favour is disc space, but this is now so incredibly cheap that it seems to me like false economy to stint on it and risk (perhaps) compromising the output of, for instance, a five figure (or more) audio setup. Concerning tagging - now, you definitely lose me. I've never myself found any shortcomings in or limitations to the labelling that I need of Aiff files. This may well be because - being a benighted iTunes user! - I don't know anything at all about it, and don't really know what is possible. That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. In 6.5 we use a different method for radio called direct streaming. The player actually makes the audio connection directly to the remote server (or via a proxy if you've set that option). So without an SS/SN connection it will continue to play as long as you still have a net connection. Upon reconnecting to SS the audio will stop. On SN, the audio is allowed to continue after reconnect, so that you can listen uninterrupted even if you are bounced around several SN instances. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27743 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Quoting dgpretzel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: How does the buffering actually work? SB3 Buffer is, from the wiki, http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?HardwareComparison: 25Mb (approx. 200 seconds at 128Kbps) compresessed , plus 28Mb (10 seconds at 44.1 samples/sec) uncompressed In order to play music with a fast response, an initial threshold triggers the start of playback. The bandwidth of a typical network is a lot more than the playback rate, so you can continue to fill the buffer during playback. In cases of compressed audio in formats native to to the hardware, the data can be sent whie still compressed and thus filling at an even greater rate than the playback. As such, on a solid network where the buffer is not being reduced periodically from lag, you end up with up to 200 seconds of compressed audio stored on the hardware. Even after SN or slimserver is gone, the hardware continues playing since that was the last instruction given before the server went away. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

How does the buffering actually work? I mean usually it takes only a few seconds for buffering to be completed. Then the music starts. Presumably, on average, the data rate in equals the data rate out. Thus, the amount of data buffered should be whatever was accumulated during the initial buffering process, which is several seconds' worth. How then can the buffer supply data for more than a minute after the incoming data stream terminates? I expected the SB to stop when I powered down the server. I fiddled around with the remote, and observed that the display was back at the initial screen. Pressing POWER OFF on the remote did nothing (I guess that would make sense since the server was off by that time). Then, I noticed that the SB screen was totally black, but the music continued playing. I let it play for a little while, then finally pulled the plug. I wonder why it continued to play in the absence of either a local SS or remote SN connection? Could it be that it was just playing from its local cache, even after the server disappeared? [slim] WMA Lossless users
I have been trying to diagnose a few WMA related problems and I am wondering if this may be machine/installation related or is this a general issue with SlimServer/SB3 playing WMA Lossless. Here are the issues: 1) end of songs gets cut off. this is usually difficult to detect except with some classical recordings where they breakup a piece into multiple tracks. I am not talking about gapless playback, I am talking about a small piece at the end actually got chopped off. 2) an ocassional burst of pink noise while playing 3) music just stops. SB3 spectrum analyzer has no activity. no more music. hit play again and the piece will played from the beginning... but it stops. This usually happens only after more then 30 mins of playing. Why I think these are WMA related? Because if I convert them to FLAC, then none of these issues exists anymore. Everything becomes ok. Further to my post on 17/09/06, I can report that I still can't access the SlimServer. Windows Networking access to the TS-101 is problematic. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. I'm still getting an inordinate amount of time of the HDD light being on. I wish I could just reformat the unit and start from scratch but would that destroy any possibility of the SlimServer working again? I tried to install a SlimServer update but noticed that the "Update" directory in "public" didn't exist anymore so created a new "Update" directory and put the SlimServer update there. Nothing much happened. So at the moment SlimServer is totally non-functional and I'm getting erratic behaviour from the TS-101 such that I cannot even use it as a basic NAS device. I'm pretty certain it doesn't support FWD and REV, though. As for AIFF, I really don't see the point in using it. [slim] Re: How long can a phono cable be before sound quality is seriously effected?
