[slim] Issues with SB3

2006-09-22 Thread Mattiasa

Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum, and I hope my questions aren't
already answered. I looked thorugh the three first pages and found some
answers anyway... :-)

Well, here's the deal. Yesterday I downloaded the new Slimserver 6.5.0.
I installed it, had some difficulties in finding the "Browse by artwork"
(found the answer to that one), and decided to go back to the 6.3.1 for
now. Anyway, before this actions the clock was always visible on my
SB3. Now when I shut of the computer, so does the SB3. IE no clock...
I'm a bit confused. Does anyone know why this happens? I will
install the 6.5.0 today again, but I would really like th clock to work
even when the computer is off Is it a setting?

Thx in advance

In think that the limitation is with your iPod rather than the format.
Most formats should be easy to play without gaps, but that doesn't mean
all software and hardware players will be gapless (including older
iPods). Mp3s are a little harder to deal with, but not impossible. You
could always upgrade to the latest iPods and then you should get
gapless playback for all the audio formats it supports.

[slim] Re: My various artists ARTISTS are missing

2006-09-22 Thread arturo

Nope, that's how I had it set already (and I think I've been current for
the last several official releases). To be certain, I reset all the
fields, cleared and rescanned again, and I still can't browse to
artists that appear on various artist compilations when I browse by
artist.

Interestingly, there's an artist called "various artists", but when I
click on it, the server goes to the top of the browse list for every
album in my library (instead of the VA collections only). If I select
any single album from that list and click on it, I go to a screen that
says "0 albums with 0 songs by 0 artists."

Any thoughts?

2006-09-22 Thread Chop

This seems like a dumb question as I've had the SB2 since it came out an
never had this problem but I'm at a loss.

I have my computer and the SB connected via a wireless router.
However, I can't get Slimserver to find the SB without turning off the
widows XP firewall.

I never had this issue before as it asked for the exception when I
first hooked up the SB ages ago. However, I recently had to reset my
firewall to defaults and now it won't even give me that option (and I
have it checked to allow exceptions and notify me when there is a
blocked connection).

Maybe I'm just forgetting something that I did ages ago...Anyways, can
anyone help?

Thanks

That's only true if you scan directly. If you scan through iTunes you

I checked out the build from the 8th out of SVN and am seeing the same

I am seeing a similar problem. When I run the debug option for plugins
this is what I see when I select SIRIUS from the Internet Radio menu:
Code:

2006-09-22 20:53:03.9450 SiriusRadio: Starting up getTitle monitoring.

I am running the official rpm of 6.5.0, previously I was running the
nighlty version SlimServer_6.5_v2006-09-08.noarch.rpm and know that the
current version of the plugin worked with that. So it either is that
Sirius changed and broke the plugin or that something introduced in the
run up to the offical 6.5.0 has broken the plugin. If sirus has not
changed and I get a chance, I will try to roll back through SVN to see
at which point the plugin breaks.

If you need any additional info or would like a fix tested let me
know.

MP3 and AAC don't support gapless playback, but there are workarounds.
Some MP3 players, for example, can do it. When I did some tests earlier
today with AAC and ALAC tracks, I didn't hear any gaps. Its a bit
confusing, since the Squeezebox isn't supposed to be able, as of yet,
to remove the gaps.

I somewhat new at all this, but I'm a bit sceptical about the so-called
"sonic superiority" of AIFF over FLAC or ALAC. I doubt anyone can tell
the difference in a blind test. Maybe people 6 figure audio setups. I
certainly can't tell them apart with my sad little 3 figure audio
setup. ;-) But lets leave it at that.

Like I said, I'm new at all this. I'm sure that somebody else could
explain all this to you a lot better. Mmmm... I just ripped a file in
WAV using iTunes. And it seems that you can label it just like any
other file. There are no apparent limitations. That said, when you look
at the file itself, there's almost no information (only the filename,
basically). In other words, iTunes doesn't seem to write down the
information on the music file itself. So if your computer crashes, and
you loose all your music, you'll have to relabel everything, even
though you backed up all your WAV's.

It seems one of the more recurrent complaints is grumbling about the

Agreed ... that's why I was putting in the 7.0 wish list. I've worked
with SQLite before, and am aware of the limitations, and the sometimes
screwy queries that you have to write for it.

Glad to hear that query optimization is on the TODO list now that a

Flamingo, I'm having the same issues. At first, I thought I was
misunderstanding what the "Title Format" setting should control,
however Ceejay kindly made me aware that it was, in fact, the proper
knob to twiddle.

What follows is a table of what I am experiencing. I selected each
title format in turn, then selected Home > Albums and an album from my
list. These are my observations (the format number is in
parentheses):

Code:

  (0) TITLE
Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux

  (1) DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE
  1. Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux

  (2) TRACKNUM. TITLE
  1. Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux

  (3) TRACKNUM. ARTIST - TITLE
  1. Madeleine Peyroux - Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland

  (4) TRACKNUM. TITLE (ARTIST)
  1. Walkin' After Midnight (Madeleine Peyroux) from Dreamland

  (5) TRACKNUM. TITLE - ARTIST - ALBUM
  1. Walkin' After Midnight - Madeleine Peyroux - Dreamland

  (6) FILE.EXT
01 Walkin' After Midnight.mp3 from Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux

  (7) TRACKNUM. TITLE from ALBUM by ARTIST
  1. Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux

  (8) TITLE (ARTIST)
Walkin' After Midnight (Madeleine Peyroux) from Dreamland

  (9) ARTIST - TITLE
Madeleine Peyroux - Walkin' After Midnight from Dreamland

At this point it seems clear that something isn't quite working
properly. I couldn't find a bug report on this issue -- should one be
submitted?

AN.

Please don't start throwing accusations of ignorance around. It's
ill-mannered, boring, unnecessary and also happens to be wrong. This
was a simple mis-phrasing on my part. I meant that there is continuing
argument about the merits or otherwise of lossless compressed formats.
Listen to any bunch of audiophiles, and they'll probably be at it at
some time. There is no such argument about the sonic qualities of the
uncompressed formats.

Why does one need an "excuse" to use an uncompressed format? I happen
to prefer uncompressed files because I find them more versatile and
useful and I'm also not convinced that adding to the complexity of any
process is necessarily a good thing. (Nobody mentioned the cost of
processing as an argument, I believe.) That is a perfectly reasonable -
and reasonably well-informed and rational - position to hold. It
certainly doesn't strike me as terribly provocative.

What you say about tagging merely repeats, with more aggression but
without imparting any additional information, a point about which I'd
already agreed I knew nothing because I use iTunes, and therefore am
not aware that I need to know anything - which may, or may not, be an
advantage of using iTunes, depending on your point of view. But I'm
really not interested in an argument. I was rather hoping for an
entertaining and possibly illuminating discussion.

They don't mention AIFF. Maybe its better than WAV for tagging, I don't
know.

Tags can also contain other types of information, like the genre (rock,
baroque, classical, romantic...), ratings and the very useful comments.
These can very useful to set up playlists.

Sorry, but that is just plain wrong. You are clearly ignorant of the
difference lossy and lossless compressed formats. With lossless
formats, such as FLAC, all information is retained, and when
uncompressed, an exact duplicate of the original bytestream is
achieved. Thus, there is no sonic difference between a .wav and a .flac
of the same song. They are both "the gold standard".

And, as Nostromo correctly ponted out, .aiff and .wav have inferior or
nonexistent tagging capabilities, unlike FLAC and many others. Perhaps
iTunes hides that from you (I wouldn't know as I don't use iTunes)

No, I checked, too, and you're quite right, and I was quite wrong,
about AAC and ALAC. Sorry! (That shows how much I use them!) I
disagree about AIFF, though. In fact, I'd put it the other way round. I
don't see the point in NOT using aiff (or .wav). They are, unarguably,
the gold standard sonically, which one cannot say of any of the
compressed formats, about the relative merits of which or differences
between which there always seems to be some sort of barney going on
somewhere. There's lots else in favour of not using compression -
flexibility, rapidity of ripping, ability to upsample/edit digitised
vinyl, simplicity of processing, not to mention all the things you can
do with them on Squeezebox - that make make ripping to anything else
seem to me like spoiling the ship for a ha'p'eth of tar. The only
argument I can see in its favour is disc space, but this is now so
incredibly cheap that it seems to me like false economy to stint on it
and risk (perhaps) compromising the output of, for instance, a five
figure (or more) audio setup.