@TiredLegs (or anyone else who knows): I have a question re the cat5 to connect baluns. At present the two rooms I am thinking of connecting have RJ-45 wall jacks that lead to the same ethernet switch in the basement. Would I be okay if I just disconnected the two relevant cables from the switch, and then connected them directly using a simple coupler (ie, a female-female RJ-45 jack)? So the path would look something like this: SB (or amp line out) -> balun -> short Cat5 patch cord -> wall jack -> Cat5 in wall -> RJ-45 coupler -> Cat5 in wall -> wall jack -> patch cord -> balun -> amp line-in It's not that complicated, but I count 6 RJ-45 plugs and 4 jacks (including the coupler but not the baluns), and wonder if that will cause any problem with sound quality. It's all fairly new Cat5e cable and connectors, and the total run is well under 30m. Things I'd like to see: 1: A clean install process for upgraders. Quite a mess for those who are migrating from 6.3.x and lower to 6.5. 2: Stability, stability, stability. 3: Optimize the SQL currently in use. It seems there's lots of inefficient queries ... the web and SB interfaces and could be so much more responsive with some good SQL optimization. 4: Reduced resources footprint. It's beginning to look pretty fat for something called "Slim"Server. 5: Enhance the scanning process. There are lots of apps out there that monitor drive folders for changes without the intensive scanning process used by Slim (except for initial scan of course...). It'd be much nicer if SS would add music and playlists to my library on the fly as their added to the directory. 6: Improve the scan process. Does it really need to take as long as it does?? MusicMagic scans my whole library in 1/4 the time SlimServer does ... seems there's room for improvement there. Probably relates to item #3 on some level. 7: Begin more thoroughly embracing AJAX on the web interface ... it's really getting dated with the old click/reload-the-whole-page-for-changes paradigm. ...especially with how long page loads can take sometimes. Overall, I'd say that the server software has all the features 90% of users could want. It'd be good to focus on making those features as good as they can be before hanging on a bunch more fluff. -- jeffluckett jeffluckett's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

What you need is the late, lamented empeg, who built most of what you want seven years ago, were bought out by Rio and all but died under the weight of terrible marketing and lack of focus from the parent company (the core of the original UK company is now part of Sigma Designs). You can still sometimes pick up empeg car players on eBay and there's still an active development community. As well as the empeg car player they also built the Rio Receiver (aka Dell Audio Receiver) - arguably the first generation Squeezebox - and Rio Karma portable which is still the best all-round portable music player in many respects. -- florca florca's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7486 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27696 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If possible, I'd love for them to come up with a solution for Bug 259: Synchronization should use fine-grained network clock. I hate the drift between my 3 SBs during gapless music playback! -- thespaugh thespaugh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2137 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Please post your /etc/init.d/slimserver please (Ubuntu)
Yeah true. But your posting says it all: > that's probably the reason that the .deb was part of the > beta At the time I hadn't realised that :-) Agreed, your method will be easier. But now that I've hit the pitfalls with 6.5, 6.5.1 should only be a 5 minute job. [slim] Re: Why use iTunes
Its an intuitive, convenient and easy to use all-in-one package allowing you rip your music, tag it and organize it, create playlists and, most importantly, smart playlists. Smart playlists are great. Its not the absolutely perfect way to do all of these things, but it gets the job done. Its also great for people who don't know beans about computers or who don't want the hassle of finding the apps, then configuring them. Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't support FLAC. Which means that iTunes users can't enjoy : - Gapless playback on they're Squeezebox (the Squeezebox doesn't have a workaround yet for the limitations of MP3 and AAC) - Replaygain - Can't use RWD or FFW, unless using MP3's. I'm not using iTunes anymore. The feature I'll miss the most is definitively smartplaylists. Fortunately, Erland wrote SQLplaylist plugin. He did a great job, but he'll be the first to admit that its not as intuitive and easy to use as the Apple smart playlists. -- Nostromo Nostromo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6322 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27729 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