Concerning tagging - now, you definitely lose me. I've never myself
found any shortcomings in or limitations to the labelling that I need
of Aiff files. This may well be because - being a benighted iTunes
user! - I don't know anything at all about it, and don't really know
what is possible. That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Lead me,
therefore, to tagging Nirvana, O Nostromo, for I comprehend it not.

Okay got it working. Had to use an old trick which is to create a local

Windows will pass the account and password to the NAS and as they match
it ignores the fact they are from different domains.

Anyway using UNC path then works fine even to a "restricted" share

2006-09-22 Thread andyg

In 6.5 we use a different method for radio called direct streaming. The
player actually makes the audio connection directly to the remote server
(or via a proxy if you've set that option). So without an SS/SN
connection it will continue to play as long as you still have a net
connection. Upon reconnecting to SS the audio will stop. On SN, the
audio is allowed to continue after reconnect, so that you can listen
uninterrupted even if you are bounced around several SN instances.

[slim] 6.5 - browser refresh no longer works in IE6

Hi, I've upgraded to 6.5 today (Ubuntu, via compiled tarball).

When I'm playing a playlist, the browser no long refreshes every 30
seconds (30 is my value in Server Settings > Interface). As such it
stays on an old song.

I've tried in IE6 and in Firefox. It works in Firefox but not IE6 (but
used to work in IE6 on 6.3).

FireFox messes up too many things for me, so I'd rather not be forced
into using FireFox just because of a Slim upgrade?

Re: [slim] Re: Curious-- SB3 wouldn't turn OFF

2006-09-22 Thread kdf

Quoting dgpretzel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

How does the buffering actually work?

SB3 Buffer is, from the wiki,
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?HardwareComparison:

25Mb (approx. 200 seconds at 128Kbps) compresessed
, plus 28Mb (10 seconds at 44.1 samples/sec) uncompressed

In order to play music with a fast response, an initial threshold
triggers the start of playback. The bandwidth of a typical network is
a lot more than the playback rate, so you can continue to fill the
buffer during playback. In cases of compressed audio in formats
native to to the hardware, the data can be sent whie still compressed
and thus filling at an even greater rate than the playback.

As such, on a solid network where the buffer is not being reduced
periodically from lag, you end up with up to 200 seconds of compressed
audio stored on the hardware. Even after SN or slimserver is gone,
the hardware continues playing since that was the last instruction
given before the server went away.

How does the buffering actually work? I mean usually it takes only a
few seconds for buffering to be completed. Then the music starts.
Presumably, on average, the data rate in equals the data rate out.
Thus, the amount of data buffered should be whatever was accumulated
during the initial buffering process, which is several seconds' worth.

How then can the buffer supply data for more than a minute after the
incoming data stream terminates?

Curious,

Beside that, I would never trash my dashboard with such cheap

[slim] Duplicate Albums

2006-09-22 Thread Johnathan Hershbaum
Hi WSLam
I did a uninstall and a new installation.

All the albums with 2 directories show up as duplicates in the browse
by albums

 For example

 Ultimate Collection by Kinks
 Ultimate Collection by Kinks

but the directory structure on the server is

  Kinks - Ultimate Collection (Kinks)

  with

  Disc 1
  Disc 2

The previous version did not seem to have this problem for me.

The new version is really much faster

  Thanks for the reply

Pretty sure there would be cross platform issues with this, but there
may be ways round that.

One of the SlimDevices guys (i think it was Dean) stated in the past
that right now they haven't done a huge amount of optimisation on the
SQL queries for scanning. As they were moving to MySQL in 6.5 i think
they just wanted it to work reliably before they spend time on
optimising and tweaking. I would expect to see a speed improvement in
future versions as the Devs get more used to what MySQL can really do
for them :)

If you're running Debian testing or unstable, there's the Debian

"apt-get install slimserver" did it for me.

I expect 6.5.0 will be hitting unstable soon.

yes. the 'now playing' section is background updated where possible.
It should also stay alive over server restarts (but not
hibernate/standby unfortunately). The current song item is also
tracked via ajax, so hopefully the playlist only needs to reload when
there is a change of player or playlist content.

I don'd plan to expand beyond this at the moment, mainly because I
find ajax to be painful. silent failure is a stupid concept. Taht
being said, I do have a dream of getting rid of the need for 4 frames
in the skin and if I can an option that IE won't completely screw up,
then I might go further. Sadly, too many people feel the need to keep
quoting me the IE market share for me to just dump it (despite NEVER
using it myself). There was a iframe solution I really liked that
just vaourised becuase IE seemed to have not one inkling of what was
going on with it.

one thing I'd love (patches gratefully appreciated) would be a
mouseover div instead of the browse pulldown. Ideally it would be
filled with the contents of home.html so that I no longer have to keep
hacking that logic to make a form work every time something changes.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox wav frequency limitations

2006-09-22 Thread blazerte

Yeah, that bug was for the V1 firmware which is probably no longer being
supported.

It's cool what they can do by uploading new software to the V2 and
above Squeezebox. I have a V2 elsewhere and will test this out once
Debian upgrades to 6.5

And as long as I know what's an acceptable wav and what's not, I can
fix the problems with the V1 by adjusting the file format when
necessary.

And one of these days I'll probably ditch the V1 squeeze.

Thanks,
Bruce

[slim] Slimserver not playing certain Apple Lossless files

2006-09-22 Thread MikeSB

I have recently upgraded to 6.5 on OS X 10.4.7 I am unable to play
certain Apple Lossless files in my library. I select them and the
track appears on the squeezebox display saying that it is playing.
However, the elapsed time counter does not advance and there is no
sound. Tracks encoded in compressed AAC or MP3 play fine. At first I
thought it affected all my Apple Lossless files but strangely there are
certain files which play fine.

I have tried restarting slimserver, rescanning the library,
reinstalling slimserver to no avail.

The only things that have changed on my system apart from upgrading to
6.5 is an upgrade to itunes 7. I use itunes to manage my library. The
lossless files that won't play on the squeezebox play fine through
itunes.

Any help would be appreciated.

[slim] Curious-- SB3 wouldn't turn OFF

2006-09-22 Thread dgpretzel

Last night I downloaded and installed 6.5 on a new Windows XP Pro
machine. I got rid of the former SS machine several weeks ago
(recently, I have been mostly using my SB3 with SN). Anyway, it
installed fine.

I configured the SB3 for wireless, and it worked fine, too (firmware
upgraded automatically).

I then started playing an internet radio station (WDAV in Charlotte,
NC) and listened for a while.

Later, I shutdown the server and powered down the computer.

The SB continued to play. I expected the SB to stop when I powered
down the server.

I fiddled around with the remote, and observed that the display was
back at the initial screen. Pressing POWER OFF on the remote did
nothing (I guess that would make sense since the server was off by
that time). Then, I noticed that the SB screen was totally black, but
the music continued playing. I let it play for a little while, then
finally pulled the plug.

I wonder why it continued to play in the absence of either a local SS
or remote SN connection?

Could it be that it was just playing from its local cache, even after
the server disappeared?

I'm seeing these same errors. I just deleted server/CPAN/DBI.pm and

As long as you have the CPAN packages installed for yourself, it

[slim] WMA Lossless users

2006-09-22 Thread WSLam

I have been trying to diagnose a few WMA related problems and I am
wondering if this may be machine/installation related or is this a
general issue with SlimServer/SB3 playing WMA Lossless.

Here are the issues:

1) end of songs gets cut off. this is usually difficult to detect
except with some classical recordings where they breakup a piece into
multiple tracks. I am not talking about gapless playback, I am talking
about a small piece at the end actually got chopped off.

2) an ocassional burst of pink noise while playing

3) music just stops. SB3 spectrum analyzer has no activity. no more
music. hit play again and the piece will played from the beginning...
but it stops. This usually happens only after more then 30 mins of
playing.

Why I think these are WMA related? Because if I convert them to FLAC,
then none of these issues exists anymore. Everything becomes ok.

Please help fellow WMA Lossless users...

I mean to upgrade without leaving stuff behind that causes it to crash.
There are currently no shortage of active threads talking about how the
6.3 plugins, and the default2 skin that get left in place during upgrade
are causing issues. By and large, when I upgrade software it works, and
is not hampered by the fact that an earlier version had been installed.

I run it on a dedicated box with an 800mhz processor, win2k3 and 512MB
RAM. When the scanner is running, navigating the web interface is
painful, and my SB's interface gets laggy. I'm not at home right now,
so I can't quote any numbers, but I do remember being rather astonished
at the size of the memory footprint of both the scanner and slim.exe
itself.

They also want this to run on NAS devices, which are pretty limited on
proc. and memory resources...

No, it's not that hard. I'm a programmer as well (8 years in the biz),
and have been doing AJAX for about a year or so. Compatibility is not
an issue, there's just MS vs. EVERYONE ELSE on exactly how you call up
the XMLHttpRequest object, but it's pretty easy to pick the right way
via object detection ... or just use one of the many and useful AJAX
libraries out there. I think I remember seeing that Fishbone uses
Prototype.js ... but I could be mistaken.

As for debugging tools, pretty much using the FireBug extension in
Firefox is all I've ever needed, and then standard debugging techniques
from there. It's not as hard as you think, but you have to stop
thinking the way you used to in regards to how web-apps are supposed to
work.

Now, you're going to say, "if your such a fantabluous programmer why
don't you contribute to the project."

Fair jab. I have two reasons:
1. I typically do a 50 hour week at the office. I also have a wife and
child ... and I do a little freelance work too. By the time I finish
programming for money, I just want to Listen to my SB, talk to my wife
and play with my baby. As much as I'd like to contribute, I frankly
don't have the time.

2. Perl. I hate it. Makes my head hurt.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-09-22 Thread matharu

Further to my post on 17/09/06, I can report that I still can't access
the SlimServer.

Windows Networking access to the TS-101 is problematic. Sometimes it
works, sometimes it doesn't work.

I'm still getting an inordinate amount of time of the HDD light being
on.

I wish I could just reformat the unit and start from scratch but would
that destroy any possibility of the SlimServer working again?

I tried to install a SlimServer update but noticed that the "Update"
directory in "public" didn't exist anymore so created a new "Update"
directory and put the SlimServer update there. Nothing much happened.

So at the moment SlimServer is totally non-functional and I'm getting
erratic behaviour from the TS-101 such that I cannot even use it as a
basic NAS device.

HELP!

ALAC supports gapless playback? Are you sure? I'm pretty certain it
doesn't support FWD and REV, though.

As for AIFF, I really don't see the point in using it. If its anything
like WAV, there's no difference, soundwise, with ALAC or FLAC, AIFF
tracks take a lot more of space and its a poor choice for tagging
purposes.

On ReplayGain

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RGFoobar

But its not recommended for music with high dynamic range, like
classical.

[slim] Re: How long can a phono cable be before sound quality is seriously effected?

2006-09-22 Thread aubuti

@TiredLegs (or anyone else who knows): I have a question re the cat5 to
connect baluns. At present the two rooms I am thinking of connecting
have RJ-45 wall jacks that lead to the same ethernet switch in the
basement. Would I be okay if I just disconnected the two relevant
cables from the switch, and then connected them directly using a simple
coupler (ie, a female-female RJ-45 jack)? So the path would look
something like this:

SB (or amp line out) -> balun -> short Cat5 patch cord -> wall jack ->
Cat5 in wall -> RJ-45 coupler -> Cat5 in wall -> wall jack -> patch
cord -> balun -> amp line-in

It's not that complicated, but I count 6 RJ-45 plugs and 4 jacks
(including the coupler but not the baluns), and wonder if that will
cause any problem with sound quality. It's all fairly new Cat5e cable
and connectors, and the total run is well under 30m. Thanks!

What, exactly, do you mean?
Transparent upgrades are a serious challenge for all software, not just
SlimServer. The more you expect it to remember, the harder it gets. At
some point, it becomes impractical.

Seems to me that a reasonable list of things for the SlimServer to
remember across upgrades (IMHO) are

1) remember your library directory
2) remember your player names
3) remember choses skin

I personally don't care about plugins, some others may care more. At
some point, it may be too hard.

4: Reduced resources footprint. It's beginning to look pretty fat for
something called "Slim"Server.

Its the server for a SlimDevice, the SqueezeBox.
I don't see any reason to worry about it, an old obsolte PC runs it
perfectly. Mine has been up

 13:30:13 up 460 days, 41 min, 2 users, load average: 0.07, 0.13, 0.09

7: Begin more thoroughly embracing AJAX on the web interface ...

I probably have to add AJAX on the interface to what I do for a living,
and I am terrified. Doing it properly for lots of OS and browser
combinations looks extremely hard. Just testing all the combinations is
going to take many weeks if not many months.

AJAX is cool, but the tools to support it professionally are seriously
lacking. IMHO, YMMV, etc.

All true except for the "can't enjoy" bit. What about ALAC and AIFF?
They work a treat gaplessly. I've just been listening to a gapless AIFF
Solti Tannhauser on SS6.5 via SB2. Bliss over wireless. And WAV, for
that matter. I don't myself know whether that works, because, being an
Apple pip, I don't use it much, but doesn't it? And FWD and REV work
with AIFF (certainly - just been playing with it) and ALAC, (I think)
too. As for this "replaygain" of which you speak, I confess I know
little of it. If, however, it's the same as smart pre-set volume
adjustment for individual tracks or albums then it definitely works for
AIFF and ALAC because, having finally got 6.5 working - very nice
congratulations to the team and all - after some wireless tribulations,
it took me a while to work out why it was being so nannyish about
letting me play it loud. Some pesky default setting, it seems, but it
shows it works.

Come back, O, Nostromo, Come back! Harken to the siren song of iTunes!

(Fixes him with hypnotic gaze. Fails dismally. Loads super boy
scout-type cardboard catapult instead, but hits passing policeman. Oh,
well. One can but try.)

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-22 Thread jeffluckett

Things I'd like to see:

1: A clean install process for upgraders. Quite a mess for those who
are migrating from 6.3.x and lower to 6.5.

2: Stability, stability, stability.

3: Optimize the SQL currently in use. It seems there's lots of
inefficient queries ... the web and SB interfaces and could be so much
more responsive with some good SQL optimization.

4: Reduced resources footprint. It's beginning to look pretty fat for
something called "Slim"Server.

5: Enhance the scanning process. There are lots of apps out there that
monitor drive folders for changes without the intensive scanning process
used by Slim (except for initial scan of course...). It'd be much nicer
if SS would add music and playlists to my library on the fly as their
added to the directory.

6: Improve the scan process. Does it really need to take as long as it
does?? MusicMagic scans my whole library in 1/4 the time SlimServer
does ... seems there's room for improvement there. Probably relates
to item #3 on some level.

7: Begin more thoroughly embracing AJAX on the web interface ... it's
really getting dated with the old
click/reload-the-whole-page-for-changes paradigm. ...especially with
how long page loads can take sometimes.

Overall, I'd say that the server software has all the features 90% of
users could want. It'd be good to focus on making those features as
good as they can be before hanging on a bunch more fluff.

Well, it works ok for me! I created a new title string that included
Artist, selected it for both web display and a player, and it came up
fine on both. The standard ones also work ok for me.

So what's different about yours?

Artist names are coming up correctly elsewhere?

One thing you might try - disabling all your plugins and restarting
slimserver, just in case something is misbehaving.

What you need is the late, lamented empeg, who built most of what you
want seven years ago, were bought out by Rio and all but died under the
weight of terrible marketing and lack of focus from the parent company
(the core of the original UK company is now part of Sigma Designs). You
can still sometimes pick up empeg car players on eBay and there's still
an active development community.

As well as the empeg car player they also built the Rio Receiver (aka
Dell Audio Receiver) - arguably the first generation Squeezebox - and
Rio Karma portable which is still the best all-round portable music
player in many respects.
